april 14, 2025 The morning after the full moon was never kind to Jamie, and this one had been particularly difficult. She and Sienna had done their first round of the experimental Wolfsbane, and the transformation was different. Jamie wasn't sure if it was any better or worse, but the difference had shocked her system and she was still feeling it now, several hours after the moon had set. Jamie had just woken up, and her head felt heavy. She felt like her ears were ringing, too, which was not fun. Jamie went to grab for the parchment she kept on her bedside table, intending to make a few notes for Sienna for their next formulation. When she slid the parchment closer to her, though, it sounded like someone was crinkling the paper inside her skull. Jamie closed her eyes against the sound, shaking her head a little to clear it. Her hands were steady as she picked up her quill, but the moment she made the first stroke on paper, Jamie began to shake. It sounded like someone was grinding an axe right next to her - impossibly loud. It made it difficult to concentrate.
The ink smelled weird, too. Normally Jamie could only smell it when she leaned over to blow on the paper and dry it, but it smelled like she had used the ink to paint her entire room. Jamie hadn't noticed it over the sounds still assaulting her ears (the noise had turned from a ringing to a buzzing, like there was a distant swarm of bees) but now it was painfully obvious. Jamie didn't know what was happening; she had always had a good sense of smell, but never this good. Maybe it was just a weird come-down from the potion. Jamie had already taken the day off work, as she always did the day after the moon, so she decided to go back to sleep. Things would be better when she woke up.
--- Except they weren't. When Jamie woke again, something assaulted her nose. She stumbled out of her bedroom, trying to find the source of the smell. Her mother wasn't home, so it wasn't her or anything she was doing. Jamie groaned, her stomach turning. She couldn't identify the smell, but it wasn't good and she just wanted it to stop. Her eyes still gummy with sleep, Jamie went through the house, checking the windows. There was the culprit - one cracked window in the back room, letting in smells from the neighbor's. Jamie slammed the window shut, but immediately regretted the decision. The noise had sounded like a thunderclap, and it wasn't helping her burgeoning headache.
She still didn't know what was going on, but it was obvious to Jamie this was more than just a bad potion comedown. Something had changed, probably last night, and now she could smell and hear better than she had been able to before. When she didn't feel like she was going to puke or her brain was going to explode, she'd send a letter to Sienna to see if they could figure out what had happened. Until then, though, Jamie was going to find some ear plugs and a clothespin so she wouldn't feel so bad.
