Today was going so smoothly, almost like a dream. She and Eli met and exchanged gifts and Ashley honestly couldn't be happier at the moment. She was wearing the beautiful blue and silver scarf Eli had made just for her and he was wearing her homemade scarf, with the Slytherin side showing. It really shouldn't be that big of a deal to her, but it was. She liked him. Ashley couldn't tell if Eli thought of her as anything but a friend, but she cared so much more than that. Once they'd left the Three Broomsticks, she suggested the ice skating. There didn't seem to be any argument to that, so the pair moved towards the rink. She wasn't sure if Eli knew how to skate, but she did and she looked forward to the idea of skating around with him, especially if maybe they could end up holding hands, not that she was going to get her hopes up too much. She got her skates and laced them, moving to the rink and stepping out onto it, gliding a little before turning to face Eli. "Are you ready for this, Fleming?" Ashley teased with a smirk, part of her definitely hoping that he didn't know how to ice skate well. That would make this all the more fun. Elijah Theron Fleming

THE SCARF AROUND ELI'S NECK WAS SLYTHERIN green, and so cosy that every now and again he buried his nose in it. Everything was going so smoothly, which was a welcome relief as that hadn't been the case just before the winter holidays. Eli didn't think he'd been as happy in a good while, a content smile on his face as he and Ashley wandered through the various stalls erected for the Winter Festival at Hogsmeade, until they eventually made it to the ice rink.
Eli's heart gave a nervous thump as he tentatively tied the laces of his ice skates. Every now and again he'd turn his head to look at Ashley, who was doing the same with much more enthusiasm. He'd went skiing once, it couldn't be so different, right? Except, he reckoned it was. And he'd never been a great skier anyway. Ashley looked like a natural as she entered the rink without a second of hesitation, that bright smile on her face. The sort of smile that had gotten him in this situation to begin with. How could he say no? Wobbling to his feet, Eli chuckled anxiously as he replied, "As I'll ever be..."
White knuckling the side of the rink, Eli stepped on and felt a shot of false confidence. "It's not so bad!" He declared with an easier laugh. And then he took his second step, hand drifting from the rink's perimeter edge and his feet floundered. He yelped, scrambling to grab hold of something and finding Ashley's arm. He used her to steady himself, his ears going red as he felt his knees shake uncertainly. "I- I'm a better sufer," He muttered, trying to regain his pride as they stood gripping one and other. Ashley holding him up.

When Ashley turned to face Eli, it was pretty clear to her that he was nervous. She assumed that probably meant he hadn't really been skating before, which was what she'd been hoping for ... but now she felt a little bad for hoping that. She didn't want Eli to be uncomfortable. Maybe it wouldn't take him long to catch on. As long as he had pretty good balance, he'd be fine. "Don't worry, I'm sure you'll do fine," she said with a small laugh, "and I'm here to help too!" She wasn't super strong, but she'd do what she could to help him in whatever way possible. She smiled when he stepped onto the ice and said that it wasn't too bad. Ashley was nodding, reaching forward to offer help, but he was already letting go of the wall. Things seemed to happen in slow motion as Eli started to slide around, trying to grab something. Ashley moved closer, wanting to help and hoping the two of them wouldn't land on the ice. Sure, they'd probably laugh about it if they did, but she'd rather stay upright. He grabbed her arm tightly and Ash grabbed his other hand with her free one, chuckling nervously. They hadn't been this close to one another since that kiss the other week. Her face started to get a little hot, but she decided to try and ignore it. "I'm sure you are," she answered back. "So how about this? You can teach me how to surf and I'll teach you how to ice skate and neither is allowed to make fun of the other for any struggling that might occur?" She looked up at him, a teasing glint in her eye. She couldn't help but tense slightly when she realized how close he was. She could kiss him if she wanted to. She stared up at him, the corners of her mouth turning up into a soft smile as her fingers tightened around his. Elijah Theron Fleming

IT WAS A GOOD THING ASHLEY WAS THERE TO help, like she's said. Otherwise Eli would have slammed against the ice just two steps on to it. His laughter came out in a shaky white puff, the cold air nipping his cheeks as he attempted to straighten his quaking legs and not bruise Ashley's arms all at the same time. But, Ashley had a cool confidence about her that Eli admired and envied all at once. He rarely saw her so sure of herself, it was kind of distracting.
"I know you wanna laugh." Eli grinned, nodding his head vehemently. But, first he had to stop himself from hitting the ground and embarrassing them both. "But that's a pretty good deal." He didn't mind if she poked a little fun at him, he was pretty disastrous. Plus, while she'd been distracting him with her easy smile, he'd forgotten to keep his legs shaking and was eventually standing up, his grip on Ashley loosening slightly. "So, what do I do with my feet?" He asked, looking down at his skates and the slippery ice.
Instead of walking, he began scooting along, only lifting one foot and letting the other glide smoothly. Their pace was steady, but Eli knew he couldn't keep that up for long. Soon he'd want to go fleeing around the rink, like the other couples moving around them. And he didn't want to hold Ashley back either. "When do we go fast?" He said, looking up at Ashley for the first time with a toothy grin. "Or am I getting ahead of myself?"

Ashley was so excited for the chance to help Eli do something new. She felt like most of the time he was introducing her to new things, like meteor showers and feverfew and leaf piles. It felt nice to think that she was taking her turn now. He seemed nervous, but as he gained his footing, Eli's confidence slowly returned. "I wouldn't laugh at you ... unless it was something really funny," Ashley teased, chuckling. Then she nodded, "Yup! It just means that someday you're going to have to try and teach me how to surf or it'll only be one-sided restraint." It was interesting that she actually did want him to teach her how to surf. Normally Ashley didn't want to try and do things she wasn't comfortable with or didn't know how to do. She didn't want to show weakness, but with Eli it didn't feel that way. "Oh! Umm you just kind of slide them along the ice. So, it's kind of like the more pressure you put on one foot, the more that foot will slide. As a beginner, I almost never lifted my feet. Lifting your feet makes you go faster." She and Eli were still holding on to one another, a feeling that she was sure she would never get used to. She laughed at Eli's next question. "Whenever you feel comfortable enough we can start going faster ... I just don't want you to blame me when you fall down for trying to go to fast," she laughed, sure that he wouldn't seriously blame her even if it was her fault. That just wasn't like Eli. ELI WAS TRYING HARD TO STAY FOCUSED AS HE wobbled on his skates. But, that was proving difficult with Ashley smiling at him like she was. The previous awkwardness chased away, his neck warm with her scarf, hers with his. He couldn't deny the happiness that warmed his chest, and he didn't want to. Gripping her arms tighter, he snorted a laugh and dipped his chin to look at his feet. "I'm way better on a board," He said again, though his assuring was hard to maintain when he was slipping around in a sheet of ice. "But, I won't make any promises..." Though he'd never make fun of her, sometimes it was good to laugh.
Eager to pick up speed now that he'd gotten his balance, Eli almost lifted his feet. But, he'd already embarrassed himself enough. He didn't think he could recover from a fall. And yet still, the heel of his foot lifted slightly, almost involuntarily. He shook and gripped her arms tighter. "Okay, don't think I'm ready for that!" He said in a rush, laughing lightly to abate the heat in his cheeks. "Just... you go fast and pull me along." He quirked his brows daringly, nudging her forward as he leaned in close.
Their noses were almost touching when the first roar shook the banners strung along the rinks perimeter. Eli jolted, his head whipping towards the sound at the same time as his feet skidded out from under him and they went crashing to the ground. Eli landed hard on his hip, but he didn't feel it. He couldn't take his eyes off the mass of giant creatures swarming the sky above Hogsmeade. "Dragons..." Eli breathed, just as the first scaled created landed hard on one of the gabled roofs of the village town. He scrambled to his knees, suddenly remembering that he was very nearly incapacitated in his skates. And worse still, so was Ashley. "We gotta move!" He said, wild eyed and thrumming with heady adrenaline. Chaos erupted around them.

Eli confirmed that he was good on a board, which wasn't a surprise to Ashley at all. Being from California, it was almost expected that he was good at surfing. There were prejudices that went along with any place one lived. She grinned when he said he wouldn't make any promises and then shrugged, "Well, if you don't make any, I guess I can't hold you to any." It was a sound enough answer. She felt comfortable with Eli though, even at the idea of doing something she'd never done before. Anything with him would be fun. Ashley couldn't help but giggle when Eli seemed to lose his balance and held her tighter. She liked the feeling, loved the idea that she was so close to him. It was different than anything they'd ever done before, but she liked it. She laughed outright when he confirmed that he wasn't ready to lift his feet yet. Was that why he lost his balance? Did he try? "I guess I can try to do that," she agreed with a chuckle, trying to get herself to speed up a little, even going backwards. She could skate backwards, she'd just never tried to do it pulling someone after her. It was actually working, until the roar came. Ashley jumped at the same time as Eli, and she was just as much to blame for their fall as he was. The wind was knocked out of her, her heart pounded, and she still wasn't sure what was going on. She twisted to look up at the sky, seeing what was going on at the same time Eli said the words. Her eyes widened in fear. While dragons were beautiful and strong magical creatures, they were dangerous and she'd never wanted to be in such close proximity to one. Yet, here she was. "Eli, we should go," she muttered, rushing to her feet. She wanted to skate away and get her shoes back on, but she couldn't just leave him. He agreed, saying they should move, and Ashley grabbed his hand, trying to pull him along quickly, adrenaline pumping through her. Somehow, they miraculously got to the edge of the rink without incident. It almost seemed like none of the dragons were paying them any attention. Once back on solid, normal ground, Ashley let go of Eli's hand, rushing toward where she left her shoes. She just wanted to be able to leave and get to safety with him and figured Eli would stay right with her. "We need to hurry!" She shouted, not even noticing the dragon, whose attention turned to her when she shouted. ELI HAD NEVER BEEN SO CONFLICTED BEFORE. His blood thrumming with thrumming with a mixture of fear and exhilaration. Lily Potter had once told him she could hook him up with her Dragonologist father. Give him a chance to see a dragon in the flesh. He'd have offered her his soul for a deal like that. What he hadn't expected, was for his first encounter with a dragon to be made on an ice rink in a tiny village just outside of his school.
Eli tore his gaze away from the jagged silhouette at the sound of Ashley's face. Reality crashing down on him, accompanied by the raucous sound of screaming and hollering. A roar splitting the sky and ringing in his ears. She was ahead of them as they skidded towards the exit. Bodies all around them jumping over the barriers in an attempt to flee as the thunder of dragons grew perilously close. Eli scrambled behind Ashley, their hands linked but his feet were frustratingly clumsy on the ice.
Eventually, their fingers slipped apart and Eli watched Ashley push past the barrier with relief. He followed soon after, the blades scraping against the concrete as he stopped to pull the boots from his feet. Tossing them aside haphazardly in favour of speed. And then Ashley's head lifted as she yelled for him to hurry. He was trying, but he'd only gotten his second boot off when a screech rang out far too close to them both.
Eli's head whipped around at the same time as a dragon landed on the edge of the rink. Eli was close enough that he could see the way its massive claws gripped the rinks edge. Gracefully perched like a bird of prey, but its jaws were opening. Its glassy eyes pinned on Ashley as they both froze. It burped a cloud of fire that engulfed the bench, turning its head to lash the flames up in Ashley's direction. Eli didn't even think, almost aware of what was going to happen before it did. He reached over, still barefoot, and yanked Ashley by her pretty constellation scarf.
Pulling her off the bench and behind him, Eli was seized by a pinned focus in his panic The flames missed her by a hairs breadth and the air was filled with the stench of singed fabric. But, he had her arms and she seemed whole. Eli dared to break his gaze from the dragon for just a moment. Turning his head to look at Ashley, to confirm that she was okay. His hand went up to cup her cheek, their faces a matching, ashen pallor. "Are you okay?" He asked, but then his head turned at the sound of the barrier breaking under an immense weight.
The dragon had shifted itself so suddenly, the structure had split. Eli had a second to push Ashley out of the way before a massive, reptilian tale turned and caught his middle, tossing him through the air. For a second, Eli felt like he was flying. The blind pain in his gut dulled by the chill of the air around him. And then he landed hard on the ruined ice, skidding a few feet before he thwacked his head against the ground and the world went horribly dark.

Why did she draw attention to herself? When Ashley heard the load scream behind her, she turned and froze just in time to see a dragon there, staring at her. She couldn't even remember to breathe as she looked into the dark eyes that seemed to be glaring at her. She didn't know what to do. For the first time in her life, Ashley's mind went completely blank. She didn't know how to make this better or how to escape from the dragon without getting herself killed, as well as Eli. She watched the dragon's mouth open, but she still couldn't move. She was paralyzed by fear. The fire was shooting right towards her, Ashley watching it come. Every second felt like an hour as she realized that this was how she was going to die. Then, suddenly she was pulled to the side, away from the fire. Ashley didn't know how or by whom. Her mind was racing, but at the same time a pile of mush, until she saw Eli. He pulled her away from the bench, away from the fire, holding her arms carefully. She stared into his eyes, her heart pounding, breathing heavily. He cupped her cheek, asking if she was okay. Ash started to nod, but then something was breaking and her attention was drawn back to the dragon, which was still focused on them. Suddenly she was no longer in Eli's arms, pushed so that she was falling onto the ground, watching helplessly as the dragon's tail hit Eli and he flew away from her, all the way back to the ice of the rink. Ashley screamed in horror, unable to tear her eyes from him as he hit the ice and lay still. She turned her attention back to the dragon, which was now advancing on her once more. Luckily for her, however, her screams got the attention of a group of adult witches and wizards not too far away. The dragon's attention was torn from her as the group started firing confundus charms and other spells to try and incapacitate it. The dragon started attacking those shooting at it and forgot all about Ashley. She stared, almost transfixed, until something clicked in her mind. Eli. "I need a healer!" Ashley shouted, but didn't wait for someone to answer. Nor did she waste time looking for one. Instead she ran to Eli's side. He was still lying deadly still on the ice. Her heart pounded as she fell to her knees beside him. "Eli," her voice was breathless, but Ashley reached forward and cradled his head carefully, moving so she could lay it on her lap. "Eli please wake up. Can you hear me? Are you okay?" Ashley heard the roaring of the dragon behind her somewhere, the shouts of the people fighting it, but she didn't care. She focused instead on the boy in front of her, the dark-haired boy who'd saved her life twice in the last few minutes. She didn't know it, but a tear slipped down her cheek as she stared at him anxiously. Elijah Theron Fleming

THE WORLD WENT DARK IN A BLINDING SECOND. But, he came to in what felt like the blink of an eye. In reality, it had probably been a few moments too long. The light so bright that he had to squint, a wet, hot pain burning the back of his head as he lay prone on the ice. His eyes blinking lazily, his mouth filled with saliva. He couldn't see for a moment and a dumb, watery thought occurred to him absently. 'Have I gone blind?' it said, quite calmly, but he turned his head and realised he'd been staring at the cloudy sky.
Ashley's face filled his field of vision and his head smile began goofy. He attempted to lift himself towards her on instinct, but his body felt like a rock. His right arm trapped under him at an odd and numbing angle. He'd probably broken it. "Ash!" He declared, his voice a little hoarse. "I think I've bumped my head." Eli didn't even realise she'd been crying, he just remembered how lovely her hair looked against the light. And how he'd bought her a scarf exactly like that...
"Hey, I bought you a scarf just like that one." Eli said, almost accusingly. He lifted his hand to tug at the fringe and then frowned. "Wait..." And then he felt incredibly cold, a roiling twist in his gut. "Where am I, Ash?" And then he heard the mighty cry of an indignant dragon as it was bound by a group of aurors. Eli's head spun and he felt the echo of dread, something tugging at him - beyond the pain and Ashley and the wet cold under his body and head.

Ashley wasn't sure she could handle this. Eli was right there, right with her, but he wasn't responding to anything she said, to her asking him to wake up. After a few seconds his eyes opened, but they were unfocused, opening and closing with no recognition to where he was or what was going on. Ashley's heart lurched and she felt like she was going to be sick. Did he hit his head too hard? Was he going to be okay? "Merlin, no," she breathed, reaching to brush his hair off his forehead as her eyes watered. She closed her eyes, whispering a quiet plea to him. "Please wake up," Ash begged, eyes still closed. "I'll never forgive myself if anything happens to you because of me. I-" she sniffled, biting her lip as words spilled out of her. Words she never meant to actually say out loud, but couldn't hold back in this moment. "I like you Eli. So, so much more than just as my friend. You make me happy and you make me want to be a better person. You mean everything to me." She lowered her head for a moment. "I can't lose you. Please wake up." She finally opened her eyes, but saw no sign of recognition from him. Ashley looked up from him, unable to watch him like this. It was all her fault. He'd been too busy taking care of her to protect himself and she'd never let herself live that down. She jumped when she heard his voice saying her name, her eyes instantly meeting his as he said that he bumped his head. Her heart lifted and she breathed a sigh of relief. He knew who she was. "Hey, shhhhhh," she told him, brushing at his hair again with her free hand. "Just hold still. You'll be okay."Next he noticed her scarf, saying that he got it for her, and then he seemed to remember. Ashley's lip trembled as she nodded soothingly. "It's okay, Eli. This is the scarf you got me. We're at the festival." It was better to be honest, right? "There's been an accident. Dragons are here and you-" She choked up for a second, blinked rapidly and took a deep breath to try and calm herself. "You got hurt, but it's going to be okay. Adults are taking care of the dragon and I'm sure healers are on the way. Just hold still, okay?" Ashley wasn't sure if she should have told him all of that, but she couldn't help herself. IN ANOTHER WORLD ELI'S HEART SKIPPED A beat. Ashley's words registered and he wanted to respond. Having wished only that she'd say such a thing for months now. He'd liked her since Ilvermorny, pining after her when they'd fallen out. And then feeling it grow at a terrifying rate once they'd rekindled their friendship. She was acknowledging the massive thing between them, but all he could think about was how he'd gotten on the ground. His brain was muddled, surely the result of a concussion, but he wasn't stupid. The words settled in his chest like little dragonflies, warming him in the meantime.
Turning his head, that same thin smile was on his face. But, it dissolved in to a watery frown as he reached his hand up to touch her face. His fingers brushing the wetness there. "Ash..." He mumbled, his nose crunched as he stared at her. I wanted to ask why she was crying, to tell her not to cry. Had he done something wrong? But, these were all secondary thoughts as he had shifted his body reaching for her again and he felt a shooting pain in his arm, it paralysed him for a second and his mouth went slack. All at once, his pale face turned a sickly green and his nose scrunched as he mumbled. "Think 'm gonna be sick." Before he bent his head to one side and began to vomit furiously. His head was bleeding and his shoulder was dislocated.

Ashley froze when Eli brushed her cheek with his fingers. She didn't know what he was doing, why he was touching her face, but it only took a moment. Once she felt the wetness she realized she was crying and Eli was trying to comfort her, even though he was the one that was hurt. She wanted to take his hand in hers and kiss it, but she was just now starting to realize what she told him just a few moments ago. She didn't think he was awake enough to hear or register her words, but was he? Her pulse increased as she looked down at him. Eli started to move and Ashley was about to tell him not to when he froze, his face turning green and her mouth fell open. He turned to the side and started to throw up. Normally that would have been all Ashley needed to see to leave. She didn't like being around sick people, but Eli wasn't sick, he was injured. Because of her. She couldn't leave him. Instead, she ran her fingers through his hair, trying to soothe him, to show him that he wasn't alone. "You're going to be okay," she whispered, though she absolutely hated seeing him like this. There wasn't much else she could do to help him, was there? After a moment, she started looking around, hoping to see someone who could help. The dragon was taken care of, gone in fact, and she saw a man walking through the crowd, seeming to stop and check on people before nodding, giving them a potion or bandaging them up. Ashley could hear the sound of other not-too-distant roars. Were there other dragons? She couldn't focus on that right now. She raised a hand and waved it in the air, trying to get the man's attention. "Over here please!" She shouted, sighing with relief when the man saw her and started running in her direction. "Help is coming," she breathed to Eli. Elijah Theron Fleming @rory

Rory hated attacks like this. Sure, he was glad that he could help people. That he had the abilities to leave as soon as he heard about it, get to the scene and give immediate relief. Such was his training over the years, but that didn't mean he had to like the circumstances. Now, dragons? What were dragons doing in Hogsmeade during the Winter Festival? He was certain that this wasn't an accident, but Rory wasn't in charge of investigating or anything. His duty was to help those who couldn't help themselves. He hurried through the alleys in Hogsmeade, trying to find as many injured people as he could. Lukily, there weren't too many of them. Most people seem to have seen the dragons approaching and either got out of the way, or found a group to fight them with, so most injuries he saw weren't severe. He ended up bandaging and splinting a few, but there wasn't much else needed. Until he saw the blonde girl at the ice rink. Even from a distance, he knew something was wrong. She was sitting, waving an arm at him, tears falling down her face and ... was that a person lying on the ice beside her? She looked almost frantic and Rory started to run. Even if this ended up not being too severe of an injury, it was scary to her and he would do his best to help the person and her. "What happened?" Rory demanded when he reached her, kneeling by the boy who was obviously not doing well. He checked his pulse, using his wand to scan the boy to find out what was wrong while she told about the dragons catching them unawares and hitting the boy with its tail, knocking him all the way across the rink. Rory nodded, frowning. Then he glanced up to the girl. "Don't worry," he muttered, seeing the anxiety in her eyes. He turned his attention to the boy. Eli, she'd called him. "You're going to be okay. Looks like you've dislocated your shoulder, and I'm pretty sure you have a bit of a concussion." Okay, Rory was underselling it. The kid had a bad concussion, but he'd be fine. "I'm going to take you back to the school so they can take care of you there." He frowned, "but I should probably fix that shoulder before we go. Brace yourself." Rory inhaled and then flicked his wand, watching as the bone popped right back in where it should be. The break still needed to head, but he'd let the healers up at the castle take care of that. The boy was okay to move now. He conjured a stretcher, carefully moving the boy onto it and nodding to the girl. "Let's go." Rory kept up a brisk pace as he walked back to the castle. He wanted to make sure the boy was well taken care of, but he also knew that he needed to get back quickly to find others. Once in the hospital wing, he nodded upon seeing a familiar face. Tia. They'd worked together quite a bit. "He had a dislocated shoulder, so you'll want to check the bone, and a concussion," Rory said, helping get the boy onto the bed. The girl trailed behind nervously, almost like she wasn't sure if she should still be there or not. Rory smiled to her. "You're okay," he told her with a nod before leaving to find someone else to help. --- the end --- Elijah Theron Fleming @ashley
