Kinsey was avoiding Riley. She was trying so hard not to let it show, but it was two days after the dragon attack and she still felt so embarrassed. She'd gotten hurt because she didn't listen to him and they both knew it. Even worse than that, she'd completely lost it on the way home. She passed out, or something. Honestly, she was assuming that Riley carried her home, but she was mortified about what happened. She'd woken up in his bed, for goodness' sake! Granted, it smelled so nice and she'd been so comfortable, until she realized where she was. She couldn't even look at him anymore.
So she'd spent a lot of time reading lately. She got a few books for Christmas and was sitting in her favorite spot to read, the windowsill in the common room. She got lost in the books, not even noticing when it got dark. Today, she'd been chilling in the hoodie that Riley gave her for her birthday. It was such a comfort to her, even though he was engaged to someone else now. However, sometime during the afternoon she got really hot, so she took off the hoodie and leaned against the window on it as she continued to read. Eventually her eyes started burning. Groaning, Kinsey looked around herself. It was almost midnight! She got up, gathering up her blanket, and grabbing her book before heading to her bed. She didn't even realize she'd left the sweatshirt behind as she collapsed into her bed, not bothering to change or do anything.

Riley had not been avoiding Kinsey, he hadn’t exactly been searching her out, but he certainly had not been avoiding her. He had been taking advantage of the emptiness of the castle to claim the best spots, and, like the women he loved, he had spent the last few days immersed in the world of books. All non-fiction of course. He was halfway through the last year of his schooling and soon would start his professional career. So he wanted to make sure that he felt ready, even though he knew that they would train him during his intern periods, he wasn’t sure how much training he’d get into therapy, which he really wanted to do, so some of that might have to be self taught. Or at least, that was his reasoning.
As the sun set after dinner that night, Riley Fudge made his way from the windowsill on the 5th floor that he had been perched in for the last few hours, up to the Ravenclaw tower. No one was there when he walked in, which he wasn’t expecting anyone to be, since there were only a handful of Ravenclaws who had stayed for the break. He walked through the empty common room towards the boys dorms when something caught his eye near the window. Lit by the dim light of the fire from across the room, he saw the metallic zipper reflecting into the window. He picked up the garment and realized it was the hoodie that he had given Kinsey for her birthday. He wasn’t sure why she had left it behind, but he picked it up anyway, holding it in his hands after so long felt a little surreal. Without really thinking, he took it up to bed with him. It was almost like being close to Kinsey again.

The next morning, the last day of the year, Kinsey woke up still feeling tired. It wasn't terrible, but she still didn't feel her best. She showered and got ready for the day, putting everything away that she'd just dropped on her bed the night before. That was when she noticed. The hoodie was missing. Kinsey checked under her bed and under the covers, even checking the closet and her dresser before deciding it wasn't in the room.
She was starting to feel a little frantic. Of course, a hoodie wasn't typically a very important item of clothing, but this one meant a lot to her. Riley gave it to her for her birthday last year, and more than that, he let her borrow it the night they met. It was a connection to Riley that she didn't want to give up. She hurried down to the common room, going straight to the windowsill where she spent the previous day, but it was nowhere to be found. Biting her lip, Kinsey started searching the room. She searched under all the furniture, beneath cushions on the couches and basically anywhere she could think. It wasn't there.
Eventually she made her way back to the windowsill, feeling entirely disheartened. She couldn't believe she lost it, that it was nowhere to be found. She wanted to cry, but instead forced herself to stare outside the window, hunched over and hugging her knees as she did so. She saw the beautiful view, but Kinsey wasn't focused on it in the slightest. She was trying to figure out where her hoodie could be.

Riley walked down from his dorm the next morning with the intent to leave the hoodie back on the windowsill where he had found it. However, as he walked down the steps he became aware of another in the common room and some frantic movements. When he made it to the common room he saw Kinsey, standing there, looking out the window looking upset and disheartened. “You wouldn’t be looking for this, would you?” he asked, holding the hoodie up to her from across the room where he was still standing at the bottom of the stairs to his dorm.

Kinsey heard someone approaching from behind, but she didn't bother to turn and look. She was busy wracking her brain, trying to figure out where she could have left it, or who might have taken it. She'd just been so tired last night ... she couldn't remember. She spun away from the window when she heard Riley's voice, hardly recognizing his words until she saw what was in his hands. "You found it," she sighed, a smile instantly covering her face. "I ... I thought I lost it for good," Kinsey admitted. What was the point in hiding the truth from him? Riley could always see straight through her. She walked over to him, glancing down at the ground as she remembered why she hadn't sought him out the past few days. She was an idiot, that's why. "Thank you for bringing it to me, Riley." He knew what it meant to her ... at least he should.

“I did, I saw it on the windowsill last night when I came back into the common room.” he told her, handing off the hoodie and letting her feel the peace of mind that she seemed to be craving in the moment. “I’m surprised you still have it.” he wasn’t at all, he actually really liked that she still had it, but he wanted it to seem a little less weird that he still knew how much it must have meant to her. He didn’t want to let on in this moment that he liked that she still loved him. It wasn’t fair of him to want to keep her affections when he was engaged to another woman. “And um, you wouldn’t happen to have been avoiding me… would you?” he hadn’t seen her since the attack and that was odd.

Riley confirmed that he saw it last night on the windowsill. He must have taken it upstairs with him for some reason, but Kinsey was glad that he brought it back. She took the hoodie when he offered it, feeling herself start to relax now that she had it again. She hadn't lost it. Her cheek started to itch and Kinsey just scratched it against the hoodie, too lazy to lift her hand. Her eyes widened slightly when she smelled Riley's cologne. That had worn off of this hoodie months ago. Did he wear it or something? Or did he know how it felt like one of her only links to him and was trying to help? Her eyes met his when he mentioned being surprised that she had it. Lie. It wasn't a malicious lie or anything, he was trying to be nice Kinsey knew. She shook her head, "I wear it all the time, it's the best hoodie I have" she muttered softly, hoping that didn't give her away too much. She never went to bed without it. When it was too hot to wear, she used it as a pillow. Kinsey knew it was pathetic, but she couldn't help it.
Then he asked if she was avoiding him. He noticed? Kinsey bit her lip and then looked away guiltily, unable to meet his eyes. "You didn't do anything wrong," she said, not even bothering to answer his question. He'd already know the answer from her reaction. "I'm just an idiot." Kinsey didn't want to explain any more than that, but she knew that if Riley asked she would. She couldn't keep anything from him.

She took the hoodie back and riley noticed her scratch her face and smell the fabric when she did, he had sprayed it with his cologne again. That had been the whole point of giving it to her in the first place. It was supposed to be something that she could keep for the summer when they couldn’t be together as often. She admitted that she loved it and wore it all of the time. He smiled and nodded, but didn’t make another comment about it. There wasn’t much more to be said about it.
He shook his head. “No you’re not an idiot. I’ve just missed seeing you around.” she admitted with a small shrug after she attempted to explain. “If you want me to give you some space I’m happy to continue doing so.” he promised. He didn’t want to give her space, he wanted to talk to her while they still could, but, he wanted her to be comfortable.

Riley didn't say anything else about the hoodie, which wasn't really a surprise to Kinsey. He was generally pretty straightforward, which was one of the things she loved about him. He was calm and thoughtful and sweet. It made being around him so much easier, when they got the chance to be together.
She looked up to him when he told her that she wasn't an idiot, that he just missed her. Kinsey blushed, "I'm sorry. I've missed you too." It wasn't a lie. She always missed Riley. Whenever they weren't together, that is. Her eyes widened when he offered to give her more space, being the indisputably sweet guy she'd fallen in love with last year. What was she doing, hiding from him? They only had a little bit of time before the break would be over and his fiancee came back. She should be enjoying this while she could.
Kinsey shook her head automatically, "No, I don't need more space," she answered. "I just needed to think through some things, but I'm good now." It felt like everything was in perspective now. Yes, she was an idiot with the dragons and Riley probably had to carry her home and he let her sleep in his bed because he was the kindest guy she knew. That didn't change the fact that their time together was limited and she didn't want to waste it. "Sorry. So, are you busy today or do you want to spend some time together?" It was New Year's Eve. Maybe he did have plans, but Kinsey suddenly didn't want to do anything with anyone but him.

Riley watched her face carefully as she spoke and as she formulated her thoughts. He wanted to know what she thought of him, when she truly thought of him. It was hard, of course, since he couldn’t actually read her mind, but he could tell that there was something that had been bothering her. He didn’t want to push about it, but he wished that there was a way to reassure her. She then asked him if he had plans for today, New Years eve. He shook his head. “We can hang out if you want to. I don’t have anything else to do…” he wanted to add that there also wasn’t anyone else that he wanted to spend time with, but he didn’t want to scare her away right after her just got her back.

Kinsey really wished she didn’t always have to feel like such an idiot around Riley. She loved him, for goodness’ sake. She wanted to be with him, to have his arms around her again and feel safe in his embrace, but all those thoughts were dangerous. Yes, she knew Riley still loved her. He told her as much, but that didn’t change anything. He was still going to marry Priscilla, he was still lost to her. Which was the hardest part of all.
Still, Kinsey was trying to not think about that right now. Priscilla was home for Christmas and Riley was here with Kinsey. It would probably be the last chance they had to be alone together before his wedding and she didn’t want to waste it anymore trying to stay away from him. He agreed that they could hang out if she wanted to, telling her that he didn’t have any other plans and Kinsey smiled. Really, his agreeing to do something with her shouldn’t have come as a surprise, but it always did. She was internally preparing herself to lose him and she was just waiting for one of these days when he would push her away. “Of course I want to! What do you want to do?” She pursed her lips, trying to think of some interesting thing they could do to end out the year.

She agreed to want to hang out with him and asked what he wanted to do. He shrugged. “I didn’t really have much planned for today. I figured I’d go and get breakfast now and then read or something, so I’m pretty free to do anything.” he admitted. “I’d still really like to go and get breakfast though.” he smirked, teasing a little. He wasn’t ever one to skip breakfast. There were times when he skipped lunch or dinner, but he never missed breakfast. He needed his tea and his toast to finish waking up for the day. “Do you want to go down to the great hall with me?” he asked. He knew that she didn’t always like to eat in the great hall because of her ability, however, with so few people around, he didn’t think that she would mind.

Riley explained that his only real plan for the day was breakfast and Kinsey giggled, noticing that he was teasing. "Okay, okay let's get you your breakfast before you get all grouchy," she teased. She never thought he was grouchy. Aloof and distant sometimes, but he was always kind to her. She nodded to his last question, "The Great Hall is just fine." It warmed her heart that Riley was still being so considerate. He knew she didn't like to be in large groups of people, so he asked instead of just leading the way. That was one of her favorite things about him, his consideration for her. --- time jump --- Kinsey stretched, lifting her hands above her head and groaning a little as she looked at the clock nearby. It was 11:45. Was she really still awake. She smiled as she looked at Riley nearby. The two of them spent the entire day together. They ate, took a walk on the grounds, talked ... she could hardly believe it was so late now and the two of them were still together. She loved it. Today would definitely be a day that she'd remember when she thought back on their time together. She lowered her arms, chuckling. "I've never actually stayed up on New Year's Eve," she admitted to Riley with a smile. "I normally fall asleep, even if I'm trying to stay awake." Kinsey wasn't "trying" to stay awake right now, but she didn't want to go to bed yet. @riley

Riley didn’t have a problem staying up on New Years Eve, he often stayed up well into the early house of the morning, hid by the curtains on his 4 post bed with his wand lit for reading light. He was pretty used to not getting more than 5 hours of sleep, so staying up until midnight wasn’t a big deal for him. “You don’t have to stay up, you can go to sleep if you wish.” He insisted. He didn’t want to make her uncomfortable. However, this was a much better new years eve, just sitting with her, than he would normally be having. This was the first year in his life that he hadn’t attended some large New Years eve party with his family.

Kinsey rolled her eyes when Riley told her she could go to bed if she wanted. "That's not what I was saying," she answered. "I mean, I know it's almost midnight, but it doesn't feel late to me yet." Kinsey shrugged a little. She cocked her head to the side as she looked over at him. "Unless you're tired of me ... I could leave if you want." She didn't really think Riley was trying to get rid of her, but she tried to force her expression to stay serious, which didn't work. A small smile crept onto her expression only seconds later. "Do you want to do something, like play a game? Or just talk?" Honestly, Kinsey didn't care what they did. As long as she was doing something with Riley Fudge, she would be entirely happy. Her only regret was that she couldn't freeze time now and live forever in these minutes with him. She didn't want things to change.
