Ashley was excited for her blind date, but at the same time she wasn't. There was a thrill in signing up to meet someone new, a thrill that Ashley was used to after signing up for the same thing last summer to try and get her mind off of a specific boy. Now, she couldn't help but hope that her date was with that boy. She knew he signed up to participate in the blind dates and while she knew it was highly unlikely that they would be paired with one another, she really wanted to be. So, hoping that she'd be meeting up with Elijah Fleming, Ashley dressed up nicely. She wore dark skinny jeans with a light blue, long sleeved lace top and a fashionable beige jacket. Knowing it would likely be cold, she also brought gloves, a scarf and beanie that matched. Her hair was down and curled loosely, the way she thought Eli seemed to like it best. Or maybe it was just the way she liked it best. Either way, Ash looked great and felt totally ready for this date. She sat on the bench outside of the Blishwick Dating Service offices, waiting for her date to show up. Once he arrived, they'd take a portkey to Scotland, where they would go Kelpie watching for the Loch Ness "monster." She was pretty excited to go, which explained why she showed up ten minutes early. As she waited, Ashley looked from side to side, tapping her foot lightly as she watched all the people shopping for Christmas in Hogsmeade. She got so caught up watching a cute little family, she didn't even notice when someone approached her. Nathaniel David Forrester

THOUGH NATE DIDN'T USUALLY GO HOME FOR Christmas, he was getting older and the orphanage had given him the leeway after a clean record come time to separate for the holidays. He'd requested specifically to get away as he'd felt the need for a break. He'd been caught stealing too often and it was only December. The risk was too high, and he thought the bitter bustle of London at Christmas would be better. Plus, he just so happened to have a date.
Nate didn't really date, as a rule. It was messy and he never really opened up to others as a rule. It felt like an unnecessary risk, and he preferred his romance fast, fleeting and forgettable. So, when he'd filled in the form for the Blishwick Blind Dating Event, he wasn't sure what to expect. Maybe he thought it'd serve as some distance between Sari and Isabel. Two girls he couldn't quite shake. Or maybe he thought a blind meeting would make it easier to have frivolous fun, he didn't know.
Though, despite his doubts, he still arrived at the meeting point dressed smart. Nate had an overwhelming desire to appear better than he was. His crisp shirt pressed to perfection, partially tucked in to smart, but slim jeans. He wore a navy epsom coat over the top, a little big when he'd stolen it, but charmed to fit his frame perfectly for the time being. He felt like somebody else outside of his uniform, or his worn hoodie that he wore at home. But, still better than what he really was, a throwaway orphan and a thief.
Breath misting out in front of him, Nate arrived and stood out front, rubbing his gloved hands together and shifting his weight from foot to foot. His booted feet crushing on a patch of partially melted ice. He turned his head to search for who his blind date may be, his mind entirely blank as to what he might. He didn't expect to see Ashley, from the owlery, waiting a little ways away, but very much present. He hadn't spoken to her since he'd pulled her from a dangling edge, and he hadn't wanted to, their interaction had felt complete there, but he couldn't stop himself from approaching her.
"Ashley..." He greeted her curiously, tucking his hands in to his pockets, the tip of his nose cold and shiny. He had no idea that she could potentially be his date, it didn't seem plausible at all in that moment. She seemed distracted, so he assumed she already had somebody coming to meet her. "Are you waiting for somebody?" He asked, looking around himself as if expecting to see her with a familiar dark-haired boy, whom he'd noticed her with often since the incident in the tower.

Ash jumped a little, definitely not expecting someone to talk to her. She looked to the side, surprised to see Nathaniel standing there. He hadn't ever actually given her his name, but after their incident in the owlery, she'd paid attention until she found it out. She pasted on a smile. They hadn't spoken since that day, though they were in the same year and house and had a few of the same classes. She nodded, "Hi Nathaniel." There wasn't any reason she should be rude to him. Despite their abrupt, not-so-pleasant first meeting, Ashley couldn't hold anything against him anymore. He'd saved her life. He asked if she was waiting for someone and Ashley nodded, "Yeah, I have a blind date I'm supposed to meet here." She felt a little embarrassed that she was telling him that. Nathaniel would probably think that she was desperate or something like that. He didn't know anything about her. "What about you?" she asked, trying to divert the attention from her. She glanced around them, expecting to see her date approaching, but no one else seemed to be headed in their direction. Really? It was almost time ... was her date going to be late? THOUGH THEY WERE NO LONGER ON BAD TERMS, Nate and Ashley were certainly not friends. Seeing her there was awkward, but it didn't fill him with irritation as it might have before the events that took place in the owlery. However, the last thing Nate expected was for them to be put together on a blind date. That hadn't even occurred to him when he'd seen her there, but it certainly did when she revealed why she was there.
"Uh..." He laughed harshly and shook his head. "Me, too." And then he served her a look, wondering which one of them would be the first to admit they were paired together. He figured why not and shook his head. "Looks like we're paired together." He didn't say it with any measure of enthusiasm, but he wasn't particularly displeased either. She was pretty fit, and she would definitely be fun to bicker with at the very least. He figured that it could have been worse, at least it wasn't a stiff Gryffindor.
"Don't look too excited," He said bluntly, clicking his tongue as he offered her an arm so they could walk together. He was a bit rude, but he wasn't a total cad. Plus, he already knew from experience that she was pretty clumsy. "Let's go look at some water horses," He said looking forward, though a small smirk started at the corner of his mouth. "Promise I won't push you in."

Ashley actually didn't know how to behave right now. She was a little nervous that Nate might think she was desperate, waiting here for a date and she hadn't really talked to him at all since that day when he saved her. She'd seen him in the common room and in a few classes, but apart from a few glances, the two hadn't interacted with one another at all. He admitted that he was here for a blind date too, laughing oddly and Ashley's eyes widened a little. Was ... could he be her date? She was about to ask him where his date was supposed to go when he said that they were probably paired together. She gave a nervous laugh, not sure what to think about this. She was pretty sure Nathaniel already thought she was an idiot. Hopefully he wouldn't treat her like one. "Yeah, it does doesn't it," she answered, rising to her feet. He told her to not look too excited and Ashley rolled her eyes. "I look just as excited as you do," she shot back before offering a sweet smile to him, just to be annoying. She was a little surprised that he offered his arm, but she took it all the same. She nodded when he said what they were about to do, confirming last and for all that he was supposed to be her date. "I'm actually pretty excited. I haven't ever seen any before," she admitted, hoping that maybe starting a conversation would help get past this awkwardness. She looked over at him sharply at his promise, but saw the small smile. She shrugged, smirking right back, "I'll make no promise of the kind ... so try not to be too annoying." Ash was teasing, which was why she allowed the smile. Hopefully she wouldn't offend Nathaniel, but she didn't really know him so there was no telling whether or not he'd be offended. DESPITE THE FACT THAT THEY HADN'T GOTTEN along at first, Nate had only bothered her for a reaction to begin with. She'd simply bitten and more. But, things had changed after what happened in the owlery. She didn't glare at him anymore, in fact she barely looked at him at all. The fact that they were paired now felt like a bit of a cruel joke, but he didn't complain. Not yet at least.
"I'm just..." He shrugged one shoulder, smirking a little. "Very good at hiding it." Though he was obviously lying, at least she took his arm when he offered it to her. He'd never seen Kelpies either, having spent much of his life outside of the orphanage with muggles unless he was at school or out on his own. "Me, neither." He admitted, a little embarrassed at being so uninformed, but not as badly as he might have done if she'd have seen them before.
Chuckling, Nate shook his head and gave Ashley a look from the corner of his eye. "I'm a perfect gentlemen." He retorted, sniffing as he squared his jaw and lifted his chin, patting her hand as if she were some handkerchief maiden. "Unlike some." He smirked down at her, wondering if she would actually push him in. He thought she might, if given the chance. But, maybe she'd save him too and they'd be even. "Guess it's a good thing I can swim." He made no promises about being any less annoying. He'd see how he felt once they were inside.

It was so strange to Ashley that she and Nate were on this date together. Out of everyone she'd met at Hogwarts, she hadn't expected someone like him. Probably mostly because she didn't see someone like him signing up for a blind date in the first place, but obviously he had. She snorted, lifting her free hand quickly to try and hide it. "Yeah, it's almost like you don't have to hide anything at all," she teased, unable to help herself. She didn't think he was excited at the prospect of their date together, but she also wasn't offended about that. At least she wouldn't have to worry about her date wanting to really pursue something serious. She doubted he'd have any intentions like that toward her. He seemed like he didn't want to admit that he hadn't seen Kelpies either, so Ashley acted like it wasn't a big deal. Really, it wasn't. "Well then, it's a first for both of us. That'll make it more interesting, probably," she told him. Ashley was actually quite proud of herself for making him chuckle. From what she'd seen of him previously, he was more the stoic type of person, so seeing this side of Nate was a bit enlightening. She quirked an eyebrow at his comment about being a gentleman, not saying anything as he patted her hand. When he said "unlike some," she couldn't help but let out a quiet laugh. "Well that's fine by me. I don't really have any interest in being a perfect gentleman." Ash kept her expression straight, though it took a bit of effort. She shrugged a shoulder at his comment about swimming. "Guess it is," she agreed. Ashley probably wouldn't try to push him in, but if he wasn't going to try and be less annoying she wasn't going to promise anything. Nathaniel David Forrester

LOOKING DOWN AT HER WITH A SINGLE COCKED brow, Nate stared it silently for a moment before he turned his head again. "That's what you think," He remarked, though she wasn't entirely off beat. This wouldn't have been his ideal date, but it certainly wasn't the worst case scenario either. At least, if push came to shove, he could have a little fun with it. Ashley was the type that seemed easily riled, but that wasn't his immediate plan. If anything, he'd shock her completely by being the perfect date.
"Interesting..." He echoed, smirking slightly as they walked towards the small visitors centre. "That's one way to put it." If anything, he'd get to see some water horses and they'd split without ever mentioning it again. He was fine with that. Though he'd been hoping for something a little more exciting, but Ashley wasn't his type. She seemed loved up, anyway. He'd seen her with some dark haired Puff more than once.
Pulling the centre door open, Nate pretended to hold it open for a moment before he changed his mind and hopped passed her, almost pulling the door closed on Ashley in the process. He snickered from behind the glass, pushing it open again so that she could pass him. "Almost changed my mind there," He said to her, pretending to nod his head severely. "Good thing I didn't, eh?"

The look on Nathaniel's face almost made Ashley want to start laughing. It was almost like he couldn't decide what to make of her, now that she was teasing him. Somehow, she kept her composure and he changed his expression so he looked more stoic now. She shrugged when he retorted back. "I guess I can let you prove me wrong then," Ashley's tone was light, but there was a definite challenge to her voice. Even though she knew she wasn't interested in anything romantic with Nathaniel, she did want to have fun. Maybe that would be possible. She quirked an eyebrow at him, a small smirk of her own appearing. "Is there another way you'd rather say it?" she asked. In the least, maybe this would help her know what he thought about the whole thing. She didn't want to force him into anything he didn't want, though it was kind of his fault. He did sign up for this, after all. Her jaw dropped when he jumped in front of her through the door and hesitated before holding the door for her. She closed it, shaking her head slightly and definitely smiling. She couldn't be certain, but she was almost sure that he was teasing her. Maybe trying to lighten the mood? At least, she hoped that was what he was doing. If Nathaniel seriously would rather go without her, then they definitely weren't going to have a very good time. She nodded to answer his question. "Definitely a good thing. Who knows how I would have gotten back at you otherwise," Ashley offered a sweet smile. He wouldn't know this, but she wasn't one to take other people's crap lying down. She'd shoot it right back, unless it was all in good fun, like this seemed to be. Nathaniel David Forrester

NATE LIKED THE SOUND OF THAT, PROVING HER wrong. Mainly just for the satisfaction of doing so, but that meant being nice to her. He didn't know how long he could keep that up. At the very least, he could try and refrain for saying something insulting, but the trouble was that half the time he didn't even realise he was being insulting. He only ever seemed to notice when someone became made or snippy and he had to wind back and figure out where he'd gone wrong, but who had the time?
"Ill-fated?" He teased, tapping his chin as he pretended to think about it. "Some kind of cruel joke?" This wasn't an attempt to insult her, funnily enough, but it was a risk nonetheless. He couldn't help but poke fun at her, especially as he held the door, her expression running from shocked to suspicious, settling on something that could have been mirth. Nate refused to think too hard about it, letting the door fall closed behind her as they stepped in to the venues main entrance, the desk manned by a tall man Nate highly suspected was part giant.
"Oh, yeah?" Nate retorted, shooting her a glance from the corner of his eye. "Now I kind of wish I'd followed through." And that was true, he was infinitely curious as to how she might retaliate in many different ways. She bit so easily before. And though she appeared to be joking, he fully believed she was capable of interesting vengeance. "Guess there's still time though."
The part-giant at the front desk appeared to be expecting them, a jovial smile on his face that made Nate instantly uncomfortable. He gave them two corresponding bands and ushered them down a very steep ramp to a basement 'viewing station'. On the way he explained at great, excitable length of how their date would proceed.
They'd proceed to the viewing tunnel where they would 'see the kelpies in their natural environment'. Which in itself sounded odd as Nate highly doubted such creatures would live naturally near a very wizard-made structure, but he refrained from making such comments, even though it pained him to do so. The giant left them at the mouth of the tunnel when Nate very firmly refused his offer of 'tour guide', shooting Ashley a disdainful glance. "I think we're capable of managing on our own..."

Ashley didn't know how to take Nathaniel. In this situation, he was actually behaving like a normal person. He was easy to talk to, even teasing her a bit and not in that superior way he used the night they first met one another. It was nice, but she wasn't sure if he was being sincere now or not. It was hard to judge whether or not someone was sincere when you hardly knew them. Maybe she'd be able to read him a little better by the end of their date. She rolled her eyes when he corrected her "interesting" comment. "Haha, you're so funny," she answered back, smiling just a little. Maybe his humor was just that way. She lifted her chin, wanting to tease him the same way he was teasing her, though she didn't know if he'd take it the right way or not. "Maybe the universe just wants a do-over for us," she commented with a shrug and a smirk. She didn't want anything romantic, but if things went well today maybe they could be friends. Or something better than the awkward whatever-they-were now. Nate seemed curious to see how Ashley would retaliate and she quirked an eyebrow at him. "Do you really though? I have three brothers, two of them older. I do a decent job at standing up for myself." And, unlike her oldest brother, Ash was good at biding her time to get back at him. If she needed, she could do the same tonight, though she was mostly hoping it was all in jest. She shrugged when he said there was still time. "You know how to make it happen," Ashley commented with a sweet smile. She wasn't going to start anything, but she was enjoying the banter. An extremely tall man, was he part giant or something, started leading the two around, explaining things and Ashley only half listened. She was too busy looking around herself. She'd never been somewhere like this before and it was interesting. She glanced over at Nathaniel every once in a while, but she couldn't look at him for long. He seemed annoyed with their guide, which Ashley actually found a bit amusing. Not that she would comment on it with the guy here. She almost laughed out loud when Nathaniel said they could manage on their own, turning down the tour, but she somehow schooled her expression into a neutral one. She nodded in agreement, "Yeah, we've got this. Thanks though!" She was sorely tempted to grab Nathaniel's arm then and start pulling him along, since the man seemed so excited to have people on a date here, but she didn't know how Nathaniel would respond to that, so she didn't. "Lead on, since you didn't want the amazing tour guide," Ashley teased, gesturing for Nathaniel to choose where they started with a smirk. She couldn't help it. Nathaniel David Forrester

IF NATE BELIEVED IN SOMETHING AS SILLY AS 'the Universe', he might have agreed with Ashley. But, he didn't, and so he was more inclined to believe that it was just plain old dumb luck that kept throwing the two together. He'd never been Fate's biggest fan, and he'd always looked down on those who chose to throw their weight in with it so freely. 'I make my own luck', he thought bitterly. And his distaste for her opinion showed plain on his transparent face.
"I suppose you take Divination as well," He said snootily, though it didn't hold half as much derision as it might have before they'd landed on a date together. This time, it was a mere observation. "Tea leaves and star charts." He quirked his brows at her teasingly, rolling his eyes once before he turned away from her.
For a second, Nate thought that Ashley was threatening him with her brothers. He barked a laugh, shaking his head at the sheer confidence in her tone. "Oh, I don't doubt that." He said, and he meant it too. The laughter lingering at the creases by his mouth. "But, I'd still win." Nate was all swagger now, that shadowy uncertainty fading as he grew - though he'd never admit it - comfortable in Ashley's company. Less on edge, his introspective quiet leaving him at the reception desk.
Nate led easily, the tour guide left in the dust with a sour expression on their face. At least Ashley didn't fight him on it. He didn't want to keep looking over the shoulder, listening to a factual grown that would leave him yawning and eager for home. "I get it," Nate declared, jibing back with her as a tossed a smirk over his shoulder. "You'd rather be on a date with him." Hands tucked in to his pockets, they made their way to a long glass tunnel, the water murky and green, the smell of river water and silt heavy in the air. "I can set it up, if you'd like." He offered, his generous expression so at odds with the wicked planes of his face. "Who am I to stand in the way of true love?"

Ashley couldn't help herself. She actually laughed when Nathaniel answered her comment about the universe by saying she probably took Divination. "Merlin no! I was being sarcastic, you punk," she told him, still laughing as she shook her head. She rolled her eyes when he mentioned tea leaves and whatever else. "You couldn't pay me enough to take that class. It's all a load of crap." She knew not everyone thought that, but Ashley didn't believe that the stars made her destiny. She chose what to do with her own life, thank you very much. She smiled when he laughed at her comment about being able to take care of herself. She scrunched her nose when he said that he'd still win, even if she could get back at him. "Probably," she admitted thoughtfully, "but I wouldn't make it easy for you," she promised. Joe almost always won their battles, but Ashley felt like she did a good job taking care of herself. It would probably be similar if something happened between her and Nate. Nathaniel started to talk again after the tour guide was gone, saying that he understood, that Ash wanted to be on a date with the other guy. She laughed, taken by surprise with his teasing. She really hadn't expected this sort of a conversation when she realized he was her date. "No! That's not what I-" she cut off when Nathaniel continued. Then she was pushing his shoulder playfully when he offered to set it up. "I don't need you to set up a date for me. If I'm interested, I can do that on my own!" She wasn't interested. The only person she wanted to go on a date with was Eli. At least she was having a nice time bantering with Nathaniel though. It wasn't as awkward as she thought. She made a face at him as he mentioned true love, rolling her eyes and looking around as they reached the tunnel. "How long do you think it'll be before we see something?" Ash asked curiously. She was actually looking forward to seeing the Kelpies. Nathaniel David Forrester

IT TOOK NATE A MOMENT TO REALISE ASHLEY was ribbing him in good humour. His face slackened in thought, before it broke out in a tentative, but genuine smile. He rolled his eyes and shrugged his shoulders, brushing it off in a way he wouldn't have been capable before. Nate hated being laughed at. But, he didn't think she was doing that. Though it rumbled in the pit of his stomach - uncertainty. The urge to bite. He held back, just for a second.
"Glad we can finally agree on something," He said, pursing his lips to pull his smile back at the edges. He didn't want her going ahead thinking he liked her, or something equally as foolish. He was beginning to think that she wasn't as intolerable as he'd originally anticipated. It was like acid at the back of his throat, that particular revelation. The competitive challenge in her eyes as familiar as it was enticing. If she wasn't so obviously prudish, he might have tried it on with her in the end. But, Nate wasn't in the business of being rejected often.
Holding his hands out in surrender, Nate accepted his shove with relative ease. Rocking back on his heels as he snorted at her heartily. "Alright, alright." He placated, dropping his hands and laughing, his adam's apple bobbing merrily along. "I get it, you've got dates comin' out your ears." He licked his lips, revealing a rather wicked smirk in its wake. "Not like you had to put your name in a hat to get here, eh?"
They continued walking forward, towards sloping incline with a light at the end. He kept his eyes peeled above, but he didn't know how long it'd be, so he shrugged. "Kinda wanna be outside before I see anything," He muttered, half to himself as he followed a school of shad with his eyes. They were too lazy to be avoiding anything decent, so he didn't stare for long.
"This ain't that romantic." He said, the water gloomy and green. It was an observation he hadn't intended to make as he dropped his chin again and cast Ashley a look. "But it gets points for privacy." He pressed his tongue behind his teeth, wiggling his brows at Ashley as he edged away to press himself against one of the barriers just as a great big salmon came streaking past, as if running from something terribly fast.

Despite herself, Ashley was definitely proud of the fact that she'd somehow got Nathaniel to smile. He was normally so serious and seeming-severe, but he was actually smiling now as he rolled his eyes at her. Good. At least they seemed to be understanding one another now. She nodded when he said he was glad that they finally agreed on something. "Yeah, I think it's probably good to find some common ground so we don't spend our entire date bickering," she teased sarcastically. She probably shouldn't push him more, but Ash also couldn't resist. It didn't seem like he was the kind of person who got teased often ... maybe she'd be able to get away with it. He snorted when she pushed him, giving in and saying that he understood and she was doing fine getting her own dates. Ashley rolled her eyes at his wording, but she wasn't annoyed, surprisingly. "I didn't have to put my name in. I thought it'd be a fun way to meet someone new." Ashley could meet as many people as she wanted ... she just liked trying new things. She quirked an eyebrow at him. "Did you have to put your name in to get a date?" Somehow Ash kept her face serious, though she was teasing. The corner of her lips twitched. He teased her. He could take it if she teased him back. She quirked her head to the side. "You don't like being underground? Or you just think you'll see things better once we're outside?" Ash asked curiously. She didn't really care when she saw something, though she did want to see kelpies. It would be disappointing if she didn't get to see anything. Ashley chuckled when Nate said that this wasn't romantic. "Are you disappointed?" she teased playfully. She didn't think he would be. He didn't seem to be trying to get her to warm up to him or anything. He wasn't flattering her or flirting, really. Just making fun of her, like she was him. She laughed when he mentioned that at least it was private. "Yes, no one can see us walking down the tunnel," she muttered. She meant to say more, but she paused when the salmon came past. Then, something dark and green rushed by too. "Did you see that?" she muttered, as she moved closer, trying to see better. Okay, this was definitely cool. Nathaniel David Forrester
