@addilyn 12.24.2024 The small chuckle that escaped him when Addi called the older journalists ‘jerks’ was worth it. They really were, when it came down to it. Being afraid of an intern with aspirations made them look weak and scared of the potential he had. At least that was how he chose to view it. There had yet to be any form of formal hazing, like trying to break him down and give it to him (which had happened with the aurors), so there was a plus side to it. All of the journalists were stuck in their own little worlds, only worrying about their tiny microcosms and the articles they were working on. It was sort of sad when he thought about how vile they could be over their worthless puff pieces, as if everyone was out to steal their ideas and claim them as their own. Grey had better things to do, like watching Quidditch matches for research. It was hard to come up with new information in that field, since anything interesting that could happen was usually on the pitch and in front of thousands.
With their spells cast, they waited. And waited. And eventually it sort of felt like the room was warmer than it had been at the start. It was hard to tell since they were sending the air directly up towards the device. Grey wasn’t exactly sure to what degree of dry air they would need to reach, just that they needed to make it dry. After a few moments, the device started to spin, and instead of shooting a mist of water out into the air, it sprayed it. Addi let out a noise and he couldn’t help himself from laughing. “You could stick it in the garden and it’ll water the plants without having to worry. I think that’s a win no matter how you look at it.”

At least he chuckled about her insulting the other journalists rather than trying to defend them. He was annoyed with them too, she was sure, even if Grey had a way of not showing his emotions. Or, at least she couldn't get a good read on them. He was worse than Edmund in that regard. For a moment she felt like sharing her experiences with Edmund so far, and how she was in a happy relationship, but she refrained. She hadn't ever been a big sharer with her brother, and she wasn't ready to suddenly start now. After the device sprayed the water, Grey laughed at Addilyns startled sound. She shot a glare his way, but couldn't help but laugh a little too. He suggested that it would water the plants and she shook her head, ”I'd have to point it at the favorite plant, because that's the only one it would get to.” She looked up at it, ”damn sprinkler,” she muttered. She looked back to Grey a moment of silence developing in the air for a moment. ”Thanks for helping anyway. Guess it's just not ready,” she shrugged. grey xavier slater

@addilyn 12.24.2024 If it wasn’t for the fact that the device ultimately failed in its test run and that he knew Addi wouldn’t give up working on it until she perfected it, he thought his idea to use it as a sprinkler was a pretty good one. A sort of self-automated, charmed one would completely remove the need to have a charmed watering can or hose. He was sure there was a way to even get it so that the charm they had used on the air would constantly function within the device, in a way that would allow it to know when the plants needed to be watered. But that was what his brain told him, and he wasn’t an inventor in the slightest. If that was possible, Addi would have probably already ran with it and started working on a design that would fit for a tool of that sort.
“You’ll get it eventually, I’m sure,” he added as she pointed out that it wasn’t ready. “For its maiden voyage, it did pretty well if you think about it. Sure, it’s supposed to create moisture in the air and not shoot water out, but it still made something instead of exploding.” To the untrained eye, it looked like it was a step in the right direction. If he was unaware of what she was actually trying to achieve here and told him it was a garden sprinkler, he would have been one-hundred percent convinced that it was. There was merit to that. “Got anything else? You have me for the next two days, and if it’s as interesting as this thing,” he pointed up at the device, “Then I don’t mind helping out. Keeps me away from dealing with them.”

He said she'd get it eventually, and she furrowed her brow a little. She knew she would, it was just... interesting to have him encouraging her. He said that it did pretty well, glad that it made the water instead of just exploding. It was a pretty good point, certainly. "I guess that's true. Not a complete failure," being a perfectionist didn't necessarily make her life easy in these situations, so it was nice to have another person pointing out the positives. "It's all in the journey, right?" which was cliche, but she did believe it to be true. She liked the inventing part, even if it did mean taking something apart to fix it again and putting it back together. She loved making things work, so it wasn't the worst thing that it needed more work. He asked if she had anything else and that she had him for the next two days for interesting things. She looked up at it as she pointed and then looked back to him. "Couldn't your apartment keep you from them too? Not that," she paused, "not that I'm saying you should bail. I'm sure I have something else," she continued quickly. "Is there something in particular you'd like to see? I mean, we could start something new," she suggested. grey xavier slater

@addilyn 12.24.2024 “Exactly!” Grey pointed at his sister as she said that the trial and error process of the invention was all part of ‘the journey’. That was certainly one way to put it. He didn’t think inventors labeled their tests as scientific (magic?) journeys, but Addi saw it that way so it had to be true. Grey didn’t have the capabilities of thinking in that manner – his magic was more linear and was rarely used. He liked doing everything the normal way. Except cleaning. The simplicity of waving his wand to clean an entire bathroom or to fold all of his clothes was not something he would ever get rid of. Poor muggles…they had to do everything by hand. The only muggle thing he liked doing was writing, just like they did. Too many of his new coworkers used magicked pens or quills to quickly jot down their notes or thoughts while in the field, and he found that so unnecessary. They were journalists! Nothing beat writing down everything in person and feeling the scratch of the pen on paper. He assumed it was the same for Addi with her inventions, when they worked, that is.
He let out a long, drawn-out exasperated sigh when Addi asked why he didn’t just leave if he didn’t want to deal with their parents anymore. That was a complicated question, because he desperately wanted to but didn’t feel like burning those bridges then and there. He was already in hot water from changing careers and defying the dreams they had established for him, and outright disappearing on Christmas Eve seemed sort of like an asshole move. Sure, he could come with a million and one excuses to escape, but that was too much effort. “I don’t think it would be fair to you or Claire. The blowback from me doing that would directly affect both of you…” His relationship with Claire was strained enough as it was, though he had hoped that being graduated and considered an adult would bring them somewhat closer than they had been while in school. It was hard to tell though, with their parents whispering things into her ear all the time. “How do you even come up with things in the first place? Like, do you notice some sort of inconvenience in the dorms or life, and decide that there has to be an easy way to fix it? It’s honestly fascinating now that I’ve seen a bit of the process.”
