Kinsey explained that the art of skipping rocks was about flicking the wrist to make the rocks spin as they hit the water. It was the spin, she explained, that would make the rocks jump, or skip, before they sank into the cold ocean water. She showed him, and he watched her movements, trying to observe the exact way that she did it. He was good memorizing little things quickly, it was part of his skills of observation, so when he gave it a try when she was done, it wasn’t so surprising that on his first, real attempt, the rick skipped three times before sinking. It wasn’t quite as far as she had made hers go, but she had a lot more practice than he had and he was proud of what he had accomplished thus far. “Ooh, that cool. I get it now I think.” he admitted. It was rather satisfying to watch the rock jump over the water. It was a cool feet of physics. He bent down in search of another rock.

Riley was the best student, listening intently and watching as Kinsey showed him what to do. It was easy to show him and Kinsey was excited to see what he could do, and wondered how well he would do at it. She stepped back, watching as he ... did it perfectly? Her jaw dropped open and she turned to stare at him, her open mouth slowly transforming into a smile. She squinted a little, stepping closer to him. "Are you sure you've never skipped rocks before?" she asked, paying attention to his intentions because she could. She smirked, "Or did you just want to see if I could explain it somehow and then you could impress me by being amazing?" Kinsey tilted her head to the side as she waited to hear what Riley would say. She was definitely finding it hard to believe that he'd never done this before.

Riley laughed when she asked him if he was sure that he had never done this before, he shook his head to assure her that he hadn’t. “Not once in my life.” he promised, a smile wide on his face. He did feel rather pleased with himself, maybe a little more so after having seen her face. “It’s easy to copy once I see how you do it. Obviously, there’s more skill involved, but I get the technique.” he explained, knowing she would likely understand, since she knew that he was able to pick up on little things well. “Who taught you how to skip rocks?” he asked her, curious how she had come to pick up the skill herself.

Riley confirmed that he hadn't skipped rocks before and Kinsey narrowed her eyes at him. She believed him, but it was ridiculous that he was this good his first time trying. Then again, she wasn't super surprised. She made a face at him when he said that it was easy once he saw her do it. "I'll have you know, that's lucky for you. It took me a long time to actually figure out how to skip rocks. For the longest time mine just plopped into the water." Kinsey sighed, smiling at him a moment later. She wasn't really angry at him. At his question, she froze for a second, "Dustin," she answered softly. "He taught me on one of our vacations years ago. I practiced every time I saw a body of water after that." She tried to keep her mind focused on the positive memories instead of her latest one with her brother, her last interaction with him. The one where Dustin made her choose. "We'll have to have a contest sometime," Kinsey commented, more as a distraction than anything else.

Riley was tickled by how impressed he had made Kinsey. She told him that it took her a white to get the technique down. “Well if you had spent your childhood reading books about observation and the human brain, maybe it would have taken you a little less time to get the hang of it.” he smirked back, obviously just teasing her. He liked to tease her a bit, it was fun and he knew that she didn’t take it seriously. She knew that he loved her and would never say anything like that with the goal of hurting her. She explained that Dustin had taught her and he nodded, he could see that Kinsey didn’t really want to talk about that, so he didn’t press it. He wasn’t sure what had happened between them, but they must have fought before he left. “Okay, when school starts again we’ll have a contest.” he laughed. He then glanced down at his watch. “We should get going to breakfast.” he told her, they had taken a significant break on their walk to the cafe, he didn’t want it to get too busy before they got there.

She scrunched her nose at him when he teased her back. "Yeah yeah," she mumbled. She wasn't really upset, Kinsey was actually pretty impressed by how quickly he'd picked up on the sport, but she didn't have to admit that, did she? She could just pretend like it annoyed her. Riley was smart enough he'd probably see straight through it. "I'm going to have to make sure I practice so I can show you that all my experience is better than your in-the-moment observation skills," she retorted, smiling once she got it out. She nodded as he agreed to a contest when school started. She would practice because while Kinsey wasn't super competitive, she found that she did want to beat Riley in this. Interesting. He mentioned that they should go to breakfast and Kinsey looked over to him, chuckling a little. It was cute how he had everything planned. She loved it. "Okay, let's go then," she agreed, moving over to him and taking his hand again. "Lead the way." Kinsey sighed as they started walking. She couldn't imagine a better start to her morning and was so excited to see what else the day would bring. As long as she was with Riley- which she would be- she was sure that it would be amazing. --- the end --- @riley
