Walking out to the Black Lake, Liam hardly noticed the snow he was trudging through. He'd just gone to another meal where Ethan and Tamara were all over one another. He hated it. Despite the fact that he was dating Penny now and actually really enjoyed spending his time with her, it still didn't take away the pain of seeing his best friend with the girl he'd always liked. At least the chill air might be able to take his mind off of things.
He moved to stand underneath one of the trees, where the snow wasn't as deep, and leaned against it as he stared across the water. He couldn't decide if he was making a good choice, still dating Penny when he was admittedly still head over heals for Tamara. He had fun with Penny and definitely enjoyed being around her. She was accepting and sweet and was easy to talk to. She would also fill the silence when he wasn't in the mood to talk or didn't know what to say. He didn't want to break up with her just so he could pine after Tia's sister. That was just stupid. Then again, lately stupid was how he was feeling. He hated drama, and now he was wrapped up in his own. Ridiculous. Like usual, Liam quickly got wrapped up in his own thoughts, paying attention to little else as he stared across the Black Lake.

IT WASN'T TYPICAL FOR TIA TO FEEL THE NEED TO go looking for Liam. They're friendship was odd in the way that they spent a lot of time together, but it was always regimented. Studying, arranging to meet at Hogsmeade. They weren't the type that just 'ran in to each other'. Or, rather, Tia liked the control of scheduled fun. Plus, the idea of running in to him with her sister or Ethan around made her want to claw out her own eyes. But, she went looking for Liam on this particular day.
She hadn't meant to lie to Edrik, he'd made a mistake and she'd inadvertently ran with it. Now, she was in an even bigger pickle. He'd arranged to meet with her - thinking she was Tamara - and she had agreed. Her sister was in love with Ethan, her best friend was in love with her sister. And now she'd set up a date for herself, as her sister, with a boy who fancied her sister. Most of the time, Tia would keep such turmoil to herself, but this went beyond the boat.
Finding Liam by the Black Lake, Tia was almost frantic as she jogged to catch up to him. "Liam!" She practically yelled, sidling up at his side, a little breathless and pink in the face. Though, standing in front of him, she finally hesitated, unsure of how to proceed. "Uh... hi." She said, looking down at her feet and rubbing at her chilly cheeks as she reeled in that panic and let it boil in her belly instead of vomiting it out right away. "How- how's Penny?" She asked shakily, looking out at the lake so that he didn't look at her face too much.

Liam jumped, definitely spooked when he heard someone shouting his name. He turned around, eyes widening as he searched for the person, but then he saw Tia. Liam allowed a smile to cover his face, though he was a little surprised she was shouting his name and running after him. Normally when they wanted to talk with one another, they simply found the other in the library or common room.
The next thing he knew, she was standing in front of hi, giving an awkward greeting. Liam couldn't help but chuckle. If this were anyone else he would feel very uncomfortable, but it wasn't. This was Tia and out of all the people here at Hogwarts, other than his best friend Ethan of course, he felt the most comfortable with her. "Hey Tia. What has you running after me on the grounds?" he teased with a small smirk. She would understand his meaning.
She wasn't looking at him, glancing at the lake as she asked about Penny. Was that really why she chased after him? Liam shrugged, "She's doing well. She's very nice and easy to talk to. I like being around her," he told Tia. He didn't need to add that he was still crazy about her sister. He was trying to pretend that wasn't true, almost like pretending it would make it so. "You did well, setting the two of us up," he complimented, looking over at Tia curiously. What was going on with her?

CROSSING HER ARMS DEFENSIVELY, TIA TRIED TO act dumb as she stood beside Liam. He'd caught on to her panic quickly, which shouldn't have surprised her, she never ran after him. But, she still disliked how quickly he mentioned it, her nose wrinkling as she forced herself to scoff, "I did not run after you." Turning her face away, she pretended as if that were true. Despite the fact that she was still red in the face and breathless.
"Good," She said, nodding her head as she turned back around to face him. This time, she hoped her face was a little blander. Thinner her lips and lowering her brow. The problem was, Tia didn't know how she actually looked when she was relaxed, so it was hard to replicate. "I like her, too, she's nice." With any luck he would be over Tamara in no time. She hoped this would soften what she was so eager to tell him. He had a conflict of interest, of sorts. Edrik liked Tamara, and so did he.
Rolling her eyes dramatically, Tia tutted and shrugged her shoulders stiffly. "I know that," She said pridefully. Penny was so nice that she often blended in to the backdrop. One had to look closer to see her merits, or so Tia thought. She felt better knowing that Liam was starting to. "And she likes you back." Gesturing with one hand, she added bluntly, "Which is an improvement from your last crush." This might have been a little harsh, but Tia was so wrapped up in her need for a distraction and someone to confide in that her social awareness was dipping rapidly.

Liam lifted an eyebrow at his best friend as she denied that she'd run after her. He wasn't surprised, since Tia didn't like to admit to things like that, but she normally wasn't so evasive like that with Liam. They kind of had an understanding with one another. He rolled his eyes. "Whatever you say." Liam wouldn't argue the fact, but his comment would let her know that he saw through her.
Tia confirmed that she liked Penny and Liam nodded. He wasn't really sure what to say to that, because it seemed like the topic was closed. Then again, maybe Tia wanted him to start talking about what he liked about Penny. Liam wasn't going to do that. He nodded again when Tia said Penny was nice. "She is," he answered softly, feeling like he needed to say something back but not knowing exactly what to say.
She continued on, talking about how Penny liked him, which was better than what he could say. Tia wasn't wrong, but Liam still flinched a little as the words registered. He knew she was blunt, that was something he normally appreciated about her, but at the moment maybe not so much, especially since his "last" crush was still his real crush. He wasn't about to tell Tia that though. "So why were you so excited to see me?" he asked, the corners of his lips curving up into a smile.

TIA WAS DEFLECTING IN SPECTACULAR FASHION, but that was quite like her. She was pushing all of her panic and uncertainty on to Liam, her closest and most reliable friend. After she'd fooled Edrik and the reality of what she had agreed to set in, Tia thought of only one person to vent to. Liam was good at keeping secrets - he'd kept his burgeoning love for her sister pretty quiet. From Tamara and his best friend Ethan, even her at one point. Tia felt sure that he could help her process what she had done. And, most pressingly, figure out a way for her to put the whole mess to bed.
"I-" She was midway through a scoff before she stopped. Her first instinct to jest back with him, to tell him she'd never been particularly excited to see him, but it all died on her tongue. Her face went slack for a moment and she sighed wearily, reaching up to palm her face with a shake of her head. "I did something bad." She admitted through her hand, words muffled by her palm as she pressed it tight against her face. "Like... really bad." Squeezing her eyes shut she dropped her hand and dared to look at Liam, her face caught in a grimace.

Something wasn't quite right with Tia. Liam wasn't sure what it was, or even if he was just imagining it. Maybe Tia was just nervous about one of her classes or something, though that really wasn't like her at all. She started to talk, but then cut herself off, further proving to him that something was definitely wrong. She sighed and put her palm on her face, admitting that she did something bad. What? What in the world could Tia do that would make her as upset and worried as she seemed right now? Liam stared at her, his mouth hanging open as he tried to figure it out. "I'm sure it's okay," he said, reaching over to pat her back awkwardly. Why was he so bad at this? "What happened? I mean, what did you do?" Liam wanted to reassure her, but maybe he should listen to her first.

RECEIVING AN AWKWARD PAT TO HER BACK, TIA felt like she was crawling out of her own skin. She'd sought out Liam because he was unflinchingly honest, and her friend to boot. If she had truly done something reprehensible, he would tell her. But, in a way, she already knew she'd done something wrong. Tia just needed to know how wrong. And if she should go ahead and meet the Krum boy. Or, worst case scenario, run away and never come back.
"You don't understand," She told her friend, shirking away from his stiff, but reassuring touch. Tia felt sure she didn't deserve it. "It's bad..." Her eyes owl wide and blood shot. But, she still didn't rush to explain to him. Making a show of curling her frizzy hair around both ears and scrubbing at her cheeks. Eventually, when she could bear to speak again, she turned her face away. Unable to look him in the eye.
"How do you feel about identity fraud?" She squinted and then shifted her gaze to watch Liam back beside her in her peripheral. It was true that she'd stolen her sister's identity, but really Edrik was the one who had assumed. "Basically..." She said, drawing in a deep breath. "A boy was pestering me, acting like he knew me and I was so flustered-" A breath hiccuped in her throat before she said in a single rush, words morphing together. "IsaidI'dgoonadatebuthethinksI'mTam." Tia slapped both of her hands over her face and gave a very long, very panicked groan. And then she smacked her head three times for good measure. "Idiot!" Smack. "Idiot!" Smack. "Idiot!" Smack.

Tia insisted that he didn't understand and Liam hesitated. "Then tell me," he told her. It wasn't like Tia to beat around the bush, which was one of the reasons that the two of them got along so well. They both were quite blunt and to the point. They connected in that way, understanding one another pretty easily most of the time. Today she was being weird. She wouldn't even look at him or finish her sentences.
His eyebrows furrowed at her question. "Identity fraud? Is someone stealing your identity? Or they pretended to be someone they're not?" If someone hurt her by doing that, Liam would definitely find some way to make them regret it. He didn't like the thought of someone doing anything that would hurt his best friend. She started talking slowly, explaining about some boy talking to her and she was flustered and then she said a whole bunch of words together. It took a second for the words to register and when they did his jaw dropped. "He thinks you're Tamara?" This guy must be oblivious. The two sisters weren't very similar in anything but looks. He frowned. "Did you say you were Tamara? Why does he think that?" He reached forward and grabbed her arm after she smacked herself. "Hey, stop. It's okay. Just tell me what happened." Liam's head was reeling. He was so confused.

TIA HAD ALWAYS PRIDED HERSELF ON HER COOL composure. Though it wasn't impervious to all interference, she liked when people thought of her as calm. 'Together'. In comparison to her sisters loud and boisterous personality, it was stark if somebody knew them both. Now, with her head in her hands, Tia felt anything but composed. She felt itchy in her own skin, like a liar and a cheat. But, Edrik had thrown her off balance. She wasn't used to be flirted with, being charmed. And he'd done that quite unexpectedly.
Liam's hand grabbing hers stopped Tia from smacking her face again. She groaned, waiting a moment before she peeked out between her fingers. He was asking questions, and no wonder, but she really wished he wouldn't. "It's a long story..." She grumbled, but seeing as she'd made him complicit by telling her, Tia knew she owed him a bit more than that. "He fancies Tam." She sniffed, dragging her hands down her face and dropping them at her sides.
"They both play Quidditch, you know?" She rolled her sleeve over her hands and frayed at the hem of her jumper. "It happens all the time, but I've never been- I mean, nobody's asked me on a date before." Tia felt herself cringe at the reality, shrugging one shoulder up to her ear and squinting. "I didn't know what to do, I didn't know how to say no!" She shivered and huffed, slapping her hands at her sides. She was a ball of restless energy and it was so unlike her. "Everybody knows Tam, but nobody really knows I exist." This was a harsh fact, but one Tia wasn't ignorant to. She thought she'd made her peace with it. "I was just so annoyed so I said yes and now I don't know what to do." Tia said this in one breath, pulling in a great, heaving sigh when she was done. "Please help me."

Liam still wasn't quite sure that he was fully understanding what Tia was telling him. She was pretending to be Tamara? And someone actually believed that?! The idea sounded ridiculous to Liam, but he wasn't going to argue the facts with her .... at least not until he let her explain a bit.
His eyebrows furrowed when she said it was a long story. Didn't they have time? Why wouldn't she just tell him what was going on? He stayed silent, hoping that would make her feel like she had to explain more. Apparently it did, because after a few moments she started to explain in much better detail.
He hesitated when she was done. "I know you exist, Tia," he said slowly, wrapping his arms around her and pulling her in for a hug. Neither of them were particularly touchy, but Tia was his best friend. He could hug her, and he wanted to. He hesitated for a second. "How do you want me to help?" His mind was racing, trying to think of things he could do, but the major problem was that this guy didn't realize Tia was Tamara's twin. How was he supposed to help with that. "I don't know what to do, but I want to help you," he admitted after a while, hating that he had to say it.

TIA LIKED TO THINK SHE WAS IMPERVIOUS TO flattery, but she was only human, after all. When Liam earnestly declaration made her chest tight and warm. Sometimes, Tia loved that she was virtually invisible. And sometimes it was nice to feel seen. Liam was practically her best friend, the closest thing she'd ever had. He knew she was feeling fragile and insecure.
She almost hugged him, her face tight with the effort to conceal her mounting gratitude, but he beat her to it. His arms coming around her and she tensed for a moment, unsure how to proceed. After a second of hesitation she looped her arms around him and smashed her nose in to his shoulder, her wildly beating heart slowing slightly. The panic receding from her tightly scrunched eyes.
"I know, Liam." She muttered sheepishly, unwrapping herself from him with an unusual measure of reluctance. He had made her feel steady. And she thought, quite suddenly, that she loved him. Not so much in an all consuming romantic sense, but in the purest possible way. He was, quite shockingly, her voice of reason. She suddenly felt like, for all the mess she'd made, it would be fine. It was minuscule and childish. There were bigger obstacles to overcome than a simple case of mistaken identity.
"You don't have to do anything," She sighed, rubbing at her nose in mild agitation. "I just needed to tell someone, you know?" She sniffed, looking at him firmly, as if checking to see if his expression had changed. If his opinion of her had shifted. "So someone knows it was me." Who made Edrik laugh, who had the strength to perform such a ruse that she felt the rippling effect of it. "I'll just go." She shrugged, blowing a deep, exasperated breath from her mouth. "I'll go on the stupid date and I'll tell him it was me and then I'll leave." Her voice shook uncertainly, but she felt as sure as she possible could, and she looked at Liam for confirmation, lest he disagree.
