Kinsey was so confused. First Riley and Priscilla, then Toby. What was happening here? Sure, she'd always known there was the possibility that Riley would change his mind and fall in love with Priscilla, but she never imagined he would treat her this way. Also, she never could have anticipated how deep Toby's anger at her was. Didn't he feel comfortable enough around her to tell her when he didn't like things? That way she could try and work on them? Apparently not.
She wished she could stop the tears as she watched Toby striding away from her, but Kinsey couldn't. Honestly, she couldn't imagine how this day could get any worse. She saw Lydia offering her a small wave from a ways away, but Kinsey didn't try to approach her. She knew Lydia didn't like her, so she didn't want to make things any worse than they already were. Besides that, an owl was flying down to her.
It seemed irritated almost and Kinsey shook her head at her bad luck. She couldn't imagine who would be writing to her, but she removed the letter, watching as the owl flew away almost immediately. Then she opened it, her eyes quickly scanning the letter once, then again. No.
This time it was a letter from Dan Hoh. They'd met over the summer, a quick friendship blossoming. Or at least, that's what Kinsey thought. She'd appreciated Dan because he had a similar ability to hers, so she could talk to him about things. Obviously he didn't feel the same way. He all but told her in this letter that he was sick of her and that he didn't want to talk to her anymore. Her eyes were swimming with tears again and Kinsey walked across the grounds blindly, hardly paying attention to where she was going. She just needed to find a place where she could be alone and work through all of this, though there obviously wasn't anything she could do to fix it.

Dominic was walking casually, nodding in greeting ar Priscilla and Riley as they passed. Of course giving Lydia a short hello as well. In general he didn't talk to anyone, just silent and gruffly greeted. He didn't have time for all those people.
He saw Kinsey up ahead, reading a letter. She looked upset. He frowned, walking up to her. "Hey, hey, what's wrong?" he reached out to place a hand on her shoulder.

Nothing about this made any sense, but at the moment Kinsey was kind of past caring. She didn't want to pay any more attention to anyone around her. She didn't want to notice Lydia, or see Riley and Priscilla if she turned around. Heck, she didn't want to see people she didn't even know. All she wanted to do was be alone, try and figure out what was going on. Maybe someone was putting a spell on all the people she cared about? That was highly unlikely, though. It just didn't make any sense and she still was having a hard time holding back the tears.
She was too focused on her own thoughts and trying to keep her emotions at bay that she didn't even notice someone approaching her. The voice was familiar, but there was also something distinctly different to it, like she'd never heard it sounding this gentle or something. Someone touched her shoulder and Kinsey turned around, confused that she didn't recognize the intentions. Her eyes widened. "Dom? What- uh, n-nothing. Don't worry about it," she muttered, turning away from him. What the heck was going on? Did he think she'd confide in him so he could use even more of her worries against her. But those intentions ... he wasn't trying to hurt her. She was so confused.

She seemed confused to see him, which was confusing to him. What was the matter with her? "It doesn't look like nothing. Did -" he turned to where he had seen Riley and Priscilla pass by him. Then he turned back to Kinsey, giving her shoulder a small squeeze. "Did Riley say something to you? Gods, that guy is such a dick," he frowned, then moved his arm from her shoulder to wrap around both of her shoulders. "Come on, there's pistachio ice cream in the kitchen with our names on it. Maybe we can even shove some of it into Priscilla's favorite hat," he started to steer her toward the kitchens. "She could use a makeover anyway. Hey! Move it!" he called to a small group of first years on front of him. They scattered like they'd seen the devil himself.
He was still a bully, just not bullying her.

What in the world was going on? Dom was being nice to her? He insisted that it didn't look like nothing, glancing over to where Riley and Priscilla stood. Kinsey looked away, though her attention turned back to Dom when he squeezed her shoulder. She nodded slowly, "Yeah." Granted, Riley only spoke to her because she approached him, but Dom didn't seem surprised at all by this turn of events. He wrapped his arm around her shoulder comfortingly and Kinsey found herself leaning against him a little, despite how nervous she was to be so close to him. He was being so nice. She nodded, following his lead when he mentioned ice cream, in the kitchen. "Sounds like a good plan to me." She jumped when he barked at some younger students, swallowing hard, but he was still being nice to her ... this was so weird. What was going on?

He continued to lead her onward, vowing to kick Riley in the face the next time he saw him. He'd kick Priscilla too but he wasn't sure about doing that to a girl. He'd probably get in way more trouble if he did. As they headed toward the kitchen he relaxed a little from his annoyance with Kinseys tormentors. "Everything will be fine, Kins. Once we graduate we can move to France like we always wanted and avoid everyone we knew here," he promised. He turned to kiss the top of her head and then, as they turned the next corner, be saw a jinx flying their way. He shfited in front of her, letting the yellow blast hit him instead. The kids who were tossing jinxes around went pale. "That's DOMINIC dippet, you idiot!" one called, then the three kids ran off. Dom shook his head, muttering the counter spell your the jinx - which was making his feet grow in size.

Having Dom's arm around her shoulder felt so strange and unfamiliar, but at the same time it was a little comforting in an odd way. For the last six years he'd been tormenting her, dragging her down. Something was obviously wrong here, but it was nice. Nice to not feel fear and horror when he touched her. She tried to hide her surprise when he started talking again, telling her that everything would be fine and that the two of them would be going to France, where they could get away from everyone here. They had plans? To get away from everyone and be alone together? No, something had to be wrong here. There was no way Dominic Dippet wanted to be alone in a foreign country with her. She cringed slightly when he kissed the top of her head, her confusion rising again. What game was he playing at? When they turned the corner, some sort of jinx was heading toward them. It would have hit Kinsey (that much was obvious) but Dom moved so he took it for her. Kinsey's eyes widened as she watched the kids run away and Dom quietly mutter a counter curse. Suddenly it all clicked. This wasn't real. Somehow this was an incredibly lifelike dream, or nightmare. That wasn't the real Dom or Toby or even Riley. Dom never would have taken a jinx for her. Without another thought, Kinsey turned on her heel and ran away from him, hoping that he wouldn't be able to follow her. She wasn't entirely sure she could handle it if she did. Dom being nice to her was just too much. The tears started falling from her eyes again and she made her way to a quiet corner in the castle. Okay, she knew it wasn't real now. Why wasn't she waking up? She pinched herself, but nothing happened. "Okay, wake up," she muttered to herself, but nothing. What kind of a dream was this? She tried using a few spells to wake herself up, but none of them worked. It wasn't long before she saw people- old friends- walking by and sneering at her, muttering little comments about her. Kinsey covered her ears and closed her eyes, telling herself to wake up over and over. After what seemed like hours, she suddenly jolted awake, sweaty and tangled asleep in the sheets of her bed, tears streaming down her face. What just happened? It took her a while to compose herself enough to wake up, but that was to find that she'd slept the day away. She missed all of her classes and dinner was in half an hour. Even worse, for all that sleep, she felt like she hadn't gotten any. She was exhausted and confused and she needed to find Toby. She set off in search of her best friend almost immediately. --- the end ---
