10TH SEPTEMBER 2024
It had been just a little over one week since the Ilvermorny transfers had settled in comfortably in Hogwarts and newly Sixth Year Sari Fawley had set herself many goals for the new school year, including proving to others that she didn’t just care for herself but more so for others too. And so, that’s how she found herself on the Main Floor of the school, her surroundings scattered with students of all ages and different robe colours, considering the first few days were dedicated to each and every one of them discovering which Hogwarts house they belonged to. The blonde knew that things in Hogwarts were going to change now with an increase in capacity but it didn’t essentially bother her. It just meant she had more opportunities to make friends.
On the Main Floor itself, many Hogwarts original students stood with badges and wraps over themselves that picked them out from the transfers and Sari knew she would require one of those too. She had decided to help to not only prove she didn’t just…love herself, but she wanted to help a clueless student around the grounds of her school too. After collecting what she needed, Sari made sure that she was approachable, dusting off whatever had appeared on her robes and walking amongst the other students, a smile on her lips. The Fawley watched as the transfers who knew one another reunited on the floors, while others who liked their peace and quiet stood in silence, or preoccupied.
Though, lost in searching her surroundings, Sari didn’t even notice that she had bumped into someone, a male-like figure who stood a few inches taller than Sari herself. But her hand still extended, grabbing onto the other’s arm to prevent him from falling over. ”I’m so sorry!” She apologised, scanning him lightly. ”Are you okay?”

Jace wasn't entirely sure how he felt like this, lining up to let other students volunteer to be his friend and help him around. What he really wanted was to figure out the castle on his own, but with classes starting soon he knew he didn't have a choice. He needed someone to show him around the school or help him out somehow. As he stood their, waiting to be assigned a "buddy", Jace couldn't help but look at the available people. Hopefully he got assigned a cute girl. Maybe that would make the situation better to deal with. At least, he was sure he'd enjoy it more if he was with a girl.
He jumped when someone bumped into him, almost tipping him over, but the person grabbed his arm to help him with his balance. He heard her voice before he looked at her and couldn't help but smile when he heard a girl speaking in a british accent. "No, I'm fine. Don't worry about it," he answered, shaking his head and shrugging to show he was fine. "I'm Jace Hunter," he introduced himself, extending a hand toward her. That was the polite thing to do, wasn't it? He wasn't too good at being polite, but he'd at least give it a chance.

The hand that extended was soon met with Sari’s own hand shaking it lightly once the male told the Fawley his name. ”Well Jace, I’m Sari. Sari Fawley.” The blonde introduced, a smile touching the corners of her lips. The curls that pressed lightly to her cheeks were pushed back with her free hand as she gently shook Jace’s hand before dropping her own to her side. From the boy’s tone and his own American accent, the Fawley gathered he was an Ilvermorny transfer; just like the many other students that crowded the room. Sari adjusted the badge resting on the collar of her robes as well as placing the wrap that was held in her hand around her head instead.
”I guess you could tell I’m not a transfer.” She stated, laughing softly. ”Are you still seeking a ‘buddy’? What year are you due to be placed in?” Sari was unsure if she would pick a buddy rather quickly, as she somewhat wanted to broaden her horizon. That and she kind of wanted to pick a cute and older friend rather than babysit someone.

Jace nodded when the girl introduced herself as Sari. Oooh, that was an interesting name, not that he was going to say so. He wasn’t entirely sure if she would take that as a compliment or not. He returned the handshake and smiled at her, trying to be polite for once in his life. “Nice to meet you.” He paused, “That’s what I’m supposed to say next isn’t it?” he asked, laughing as he shook his head at himself. “Sorry, I’m not really good at introductions.” Most of the time Jace just ran into people and they became friends or not. It wasn’t as formal as this felt like it should be. He watched as she adjusted her robe and put something around her head, not really knowing if she expected him to stay here or if she just wanted him to go.
He smiled at her next comment, nodding easily. “Yeah, the accent kind of gives that away,” he agreed, “but I’m sure mine does the same.” His accent labeled him as a stranger, whereas hers did the opposite. He shrugged at her next question. “Yeah. I mean, I’m looking to make a new friend,” he told her honestly. Jace wasn’t worried about being in a new school or anything he just wanted to know more people. Jace was a people person, so any excuse to meet someone new was a good one to him. “I’m going to be a fifth year though,” he told her. “What about you?” She seemed older, he thought, but maybe that was just the proper British posture coming through or something. He had no idea.

Sari found herself smiling in Jace’s direction the awkwardness in him striking out. It was rather cute to see the other trying his best to be polite, considering Sari was definitely older than him…Right? He may have been way taller than her, but most of the Fawley’s siblings were short anyway. ”That’s okay.” She reassured, placing her hand on his arm. ”Honestly, neither am I.” As Jace revealed her accent gave everything away, the blonde couldn’t help but let a quiet laugh pass her lips. ”I should have pretended to fool you a bit. Wasted opportunity.” She mentioned, shrugging in defeat.
With a nod, Sari began to draw up some possible questions for him, to see if her interest in the Hunter would be enough to put a buddy request for him. ”Well, that’s what we’re all here for. Welcome to Hogwarts first of all.” But soon, the blonde’s eyes widened at his comment. Fifth year?! She thought to herself, her blue eyes scanning him from head to toe just to make sure. He looked…a lot older. ”You’re so young.” She pouted even though the two of them were just one year apart in terms of housing. ”As of ten days ago, I’m an official Sixth Year Hufflepuff. I could go over the houses we have if no one has explained it yet?”

The girl was smiling at Jace’s awkward attempt to be polite … which was probably a good thing, right? At least she wasn’t looking at him like he was disgusting or like he’d offended her. He couldn’t be doing too bad, could he? She said he was fine, telling him that she wasn’t too polite either. Jace’s eyebrows lifted somewhat disbelievingly. “You mean, you grew up in England, the capital of manners and politeness and you aren’t really good at it?” he teased, unable to really help himself. What? If he ended up spending any time at all with this girl, she was bound to learn that he wasn’t good at all when it came to being serious. Jace much preferred to tease people and have fun. He laughed when she said she should have tried to fool him. “Oh, does that mean you do a good American accent? I’d love to hear it,” he encouraged, not sure if she would but curious all the same. He couldn’t seem to help it.
Then she seemed to get a little more serious, saying she was here to help with the making of friends and then welcoming him to Hogwarts. Jace smiled and nodded his head, forcing himself to not shoot out another teasing remark. She was doing her “job” right now. “Thanks,” he answered. She looked a little surprised when he gave his age, telling him he was young. Jace laughed, “Yeah, I’m pretty tall for my age,” he admitted, unrepentant. He actually liked that he could fool some people about how old he was. “Sixth year. Man, you’re basically ancient,” he teased, trying to see if he could get her to laugh or smile again. Then he nodded his head again, “Yeah, that’d be nice. I think someone told me over the summer, but I don’t really remember anymore,” Jace admitted, before adding, “if you don’t mind, that is.” He didn’t want to bore her, since he was sure she’d be explaining houses a bit until the sorting ceremony took place.

”Exactly that.” She said in a swift response, a beaming smile resting upon pink lips. While it was common enough for Sari to put on smiles and maintain a pretty face for the public, manners and actions were usually brushed to the side. Growing up in a large and troubled family also made you forget the simple, basic things – especially when most of your siblings/half-siblings are cruel- Ah, bad language. ”Possibly.” She responded in a cheerful tone. ”Though it’s a little worn out, maybe give me a few months with you guys and I’ll pick up your accent and you with mine.”
Extremely tall The blonde wanted to correct but instead nodded and laughed as a response. But when he remarked with the ancient comment, the seriousness in her job had disappeared, and soon the Fawley found herself nudging Jace friendly and comfortably – like they had been friends for years. ”I’m taking that into full offence.” she pouted, poking at her cheeks to show off her youth. After some poking and prodding Sari couldn’t help but giggle.
”Okay so. It gets a bit confusing but usually based on the house you once were in…Ilvermorny, they try to find an equivalent. But even sometimes the sorting hat changes its mind and places you in a different house!” Sari then directed his attention to the colour of her own robes. ”Red, Blue, Yellow and Green are the only colours to remember.” Sari paused, making sure that the Hunter was up to speed so far. ”Red for Gryffindor, home to the brave, daring, and chivalrous – Blue for Ravenclaw filled with those who are intelligent, knowledgeable, and witty. Hufflepuff aka my home, is home to those who are hard-working, patient, and loyal while Slytherin houses those who are ambitious, cunning and resourceful." Slytherin had always been known as a house that seemed to produce insane graduates, but the blonde remained quiet in regards to that topic.
”Hopefully that made…Some sort of sense. If not, the ceremony clarifies it all.”

Jace couldn't help but grin when the girl agreed that she'd grown up here, but was definitely not polite. That was awesome! It actually made him feel a little better about the new school. Jace wasn't really one to get nervous about things like this, but it was a new place and he really had no idea what things would be like here. At his teasing, she answered that after a few months everyone's accents would probably be melded together. Jace laughed, "You're probably right about that ... unless you're talking about the people who aren't happy about it. I'm sure there are some of us American's that will be careful to not pick up some of your phrases and stuff. I'm excited to practice my accents though," he reassured her. Honestly, he wanted to go home and show off his newfound British accent to all the people in Alaska. He was already planning on it.
She was funny. That was definitely something Jace could appreciate as the conversation continued. Sari pretended to be offended by him calling her ancient and Jace chuckled, "Naaw, that's a compliment," he chortled, interested to see how she'd respond to that, but she was already laughing. Definitely a good sign.
He listened intently as she started to explain about the housing system. There were four houses, they all focused on specific qualities and such. Okay, so that was pretty similar to the housing system at Ilvermorny ... not entirely the same, but close enough for him to be able to see the similarities. He nodded as she explained, wanting her to know that he was paying attention. "So you're biased toward the Hufflepuff house? Is that one yellow or green?" He asked, realizing she forgot to tell him the color for the last two houses. Honestly, the adventurous house sounded like the most fun to Jace, but he'd listen to her explanation. Maybe she'd change his mind. Doubtful, but possible. He nodded when she finished, "Yeah, that made sense. I probably won't remember it all," he chuckled, "but you did a very good job explaining." He thought a moment before asking, "So do people from different houses mingle, or are you only allowed to see people from your own house?" That would be sad, but Jace wanted to know what he should expect while here.

A giggle left the blonde’s lips at Jace’s response. Like the child he was, he had childish ideas planned for when/if he returned to Ilvermorny, but it was nice that Sari along with every other British student would be around to help. ”Well, I’m here for all of your slang needs. From the good words to the downright nasty.” She grinned, enjoying the smile that rested on the boy’s face – implying that he was enjoying her time. Somehow. When Jace brought up the topic around his clear insult she felt herself roll her eyes in a response, her arms crossing in front of her while her pout remained evident, proving that Sari was no more of a child. ”I don’t even have any grey hairs!” She defended, pointing at her blonde roots.
Her eyes widened gently as she inwardly face palmed herself for not mentioning the colours of the last two houses. ”My house is yellow.” She explained, revealing the side of her robes to him which contained the colour. ”Green is Slytherin. Quite common alongside Gryffindors – the Reds” The Fawley knew it was probably a lot of things for the brunette to take in, especially because he had no idea of his own house. ”It’ll take some time to getting used to”
The question about other houses mingling brought a small smile to Sari’s lips. ”Everyone and anyone mingles. Class, breaks, lunch, dinner.” The smile that rested on her lips was one that reminded her of the many friends she had from all over Hogwarts, Gryffindor, Hufflepuff – everywhere. ”Although during formal official meetings in the Great Hall, everyone sits on their House table. Alongside their peers, n-not literally on top of the table” She stammered, pushing back some of her blonde locks.

Jace grinned when Sari said that she was there to help him with any slang words that he needed. He thought for a moment, tapping his chin before asking, "Are there any I should know upfront?" he asked, curious to see what words she'd come up with right away, if any. Either way, he was glad that he had someone offering to help him a bit if he needed it. Not that Jace really thought he would need help learning the slang, but if she didn't mind teaching him words, that probably meant she wouldn't mind hanging out with him, which could lead to some fun encounters, and Jace was always interested in the fun. He laughed when she said she didn't have any gray hairs. "Neither does my grandma, but that doesn't mean she's not old," Jace teased, unable to help himself. He chuckled before shaking his head, "Naw, I'm just kidding." He was pretty sure Sari could tell, but he didn't want to take the chance and offend the girl.
Saris started to explain the last two colors that she left out and Jace nodded, repeating to himself the colors. Apparently green and red were the most common? Huh, that was interesting. He wasn't sure if there was one house (or even two) and Ilvermorny that necessarily had more or less than the others. That just led to the question about if there were houses here that were better than others. Personally, he thought the brave house sounded like fun, but he was sure that he'd end up somewhere where he fit. "I think I've got it. At least, the colors that go with the houses." Jace shrugged. It would take longer to remember all the traits that supposedly went along with the houses, but he was certain he'd be able to figure it out.
When she said that everyone mingled, Jace's smile returned. Good! He liked the idea of getting to know lots of different people at the school. "I'm glad to hear that. For a second there I was nervous that if I didn't get into your house I'd never see you again," he teased lightly. He wasn't nervous about that. At least, not in the way she might interpret, but Jace was a tease. He would've been sad not to see her again, if for no other reason than that she was the first person he really talked to once inside the school and she seemed pretty nice. He laughed when she stammered. "That's a shame. Sitting on the tables at formal meetings definitely sounds like fun." It was too easy to tease her about that, since she was already a little embarrassed.

Slang in England, or the United Kingdom as a whole was a difficult thing to explain on the contrary to the American Lingo. As a child, the Fawley grew up in a wealthy Pureblood household and never had the advantage - or disadvantage in her father's eyes - to attend a regular public school before her time in Hogwarts alongside Muggle students and pick up said slang. Instead everything she learned was from the knowledge of her parents and older siblings considering she was the seventh Fawley child out of nine overall and eventually from listening to Half-Bloods and Muggles that had attended a regular school. Puckering her lips as she thought, the blonde pushed some of her locks behind her ears before she spoke. "Maybe words like 'Bloody' or 'Blimey!'" She started in a rather excited tone. "Or even...'Knackered', 'Nicked', 'Chav'...The list is endless" Now that Sari gave it some thought, it was rather difficult for her to even come up with the slang words off the top of her head. But as Jace joked about her age once more, she couldn't help but send him a soft laugh along with another nudge.
With another giggle, the blonde couldn't help but notice how the information must have somehow left his mind in a ruckus. It was difficult for one to understand of course - considering Hogwarts had so many attributes for each house for every student to remember. "Don't worry too much on the traits. Just remember the colours!" She suggested. The blonde knew it would be a lot easier for the Fifth year to process. "You'll get the hang of what house represents as time goes on." She stated, reassuring him.
The blonde shook her head, patting his hand gently. "I wouldn't let that happen!" From their brief conversation she was enjoying Jace's company and definitely had no intention to stay out of contact with him. Even though the two were in different years, she knew if today went well she would more than likely try to seek out Jace’s company often. It was always nice to have more friends. ”I agree.” She giggled, before looking around. ”You’ve probably had a formal tour…But do you want an informal tour?” She questioned, wiggling her brows in his direction.

Jace listened with interest as Sari started explaining some of the words. He laughed, realizing that he’d heard quite a few of those in movies before. Just more the old kind of movies. “Oh, those are some good ones. I’ll have to remember them. Then I can surprise people by using them when they least expect it,” he said with a chuckle. Jace loved doing the unexpected and taking people by surprise. Also, he just thought it would be fun to use some of the British slang words, especially when he was hanging out with other Americans. He couldn’t help but wonder if there were others who wanted to learn more about the British culture while they were here, or if his fellow Americans just wanted to go home. He knew that some of them were nervous about going to a new school and being in a new place. Brooke definitely was struggling with that, no matter what Jace tried to do to reassure her.
It was surprisingly easy for Jace to get along with this blonde girl, which he was glad for. He liked having people he could joke around with and she definitely seemed like someone who was up for that sort of thing, which he definitely appreciated. She told him to not worry about the traits, just to focus on the colors and that he’d recognize the house traits as time went on. “That sounds like pretty solid advice,” Jace answered with a nod. “You’re in the red house, right?” he teased, smirking just because he could. “So I should try to get into that one so I can be with you. Wait … how do you decide who goes into which house? Is there a test or something?” Surprisingly, Jace hadn’t thought about that until this moment, and now he was a little bit nervous about it.
Sari patted his hand, saying that she wouldn’t let that happen and Jace smiled. He liked that he’d only been here for a short while, but he was already starting to make friends. “Good. I’d hate to have to search you out and somehow embarrass you in front of your friends.” Not that Jace would ever do that on purpose, but he didn’t have a lot of tact, so if he was searching for her and found her with a bunch of people, he probably would just jump in, even if he wasn’t wanted. She asked if he wanted an informal tour and Jace’s eyes glittered as he nodded, “Yes. I want to learn everything about this castle that I can,” he admitted. Then he grinned, “Are you offering to give me one?” he hoped the answer was yes. Jace had a feeling that he and Sari could have a bit of fun on a tour together.

It was nice to know that not all Americans were the same, but instead rather open to learning or adapting to different areas. From the small handful of Americans Sari Fawley had met – the blonde usually had a bad experience with them, mainly because of the views of blood status and how the world. With a giggle, her hand crossing her face to cover her mouth, the Fawley found herself grinning. ”The best times for it are always the unexpected ones.” When Sari heard that the Ilvermorny students were transferring in following the vandalism ‘attack’ – the blonde feared the difference in their accents would stir some kind of trouble. It sounded silly now that the Fawley thought of it, bringing a smile to her face.
The colours of Hogwarts were the only thing that allowed Sari to understand the differences between each of the students, but thankfully that blonde was a fast learner – by the second term of her first year, she memorised every aspect of the houses. ”I’m in the yellow house.” She corrected, flashing the side of her robes with the yellow stripes. She also gestured towards the other yellow aspects of her uniform – such as her collar and tie. ”You..Don’t decide. Nor is it a test…It’s a hat. A hat makes the choices.” It sounded strange, but explaining the Sorting Hat to a new student would have left the two standing for hours so Sari added: ”Everything is mainly explained in the Grand Feast for you all, where we watch the houses you’re sorted into.”
While Sari wanted to potentially be a closer friend for the younger boy, she couldn’t help but smile at his comments. He reminded her of her own younger brother – who didn’t mean to speak his mind when needed to or tease his elder siblings. In the Fawley family, her brother was considered important over most of the other members considering he was the first male her father actually wanted. ”If you embarrass me I’ll kill you.” Sari teasingly threatened. But when he questioned on her request for an informal tour, Sari felt her lips stretch into a smirk, sly but confidential between the two of them. ”Oh of course. Give you the best places to hang out when you’re bored of classes, places to avoid…Everything.” Although the blonde was unsure if the two of them were able to leave main floor, considering the students were still shuffling to different Buddies.

Jace loved how he seemed to have a friend that was easy to talk to. She was laughing, agreeing that it was best to take people by surprise and Jace found himself chuckling as he nodded. "I'll do my best to take everyone by surprise then," he agreed with another chortle. She was pretty good-natured and he was enjoying this conversation with the Hogwarts girl.
He made a face when she said she was in the "yellow house". "Sorry, I don't remember what you said about that house ... wanna tell me about your attributes again?" he teased, quirking an eyebrow at her as he did so. he couldn't help it! He nodded as she showed him the yellow part of her robes and her collar and tie and then rolled his eyes. "Okay, sorry sorry! I get it, you're yellow through and through." He wasn't serious, but Jace could never pass by a chance to tease. It was one of his many flaws. His eyebrows furrowed when she said he didn't get to choose and that it wasn't a test either. "A hat? A hat chooses where I get to spend my time at Hogwarts?" It seemed really far-fetched and silly to him, but Jace wasn't going to argue with it ... yet. He'd argue if the hat put him in a "house" where he wouldn't belong. "I guess I'll see that soon enough." What a sight that would be. A hat choosing where people would go. Huh.
Sari said that if he embarrassed her she'd kill him and Jace pretended to be scared for a moment, flinching away from her before laughing, "I'll keep that in mind," he retorted, waiting to see whether she was game to give him a tour or not. He figured she'd say yes, but he didn't want to assume too much. Maybe she'd be too busy for something like that. He nodded when she agreed and started to describe all the places, "Sounds perfect! Excited to see all the good places," he answered with a nod. "Are we allowed to sneak out now, or when am I supposed to meet this hat?" Jace really didn't know how all this was supposed to work out, but he didn't want to really get into trouble his first night here, which meant he probably shouldn't start trying to sneak off. Darn.

With another laugh, Sari could feel herself mentally face-palming herself. To her, Hufflepuff was one of the easier houses to remember, having so many positive attributes that tended to be common in most people. ”Hufflepuff. Home to those who are hard-working, patient, and loyal. At least those who seem to be that – to the Sorting Hat of course.” For years, Sari knew there was debate on the basis that the magical/enchanted hat worked off from, especially with the confusion of some students wandering up into a complete different house, opposite to who they seemed to be. But when Sari realised that the younger boy was just teasing her, she rolled her eyes, her explanation pretty much for…Nothing.
”Yup. A hat.” She repeated, a grin creeping to her lips as she watched his confusion arise. The blonde felt the exact same way during her First year in Hogwarts, recalling the events of her sorting as rather nerve wrecking – leading to many Owls being sent to her family as the weeks passed. As well as discussing it out with the members of the family she saw in Hogwarts. Curse being one of the youngest. ”The hat somehow…Gives a choice. Takes what you want and puts it into consideration. Just be prepared for anything.” She stated, trying to shower him with words of reassurance. But she knew she was doing a terrible job.
The flinch followed by the short laugh only made the Fawley snort in response – Jace’s acting skills being completely and utterly terrible.
