Riley could understand why Kinsey wanted to meet her family in the village for the festival rather than spend the whole break at home with him. He was sure that she didn’t want to answer questions about her life to her siblings and parents, and she probably didn’t want to see her siblings who would want to talk about the gossip of them kissing, which was still spreading throughout the castle. Riley saw students lean in to whisper with their friends when he passed them in the corridor. It was nice to have them all gone. “Of course I want to.” he promised her as they walked down towards the Great Hall. She asked if he really wanted to be seen there with her and he nodded, “Kinsey I want to be seen with you everywhere.” he felt so silly that he had to assure her of that every time they hung out, but, for a while they had ignored one another. This was still new, he supposed.

It was strange to Kinsey how their conversations lately always seemed to come down to this: them wanting to spend time together even when they shouldn't. He was engaged and not to Kinsey. That was a well-known fact, but despite it Kinsey wanted to be with him all the time, but she couldn't. At least he wanted to be with her during this break. They were making plans and Kinsey was mentally telling herself to enjoy this. This would likely be the last real chance she had to be alone with him before he married Priscilla so she needed to make memories she could carry with her. She smiled up at him, "Thanks Riley. I'd love to go to the festival with you."
Suddenly Shadow started squirming in her arms. Kinsey turned her attention to the little kitten, but in a matter of seconds he somehow got away from her and started scampering down the corridor. Kinsey instantly started chasing the kitten. Toby would never forgive her if she lost him. He ran off the stairs and Kinsey caught a glimpse of him squeezing in through a tiny crack in the door. She whined. Of course they would be on the third floor. "Shadow?" she whispered, door creaking ominously as she opened it. She reached behind herself, hoping Riley followed her and wanting to take his hand. She'd never come here before. It was forbidden, after all.

As they began to walk down the stairs to the third floor, the kitten began to stir and ended up jumping out of Kinsey’s arms. Riley wasn’t too concerned, but he could see that Kinsey was. Maybe she was worried that Shadow would get himself lost. Riley thought that most cats figured out the castle on their own and knew how to get back to their owners, but anything that bothered Kinsey bothered him, so he followed her quickly, down the third floor corridor and he watched as the little black kitten slid into a track in the way and disappeared. Kinsey ran and opened the nearby door. “Hey, maybe he’s okay? I’ve heard heard of a pet getting lost at Hogwarts…” he suggested. He didn’t want her to stop if she wanted to go, but he also didn’t want her to worry. It seemed like she wanted to go after him so Riley followed. “Kinsey, this corridor is forbidden…” he echoed her thoughts.

Riley was right behind her. Not only did she touch his arm, but after just a second he was speaking too, telling her that Shadow was probably okay, even if he was lost. Kinsey's hand slid down his arm until she entwined her fingers with his. She didn't say anything, taking a step through the door and gently pulling Riley behind her. If he wanted to stay behind she wouldn't force him to come. "I know it is," she whispered, her eyes searching the dark corridor, "but Shadow's in here somewhere. If I lose him ... Toby might never speak to me again, and I'd feel terrible if anything happened to him." She bit her lip as she stepped further inside, feeling a bit more nervous now but also determined. "Shadow?" she whispered before muttering, "Lumos," and trying to use the light to find him. This was not as easy as she thought it would be. She couldn't see the kitten anywhere.

Kinsey intertwined her fingers with his and basically ignored what he was saying about pets not really getting lost. This wasn’t the first cat to get out of someone's hand, but, Riley knew how much Shadow meant to Kinsey and how much it meant to her friendship with Toby right now. He would held her however he could. He held onto her hand as they walked further into the corridor. She pulled out her wand and cast lumos as he did the same, following her example. It was dark even still, and the light from their wands didn’t help them to see the little, black kitten. “Should we split up and look for him? Or do you want to stay together?” Riley asked, lowering his voice, just in case.

Holding Riley's hand made walking into the forbidden corridor a lot easier for Kinsey, though she didn't really know why. It probably had something to do with the fact that she just loved being with him. Him holding her hands was reassuring and helped calm her, which would hopefully be able to help her find Shadow. Kinsey was slightly annoyed by how difficult it already was to find the kitten. Where did he go? She knew Riley was right about lost pets coming back, but with her luck lately Shadow would never be able to find his way back, which was why she felt such an urge to find him herself. Riley asked if they should split up and Kinsey turned to face him, biting her lip as she tried to make up her mind. She liked holding his hand ... but maybe if they split up they'd be able to find him easier. "Umm ... split up?" she asked quietly, not sure if she was making the right choice. "I'm sorry. I know this is stupid. I just need to find him." Kinsey turned away from Riley, feeling like an idiot for letting Shadow go in the first place.
"How about I'll look on the left side of the corridor and in any rooms I see there and you can do the same thing on the right?" Kinsey suggested after just a second, slowly releasing his hand and taking steps to the left. This really shouldn't be so hard. She started moving down the corridor, jumping slightly at every sound. She opened the first door she came across, hesitantly sticking her head inside, but there didn't seem to be anything dangerous in there. She looked around the room carefully before coming back out again. "Nothing in there," she told Riley in a soft voice.

Kinsey suggested that they split up to search and then apologized if what they were doing was stupid. While iley still wasn’t convinced that it was necessary, he didn’t think that it was stupid. He understood her desire to find the kitten and he wanted to be supportive and help her. “It’s not stupid. I get it.” he insisted. He began to search the doors on the right like she told him to and she went to search the doors on the left. After two doors, he heard scratching on the third. When he opened it, the little kitten came out and rubbed against his leg. Riley chuckled, reached down, and picked up the little beast just as Kinsey said he wasn’t over there. “That’s because he’s right here.” Riley told her, walking to meet her.

Kinsey wasn't altogether surprised when Riley said she wasn't being stupid, and that he understood. Even if he did think she was being stupid, he wouldn't tell her that, but she could sense that he wasn't lying. Kinsey smiled at him, nodding before she began her search. She didn't like how dark this corridor was and felt bad for her poor kitten, stuck here somewhere. She was, perhaps, being a little more thorough than she needed to be as she searched for Shadow, but she didn't want to leave him stuck in a room. When heard Riley saying that he'd found Shadow, Kinsey's worry left. She ginned as Riley approached her, holding the kitten securely in his hands. "Oh, thank you Riley!" Kinsey exclaimed, giving him a huge hug. She didn't expect him to hug her back, since he was holding Shadow, but she couldn't resist. "Do you want to carry him downstairs, or want me to give another go?" Kinsey's tone was playful, now that Shadow was found she felt much lighter, ready to go eat. If Riley did give her the kitten, she would definitely hold him more securely, but she also wouldn't mind if Riley wanted to hold him.

Riley wasn’t entirely expecting such a big thanks for finding the kitten, but he wasn’t opposed to it. He quite liked being the hero, it reminded him of how he used to feel around her, when he used to be her hero and save her from tripping down the stairs. When he protected her from her bully and from her sister, which she still only vaguely knew about. “No need to thank me. He’s just a little adventurous,” Riley smiled. “I can carry him down.” Riley had got a good grip on the squirmy little guy. “Though maybe you should think about a harness and a leash or something.” he teased her.
