Dom nodded slowly when Riley said that he wasn't mad at her. "Thanks. If you don't want to tell me things, you don't have to," she said softly, trying to make peace. She didn't want to argue with him and didn't want him to think she was mad at him, or anything similar. She liked having relaxing conversations with Riley, where she didn't need to worry about what she said. Her eyes widened when he started talking about Kinsey's new guy. Fontaine?! She desperately wanted to ask if it was Joe, but how any American Fontaine's there were. "And Kinsey is into him? Why, do you think they're dating or something? Is he in the same year as you two?" Kinsey tried to blend the last question into the group. If he was a seventh year, it was Joe and she didn't know how she felt about that. Did she snog in the shrieking shack with a guy that was interested in Kinsey? It just ... felt wrong. She smiled and nodded, "Yeah! I mean, it's all the way in New York, but it should be fun." She was really looking forward to it.

Riley could understand why Dom might think that he didn’t want to tell her things, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. He wanted to tell her everything, but the thing was, that was about all there was to tell. It wasn’t that he didn’t want to tell her the details of the event, it was that he didn’t want to relive them himself. He didn’t see a point. There wasn’t anything that she could do if she knew another little detail that he left out. “That won’t happen.” he promised her. Dom asked a lot of questions about why he thought that Kinsey had her new boy and Riley shrugged, “They just are around each other a lot, I think. He’s definitely into her, I’m not sure if she feels the same, but there’s something there.” he wasn’t sure what else to say about it. He didn’t ask a lot of questions because he didn’t really want to know. “Yeah he’s in our year.” he was in their classes, at least. “All the way in New York? Who do you know in New York?” he asked her. That would mean she’d have to fly across the ocean just to go to a party. That sounded like a lot, but it must just mean a lot to her.

Dom felt a little more relaxed as Riley confirmed that he wanted to talk with her about this kind of thing. It was something that she felt like she knew, but at the same time she didn't. Or maybe she was just a little worried that now they didn't see one another every day their friendship wouldn't be as strong as it used to be. He started explaining a little more about Kinsey and Joe, saying that they were together all the time and that Joe was definitely into her. Dom didn't know how she felt about that. It was strange, cause she already found the guy so appealing. He was fun and flirtatious and while Dom was definitely not ready for a serious relationship with anyone right now, she enjoyed spending her time with him. But ... what if he was the kind of guy who liked to lead girls along? And what if Riley didn't like the fact that she knew him. "Do you think she would tell you if she liked him?" Dom asked, curious. At his next question, her smile was a little hesitant. "Joe Fontaine," she answered after a moment. "He came here on the last Hogsmeade trip and asked me to be his date at his family's New Year's Eve party ..." Dom trailed off and watched Riley, trying to read his response to that.

Riley shrugged when she asked if he thought that Kinsey would tell him if she wanted to date someone. “It doesn’t really matter, it’s not my business. She can tell me if she wants but I don’t expect it from her.” he would feel good if she told him, but he wouldn’t hold it against her if she didn’t tell him. She didn’t owe him anything and he didn’t want her to feel like she had to tell him these things. Especially because he could imagine that her new boy might not like it if she told her ex everything all of the time. Dom told Riley that Joe Fontaine had been the one to invite her to the party in New York. Joe Fontaine? Riley was fairly sure that was the same boy Kinsey was always with. “Dom I’m fairly sure we’re talking about the same person… Don’t tell me you like him too…” Riley shook his head with a sigh. A part of him wonder if Joe just wanted to replace him in every aspect of his life. Maybe he’d try to take his fiancee too.

Dom could tell that Riley didn't like that question very much. After knowing him so well for so long, she could read him most of the time, even though she knew she wasn't as good at that as he was. He was serious about getting married and following his parents wishes, but he obviously still cared about Kinsey. "That makes sense," Dom said, not having any other questions she wanted to ask him about the girl in question. The look on his face when she said Joe's name was exactly what she thought it would be. Dom shrugged at his question, "Yeah, I am pretty sure it's the same person too, but I don't like him like that. Not at all. We met a few months ago in Hogsmeade and explored the Shrieking Shack for a bit. He was fun to be with, just like my date the other month with Kai Jones, you know? I'm not looking for anything serious, as you know, it was just a bit of fun and so when he asked me if I wanted to come to New York for New Year's, I thought why not? I've never been there before, I'm sure there'll be tons of people there ... and I don't think he expects anything out of it either." Dom bit her lip for a second, not really knowing what else she could say about it. Would Riley understand?

Riley listened and tried to keep an open mind as Dom explained how she had come to know Joe Fontaine and what she thought about him. While he didn’t like the boy much because of Kinsey, it didn’t mean that he had any right to choose who Dom was trying to be friends with. Dom needed friends besides him, he knew. She needed people who could be around her and have fun with her, which wasn’t something that he had been doing lately. He hadn’t been the best friend. “Well, I think you should go then. I’m sure you’ll have a great time. And if you like him… I mean I trust your judgement. Just as long as you’re not going to let him replace me.” he wouldn’t admit out loud his little worry that Joe was trying to edge him out of his own life, but it was there, at least a little bit. And maybe a little bit more now.

Dom was a little worried to hear what Riley had to say about her going somewhere with Joe. It was clear to her that he wouldn't like the guy, since Joe was showing some sort of an interest in Kinsey. The thing was, Dom didn't want to upset him. If she thought going to New York with Joe would upset Riley, she'd cancel it in a heartbeat. That didn't mean she wanted to cancel, but Riley meant enough to her that she would. His first words were that she should go and Dom let out a breath she didn't even know she'd been holding. She smiled as Riley showed just how understanding and good he was, saying that he trusted Dom's judgment. Dom scoffed when he mentioned not wanting Joe to replace him. "Riley," she started, reaching over to put a hand on his shoulder reassuringly, "You are my best friend. You know me like no one else on this earth does. No matter who I may date or like, you will always be my best friend. No one can replace you." She then smiled and shrugged one shoulder as she released his shoulder. "I just like having people who are easygoing to flirt with and Joe happens to be pretty good at that. I teased him mercilessly that day and he didn't seem to mind it at all. Sometimes he teased me right back." Dom took another swallow of chocolate milk. "I don't want to date him, I'm just going on a fun date with him. Does that make sense?" She wanted to make sure Riley understood where she was coming from.

Dom assured Riley that he was her best friend and would always be her best friend. He knew that, he really did. And it wasn’t like he was seriously jealous of Joe. As much as he loved Dom, he didn’t want to date her or be flirty with her. He never had seen her in that way, so if a person did, he shouldn’t even think about standing in their way, and he wasn’t. “Well I’m glad that you found someone that you can be like that with, then. Really, I am.” he promised, and he did mean it. He was glad for her. He wanted her to be happy as much as he wanted Kinsey to be happy. “Yes it makes sense. Just be careful?” he asked. He wasn’t sure what she should be careful of, but he just wanted to make sure that she really knew this guy and watched out for any major red flags.

Dom chuckled a little when Riley said he was glad that she could find someone to flirt and have fun with. "He's not the only one," she told Riley honestly. "I have a few friends and people that I can hang out with and have fun with and flirt with, he's just the one that asked me to come to a New Year's party with him." She appreciated Riley's support, and wanted to make sure that he knew she would be fine. She knew how to take care of herself and she wasn't about to let someone she hardly knew hurt her. She rarely let people in deeply enough that they could hurt her anymore. Not after Ethan. Riley was one of the few people that could. He knew too much about her to not be able to hurt her if he wanted, but she knew Riley. She knew that he would never do anything to hurt her. He was her closest friend now. She nodded, "I'm always careful, Riley, and I'm sure Kinsey is too." She smiled at him, looking down and a little surprised when she realized her hot chocolate was gone. "Okay, enough serious talk for us. Let's get out there and enjoy this festival!" Dom said with a grin, sliding to the end of the booth and rising to her feet, extending a hand to her best friend. --- the end --- @riley
