Kinsey walked around the festival, looking for Dan. They'd talked in their letters about meeting up at the festival so they could really talk with one another. She was actually looking forward to it. Though she'd only met Dan in person once, they'd been writing for a while now and she appreciated his insight. Even more than that, he had a special ability too. More than most other people, he understood her and she appreciated that. She was hoping to maybe be able to return the favor today somehow. He'd told her in his letters that he thought his ability was speaking to him and she was a little worried about that. Was that even possible? She'd tried to research since he brought it up, but she hadn't found anything suggesting that it had ever happened before. Then again, she'd never heard of anyone with her abilities either, so she couldn't rule it out entirely.
She saw him right where he was supposed to be, outside the Three Broomsticks and Kinsey smiled as she walked over and approached him. "Hi Dan!" she greeted cheerfully with a wave. They were friends, so she briefly considered a hug, but neither of them were big on physical contact so she figured the wave should be good enough. "Do you want to start off getting a drink inside?" Kinsey asked, gesturing to the building.

Not that Dan particularly loved festivals but it did seem like the best place to meet his friend Kinsey. He was outside the Broomsticks again, since it was the landmark he knew the best there, and looking through the crowds for her, sometimes lifting up onto his toes. Finally she approached and he grinned. Her mood was a lot more positive than he thought it would be... even with some underlying other things. He also leaned forward slightly, just barely, as if he'd hug her but just nodded his hand. "I think I'd prefer the open air, actually," he admitted. "Somehow the sky seems to take people's emotions upward," he suggested, pointing up. "But there's a drink cart or two around?" he nodded his head to the side, suggesting that he'd start walking - then leaned into his head tilt and led the way.

Kinsey definitely considered it a good sign when she saw Dan smiling widely as she approached. He seemed glad to see her and she was relieved. Though she felt as though the two drew closer through their letters, an irrational part of her was worried that once they were together again in person things would be different. Maybe he'd realize that he didn't want to be such good friends with her or that she annoyed him more than he expected. She was a little surprised when he said that he'd rather be outside, but she didn't mind. "That sounds good." She smiled as he mentioned how people's emotions were generally happier outside. She couldn't deny that, Kinsey loved being outside. "Yeah, I think I saw a few over there while I was walking around." She pointed to the left and joined him as he started walking. "So how have you been since our last letter?" Kinsey looked over at him curiously. Part of her hoped he hadn't had another experience with his emotions, but at the same time she was fascinated. Did he really believe his ability was talking to him?

She agreed that staying outside sounded good and agreed to the drink. She asked how he had been since their last letter and he shrugged, his shoulders staying up by his ears for an extra amount of time. "I'm fine, I guess. Had a nice day here with Irina yesterday," he started. "Nothing... crazy has happened since what I told you," he had lowered his voice to a whisper, leading her to one of the carts. "Butterbeer?" he didn't drink alcohol often, if ever. He preferred to stay inhibited thank you very much. Too much would be at risk in relation to his sanity if he was too drunk to handle things.
"And how are you? I'm sorry I monopolized our conversation... just been..." she shuddered, "anyway, I'm glad we met up today."

Dan didn't seem upset right now, which Kinsey considered good. Maybe they could get to talking, and help one another a bit. She wasn't sure if she wanted to tell him about the things that happened with Riley recently, but it was nice to have someone to talk to about it if she wanted, especially since she and Toby weren't talking anymore. "I'm glad you've had a nice time with her," Kinsey answered honestly, glancing around until he started talking again. Once she realized what he was talking about, she stared at him closely. She nodded, following him as he led her. She nodded, "Yeah, butterbeer sounds good," she answered. "Are you going to tell me more about that?" she asked.
He was already asking about her. Kinsey shrugged, smiling at her friend. "You don't need to apologize. Nothing of real note is going on with me." All the purebloods excited for Priscilla glared whenever they saw her. They all hated her for the scene she and Riley made when they kissed the other week. Dan didn't need to know about that though. He had enough difficult things going on. Her smile became a little more forced, "I can't wait to graduate and get away from Hogwarts," she whispered, thinking of how hard school was right now. "I'm glad to see you as well though. It's nice to see a friend." Yes, Riley was a friend now, but it was different with him. Dan was a special kind of friend, in the fact that he could understand her in a way no one else could

She said she was glad he had a nice time with Irina and he smiled, even if it was a little half heatred. She agree to a butterbeer and he ordered one for her, handing it to her when it was ready. She asked if he'd tell her any more about what had happened to him and his brow furrowed, "I mean... I can try. Once I have some warmth in me," he suggested, raising his butterbeer to her.
She said ther was no need to apologize and nothing was really going on with her. But her emotions told him otherwise. There was goings on within Kinsey, that much was certain, but he wasn't one to pry if someone didn't want to talk. He hated when people did that with him so he wasn't going to do anything like that to his friend. She said she couldn't wait to graduate - in a whisper. He bent down a little, trying to get a glimpse into her eyes.
She said she was glad to see him too, and he nodded once. "You need more of those, I think. Granted, I don't really care to have that many," he shrugged. If he was anyone else, he could have taken her hand or her arm then, but he didn't, "I hate seeing you like this. I mean, if I could do anything to the people hurting you..."

Kinsey smiled and nodded when Dan suggested they get warm before they started talking about the hard stuff. "Sounds good to me. It's so cold outside." Kinsey didn't particularly dislike the cold or anything, but she definitely liked feeling warm more. She held the mug of butterbeer with both hands, enjoying the warmth even before she drank some.
Dan moved when she said that she couldn't wait to graduate and she realized he was trying to look into her eyes. Kinsey offered a small smile, "I'm not good at hiding my feelings, am I?" She already knew the answer to that. The only thing was, she didn't want to be a burden to Dan. He already had so much he was going through. She shrugged, "I'm okay, I think. Making it through, but it'll be easier after graduation." After she didn't have to see Riley and Priscilla, or Toby with Anastasia, or Dom. Once she could find a way to bury herself in work or studies or learning. Maybe that wasn't the healthy way to react, but it's all she wanted right now.
She shrugged when Dan said that he thought she needed more friends, glancing away. "My friends have a tendency to leave me, sooner or later." Even Toby, who'd always been there for her. They were in the middle of a big argument now and it was her fault. She pushed him away, just like everyone else. Kinsey forced a smile at Dan, "It's not your fault ... and I don't know if you could do anything anyway ... I just have to make it through." Which was much easier said than done.

She agreed that it was cold and he drank more of his butterbeer too, enjoying the warmth of his own cup as well. "I generally like the cold, but sometimes," he shuddered, just implying that sometimes the cold was just too cold. This was stil nothing compared to Bulgaria, though, but he didn't think talking about that was really worth the time.
She said she wasn't god at hiding her feelings and he smirked, "can't hide them from me anyway," he explained quickly before she moved on to say she was okay, making it through, talking about graduation. He nodded, "I find adulthood to be easier. I get to decide when I'm around others and when I'm not and it's way easier to avoid people you don't want to see," he agreed. He wanted to tell her to enjoy school while she could but... why would he if he didn't really do that himself?
She said her friends had a tendancy to leave her, looking away from him. He frowned, taking another sip of his drink within that frown. She smiled back at him, forcibly, and said that she just had to make it through. "I don't think you JUST have to endure it. You want to move forward, progress, right?" he suggested.

Kinsey nodded as she took another sip. “I don’t mind the cold as much as some, but that doesn’t mean I don’t get warm when I have the chance,” she answered. Being cold was just a part of life at Hogwarts, and Kinsey accepted it as such. She felt like it would be silly to do otherwise.
She rolled her eyes when she noticed his smirk and he said she couldn’t hide her feelings from him. Well, that was true. “Fine fine, you know all," she answered in a teasing tone. “You happy now?” Really, it was nice to have someone she didn’t have to hide from, though part of her felt bad for dumping on him. At least they had a bit of a connection from the fact that they both had abilities most people wouldn’t be able to understand. Hopefully he didn’t get too annoyed by her emotions.
Kinsey listened carefully as he explained that it was much easier to be an adult and why. She smirked, “Well, I mean it might not be so easy for you, being a super-famous Quidditch star and all.” Kinsey had no such intentions. She wanted to get a job at a library or museum (hopefully a museum). She would like to study magical artefacts and not have to interact with people unless she wanted to, kind of like what he was saying. “That does sound a lot easier to deal with,” she agreed after thinking about it for a few moments.
Dan questioned whether or not it was a question of enduring school or moving forward and progressing. Ugh, why did he have to ask all the hard questions? Kinsey shrugged for a second, trying to think of a way to explain herself without getting too emotional. “I … do want to move forward and progress, but I feel like I’m taking one step forward and three steps backwards. I’m gaining more control over my ability, yes, but more and more I’m losing the people around me. Not only Dustin and Diana, but Riley and,” she bit her lip for a second, “and the other day Toby and I had a big fight. I think I subconsciously drive people away.” Kinsey shrugged, trying to make the deep subject a little lighter, before asking, “How much can you progress if you’re always on your own?” She did well at school, was actually a very adept witch, but would that help her any if she couldn’t find people who didn’t mind being around her?

She called him a 'know all' and he shook his head, "thank gods I'm not one of those," he suggested. "I like the mystery," he laughed. He didn't get a lot of that in his life so he really did like when he was able to do something and not know hat was going to happen next. Emotion reading took away a lot of the surprise.
She said that it was easy for him to be an adult because of his being famous and he rolled his eyes. "I'm not sure i love it, but it actually does help me get privacy more than I thought. I'm always offered 'the private booth at the back' and stuff," he explained. She agreed that it did sound easier to deal with, which made him smile.
She said she wanted to move forward, as he spoke about Riley and school. He understood what she meant about still going backward. "Why do you-" he started, but he stopped when his question was answered. She thinks she drives them away subconsciously. "I do it, but consciously," he chimed in. His brow furrowed, "I'm sorry about Toby. But you'll both come around if you're really friends," he'd had his fair share of fights. She asked how he could progress on his own and he waited a moment before speaking. "You don't, but you also don't have to rely on friends. I mean, it's better to rely on professionals rather than friends..." was that bad advice?

Kinsey laughed when Dan argued that he liked having mystery in his life and not knowing everything, but she didn't argue. He probably knew a lot more than he wanted from being able to read people's emotions, so not knowing everything was probably a relief for him.
He explained that being famous helped him get privacy and Kinsey quirked her head to the side in surprise. He didn't wait for her to ask for clarification, already explaining that he got offered private booths and such. Huh, she'd never thought about that before. "And when you're in public and have all your fans surrounding you, begging for autographs?" she asked with a teasing smile, unable to help herself. She was impressed by his willing to have such a high-profile job. Kinsey wasn't sure she could be strong enough to do something like that.
She was nervous to explain a little more about herself, explaining about how she thought she drove people away. Her eyes widened when he said that he did it on purpose. "You want to drive people away? Because it's easier?" she asked, wanting to understand him better. He explained that he was sorry about Toby and she nodded, appreciating his support. "I hope so ... I guess I'm nervous because I don't know how to not tell him too much, I guess. I have a hard time figuring out where the line is of what people want to know and what they don't want to know." Then Dan was telling her that talking to professionals was better than talking to friends and she nodded slowly, "I could try that ... " She didn't want to at school though. She knew the school had a counselor, but she didn't feel comfortable there. She wanted to find someone she could talk to.

"Well, I do get fans sometimes, but I don't think I have that many. I'm kind of known as the grumpy one on the team," he explained, laughing a little. "Finn has a big following, which isn't surprising. He's like born to be a celebrity," he explained, but then realized that she may have not been actually wanting an answer to the question. He bit his lip, shaking his head a little, "anyway, yeah. No, it's not a huge deal. Usually," he added again.
He nodded at her words, "yeah. I decide who isn't good to have around me and I remove them from my life. It's actually a good way to avoid getting overloaded. I'm sure once you graduate a great deal of people who bother your ability will be out of the picture and you'll see." She said she had a hard time knowing where the line was with friends, and that she could try talking to a professional. "The best thing to do is ask. If they want to know more, they'll tell you," he explained. "You can't just expect them to know what you want. But that's why a professional is better, you're meant to tell them anything you want."

Kinsey smiled as Dan explained a little more, saying that he did have fans but that he came off as the grumpy one. "I wonder why," she teased, though she thought she understood. If he came off as grumpy, then maybe people would leave him alone a bit and he wouldn't have to deal with as many emotions. If it worked for him, then that was cool. She nodded when he explained how Finn had lots of fans, but it wasn't really surprising. Made sense. From what she'd seen about the guy in the papers, he didn't mind talking to people and being social. "Well I'm glad it's not normally too hard for you then," she answered, really meaning it.
What Dan said definitely made sense and Kinsey found herself nodding along thoughtfully. "That does sound like it will be easier to deal with, once I'm out of school and can choose who I'm around for the most part." She smiled, "I just have to make it through the next six months. I can do this." She was joking around a little, making light of how hard it sometimes was, but she was being honest at the same time. Kinsey wanted to have a positive attitude about the future, even if it wasn't always easy. His next suggestion was a good one too. "Good idea. I'll definitely remember to ask them then." She didn't want to overload Toby (or anyone really) with her problems. Asking them if they wanted to know, or letting them ask her, was a good sign of that, wasn't it. Once she got out of school she'd think about seeking out a professional. She didn't want to while in school. She already had a lot to deal with without adding more.

She was teasing him! Saying she wondered why he was the grumpy one of the team. She said she was glad it wasn't too hard for him and he nodded, offering a little shrug. ”Eh, yeah, me too. I'm not sure if I'll keep doing it, though,” his eyes widened a little. That was the first time he had mentioned that out loud to anyone. He cleared his throat, ”no matter, I'll decide what I'm doing when I do it,” he added, hoping that was enough that she wouldn't press. But, he'd understand if she did.
She agreed that it would be easier to deal with her ability once she was out of school. ”Six months isn't too long. You've got it,” he suggested with a firm nod of approval at her conviction. He picked up on her joking, of course, but chose to be encouraging instead. She said she'd remember to actually ask her friends how much they wanted to hear, but he wasn't sure if he believed her. ”It's like that with anyone. Special magical issues or not,” he explained. ”If you want to talk to someone – even tell them about a funny story you had in class – you still should ask them how much they want to hear. It's not a perfect science, but people often give too much information or not enough... which could be avoided with communication.”

Kinsey felt more than surprised when Dan told her that he wasn't sure if he was going to "keep doing it". Playing Quidditch? Was that what he was talking about? The curiosity raged through Kinsey, but it wasn't hard for her to guess that Dan didn't want to talk about it. He looked surprised that he'd mentioned it, then added that he'd decide what he did when he did it. She smiled and shrugged a little. "Well, if you're still playing once I graduate, could I get some tickets to a game?" Kinsey wasn't sure if that was an okay thing to ask, but she hadn't gone to any games (other than school ones, of course) since Dustin ran off and she missed it. At the moment, she definitely couldn't afford to buy any. She just didn't have that kind of money.
At least Dan agreed that she could handle it for six months. If he didn't think that would be too much for her, maybe he was right. He seemed to want to elaborate more on asking people what they wanted to hear and Kinsey listened carefully. She didn't want to be a burden to the people she cared about, so she understood why he was focusing on this. "That ... makes sense. I guess if we all knew how to communicate better it would solve a lot of problems," Kinsey answered thoughtfully. Maybe communication would have been able to help her and Dustin's situation before it all went downhill. "I'll remember that," Kinsey promised, making a mental note to really try it. Dan's idea definitely sounded beneficial, and she didn't want to annoy anyone.
