Mazie was actually having a better time at this dance than she expected. After starting the whole thing with a shift in her reality and expectations toward her best friend, she'd found distractions. Mazie was good and experienced when it came to flirting. She put on her happy face and approached anyone and everyone that she saw. Lots of guys danced with her and she smiled and laughed while in their arms, trying to force herself not to search for Jack every time she stopped dancing with someone. She didn't want to see him with that girl again. It was hard enough the first time. So she distracted herself the best way she knew how. When most people seemed busy, she made her way to the refreshments, which seemed to be replenishing themselves. (thank you, house elves!) Mazie took a glass, but wasn't much in the mood for punch, so she pulled out her wand and conjured some nice, cold water for herself. She smiled and watched all the dancing, chatting people while she drank. Then she threw the cup away and started walking around, searching for some more fun. She couldn't have what she wanted from this dance, but that didn't mean she couldn't enjoy herself. JOHN ELLIOT CLARK Mazie's Dress

Jack was having a great time at this dance so far. It was a nice night and there were so many people out. He had danced with Anna, a good friend of his, and he had a few treats and drinks from the refreshment table. He was pretty sure that there was something in the punch and he was starting to feel that a little more now, but it was mostly just causing him to have an even better time. As he walked around the room, his face lit up when he saw Mazie. He hadn’t seen her all night and he was hoping that she would come. She hadn’t seen him and was turned away from him so he walked up to her, appearing by her side before he smirked, “Well hey there pretty girl.” Maybe he had a little more of the punch than he thought.

Mazie sighed as she looked around. Most people seemed like they were already busy at the moment, which was a shame. Still, Mazie could be patient when it meant having a good time. She jumped, spinning around when she heard the familiar voice at her shoulder. An instant smile covered her face and her stomach twisted. He’d found her. Where was his friend from earlier? She tried to push her racing thoughts away. Jack found her and she definitely wanted to enjoy her time with him. ”Well hello, handsome stranger,” she answered back in the same tone. ”Have you been enjoying yourself?” She wanted him to say that he hadn’t until he found her, but Mazie knew that wasn’t going to happen. She’d seen him with that other girl. She wasn’t going to let him know that though. JOHN ELLIOT CLARK

Mazie called him handsome and Jack felt a lot of personal pride in that. Even if she was just being silly or teasing him. She still said it. It counted. He was pretty sure. She asked if he was having a good time and he shrugged. “Yeah it’s been a good night. This is a great party. Have you been here long? Oh hey have you tried the punch yet?” he asked. He wasn’t sure what was in it, but he was certain that there was something. It was fairly normal at Ilvermrony parties that someone would spike the punch also, he figured teenagers were teenagers no matter where they were.

Jack seemed pleased to have found her, which was a relief to Mazie. At least he hadn’t forgotten her entirely. Then again, she didn’t really expect him to forget her for the whole dance. She wasn’t sure what she expected anymore. She smiled when he shrugged, saying it was good. He had to be downplaying his enjoyment, but she didn’t argue. ”I’ve thought so too. Yeah, I’ve been here almost since it started,” she answered with a smile. Obviously the party wasn’t quite what she’d expected, but she had fun anyway. She tilted her head to the side when he asked about the punch, a small giggle escaping her. ”No, should I? Is this punch special?” Mazie teased, unable to help herself. JOHN ELLIOT CLARK

Mazie admitted that she was having fun and that she had been here just about since the party started. He felt bad that he had just now found her then, he’d been on his own just about this whole time. Who else would he want to spend time with at something like this than her? Mazie was everything to him. What? That was new. Jack shook his head a little, clearing his thoughts. Maybe it was the punch talking. “Uh kind of.” He said with a shrug and a laugh when she asked if it was special. She had to assume that someone would do something to it. At least they were old enough to drink in this country so it wasn’t like they were doing anything weird or illegal. “I’m pretty sure it’s not just punch.” he was more than pretty sure, but trying to downplay that.

Mazie couldn't help but laugh when Jack didn't answer her question of whether or not she should try it. When he brought it up, she kind of assumed that it wasn't just normal punch, but him saying so was definitely cute. "Oooh, I guess I should definitely give it a try then, huh?" She said with a wink, looking back over to the refreshment table and starting to make her way there. "Are you going to come with me? Or did you just find me to tell me that the punch is worth it?" Mazie teased, a knot it her stomach when she spoke. What? This was Jack! She shouldn't be nervous that he wouldn't follow her, that he'd rather look for someone else. He wouldn't have approached her if he didn't want to do something with her. At least, she didn't think he would. She still watched him, waiting to see what he'd do. JOHN ELLIOT CLARK

She asked if she should try it and Jack shrugged. It was completely up to her, and he wouldn’t force her into anything. He wasn’t that kind of guy. He shrugged. “If you wannah.” he rolled his eyes when she asked if he was going to go with her or if he was just telling her about it. “I think I’m going to get myself another, so yeah I’ll come with you.” he scoffed. He knew she was teasing him, but come on? Why would he tell her about it and not offer to get her some or to go with her to get some. He wasn’t going to come up to her just to say something and then run off somewhere. “Shall we?” he asked, offering her his arm.

Jack wasn't really being very helpful at all, but even so Mazie still listened to him. He said she could get a drink if she wanted to. Well, duh. She knew he wasn't about to force-feed her punch. She'd mostly just asked that to see what he'd say. "Oh, I'll try some. Wouldn't be the first time," she added with a wink. Drinks at Ilvermorny rarely ended up being what they were supposed to be too. He agreed to join her and Mazie smiled up at him, her smile widening into a grin when he offered his arm. "Yes, we shall," she said, with a proper imitation of a British accent as she took it. Goosebumps ran up her arm, but she hoped he wouldn't notice. She loved being this close to Jack. Even when it was just him being polite and leading her across the room. Man, she was pathetic. Could she be any more obvious? They made their way across the room to the punch and she took a glass, smiling over at him as she lifted it, nodded and then took a swallow of the punch. Yup, that definitely wasn't just punch. Mazie looked over at Jack, not entirely sure what to say now, so she took another sip. JOHN ELLIOT CLARK

Jack wiggled his eyebrows when she said that she’d try it and it wouldn’t be the first time. He was pretty used to this type of thing between Ilvermorny parties and the ones that happened thus far at Hogwarts. The social aspect of school was the best part of it all, especially since there wasn’t quadpot here. It was a loss, really. Jack missed the chance to get to play during his last year. She took his arm, imitating a British accent while she did so. He laughed and rolled his eyes. He walked her over, taking off his mask as he did so. It wasn’t really something he liked. A cowboy didn’t wear a mask. He wasn’t afraid of being spotted. “So you been dancing at all?” he asked.

At least she had him laughing and smiling. Even if Jack really did like some other girl, at least Mazie could still make sure he enjoyed his time with her. She didn't care if it meant doing ridiculous things. Honestly, Mazie would do crazy things if it kept the people she cared about interested in her ... which might not be a good thing, but it was definitely the truth. She wanted to always have fun with her friends and for them to have fun around her. Jack was, of course, at the top of that list. He asked if she danced at all and Mazie glanced over to him with a smirk and a shrug, "Wouldn't you want to know?" she teased. "I happened to notice you having fun dancing with a few people ..." Mazie laughed, definitely trying to make it seem like that wasn't a big deal. "You mean to say you didn't notice me with anyone earlier?" Okay, so she might be doing a little digging now. Mazie wanted to know if Jack noticed her before he approached her a few minutes ago. Not that it would change anything, she was just curious. "I will say that I haven't been asked to dance by any charming cowboys," she added with a wink, hoping he would take the hint. They hadn't danced since the night she joined him here, and while she definitely didn't expect Jack to kiss her here, she did want to dance with him. JOHN ELLIOT CLARK

Mazie didn’t answer him right away, which he couldn’t help but think was fair given he still hadn’t told her how he found out about the secret passage was and she had to be keeping that one in her head for future use. But then she brought up that she had seen him dancing with a few people. His cheeks went a little redder than usual. He shrugged, “what can I say, I’m a popular guy.” he smirked down at her, teasing more than actually meaning what he was saying. Even if he was popular and well liked, he wasn’t the type to actually brag about it. She asked if he hadn’t seen her dancing with anyone and he shrugged. “I guess that’s the point of the masks right, we’re not really supposed to notice one another across a room.” he felt a little badly for not noticing her sooner, but there wasn’t anything he could do about it now. “Well would you like to dance? Unless you were talking about another charming cowboy, in which case, I might have to go battle.” he teased. He knew she was talking about him, and he was getting to it, there was no way to be subtle with Mazie.

Mazie couldn't keep herself from smiling and she and Jack talked and teased. It honestly wasn't anything new, since they always behaved this way with one another and it always made her happy, but now that she realized how she felt about him, she felt more self-conscious about it. She still grinned at his comment about being popular, nodding her head knowingly, even though she was fully aware that he was joking around. "Don't I know it!" She answered back instantly. "One of these days you're gonna get so busy with your groupies that you'll forget all about little ol' me," Mazie teased with a wink. Sure, that might be a valid concern of hers after seeing him with that girl, but Mazie would never tell him so. She chuckled and nodded when he answered her question, confirming that he hadn't noticed her before now. It hurt, but she didn't want him to know that. She didn't want to make Jack feel guilty for something he couldn't control. Her feelings were her problem, not his and she wasn't going to burden him with them. Then he was asking her to dance, teasing about fighting for her and Mazie let her spirits brighten. She didn't want to let things get too serious now. She wanted to have fun with him. "Oooooh, you'd go to battle for me?! Wow I feel honored," she teased right back before sighing dramatically. "I guess it's a good thing you don't have to though, because you're definitely my charming cowboy." Wait. That's not how she meant it to come out! Mazie's mind raced, but she just smiled and stepped closer to him, trying to distract him from the blush creeping onto her cheeks now. "And I'd love to dance with you, Jack." She would never deny him a dance. JOHN ELLIOT CLARK

Mazie commented that one day he was going to get so carried away with his groupies and forget all about her. He scoffed even though he knew she was teasing. That would never happen. Jack never forgot about his friends, he was a good person, a kind soul, and a friendly type of guy. Though he wondered, based on her comment, if she had thought that he had spent the last term at Hogwarts trying to replace her. He’d have to make sure she didn’t feel that way. She commented about feeling honored that he would battle of her and he wiggled his eyebrows. Though he meant more than he would have to battle for the title of charming cowboy, but she didn’t need to know that. He liked making her happy. “Well good. I’m glad someone appreciated me.” he winked when she said that he was her charming cowboy. He held out his hand to her and escorted her onto the dance floor. Whether she had meant it in the way that she said it or not, he didn’t know. They were friends, he had definitely called her his before, but he hadn’t meant it in a romantic way. Surely she hadn’t either. This was still Mazie. Mazie didn’t date. Surely she wouldn't start now.

Jack scoffed at her teasing, making Mazie laugh even more. She loved his reactions to her teasing, how more often than not he'd just roll his eyes and drop it. Him doing that always made her laugh. She rolled her eyes when he said he was glad someone appreciated him. "Jack Hatfield, I have always appreciated you. I don't see that stopping now." She grinned, placing her hand in his and letting him lead her out to the dance floor. The last time they danced ... it was perfect. Mazie wasn't sure if any other dance could possibly compare. In the middle of the dancefloor, she had a momentary second of panic when she realized she didn't know where to put her hands! What if he wanted to dance the way they had in the Room of Requirement, or would he want to keep things more proper here? Mazie didn't know and indecision tore at her for a second until she just lifted her free hand to his shoulder, waiting to see what he did with the hand he was holding. If he released it, then that meant he wanted her to put it on his shoulder, right? If he kept hold of it, then they'd dance the way they normally did. She looked up at him, smiling. "Soooo did you get that invitation to the party next week?" She asked. Mazie was never good at staying silent. JOHN ELLIOT CLARK
