So...sometimes Emrys wished that she had a knack for theatrics and drama. Then she might have a more interesting way to conduct this letter to her mother other than that nothing interesting was going on so far and all was regular. Poor Emrys was so devoid in color details and a courtly way of saying things, though. She was normally satisfied to just write down whatever came to mind in what was similar to a soldierly report. She was used to being painfully frank and blunt. But this time, for some reason, she wished she could add something to the letter that wasn't bland or drab. She was a bit tired of having nothing interesting to say to her mother in a letter. This was her mother who she was more close to than anyone else, besides her brother.
She sat back on the couch and sighed, staring at the piece of parchment in her hands. Seriously, she had thought that being an auror was going to be very hard, but it seemed that writing a mere reply to her own mother was proving to be just as difficult. Because, honestly, what was there to say? Emrys was never one for talking about her inner feelings, emotions, wishes, and thoughts or such petty little riffraff that poetic and dreamy young girls were used to confiding in. And she didn't really feel anything other than her sense of duty to finish up school and start her job as an auror, but that was hardly writing about.

A lot had changed so far this year, but perhaps the biggest change for Alice Longbottom was that she spent many nights out in the common room as opposed to staying cooped up behind the curtains of her four poster. She was relaxed to see that tonight, as she entered through the portrait hole, the common room was pretty quiet. She wasn't a fan of the place when it wasn't. She looked around the room at the other badgers. There were some people reading and studying individually and a small group of third year girls huddled together, talking quietly. Alice's eyes then scanned over one of her dormitory mates, who looks to be writing homework or something. Alice glanced around a moment. Usually Alice would sit by herself but upon seeing this particular Hufflepuff, she decided differently.
With her school bag over her shoulder, Alice went to seat herself down next to Emrys Nightingale on the couch. Alice rather liked Emrys. She was quiet and kept to herself, and she never seemed to care about what others were doing or what they thought of her. Alice admired that, and thought of Emrys as one of the few at Hogwarts she really liked, even though she knew so little about her. As she sat down, she flashed Emrys a small smile. After a brief moment of silence, she decided to speak. "Hey," she said, simply.

Perhaps what Emrys needed was a good distraction, for concentrating too hard on trying to conjure up a fancy letter and not being able to think of something interesting was taking its toll on her internal health. It was rather ridiculous that she didn't know how to write a letter full of heart and soul to her own beloved mother, but that was the painful truth. She never really gave a damn about that, but now she was thinking otherwise. It caused her to be frustrated, but luckily before she could develop a migraine over such a menial task as writing a letter, her housemate came.
Alice's presence gave her some reprieve. She got to acknowledge someone she liked. It went without saying that Alice was a good person, but she also had a disposition that Emrys approved of. She was quiet, guarded, disciplined, and intelligent in Emrys eyes, traits that she found best and the total opposite of a sloppy sluggard, the sort that Emrys found irritable. Perhaps Alice liked Emrys for that reason, too, although maybe Emrys could be rather boring sometimes. Nonetheless, the two girls were the least likely to have a giggly and giddy female friendship that girls usually had in school, but it seemed that both of them were content with just chatting in a nonchalant manner.
Emrys glanced at Alice when the other Hufflepuff sat beside her on the couch, giving her a nod. "Hello," Emrys greeted her. She glanced at the school bag that Alice had with her, knowing it must be filled with textbooks and school supplies, and then looked at the blonde again. "Are you going to do your homework? I would do mine, too, but I decided to compose a letter to my mother first." She heaved a sigh. "It's actually proving to be more difficult a task to me than I thought it would be." Normally Emrys didn't confide about personal things to others, just because she wasn't used to heart to heart talks and that cheesy emotional stuff, but she'd be lying if she acted as if she was scribbling down the words of the letter with aplomb as if there were no tomorrow.

Alice liked that she didn't have to act a certain way around Emrys. She wasn't exactly outgoing or anything, but she was herself to the point of which she conversed easily with Emrys without having to hide what she thought or felt. Their conversations were always filled with intelligent topics that would bore anyone else but not these two girls. Alice felt a comradery with Emrys. A lot of people thought the two were quite unapproachable. Alice being rude and standoffish to most people more often than not and Emrys always having a blank, bored look on her face and never really saying much to others, just like Alice. That was why Alice felt so comfortable talking to her. That, and out of all of their dorm mates, Emrys was the only one that Alice didn't find utterly obnoxious. She wasn't at all like Cordelia Finch-Fletchley and her best friend, who were loud, boisterous, and far too bubbly for their own good.
The blonde Hufflepuff looked at the brunette, the corners of her mouth moving upward into a brief slight smile as her fellow badger greeted her in return. Alice glanced down at the parchment in front of Emrys. She appeared to be writing a letter, but Alice respected Emrys and she didn't want to impose so she averted her eyes. She didn't notice that Emrys's eyes had glanced at the school she had as well.
Alice glanced back at her own bag then looked back up at Emrys with a slight shrug. "I was going to attempt... but it's Potions so..." her voice trailed off. She was quite awful at potions and she didn't really like to voice that insecurity so she didn't finish her sentence. Alice was thankful for a topic change when Emrys brought up the letter to her mother. "Oh. She writes for the Daily Prophet, doesn't she?" She asked. Alice was interested to know a little more about Emrys, for she considered Emrys to be a friendly acquaintance that she would likely one day hope to call a friend.

"Ah, yes, Potions. It's a difficult class," Emrys agreed. "I'm anything but fond of it." She didn't care at all for it, so you can imagine how torturous it was for her to make herself remember the tedious brewing instructions. It was especially essential that she did well in the class, now that she was in her last year at school, and she hated that completely. Once she was out of here, Emrys was not going to be glancing backward on plenty of subjects she had been forced to learn of at school.
Emrys stared at the blank piece of parchment before glancing back at Alice when the other girl made a query regarding her mother's profession. "Yes, she does," Emrys replied. "She's the editor-in-chief." She was proud of what her mother was able to accomplish, providing accurate news and information to the public. Her mother was also a good writer, too...so different from Emrys, who was too blunt to write attention-getting sentences and passages.
"And your mother is the owner of the Leaky Cauldron?" she asked. She knew what Alice's father, did, of course. He was the Herbology professor here at Hogwarts. She wasn't exactly sure what Alice's mother did, though, but had seen her before at the Leaky Cauldron and heard people associate the woman with the ownership of the establishment.
