Riley nodded at the story, it was absolutely something that would happen. Making anything off limits made people want to check it out more and more, which was why it was often dangerous to do so, just because he knew that there was a human desire to know for oneself and to prove that they were better than the warnings they were given to stay away. It was basic psychology. “Well at least Toby was okay.” Riley said with a laugh. He didn’t know what was actually dangerous about the abandoned house in the village, maybe just the fact that it was so old and falling apart, or, maybe it was haunted by a poltergeist or something. He had no clue. He had never looked into it much. “I’m glad he found him too.” Riley agreed, even if it was just for the obvious joy that the kitten brought to Kinsey. She explained how they shared custody and Riley smiled along with her laughter about how Toby took care of all of the important stuff and she got all of the fun. She agreed that the kitten made her happy and the suggested that maybe he was doing the same for Riley. Riley had been smiling, but he wasn’t sure it was because of the kitten. He was still sitting close to Kinsey. And they were talking. Like normal. It was everything he was missing. “Yeah, maybe he is.” Riley agreed rather than argue. He didn’t want to push it. “What are you going to do with him during the Holidays?” he asked, those were coming up rather quickly.

Kinsey laughed a little with Riley when he said it was good that Toby was okay. "Yeah, it definitely wouldn't have been very good if he or the other student got hurt while inside." Not that Toby always followed the rules. She remembered how just a few weeks ago the two of them went into the forbidden forest to see a unicorn and she came out with a twisted ankle. They'd been able to explain that away with some story of her tripping over a tree root, but she couldn't see how Toby would have talked his way out of an injury at Hogsmeade. If you follow the rules there, there shouldn't really be any chances for injury or anything.
She grinned at Riley when he said he was glad that Toby found the kitten. It was probably just because he liked that the little furball made her smile, but she wasn't going to go into more detail about that. She chuckled when Riley said that maybe Shadow was making him happy too and then nudged his shoulder with her own. "Oh, come on. How can something as cute as that not make you feel happy?" she teased, winking at Riley to make sure he knew she wasn't serious before reaching over to stroke the small kitten that he was still holding. She wasn't entirely sure if she was supposed to tease him the way she used to, but she couldn't help it. She felt so comfortable with him right now. Her eyebrows furrowed as she thought about the holidays. "I ... haven't really thought about that yet. I guess if I do stay here I could ask Toby to leave him with me ... but if I go home I'll definitely let Toby take him." She didn't want to deal with any familial responses to her bringing a kitten home. She knew Toby's family was likely used to that sort of thing with him. Still ... she didn't want to go home for the holidays. She'd much rather try to relax here. She glanced up at Riley curiously, ignoring the tingle in her stomach at the realization that the two were still sitting super close. "D-do you have any pets at home?" Kinsey asked curiously. It was interesting to realize that there were still things about Riley she didn't know. She wanted to know them all.

“Though explaining that they were rescuing a kitten might have gotten them into a little less trouble.” he remembered back to the stories about Harry Potter when he was a kid, and how he would always break the rules but for responsible reasons. Saving a helpless animal seemed very responsible to Riley. He would have done the same thing if he had been in that situation. “I wonder how the little guy got there. I can’t imagine someone would be heartless enough to just leave him there.” maybe he was a stray, Riley thought. Either way, he was glad that the kitten was in such wonderful care now. He knew both Kinsey and Toby and he knew they both would take great care of the creature.
“Okay he definitely does make me happy.” Riley agreed. It was true, it was nice to see the little creature play, Shadow didn’t have a care in the world. He was just content playing and snuggling up to Kinsey. Riley loved that. It was almost like having a baby, oddly enough, the thought of Kinsey raising the kitten with Toby didn’t make him jealous at all, but the thought of her raising a real baby with anyone other than him definitely did. Maybe because he knew that Toby and Kinsey didn’t have any trace of that kind of relationship. She then answered his question by admitting that she hadn’t thought about it. They still had some time before break, but Riley was curious. She said that if she stayed, she’d ask Toby to leave the kitten but otherwise, Toby would take it with him. Riley agreed, while she hadn’t said anything about her family out loud, he wasn’t sure how well the kitten would fare in the Bainbridge house. "Well if you stay, I can help you keep him busy." Riley said with a smile, giving them both an excuse to see one another again. Not that they were violent, but there are a lot. She asked if he had pets at home and he nodded. “My mom has a small dog. Lydia has a cat. I’ve got an owl and so does my dad.” he explained. He liked animals, but he didn’t really think he wanted a pet of his own, besides his owl, which was very easy to take care of. Maybe when he was more responsible.

Kinsey nodded when Riley added on that Toby and the American would probably be okay since they were trying to help the innocent, tiny kitten. "Yeah, probably," she snorted a little, "but that wouldn't stop Toby from freaking out if anyone caught him." Her eyebrows furrowed when he started to wonder why Shadow would have been there in the first place. "Oh I hope not! That would be so sad ..." Kinsey frowned, sad at the idea of her kitten being scared and lonely in that creepy house. "I'm really glad Toby found him," she added firmly. She couldn't imagine the small kitten still being there on his own.
She grinned when Riley admitted that Shadow made him happy. Good! She wanted to have something she could use to cheer him up if she thought he was having a hard day. If Shadow would do that, it would be perfect because he cheered Kinsey up too! She looked over at Shadow, who was still in Riley's hands, surprised to see that he was sleeping. "Riley, look! He fell asleep with you," she told him in a whisper, leaning a little closer just to make sure. She looked back to Riley, her eyes lighting up when he said he'd help her with Shadow if she stayed during Christmas break. "I'd like that," Kinsey said, hoping that Riley couldn't see how excited that idea made her. It also made up her mind for her. Kinsey was definitely going to stay during the break. Having a guaranteed time with Riley made her want to even more.
Riley explained about his family's pets and Kinsey smiled. "I have an owl too," she said with a smile, liking the fact that they both owned the same kind of animal. She loved Scuttle. Before she'd really made friends and had to deal with Dom on her own, he was her confidante with everything. That bird meant more to her than any other animal ever had. She looked at the fire, thinking about Scuttle, forgetting that only minutes before she'd been trying to keep the conversation between them going.

It became obvious that Kinsey hadn’t thought yet about what the cat was doing in the shrieking shack in the first place, and Riley didn’t like to be the one to bring it up and to trouble her mind with such things. She didn’t need any of those sad thoughts. “The good thing is that he’s here now.” Riley agreed when she said that she was glad that Toby had found him. Kinsey looked down at the kitten on him and pointed out that Shadow had fallen asleep. Riley looked down too and then gave a laugh at the way the kitten had fallen asleep. He tried not to let his laugh move his body as to not wake the kitten. “I guess he likes me.” it wasn’t exactly surprising, he knew that kittens slept for a good part of the day, but he knew that it made Kinsey happy to see, so he let it be. She agreed that she would like it if he helped her with the kitten over the break. He knew that she wouldn’t need the help, but he was glad she accepted his excuse. “Good.” He nodded, he fought the urge to give a wink, he didn’t want to push it.
Kinsey had an owl too, she told him. He knew that, at least he was pretty sure that he knew that. He was sure that she had brought him up a few times, plus, they had written to one another during the summer. But she could easily have borrowed one of her siblings owls for posting the letters. “Cool.” Riley nodded. He wanted to keep the conversation going, but he wasn’t sure what else to say. And it seemed like her mind had drifted. He just looked down at her, curiously. “Are you okay?” he asked.

She nodded when Riley said that it was a good thing that Shadow was there now. Kinsey smiled back at him, nodding and glad that he would say that to try and make her feel better. She could tell that was what he was doing. Riley knew her so well. Kinsey chuckled when he said that Shadow liked him. "Of course he does. Shadow has good taste." Of course, she thought Riley was one of the best people she knew, so she had good taste as well. He was just so nice to her. Kinsey knew he was just trying to be her friend, but she appreciated the fact that they were actually talking to one another now. It was so much better than avoiding one another like they did for the first few months of the school year.
As she stared into the fire, Kinsey's eyelids started drooping. She was tired. It was super early in the morning after all. She should go to bed, but she really didn't want to. She wanted to stay where she was, right next to Riley. She nodded when Riley commented that it was cool that she had an owl, but she was already drifting. Her eyes started to flutter closed a little as she listened to the fire crackle. It wouldn't hurt to take a short nap, right? She'd wake up the next time Riley said something, for sure. So she sighed and let her eyes close, oblivious to the fact that after about five seconds her head tilted to the side until it was on Riley's shoulder. She heard something, but Kinsey didn't want to get up or figure out what it was. She sighed and snuggled closer to the warmth on her left, pulling her feet up on the couch so she was closer to being a ball. Her mind wasn't focusing enough to realize that the was cuddling up to Riley. He felt so nice and comfortable.

Riley had turned to look at her just in time to see her head hit his shoulder. His body instantly started to feel like it was on fire. He loved the feeling of her touching him again, even in this innocent way, especially in this innocent way. She had fallen asleep. She trusted him enough to fall asleep next to him. Obviously, he was pretty sure that she hadn’t meant for her head to fall on his shoulder, but it didn’t matter, because that's where it was now. He wasn’t sure what to do and for a moment he was frozen, but then he took the arm closest to her and gently lifted it up so she could fall onto his chest instead and he could wrap his arm around her. The kitten stirred softly, but then settled back down on his lap. He was just about sure that if she woke up, she wouldn’t mind this new position, but he wasn’t sure how anyone else would feel about seeing it. He didn’t think she would care either, though, if anyone saw them. He certainly didn’t care. He watched her for a few moments, wondering if she would wake up, but when she didn’t, he leaned down and placed a kiss softly on her head before he rested his head gently on top of hers and let himself drift off too.

Even in her mostly asleep state, everything about this felt right. Kinsey felt more warm and comfortable and wanted than she'd felt in a long time. A part of her mind noticed when things around her changed and shifted, so the warmth was all around her instead of just on her left side, but she didn't even try to wake up enough so she could tell what was going on. She didn't care. For the first time in ages, she was falling asleep easily and not worrying about her dreams. She smiled, snuggling in just a little more when she felt something gently press the top of her head. Kinsey didn't think about the pressure, didn't even consider how she and Riley were situated.
It was a few hours later when Kinsey found herself slowly waking up. "Riley," she breathed, cuddling into the warmth beside her again, not bothering to open her eyes. She had no intention of making herself wake up faster than she needed to. She'd just had the happiest dreams, all of which were about her and Riley. In her dream world, he'd never been engaged and the two of them were happily together, just the way they'd been before. She sighed, opening her eyes enough to see the fire in front of her and then closed them again. She didn't want to get up. She was too comfortable right now.

Riley felt himself wake up gently when he felt the body stirring in his arms. He heard his name cooed out of her lips, softly, and his heart felt full and peaceful. He squeezed her a little tighter to himself, fully submitting himself to peace and comfort. But then a few moments later, his eyes shot open and he remembered what had happened the night before and where they were now. It was still dark in the common room, but he could see traces of sunlight out the windows around them. It had to be early. Very early. How long they had been asleep, he didn’t know, a few hours, probably. He looked around and couldn’t see anyone else around them, a wave of relief overcame him. No one had seen. “Kins.” he said, a little more seriously than his name had come from her mouth. “Kins we fell asleep here.” he explained, softening his voice a little so it didn’t carry up to the dorms. He didn’t want to wake her. He didn’t want to move or ruin this amazing moment, but he also didn’t want them to get caught. He didn’t want someone to see and then cause unnecessary drama for either of them.

Something wasn't right. Kinsey felt the shift in the atmosphere around her, but she didn't want to pay attention to it. She still didn't want to get up, despite the fact that she was slowly coming to the realization that she wasn't alone. She could hear someone's heartbeat and it was slowly getting faster and faster as the person tensed beside her. Kinsey still wasn't fully awake. Her mind felt foggy and she wasn't really registering everything around her. She didn't remember last night. Not yet, at least. Then she heard his voice. Riley's. A small smile crossed her face and she turned her head to look up at him, waking up a little bit more as she did so, but still not fully. She was still close enough to sleep that she hadn't remembered her dreams were fantasy. Riley wasn't her boyfriend anymore. He called her Kins again and her smile widened, until the rest of his words registered. They fell asleep where? Moaning softly, Kinsey started to sit up. What was the big deal? They were in the common room. Then she saw Shadow, curled up on Riley's lap and her jaw dropped as everything came rushing back. Her face flushed and she couldn't look back to Riley as she sat up a little straighter. "I-I'm sorry. I didn't mean to do that Riley, I swear." Her still partially-fogged mind worried that he'd be angry at her, thinking that she planned to fall asleep on him or cause him problems or something of the sort. In reality, Kinsey was mortified, but now that she was thinking on it she remembered how it happened. She just felt so comfortable with him. It was almost like last night things were back to the way they had been. Sitting beside him was so comfortable and she'd missed it. She didn't realize she'd fallen asleep on him until just now. "Y-you didn't have to let me," she added after a moment, still looking down at her lap.

Her first instinct was to apologize for falling asleep on him. He shook his head, “No Kinsey you’re find, this isn’t your fault at all. We both fell asleep. It was late.” he insisted, he really didn’t want her to feel bad about it. He had loved it. “Honestly it was the best night I’ve had all term.” he assured her, looking down at her for a moment before his gaze dropped down to the kitten on his lap. He had almost forgotten about the kitten, Shadow was the reason they had found each other last night in the first place. Kinsey had been down here with him while Riley passed by with the mindset to go on a walk. “You two should probably head back up to your dorm, though, before anyone else wakes up and sees and gives us a hard time about it.” he picked up the kitten and handed him over, back to his mother. Riley hoped that kinsey understood what he was saying. It wasn’t because he didn’t want to be seen with her, he was happy to be seen with her and he didn’t care if people saw him, but he knew that there were people who would make sure that Prissy and Lydia found out and he didn’t want anyone to confront Kinsey, at least, not without him around.

Riley told her not to apologize and Kinsey smiled a little. She wasn't sure if he was just saying that to be nice to her or not, though she did sense that he wasn't lying. "Thanks," she muttered softly, still not looking up to him. Then he made that comment about how it was his best night all term and she felt his sincerity. Surprised, Kinsey finally met his eyes, her smile widening even though she knew that shouldn't make her this happy. "Me too," Kinsey answered, wanting him to know she enjoyed it, whether or not he'd believe her. At least she said it. She looked down to Shadow when he did, liking how comfortable the kitten was with Riley. It didn't like everyone in their house, she'd come to learn over the past few days. It was a relief to her that her kitten liked the man she cared about so much. Her smile fell when Riley spoke next, handing Shadow back over to her. She accepted him easily, nodding slowly. "I guess we should," she agreed, looking up to him again. She knew Riley wasn't trying to hurt her. She could have sensed it from his intentions, but she didn't need to. He was protecting her, like always. She offered a fleeting smile, "Thanks for last night Riley. It was ... so nice to just talk again." She leaned over and wrapped her arms around him for a moment, giving him a tight side hug with one arm. Then she rose to her feet. "I guess I'll see you in class." Kinsey waved before walking towards the dorms, turning around to see him one more time before turning the corner. Oh, how she loved that boy.

She agreed that it was one of the best nights that she had ever had and his heart was glad to hear that she still felt the same way about him that he felt about her. She also agreed that they should go to their own dorms before anyone else saw them. She didn’t seem to take his words the wrong way and he was glad for that, he really didn’t want to hurt her. She stood up and said that it was great for them to talk and he nodded, “We’ll do it again sometime.” he insisted. And he really meant it. They had talked about hiding together and he kind of wanted to do that with her now, they could spend a little bit of time together without others around and could just be how they were, or, how they were trying to be now. “I’ll see you in class.” he agreed. He stood up as she stood up, but he waited for her to turn the corner before he turned his back on her. Watching her go was hard. But for some strange reason, he didn’t want her to turn around and not see him standing there.
