THE DESPERATION OF THE KISS EASED IN TO softer reverence, and Eli went with it willingly. He hadn't the capability to question what was happening, leaning in to the moment as one of his hands came up to rest against her neck, his thumb caressing her cheek. He parted his lips as he drew a breath from her, his eyelids fluttering, but she pulled away before he could lean back in.
Eli's eyes opened slowly, and he stared down at her smile. She'd kissed him and she'd meant it, by the looks of things. He wasn't thinking about the courtyard anymore, but he definitely believed her now. But he was still blank with shock. Ashley had kissed him and she was leaning in again when something made her stop. His expression dropped and he thought she regretted it as her face crumpled with the realisation of what she'd done.
"Wa-" He reached for her, but she was already pulling away. Eli started to panic at the same time she did. She regretted it, it was a spur of the moment thing. He wanted her to stop thinking about it, to lean in once again and forget about the technicalities of it, but he didn't want to scare her away. "Hey, it's okay." He nodded his head rapidly. "It's cool." Except his face was flushed, his smile shaky and his heart still racing. Was it okay? God, he hoped so.

Ashley didn't want to rush away. A part of her felt like she needed to, like she needed to figure out what just happened and evaluate it all, but she didn't want to leave Eli. What she really wanted to do was kiss him again. Her cheek felt hot from where he'd touched it softly and she ached to have his arms around her again, but she couldn't tell him that. Maybe ... maybe Eli wouldn't read into this too much. Maybe he'd think she was just trying to convince him that she didn't care about that Riley guy, and wouldn't realize how she really felt about him. Still, she felt the urge to leave and escape. She took a step from him, freezing when he called for her to wait, his word cutting off in the middle. He didn't want her to go. Ashley turned back to face him in time to see him reaching for her. He wasn't even a step away. "Okay," Ashley answered in response to him asking her to wait, her own hesitant smile creeping onto her face. She wouldn't leave if he was asking her to stay. Eli insisted that it was okay and cool and her smile grew and she nodded back. "Thanks," she answered softly, struggling to force herself to look at his eyes instead of his lips. Oh, all she wanted in that moment was to step back in and kiss him again. If she did, would he let her? Would he kiss her back like he had moments before? She was so wrapped up in looking at him and fighting what she really wanted to do that she didn't even realize she was standing there in silence, just staring at the guy of her dreams. ELI COULD HARDLY PROCESS THE FACT THAT Ashley had kissed him. He'd envisioned he scenario a dozen times in a dozen different ways, but in every iteration it had been Eli who'd finally plucked up the courage to make a move. He'd never been able to imagine a world where she wanted to kiss him first. Even when he'd thought she liked him, it just felt too far out this time around. But, she had and no matter how unbelievable it was he had to figure that out. And that was hard when all he really wanted to do was kiss her again.
"You kissed me," He said after a moment, mostly because he needed to say it out loud. His voice was shocked, a slight tinge of mad laughter tightening the back of his throat. "It's so quiet, but you kissed me." He tilted his head back, barked a laugh and stared at the sky for a second, until his vision wavered. Then he turned back to her in a panic, "Not that it's a big deal!" He blurted, trying to make her feel more at ease about it. "I mean it is a big deal, but it doesn't have to be a big deal," He rambled senselessly, gesturing with his hands so erratically that he almost hit her. "It's just a kiss- I mean a kiss is a kiss, but you kissed me and-" He swallowed roughly, his voice shaking as his hands went suddenly limp at his sides, mouth slapping shut.
"I'm not making any sense." He said, shaking his head with a tentative smile as he finally looked at Ashley again to gauge where her head was it. But, he just couldn't tell. Lifting a hand he palmed his forehead and shook his unruly fringe as he closed his eyes for a second. "Sorry," He muttered, his head still scrambled as he took his hand away and looked at her, his eyes softer and less round. "Please say something..." He begged her, eager to fill the chasm of silence that had ripped open between them the moment he'd closed his mouth. "Anything."

The first words out of Eli's mouth were stunned, almost like he couldn't believe that she kissed him. Ashley definitely felt a bit embarrassed about that. What if he didn't want her to kiss him? What if he was stunned because he didn't know how to tell her that he didn't see her like that? She thought that maybe he'd started to realize that she liked him, what after him seeing her jealous in the library that one day and all. Apparently not and the thought made her feel a bit more embarrassed. He mentioned it being quiet and her kissing him and Ash's mind flashed back to a memory of him telling her that she was so quiet, but that it was a good thing. That was last year, when things were going so well between them. Did he still think it was a good thing. She started to smile, feeling a little more confident now. He had to mean it in a good way, he just had to! She wanted to ask if she'd crossed a line, but at the same time Ashley didn't really want to talk about it. She didn't want Eli to confirm that she had. Eli started rambling then, his words fumbling as he talked about it not being a big deal, but yes being a big deal and it was a kiss and she'd initiated it. At one point he almost hit her, but he didn't. He seemed so awkward and nervous, she couldn't help but wonder if the kiss upset him and he was trying not to show it, which was definitely a disappointing thought, but she tried not to show that. Instead, she smiled softly, hoping maybe that would help him feel less awkward. Ashley took a half a step back, mind racing to try and figure out how she could fix this. Then she surged forward, wrapping her arms around him in a tight hug. "It's fine, you don't have to apologize at all," she answered in a soft voice. "W-we don't have to talk about it." Ashley knew she was taking the coward's way out, but she didn't want to make anything awkward between them. Even though she definitely already had by kissing him. She just couldn't stand the thought of losing him again, especially because of a moment of weakness where she couldn't keep herself from kissing him. After a moment she pulled away, just enough to look up at him as a thought occurred to her. It was something she'd meant to ask him forever ago, but she kept forgetting. "You got the invitation to the Fontaine New Year's party, right? D'you ... d'you think you'll be able to come?" Ashley couldn't stop the hopeful expression from covering her face as she looked up at him. She wanted Eli there. If he came, she didn't care who else did. Maybe ... maybe he'd let her convince him to come if he wasn't planning on it. She didn't give him the chance to answer before she started trying to convince him. "Lots of people are invited and it should be a bunch of fun. You don't have to dress formal or anything." She rolled her eyes, "though I'm sure my parents will make me wear some sort of a nice dress." Ashley shook her head, bringing herself back to the conversation at hand, "But you don't have to! I mean, you can dress however you want- well, if you want to come. You still don't have to if it makes you uncomfortable or something." Ashley paused a second before adding a little more, "I'd love to have you there, though," she trailed off, breaking their eye contact. Now it felt like she was begging him. She needed to stop. It was just ... she wanted him there so badly and she didn't know if he was willing to come. The uncertainty was definitely getting to her. Elijah Theron Fleming

THE MOMENT ASHLEY STEPPED BACK FROM HIM, Eli felt like he'd said something wrong. But, he couldn't stop himself from talking. It didn't help that Ashley hadn't said anything at all, but she had a way of making him stupid and when she finally did speak he was already on a roll. He couldn't tell if she wanted to talk about it or not, if he'd put her off by opening his mouth, or not. He just wanted her to say something he could answer. Ask him a question, kiss him again. Anything to shut him up. And then she did.
"Yes," He said without even thinking about it. She'd invited him to a fancy Fontaine party and he would freak out about it later, but all that mattered was that she wanted to see him again. Eli thought wryly that if he were listening to himself he'd want a bit of space, but he didn't say that. Too pleased that she'd thought of him. "I'm there. Definitely." Nodding his head rapidly, he fiddled with his hands in front of him. He thought of her in a dress, at a party. Maybe dancing with her. It'd be like a redo of the ball at Ilvermorny, except they'd do it right this time and he wouldn't get detention. A smile grew on his face.
"I want to," He assured her, stepping closer again so that she knew he was serious. He wasn't exactly the 'formal' type, but he could be for her. He was sure he had a suit somewhere, they'd gone to a wedding once, though it'd definitely need an extension on the leg - he'd grown about 8 inches since then. He'd figure it out, unwilling to frighten her with his own anxieties. "But, I'll see you before that, right?" He asked expectantly, almost reaching for her but dropping his hand last minute. "I gotta give you you're present."

Ashley couldn't stop the grin that covered her face the second Eli agreed. He'd come! He said he'd come to her party and she 100% believed him. She didn't have any reason not to. She still wasn't sure if he'd feel comfortable at the Fontaine Mansion or if it would drive a wedge between them, but how could it when she'd be there? Ashley would do her best to make sure he knew she wanted him there, to help him fit in. It wouldn't hurt that there should be lots of Hogwarts students coming too. It shouldn't just be her high-society friends. Even if it was just them, she wanted to spend her time with Eli. She wanted to dance with him and talk and just laugh together. She had a picture of it all in her mind, even though she was trying not to get her hopes up too high. "Great! I'm so excited," Ashley admitted, unable to contain her enthusiasm. Now that Eli said he was coming, she was more than delighted. Eli stepped closer, confirming that he wanted to come and Ashley smiled up at him, breathing out a laugh. "Good. I thought I was going to have to beg you to come," she teased. Granted, she all but did beg him, but that was neither here nor there. She was a little surprised when he asked if he'd see her before that, reaching for her and then stopping. Her expression dropped for a fraction of a second before she pulled the smile back, nodding with a shrug of her right shoulder as she looked up with a small smirk on her mouth. "If you want to, I'm definitely game." To anyone watching them, she probably looked like she was flirting. She was, whether or not Eli noticed. She couldn't help it anymore. He mentioned giving her a present and her face lit up. Ashley grabbed his arm, jumping up in her excitement. "Ooooh, yes! We should exchange our gifts during the break for sure." Any excuse to see Eli was a good one in her book. Ash was glad she wouldn't have to go all break without seeing him again, like they had last year. That was all but torture. "Have you heard of the Festival thing in Hogsmeade? Maybe we could meet during that sometime?" Her expression hopeful, Ash waited to see what he'd say. From what she'd heard, the festival lasted for about a week, maybe more. There should be some time during that week when they could meet, right? "We could write during the break and figure it out that way, if you want." Yes, Ash was giving herself any excuse to communicate with Eli. She didn't want to go the entire break without talking to him. Not after today, even if they never brought up the kiss and if it never turned into anything. Elijah Theron Fleming

AT THE VERY LEAST, ELI TOOK COMFORT IN THE fact that - despite their kiss and the awkward silence afterwards - he was still able to make her smile. The prospect of a fancy party didn't completely appeal to him, but as long as Ashley would be there, he didn't mind at all. Plus, the excitement clear on her face almost made him excited, too. "Nope," He said, rocking on the heels of his feet. "You don't have to beg me to come to a fancy party." He scrunched his nose like the notion was a bit ridiculous.
"Right..." Eli said, nodding gratefully as he realised they had a perfectly acceptable reason to meet before New Years. "The Winter Festival, I saw the flyers for that." He wasn't staying at Hogwarts for the holidays, but that didn't mean he couldn't visit the little neighbouring village. "Say maybe... the 28th?" He offered, giving him enough time with his family that they wouldn't nag him about it, and her the same. "I'll meet you by the gates?" And then he realised that was probably their cue to walk back, or separate. "I'll still write you, though." He said, putting his hands in his pockets. "You can tell me how the Fontaine's celebrate Christmas." He smile at her, his body angled back the way they came. "Do you... wanna walk back together?" He asked tentatively.
- END?

Ashley laughed at the look on Eli's face as he told her she didn't have to beg. "That's a relief," she teased, nudging his shoulder. She just couldn't help but feel relieved that things didn't seem to be awkward between them. Eli was treating her as he always did and she was so glad over that fact. She didn't want her kiss to ruin everything between them, and at least for now it didn't seem like it had. He remembered the Winter Festival when Ashley brought it up and she nodded along, waiting for him to say something. He suggested the 28th and she smiled, "Sounds good to me!" It shouldn't be a problem. Ashley was pretty sure that her parents would let her go anywhere she wanted, as long as she didn't go alone. All it meant was that she'd have to sweet-talk Joe or bribe him or something, which shouldn't be difficult to do. The two of them were getting along really well lately. Ashley nodded again, "Yeah, by the gates sounds good." Then she laughed. "You'd better write me! I'm only going to tell you about my Christmas if you tell me about yours." She narrowed her eyes, making her expression more serious for just a second before she chuckled. At Eli's last question, she rolled her eyes. "Is that even a question? Come on Eli, we should head to dinner," she said, grabbing his hand and pulling him along for a few seconds before letting go. She didn't really want to release him, but she also wasn't sure how comfortable he'd be with her pulling him around after what happened a short while ago. In all honesty, she wasn't really sure about anything right now, except for the fact that her feelings for Elijah Fleming were growing stronger. --- the end --- Elijah Theron Fleming
