Hearing Rory talk about those kids he helped kind of made her wish that she had known him at that age. She hadn’t seen him go through his awkward phase with acne. Or hear his voice change from the higher, childlike voice she knew so well into the voice that she was hearing now. She hadn’t seen any of that, and of course, that wasn’t something they talked about in their letters. “well hopefully there won’t be too many people needing our help. Hopefully things won’t be as crazy as they were…” hopefully she never needed his help. Lee has been injured in battle before, but she knew better. She was wise and she was strong. Hopefully it never came to that.

Rory nodded, though his expression grew more serious as Alyra spoke. As much as he hated the idea of more people getting hurt, he was expecting it to happen. After all the attacks the past few years, it hardly seemed like those were about to stop. Now there were convicts running around England, and while his best friend was looking for them, the whole concept made Rory feel uneasy. Things were getting worse, and he didn't know how long it would be until they got better again. He nodded. "Yeah, I hope it doesn't get much worse." He hesitated a second. He didn't want to annoy her or seem like he didn't think she could take care of herself, but Alyra was his best friend and Rory wanted to be sure she'd be okay. "Just make sure you're careful, okay?" he asked hesitantly.

Rory seemed to feel the same way that she did about the nature of the current political climate here. He echoed her hopes that it didn’t get any worse and then asked her to make sure that she was careful. “of course. Though it’s always handy to have an in with a first responder.” she teased, giving a wink. Lee had finished her meal and looked up at the clock on the wall. “oh it’s nearly 11:40. Where do you want to go to watch the fireworks?” she asked. They had talked about doing that hadn’t they? She knew there was a grand display in London on the river somewhere tonight.

He knew it was silly, but Rory definitely felt relieved that Alyra planned on being safe, and that she wasn't offended by his suggestion. He smiled and chuckled along with her. "Yeah, of course. If you ever need help, or think you might after a job or something, just let me know." He wanted to be there for her. If something happened and Alyra got hurt, Rory wanted to be the one to take care of her and make sure she was all right. He didn't want to leave that to someone else to do. He jumped when she mentioned the time. "Oh yeah! I have a place. Come on, let's go into the alleyway." His "place" was the rooftop of the apartment where he lived, but it had a great view of the city. Once they got outside, he took her hand and pulled her into the dark alleyway before apparating them to his place. He smiled, "Here, come right over here," Rory suggested, leading her to a blanket he'd laid out in hopes that she'd want to come here with him.

Rory said that she should let him know if she ever needed him or even just thought that she might and she just gave him a friendly wink in response. Of course she would let him know, but it wasn’t really something she wanted to talk about right now. Not on New Years Eve at a nice restaurant like they were at now. He pulled her out of the restaurant when they were done and lead her to another place, a building. They went up the stairs to the rooftop and to Lees surprise, there was already a blanket there, waiting for them. “did you set this up?” she asked.

Alyra didn't question anything when Rory led her away from the restaurant and to the rooftop, which was something he was glad for. In all honesty, he was a little bit embarrassed about the whole thing anyway. They were friends, sure, they'd been friends their whole lives, but the whole set up seemed kind of romantic and he wasn't sure if she'd be okay with that. It wasn't even his intention! He just wanted to have a good time with his best friend and show her the best view on New Year's. He nodded, trying to stay cool, when she asked if he set it up. "Yeah. I've seen a lot of New Year's fireworks here since graduating Hogwarts and stuff and this is my favorite view. I kinda thought you might like to see it ... but it can get kinda uncomfortable so I thought a blanket might help." He shrugged, trying to play down the fact that he'd put so much thought into this. He wanted Alyra to like it and to enjoy her time with him.
He heard a sudden boom and jumped, looking to the sky. "It's starting. Come on, let's sit down," Rory encouraged, moving to the blanket so he could sit down and hoping she wouldn't mind following him.

A thought flickered across Lees mind when he said that he had set this up for her to make her comfortable. Was he trying to impress her? The blanket and the amount of thought that he had obviously put into this evening had her curious. She followed him over to the blanket and looked at the view from the roof as they got closer to the edge. “this is a great place.” She Insisted. She looked over at him. “thank you for tonight.” she said softly.

Rory sat on the blanket, looking up at the sky instead of at his best friend. He figured- after knowing her for so long- that this was the kind of thing Alyra would enjoy, but he wasn't entirely sure. When she spoke, Rory felt himself relax as he turned to look at her, "Thanks. I've tried a few, but I like this one the most." He was glad she enjoyed it. She thanked him and Rory smiled over at her, "Of course. I'm glad you like it, Alyra." Then he smirked a little, "Are the fireworks in California bigger than this?" He heard that the Americans liked to go crazy with their fireworks, but he was curious to hear it from her.

Rory sat down and Lee followed his lead, making herself as comfortable as she could be in her dress. She wasn’t as dressed up as she could be, but it was definitely more than usual. Lee never wore dresses unless she was trying to dress up. She couldn’t wear them on the job and just felt like they weren’t entirely right for her daily style. Jeans suited her better. Or slacks if she was in the office and trying to make a good impression like she was this past week. But likely wouldn’t be again. She wasn’t there to impress. She was there to work.
Rory nodded when she thanked him and said that he was glad she liked it. Then he looked out and asked if the fireworks in California were bigger than this. She nodded. “they’re crazy. But they have to be watched closely because it’s so dry down there that fires are common.” Summer Fire season was the worst. Mostly because wizards were forbidden from any interference. Though they could be put out so much quicker with magic.

Rory tried to not stare at Alyra when she moved to sit down beside him. He didn't want to creep her out or make her feel uncomfortable or anything, but she was so beautiful. It still didn't feel real to him that she was here, in England. That she was sitting on this rooftop with him, watching the New Year's firework show. His eyes widened, "Even during the winter? I don't know if I could deal with that kind of heat year-round." Maybe it was just because he grew up here, but Rory much preferred cold weather to hot weather. He looked over at her. "Do you miss it there?" Sure, she'd already been gone a few days, but he was curious.

Rory asked about the weather in the winter and Lee shrugged. “it gets a little cooler in the winter months. It’s usually in the 50s of 60s.” at least where she was from near the ocean. The wind chill kept it all pretty nice. But the sun was her favorite. “I don’t think I could deal with the rain all year round.” she teased. And then she nodded. “I miss it a lot. But it’s kind of cool being here. At least with me here the girls get to go to school.” she shrugged. She probably would have transferred over at the start of the year if she knew the girls could go to school if she was here.

Alyra explained a bit more about the weather during the winter and Rory found himself nodding. 50s and 60s didn't sound too bad, though it made him wonder how hot things got in the summer. Too hot for him, he was sure. He shrugged, "You get used to the rain, but there are times when it goes away and we get the sun." Not super often, but it did happen from time to time. Rory enjoyed those days too. She admitted to missing her home, but that it was cool here and ... the girls? Rory frowned, "The girls?" His heart started pounding in his chest. Was she somehow married or something? Or did she get married and divorced and never told him? He could hardly think logically right now.

Rory said that sometimes the rain went away and Lee laughed. “I lived here for 8 years remember? All I remember weather wise is rain.” she was sure her memories were being very dramatic. But still. They had to come from somewhere. He asked about the girls and Lee wondered if maybe that wasn’t something she should have brought up. “while I’m here I’ve got two kids in my custody. My sister Mazie, I told you about her, and another young girl. Her name is Chrissy. She’s an orphan and the MACUSA wouldn’t let her come without a guardian…” she explained. She had temporarily adopted the girl.

Rory rolled his eyes, "You lived here for 8 years forever ago. You don't remember every single day," he teased. There was a lot of rain here, but that wasn't the only weather. It had to be better than scorching heat, didn't it? He listened carefully as she explained about having 2 girls in her custody. Relief flooded through him when she explained that Mazie was one of them. Okay, that definitely made sense. "Oh, that's cool," he answered when se explained a little more about the orphan, Chrissy. "So they're both at school and you're their guardian for now?" Was it possible for him to admire Alyra even more than he already did? "That's a lot of responsibility, I'm sure they both really appreciate you."

A weird flood of relief fled over Lee when Rory didn’t seem too freaked out about her having two girls in her custody. That was nice. Though she wasn’t sure why it mattered so much to her that he didn’t mind. “yeah. Well education is important and so as soon as I found out I was coming here I got both of them as quickly as I could. Before I even packed. I actually forgot to pack almost everything and had to buy so much when I got here because the 24 hours I had were all focused on the girls…” she admitted, feeling a little silly about it. She nodded, “yeah it’s a definitely a lot. But I’d do it again. Anytime.” she decided.
