New Year's Eve was finally here and Ashley Fontaine couldn't be more excited. Eli was supposed to come and she couldn't wait to see him and spend the evening with him. She didn't even care about any of her other guests. Once she saw him, she'd pay them no attention. She was in such a good mood, she even told Joe about him. Of course, she didn't tell her brother that she liked him or anything, she just told him that her friend Eli was coming. Ashley spent a special amount of time making sure she looked nice tonight. Her parents got her a red dress the other day and she loved it. The dress was about knee length with three quarter sleeves made out of lace. She had her makeup done to match it, of course, and her hair was down and in curls, the way she thought Eli liked best, but she wasn't sure. Either way, she felt pretty and all ready for the party. She first waited outside, until she saw Sav Macmillan arrive. It was easy to talk to the other guy while she was waiting for Eli. She even danced with him once, trying to distract herself from her rising nerves. What if Eli changed his mind and decided he didn't want to come? What if he hadn't healed enough from the attack the other day and his parents didn't let him come? Once Sav left her, Ashley's eyes scanned the crowd, searching for the familiar head of dark brown hair, but she didn't see him. Ashley tried to smile and greet people, but her heart was sinking by the moment. Eli was nowhere to be found. Elijah Theron Fleming Ashley's Dress

THE PORTKEY THAT TOOK ELI TO THE FONTAINE home was not the only reason his stomach was in knots. His hands sweating as his shoulder was jostled by a group of party-goers, all laughing and smelling of expensive perfume. Eli had never felt less like he belonged. Each person who entered wearing something glittering, or alive. Eli was hiding a cut on the back of his head, and he'd been in hospital just a few days ago. It was funny how it felt like a lifetime once he stepped inside the large, decadent venue.
"Could I interest you in a glass of champagne-" The waiter had a very large, gleaming silver tray and Eli's upper body leaned away instinctively as they moved in to his space. He'd barely stepped through the door and it was shoved under his nose, before the waiter took one look at him - head-to-toe and then turned the tray to reveal a brand new ring of glasses. "Or, perhaps a tongue-tying lemonade..." Eli was mute as he grabbed the glass of fizzy lemon, it slippy in his clammy palms. He mumbled a thanks and felt utterly out of place.
With the glass cooling his palm, Eli strained his head over the crowds. Hot under the collar as he sipped it gingerly. It was utterly delicious and it took Eli a moment of peering in to the glass to realise there were little flecks of gold in it. He snorted in to the glass, marvelling at the luxury of it and how his father would throw a fit at such a blatant display of wealth. But, Eli wasn't worried about that. He just wanted to find Ash.
After the attack, it had taken a full day before he'd fully remembered what had happened. And he'd been right, it wasn't Ashley's fault. He wanted to tell her that again, to her face, now that he was feeling more like himself again. Plus, he'd remembered something else. Not with full clarity, but enough to fill him with an intense feeling of purpose. In his haze, before the healer had come to his aide and just after the dragon had tossed him, Ashley's voice came to him. She had told him she liked him, far more than he'd ever been sure. He wanted to make sure, on the off chance that it had been real, that she knew he felt the same way. New Years was for new beginnings. He had no excuse any more.
However, as Eli nursed his lemonade and searched for Ashley he found her among those on the dance floor. A tall, handsome stranger was waltzing her around the room and Ashley was laughing. He smiled at the sight of her, her blonde hair falling in soft, buttery curls. Offset by the deep red of her dress. He wanted that to be him dancing with her, but he couldn't interrupt. A yawning pit of disappointment opened within him and he backed out of the crowd, suddenly claustrophobic. He wasn't giving up. Just... getting some air.
Eli found the balcony out of sheer desperation. The heavy doors pulling free to reveal the cityscape sprawled before him. And, while the party raged behind closed doors, he leaned on the stone barrier and let the wind chill his face. This wasn't 'their' night and he couldn't hide forever, but what if she didn't feel the same way? Alone, he felt doubt creep in until finally he forced himself to step back in to the mess of it. He'd say hello, like he promised and whatever happened next was simply meant to be.
With his back pressed against the door, he let his eyes find the spot he'd seen Ashley first, but he found her before that. And, finally, she was alone. He lifted a hand, pasting his best smile in place and hoping his hair wasn't too much of a mess from the wind. His glass of lemonade was empty. "Hey..." He mouthed to her with a wave, but stayed in place, waiting. People were trying to get her attention from all sides. She was like the sun, and every guest in the room revolved around her like planets.

With every minute that passed, Ashley's excitement for the evening dwindled. Eli wasn't coming. He couldn't be coming, everyone was here by now, weren't they? She danced when people asked her to, being the perfect hostess she was raised to be. She smiled and laughed, but her stomach was in knots and all Ashley wanted to do was leave and go to her room. She just wanted to get away from all these people and go somewhere she could be alone to mourn the fact that Eli hadn't come. He had to be mad at her for what happened at Hogsmeade. Maybe that was why he wasn't coming? Still, Ashley couldn't keep her eyes from scanning the room whenever she had a chance, though by now she wasn't really hoping for anything anymore. Eli couldn't be coming. She couldn't hope for that anymore. Her eyes passed over him at first, then she froze and her eyes met his and she saw him smiling from across the room. An instant, delighted smile covered her face. He was here! Granted, there was a part of her that assumed she made it up, that she was imagining him there, but there was only one way to know for sure. She held up one finger, silently asking him to stay where she was as she turned and smiled at the people around her. "Sorry, I've got to go. Yes, it's nice to see you. I'll be back in a bit." Yeah right. If Eli was actually here, Ashley was going to spend the rest of the evening with him. Once she broke free from the people around her, she looked to Eli again, grinning as she saw him. Ashley made her way around the dance floor quickly, nodding to people, but mostly just looking at Eli. "Eli, you made it!" She hurried to close the space between them and threw her arms around his shoulders. "I thought you might not be able to come," she admitted quietly, holding him tightly for a moment. She pulled back, meeting his eyes with hers. "Hey, how are you? You feel better from the other day?" Ashley just wanted to hear his voice. That's all she wanted. That, and to spend the rest of the part with him. If he wanted to be with her. Elijah Theron Fleming

FOR A MOMENT ELI HAD TUNNEL VISION. ALL HE could see was Ashley and her flouncing red dress. The buzz of noise and laughter dulled, his body frozen in place. He didn't know what to do with his hand and by the time she reached him he had them clasped in front of him like a door-to-door salesman. He unclasped them and shook them out, giving a slight laugh with nervousness. But, soon enough she had thrown her arms around him and he had something to do. He pulled her towards his chest and sighed, feeling something unravel in his gut.
"Yeah..." He breathed, his burdening uncertainty easing at her appearance. "Couldn't miss it." They let go of one and other, almost reluctantly on Eli's part, especially since he had to think of what to do with his hands again. They hung at his sides, lifeless and itching. "I mean, it's a Fortescue party." He shrugged like it was nothing, like that had anything to do with his appearance. "That's a once in a lifetime opportunity." His face pulled in to a smirk so she knew he was joking. Eli wasn't there for the status. He was there for Ashley.
Instinctively, Eli reached for the back of his head when Ash mentioned his fall. His face screwed up and he shook his head. "I'm fine!" He reassured her, feeling silly even if his head was still a little tender to the touch. "You saved me." He cast his eyes down to her, making light of it with a toothy grin. His body language loose and relaxed now that he was in good company. "Plus, I gotta see a real dragon.... in the flesh." His grin grew, an undeniable glint in his eyes. "Totally worth it."

He was here. Eli was finally here, which she believed when she felt his arms wrap around her and pull her close. She couldn't be imagining this, right? She didn't want the hug to end, didn't want to move out of his arms, but Ashley didn't think she could just stay there. He was expecting her to do things with him, right? At least to pull back and talk to him. She rolled her eyes when he teased about the party. "It doesn't have to be, you know. I mean, I'm pretty sure I can get invitations for my best friend whenever I want them," she teased with a smirk. Merlin, she liked him. She couldn't help the flirting. "I mean ... as long as my best friend wants to come over," Ash amended with a shrug. She wanted him to want to come, to want to spend time with her. Eli insisted that he was fine, reminding her that she saved him. Ashley smiled softly, "Only after you saved me first," she answered. If he hadn't pulled her out of the dragon's way, she wouldn't have been around to save him. She rolled her eyes. "I'm sure we could have found a safer way to see dragons, Eli. Was that really your highlight of the trip?" Why was she asking that? He was obviously delighted by the chance to see a dragon. What else could he have enjoyed more? Ashley knew what she wanted to be his favorite part, but she wasn't going to let herself think about it. That could hurt too much. Elijah Theron Fleming

ELI FOUND HIS FACE WARM UNDER ASH'S KEEN attention. 'Best friend', the word fizzed through him like a fizzing whizbee, foaming at the back of his throat until he coughed a laugh. It was close to how he'd thought of her for so long, her mischievous eyes making him shift from foot to foot. Were they best friends? As close as could be. Did he want to be more? Most definitely.
"Well, I'm here, right?" Eli replied with a crooked smile, rubbing the end of his nose nervously. He looked at her, trying to figure out if she was being serious. Did she honestly think he'd rather be anywhere else? He'd go wherever she wanted. Do whatever she pleased. He truly was at her mercy and she had no idea.
"I guess we're even then," Eli said easily, far removed from the panic and uncertainty of the events that transpired at Hogsmeade. That was the good thing about Eli, he tended not to dwell on things - big or small. And though that sometimes meant that he struggled to process his true feelings, it also made him extremely good at bouncing back. Like that time he nearly failed out of school.
"Absolutely!" Eli exclaimed, his brows pulling together at the surprise on Ash's face. "Gotta look on the bright side, right?" He grabbed her hand and pulled her towards the doors where the music thumped inside. His body buzzing with the desire to move, to do something. "We're alive, this is your party, and we're hiding on the balcony!" He sent her a look of incredulity. His previous feelings of misplacement stored away for another day. The music grew incredibly loud once they were out on the main floor. Lights and waiting staff bobbing around various dancing figures.
"C'mon," He said, turning her in to a clumsy spin that almost resulted in them crashing in to a passing couple. "We should dance!" Soon it would be midnight and he'd leave again, ushered back to reality. To his stern, flaky father, and his nervous-minded little brother. To a life he'd rather pretend wasn't his own for just a moment.

Ashley grinned when Eli smiled at her, saying that he was here. That was a good point. He wouldn't have come if he didn't want to, right? "Yes! And I'm so glad you are," she answered enthusiastically. Something about having Eli here after she'd decided he wouldn't show had her almost giddy with happiness. Out of all the places he could be tonight, he was here, with her. Eli said they were even and Ashley's eyes widened. She hadn't thought of it like that before, but she kind of liked it. It helped her to feel less guilty, the realization that he saved her just like she saved him. She smiled and nodded firmly, "Even," she echoed, loving the way that word helped remove her guilt. Of course the dragons would be the highlight of the trip. Honestly, she shouldn't be surprised by that at all. Ashley was in the middle of rolling her eyes at Eli when he grabbed her hand and started pulling her inside, saying something about looking on the bright side. Ashley laughed, not quite sure what he was doing until he mentioned that they were hiding on the balcony. "Okay, okay! I'm moving on and looking at the bright side," she answered as she followed him onto the main floor. Was he really going to dance with her? Ashley buzzed with excitement at the idea. He spun her and she almost crashed into a couple that was dancing by, but Ashley simply laughed it off. She was in Eli's arms. They were dancing together and she was determined to enjoy the moment. Enjoy it and memorize it so she'd be able to enjoy it whenever she wanted to. "I didn't know you could dance," she lied. They'd danced before, at Ilvermorny. She'd almost kissed him that time. Then again, there were so many times when she almost kissed him that wasn't really a new thing or a surprise. Ashley moved to dancing position with Eli, "I'd tell you to show me how good of a dancer you are, but you already did that," she teased, smiling up at him. Her smile softened a little, "I'm glad I get to dance with you again." She was glad for any excuse to be close to him. Elijah Theron Fleming

ELI WAS A LITTLE UNSURE OF HIMSELF AS HE pulled Ashley on to the floor for a dance. But, her beaming enthusiasm made him feel a little better about it. He was nervous, had felt utterly out of place upon his arrival. But, lately, Ashley was just always so happy to see him. It made Eli feel instantly better about coming. She wanted him here, what more could he ask for.
"I can... sort of dance." Eli laughed, recalling how they'd done this before on far more informal terms. He'd preferred that, but this would do too. Clasping her hand in his he swayed with the music, his other hand a little sweaty when he placed it on the curve of her waist. This was how it was done, right?
"I'm not, like an expert or anything." He smiled bashfully over her head, repressing the urge to laugh. "Honestly, I just wanted an excuse to get you out here." He dropped his gaze to meet hers, a sheepish smile in place. "Writing letters it's... it's not the same as seeing you, you know?" He shrugged his shoulders, his toe brushing against hers as he almost stepped on them, before shifting back discreetly.

Ashley could hardly believe this was happening. Only a few minutes ago, she'd thought that Eli wasn't going to come. Now, he was here and he was pulling her out to dance. Could that possibly mean that he liked her? Or did he just want to fit in and do what a bunch of other people were doing? Ashley couldn't tell, but she was going to enjoy this and try to memorize every second. Then she could remember it, no matter what ended up happening between her and Eli. She laughed when he said he could sort of dance, moving to hold her in dance position. She lifted her free hand to place it on his shoulder, smiling up at him. Man, he looked so handsome to her right now. "I know. I was just teasing before," she told him softly. Eli just wanted to get her out here? Ashley's smile widened as she looked up at him. "I would've given you an excuse no matter what. I wasn't about to let you leave without dancing with me first," she teased. "I mean, I did say that I'd save you a dance." She nodded at his comment. "It isn't the same, and seeing you is way better than writing letters." Ashley lowered her gaze for a minute. "I've missed you during the break, even though I got to see you ... is that pathetic?" her voice was soft, and Ashley slowly looked up at him again, not noticing anyone around them as they danced together. THERE COULD HAVE BEEN NO MUSIC OR FANFARE, Eli wouldn't have noticed. He swayed to a beat in his own head, barely moving as he simply looked down at Ashley and beamed, his cheeks creased. He was glad he came, even if he had been a nervous wreck. It was worth it, because she was so happy to see him.
"Suppose I'm trapped," He joked, turning them slightly, but not quite brave enough to risk a spin just yet. He was better at the flailing, beatless kind of dancing. The sort that guaranteed injury. This was different, it was intimate. He was sweating under his collar. "Right?" He exclaimed, pleased that Ashley agreed with him. "It's like- half a conversation." He muttered, twitching his nose slightly as he thought. "I don't say half as much as I wanna because writing, it's so boring. It's..." He scrunched his face, worried he sounded dumb. Shaking his head, he laughed slightly and adjusted his grip on her waist, his thumb rubbing against the satin-y fabric.
"It's not patheitc," Eli muttered, a warmth filling his chest until he thought it might burst. "It's the best thing I've heard all night." And that, he knew, sounded so corny but it was true. His doubts were unfathomable, his fear nowhere to be seen. He'd decided. He was definitely going to kiss Ashley Fontaine at midnight. He swore it to himself, his chin lifting as he caught sight of the extravagant countdown hanging from the ceiling. Not much longer to go now. He took in a deep, steadying breath and finally guided Ashley in to a spin using their clasped hands. A little awkwardly, but sincere, laughing as he did.

Ashley smiled up at Eli, just happy that he was here. Granted, she was even happier that he was holding her and smiling down at her. It was like one of her dreams come true, though in her dream he would definitely kiss her while it couldn't happen in real life (at least, she didn't think it could). That was fine. She didn't need him to kiss her right now, no matter how much she wished for it. . "I suppose you are," she teased right back at him, glad that he was in such a good mood today. Hopefully tonight would turn out way better than the other day when they were attacked at Hogsmeade and he got hurt. That was not something she ever wanted to repeat. Not the way it ended. The beginning of the date was a different matter entirely. She nodded when he started explaining why he didn't like writing as much as being there in person. "It's not as fun as dancing with me, or doing any of the other things we do in our adventures?" she asked with an easygoing smile. She knew what he meant. While she really wanted to hear from him during vacation, writing was difficult. You could never say everything you wanted and you also couldn't be sure the other person was taking everything the way you wanted them to, which made it a little complicated. "The best thing all night?" Ashley started to tease. "I guess you hadn't heard that they'll be giving out ice cream in a little bit." Which might not be a big deal to him, unless he was starting to like ice cream as much as Ashley did. Still, he was being so sweet. She squeezed his hand a little, "Thanks Eli. You always know just the right thing to say." She let herself focus on the dance with him then, trying to memorize how it felt to be held in his arms and how his movements were nice, even though they weren't even close to perfect. She laughed with him when he spun her around. "Ahh, so now we're starting with the spinning," she teased a little, glancing over to the countdown to midnight. They only had about thirty seconds now. Would he just continue to dance with her or ... would he follow tradition and kiss her. The anticipation ate at her, but in a good way. Definitely a good way. Elijah Theron Fleming

NOT EVEN THE MENTION OF ICE CREAM COULD sway Eli from his intense purpose. He laughed, though, pretending to be pleased, but his mind was preoccupied. One eye pinned to the countdown as they swayed and spun in lazy, dancing circles. Eli would later impress himself with thoughts of how little he stepped on Ash's toe. How easy it was to just hold her and move, as if he'd done it a million times before. It was a miracle, he'd marvel. Good fortune.
However, as the countdown met minutes, Eli dropped his hand from his shoulder. Downward, he wrapped a steady grip on her hand - his palms damp with sweat, tugging her off the dancefloor insistently. "C'mon-" He said in a rush, his expression almost stern. "Balcony- I- the fireworks." He stammered, the idea as plain and obvious in his mind as it was absent in Ash's. "I want to see the fireworks at the bells." He tried to smile, but it was stiff on his face as he pushed the doors open and led her on to the stone expanse.
"Look..." He muttered with a breath, his eyes skittering across to hers nervously. "We got the best view." He pulled her to the parapet, leaning his elbows over and checking the battered watch on his wrist. "Not long now." But he jiggled his leg restlessly anyways, gnawing on the skin on the inside of his cheek. He did not look as it ease as he'd hoped he would.

Eli laughed when she mentioned ice cream, but he didn't change his mind. That wasn't a surprise to Ashley though, and really she wasn't focused on that. She was too busy being focused on the feeling of his arms around her, of the sensation of dancing with him in a room full of people. She didn't care who saw them or that they were swaying. She was too happy to actually be here with him. Suddenly, Eli stopped dancing and took her hand, pulling her off the floor. Ashley followed him, a curious smile on her face. "What-" Then he explained. The fireworks. That made sense. New York fireworks were pretty famous. Why should she be surprised that he would want to see them. He probably hadn't ever been here before. Standing outside, leaning against the railing, Ashley smiled over at Eli. "We do have the best view, except for the one from the roof, but I'm sure Joe's got someone up there, so we've got the next best thing." She laughed lightly, looking out again before glancing over at Eli. Was he okay? He seemed all jittery. She leaned over and touched his hand, a little concerned. "Are you all right?" ELI THOUGHT ABOUT ASH'S TERRIFYING OLDER brother for just a second. It didn't make him change his mind, just sigh with relief that at least he was too preoccupied to wonder where his sister was at her own party. And then, in his creeping insecurity, he felt bad for tearing her away. Casting a look at her from the corner of his eye he saw that she was smiling at him, and tried to relax. She didn't look annoyed, she just kept looking at him.
"I'm fine." Eli answered quietly, edging closer to her, turning his hand and threading his fingers through hers when she reached for him. He smiled back at her, his heart thudding wildly. "Just waiting for the ball to drop." He said evasively, his knee knocking against the wall as he made to jiggle it restlessly. But, Eli knew he couldn't keep up his secrecy for long. He'd never been the subtle type. Ruffling his hair with a heavy sigh, he looked down at their clasped hands and finally shook his head.
"Screw it." He muttered under his breath. And then, with an unearned confidence, Eli turned to Ashley quickly and used his free hand to cup her face. Leaning down in to the space between them and kissing her softly, his thumb glancing over the gentle swell of her cheek. He hadn't kissed her in a very long time, but he'd wanted to. Thought about it, dreamed about it. The waxy taste of her lipstick filling his head with sand as he closed his eyes.

He laced his fingers with hers! Ashley tried to stop the grin from totally overtaking her face, but she didn't feel like she did a very good job at that. She loved how it felt when Eli was holding her hand like that. She chuckled when he mentioned waiting for the ball to drop, her mind not even thinking about kissing anymore. "Well, it's not that big of a deal. The ball drop. I mean, I know people around the muggle world watch it on television, but it's just a ball with a ton of confetti," she answered, rambling a little bit. She didn't even notice. They stared out for a few more seconds before Eli turned to her and cupped her face. Her heart started sputtering as a hopeful smile crept onto her face. Then he was kissing her. Her hand tightened around his, her free hand lifting to rest on his shoulder as she kissed him back. She'd waited for this moment for ages. Part of her wondered if it was even real, if it could possibly be happening, but she shoved that part of her to the side and kissed Eli. She heard everyone start cheering and knew that it was the new year, but she didn't pull away from Eli. She smiled against his lips, letting this last as long as he wanted it to. She was done with all the longing and feeling she wasn't worthy. If he liked her enough to kiss her like this, she could tell him she had feelings for him. Once they were done kissing. She wasn't going to interrupt this just so she could express herself. Elijah Theron Fleming
