“Max, you ready?”
Max was as ready as she would ever be, she supposed, not that she had a great deal of choice in the matter. She didn’t lack confidence in herself, but she did have to question what the ball might do to her. If it wasn’t some orb that Professor Dent had conjured up, she knew too well that it would have been something else… something worse, outside of the relatively safe environment that was Duelling class at Hogwarts.
She nodded with what little time that she had to spare as Lucas Weasley sent the orb towards her.
In an instant, the ball neared her and produced what felt like a gust of wind, which picked up speed with increasing force. Whether it was some sort of tornado or cyclone or whether it had enough force to actually lift her off of the ground, Max didn’t know. What she did know was that she needed to counter it before she could find out. She gripped her wand and hoped that she wasn’t overlooking a better means of defense. “Protego!” she cast, though she worried that it might have no better an effect than opening an umbrella in the wind.
Fortunately, that was enough to subdue the wind, and she waited as it died down. When it was safe enough to retrieve the orb, Max did so, cautiously drawing it closer to herself before sending it off to its next target. She looked around the room.
“Erm… Brígh!”
