Celeste was sitting with her face down inside of her textbook, somewhat, studying with a housemate of hers that she shared classes with. Only somewhat because when Celeste was actually studying, it was impossible to get her out of her focused state. This was much lighter studying so she was able to readily chat with her housemates while also feeling like she was getting at least a little bit of work done and retaining a little bit of the lesson she was going over. It didn’t help that she had to look up every now and then to see something that her friend was pointing to in their textbook. It was fine though; she had plans to study later that night as well, even if she had to do it while she was in bed. They were both working on different subjects at the time though so, even though they shared the class together, her friend felt the need to point out things that didn’t make any sense when compared with what the professor lectured. She was trying to be patient but a little tick of irritation would form just behind her eyes if she was really interested in a passage she was reading and her friend would poke her with their wand to get her attention. A small mercy came when her friend got up to get another book from the shelves. ”Hey can you watch my things for me while I go get this book?” ”Sure,” she answered back, absentmindedly finishing a passage before looking up at her friend’s retreating figure.

IT ALWAYS STARTED LIKE AN ITCH AT THE TIP OF his fingers, incessant until it almost felt like it was itching his brain. That urge to just take. When people left things lying around, he felt... invited. 'Take me', they whispered. 'Steal me'. Because that's what he did. He was a thief, and he didn't think he was all that ashamed of it. Not after he'd stopped stealing just to survive. Not when it had started to become fun.
The book was lying on the library table untouched, the owner gone when he slid in to the seat opposite. He was an avid reader, why couldn't he? Quickly, Nate reached over and took the book. Not too fast, with a forced casualness that one could only do had they stolen before. Once it was in front of him he took a second to crack the spine, casually reading the inscription inside, the title and author. The little handwritten note that declared it belonging to somebody who was not Nate. Anybody else might place it back where he'd found it.
Standing up, Nate tucked the book under one arm without a single second look and carefully pushed his chair in before he turned and began walking away. The book was his now, he'd scribble out the handwritten scrawl, it was messy anyways. Careless.

Once her friend had walked away, she buried her head back into the book and began reading once again. She still needed to watch and make sure no one swiped anything off of the table or that no one touched their things so every now and then she would tilt her head up just enough to scan over the other side of the table. She finished a passage and, noticing that her housemate still wasn’t back, she kept at her watch duties. He eyes moved up once again from her textbook and traced the edge of the table. The back was still there, check, nothing had moved from the table check. All seemed well. Just at the edge of her vision she noticed a boy sit down at the table not too far away and her eyes fell back to her book. Seconds passed before sounds signaling the return of her housemate met her and she looked up and smiled, nodding as they spoke about their success with finding a book.
A frustrated yell broke through the calm of the library then. Startled, Rocky looked up to see who had made the sound. Just ahead of her, a girl was tossing her things around, clearly looking for something she had misplaced, before she yelled once again. ”Someone stole it! My favorite book! Someone stole my book and it was right here when I left the table and--” The librarian approached then, sounds of quieting leaving their lips as they approached the girl to figure out what was happening. Hadn’t there been a boy sitting there just moments ago? She looked around the library in a concerned manner, trying to see if she could get a glimpse of the boy she’d seen before standing up. ”Watch my stuff for me, please,” she commented hurriedly before walking just past where the librarian and the girl stood. This was where he had to have gone right? What did he look like again? She tried recalling who she’d seen while still heading for the exit of the library.

AWAY FROM THE TABLE WHERE HE'D FOUND THE book, Nate was looking down at the cover as he traced his way through the stacks towards the exit, so he didn't hear the initial commotion he'd left behind. Just the vaguest impression of a high pitched voice, but he paid no mind. In reality, he didn't feel all that guilty about what he'd done, he rarely did. In his opinion, whoever had left it behind had been opening up the possibility that it might disappear. If they had cared enough, they'd have taken it with them.
It was because of this blind ignorance that he didn't notice right away that he might have been followed. Turning his head as the librarian rushed past him in a flurry of an old, floral perfume and made him side step away from her. In the motion, he looked over his shoulder and recognised a small girl looking around expectantly, straining on her tiny little tip toes as if looking for someone. He also noticed a girl pulling at her hair not far behind her, talking rapidly to the librarian. And then he realised how he recognised the searching girl. She'd been sitting at the table with the book.
Quickly, Nate stuffed the book in the behind him waistband of his trousers, pulling it out at the back to fall over it and mask its shape. He couldn't rush off now, that'd be too obvious. If she was looking for him, he had to play it casually, he picked up another book from the nearest shelf, a dusty old thing, and turned to lean his back against the stack before cracking the spine. He made a show of burying his nose in it, pretending to read it very closely. No need to rush off, he hadn't done anything wrong.

She should have been paying better attention to his description. There were enough people in the library then that it would be hard to pick them from each other without more than a cursory glance at each of them. What had that boy that had been sitting there looked like? She reached the end of a set of shelves while she searched her mind for details she could recall about the kid she’d seen sitting in the chair before the girl had returned to the table. Was he tall? He had been sitting in the chair when she’d glimpsed him but she hadn’t seen him get up and walk away so she wasn’t sure. What color was his hair? Brown. Maybe. She huffed as she looked around the library from where she was to see if she spotted anything familiar. The exit was close by but there were still plenty of bookshelves near enough to the exit that people could get lost in. There was a group of girls to her left a few shelves down, giggling and meandering around the shelves. Closer to her to her right there was a younger student struggling to pull a tome off of the shelf. Further than that, she noticed a boy standing near the shelves with his face buried into a book. Was that him? He did have brown hair. Should she ask? She quickly shook off the idea. Maybe the boy who had been sitting there may have seen something, or he may have stolen the book himself. So if this is the boy, asking him would be useless.
Maybe she could be sly about it? She didn’t have much time. If this wasn’t the boy, she needed to keep looking. He looked close enough though that she needed to confirm. She kept herself calm, made her movements seem natural as she strolled near the area that he was standing. She decided to stay a bookcase away from him but made sure that he stayed in her sight before she pulled a book from the shelf and perused the contents. The book was pulled up close enough to her face so that she could look at the book as well as keep an eye on the boy but she didn’t see what the words on the page were saying. Her eyes ran over his form, trying to see if she could see the book anywhere on him. If he made any moves, she would follow him. If he made any quick movements, she would know for certain.

BE IT HIS OWN PARANOIA THAT THE PROSPECT of being caught, but Nate felt like there were eyes on him. He kept his head low regardless, making a show of licking his thumb as he very casually flipped the page on the book he held. He wasn't read at all, merely marking the page number and running his eyes across the lines blindly. Just until that burning sensation left the side of his face. He couldn't look up now, couldn't scan the room in case it was too obvious.
After a moment, though, Nate couldn't resist. He lifted his head, swiping a hand through his hair as if he was simply adjusting himself. His eyes scanned those around him, nobody was looking, until he spied a pair of eyes and a halo of dark, kinky hair. Was she looking at him, perhaps not as he shifted his gaze away casually, though on his way back he noticed she was still surreptitiously eyeing him. He scowled, shooting her a fowl expression as if to say 'what're you looking at', before he slapped the book shut and made a show of putting it back on the shelf.
Giving her a very unimpressed look from head to toe, he turned and began strolling towards the exit, as if he wasn't phased at all.
