Kinsey was actually excited about today. Christmas was two days ago and she'd really enjoyed her day with Riley. Actually, she enjoyed the entire break with Riley so far. It was everything she hoped it would be. Of course, they hadn't kissed or anything since last term, but that wasn't what she wanted. Kinsey just wanted to make some good memories that she could look back on when everything went bad.
Even so, about a week ago or so she got an owl from Joe, asking if she wanted to do something at the winter festival after Christmas but before New Years. Today just happened to work out perfectly and Kinsey found herself more excited than she expected. It was interesting that she'd missed Joe so much. She really thought of him as a good friend, someone she could trust. With Toby mad at her still, she was glad that someone other than Riley wanted to do things with her.
So here she was, around nine in the morning, standing by the entrance to Hogsmeade, rubbing her hands together in the chill morning air. Joe was a pretty prompt person, wasn't he? He should be here any minute. Then maybe they could go for a drink or something before exploring the village. Or get a drink at one of the food stands and wander the village while they drank something warm. Kinsey would be perfectly content with that. She turned around for a second, glancing into the village where a few people were milling about. It wasn't really busy this early. Probably because it was so cold.

Joe was still trying to get used to this time zone thing. He agreed to meeting with Kinsey at 9am, not thinking about what time it would be for him in New York. It was around 4AM back home. Since moving to Scotland to continue his wizarding education across the pond, his sleeping schedule was all messed up anyways, he was just happy to be able to see Kinsey. Being at home had been really nice.
The wizarding village was decorated in its winter glory. As Joe made his way toward the meeting spot, he saw Kinsey already standing there, looking cold. Snow crunched under his feet as he made his way toward the brunette, shoving his hands into his coat pockets. "Hello Sugar." Joe greeted, more to be a pest. He loved how awkward the Ravenclaw got when he called her stupid names. Joe pulled her in for a hug, offering her a warm squeeze before releasing her, "Hope you haven't been waiting long. It's nice to see you." he told her while pulling away. "How are you doing?" Joe asked her, genuinely curious. He knew that she stayed back at school, which must have been incredibly boring.

Kinsey was starting to think that maybe arriving early to things wasn't such a good idea. She was definitely looking forward to seeing Joe, but the air was frigid. At least, that's how it felt to her. She shivered, hugging her coat closer as she waited for the Slytherin to arrive. Kinsey wasn't even looking around anymore.
Then she heard Joe's voice. She jumped and turned to face him, a smile spreading across her face, along with the telltale blush. She was always blushing around Joe. She rolled her eyes, "Are you ever going to stop calling me strange nicknames?" Kinsey muttered, glancing away from him and hoping that he thought her blush was just a result of the cold. As if. Joe knew her better than that. He pulled her close for a hug and Kinsey hugged him back. He was so warm. She sighed the slightest bit, composing herself once more when he pulled away. Kinsey shrugged, "Not too long. It's nice to see you too." Why did this feel so awkward? The two were good friends. They spent a lot of time together, but Kinsey was still blushing at her attention.
"I'm fine," she said, starting to walk. She was making her way to the Three Broomsticks, but she didn't come out and say that. "It's kind of nice to be able to relax and not have to worry about school or anything, you know." Kinsey glanced up at him. "How about your holidays? Have you done anything fun?" She knew he had a party or something coming up, she'd gotten the invite but Kinsey wouldn't be able to go since she was staying at school for the holidays.

Joe pulled Kinsey in for the embrace, chuckling when she asked him if he'd ever stop calling her names. "Probably not." he told her honestly, unphased by her attitude toward the nicknames. They were fitting to him. Sometimes she was so cute and awkward. Luckily, that kind of stuff didn't bother Joe, if anything it fueled the behavior. "I'm conditioning you, you should be thanking me." he told her with a laugh, pulling away from the hug, although he liked the feeling of holding Kinsey.
As they started to walk in whatever direction she was leading them in, he listened as she shared about her holiday at the school. It sounded standard. Joe shrugged when she asked about his holiday back home. "It has been good. I have been spending a lot of time at home and helping my mom and dad with preparing the house for our upcoming New Years Eve party." he told her. It was nice to spend the time at his families mansion and walking the streets of New York city that time of the year. "You got an invite, but you can't bust out of the school for the night, huh?" he asked her with a nudge, already sure he knew the answer.
The Slytherin turned toward the girl, noticing how cold she looked now the more he was talking with her. His green eyes widened, and he took on that tone where he was trying to mess around with her, "Your nose is all pink. Do you need me to warm you up?" he questioned her flirtatiously, already knowing that it would make her awkward.

Joe's answer was hardly a surprise. Of course he wasn't going to stop calling her nicknames. He took an inordinate amount of pleasure from embarrassing her, and she wasn't quite sure why. Sure, she knew he liked her. He told her as much when he kissed her under the mistletoe, but it also seemed like half the time he was just trying to get under her skin or embarrass her. Kinsey was still trying to figure him out. She laughed when he said he was conditioning her. "Conditioning me? Whatever. I'm pretty sure that once a nickname doesn't embarrass me anymore, you'll just find a new one." Not that Kinsey thought she'd ever get used to it. Joe calling her things like "sugar" and "kitten" felt surreal. She still wasn't entirely sure it was really happening.
It sounded like so far Joe had a pretty enjoyable break and Kinsey was glad for that. He definitely sounded happy to be at home with his family and she was happy for that. She smiled and nodded, shrugging when he commented that she wouldn't be able to come to the New Year's Party. "No, sorry. I'm stuck at Hogwarts." Kinsey paused a moment before continuing, "but ... I don't know I'd come even if I could. I don't think I'd be able to fit in at a fancy party like that, you know? And I'm sure you'd have lots of better things to do than hang around me the whole time." Kinsey wasn't trying to play herself down or anything, but she'd seen Joe around other people. He was much more social than she was and definitely enjoyed flirting with lots of people. Surely he wouldn't want to be stuck talking to just her.
She noticed Joe looking over her and glanced back at him, offering a hesitant smile. Why was he staring at her? Her eyes widened when he mentioned her nose and then asked if he wanted him to help warm her up. A blush quickly spread across her face and she ducked her head. "H-how would you do that?" she asked, expecting some kind of flirtatious remark, but at the same time having no idea what he would say. "Unless you're just saying you'll buy me a drink at the Three Broomsticks." Kinsey was 99% certain that wasn't the case, but she still said it hopefully while trying to prepare herself for whatever teasing was about to come.

Joe nodded, agreeing that he would probably find other names that triggered her awkwardness. He didn't say anything though, Joe nodded to agree and let out a laugh. Kinsey was already making an awkward excuse at why she wouldn't be attending his party if she could. "Dang. Too cool for a Fontaine party. I see how it is." he teased with an eye roll, shaking his head back and forth in disagreement. "If you came, I'd give you all of the attention... But you already said you wouldn't go, even if you could. Ouch!" Joe cupped over his heart, taking offense. Honestly, it probably was better that she wasn't going because Dominique Weasley was his date, he was looking forward to having alone time with her.
When Kinsey quipped back at his flirtatious comment, he snorted with a grin; taken off guard by her reaction time this time around. "Ohh, lets go inside and see..." he challenged playfully, wrapping an around the back of her shoulders to pull her into him, more as a side hug to assure her that he was teasing her again. Joe reached for the door of the Three Broomsticks and gestured for her to walk in first.

Kinsey rolled her eyes when Joe teased her about being too cool for a Fontaine party. Like that was even half of the problem. Even if she went home for the break and could go, the likelihood of running into Priscilla or Dom was something she didn’t want to deal with. Despite Joe’s reassurances that he would give her all the attention, she wasn’t quite sure if she believed him. Well, it actually wasn’t a matter of believing him. She knew he would give her some attention, but he was handsome and the party was at his house. He’d probably have the attention of most of the girl’s there and Kinsey didn’t really want to pretend to be having a good time on her own. If she had someone to go with that would be fun, maybe it would work, but she didn’t. She didn’t even have Toby anymore. She shook her head slightly, not wanting to think of her best friend and their recent fight. “I’m not too cool,” she answered after a long pause. “Your party is too cool for me.” Kinsey smiled, hoping she hadn’t really offended Joe. He was one of the nicest people to her this year and she didn’t want him to think she didn’t appreciate his kindness. “Maybe next time Joe,” she added, surprised to realize that she actually meant it. The idea of going with him to a party didn’t actually sound so bad. She trusted Joseph Fontaine. Kinsey blushed more (of course she did) when Joe snorted and wrapped an arm around her shoulders for a quick hug, telling her that they’d have to go inside and see. She knew he was teasing. She could sense it in his intentions, but she still couldn’t help her own reaction. “Okay,” she answered quietly, even though she knew she didn’t have to say anything. Despite all appearances, she was actually very excited for her day with Joe. If nothing else, she knew he would make sure she had a good time and that he’d likely be able to distract her from all her worries, which Kinsey definitely considered a good thing. --- the end --- @joseph
