the rush of wind and falling leaves. AFTER REVEALING WHERE SHE WORKED, it came to mind that Calliope should have mentioned she was far from a mediwitch or had a medical position…She was just a mere records keeper. Stuck in the smallest of back spaces which was ironic since the Fleming was afraid of tight spaces. ”I guess…But it all depends on your role after all…” With a soft chuckle, Cal tucked in to her ice cream, making sure to lick her lips before speaking again. ”Nothing too exciting for a record’s keeper…It’s kinda shitty if you ask me.” Cal tried to force a smile onto her lips again as the realisation of her own terrible life sunk in. She knew being a records keeper wasn’t the end goal for her, but under her dad’s house…Well…
With her smile softening, the colour of Cal’s hair turned to a soft violet with small pink tips, both showing her happiness. Sure, being friends with the pretty ice-cream girl was a small step, but it only paved the way for the day Cal could potentially even ask her on a date. That is…If she wasn’t straight. ”Yeah?..It isn’t too much to ask is it?..” It was technically Cara’s job to do so, or so the Fleming assumed. But with the girl’s next words, the colour in both the Fleming’s face and hair drastically changed, from root to ends sporting a bright pink while her face flushed red. ”N-Number?..” She stuttered out, bright blue eyes watching as Cara fished her phone out.
”Y-Yeah! That…Uh…That works for me..” Fingers diving into her own pocket, Cal fished out her phone and placed it on the counter besides Cara’s. Oh Merlin. Was this actually happening?

▲ Apparently it was a pretty common theme for people her age to dislike their jobs. Not that she was going to complain about working at Fortescue’s, but it was far from being her career and it technically she was only part-time. Her whole writing career had come to a standstill, and it felt like an almost impossible task now. “It’s full-time though, right?” Cara asked, trying her best to insinuate that anything that paid at least forty hours a week was better than what she was doing, or even trying to do. “I’ll be honest, I like it here, but I also can’t be selling ice cream for the rest of my life either. I think its fine to not be settled into a lifelong career right away.” And there she had been, trying to do just that for the last eight months. Trying to win the lottery in both a book deal and a career felt almost impossible then and it certainly did now. The second her phone hit the counter and she looked up at Cal, she realized what she had just done. If the sudden reddened face wasn’t a clue, the change in hair color was. Was asking for her number putting her too much on the spot? Cara had never had a problem with handing hers out to people when they’ve asked, but Cal, while talkative, had given off the impression throughout their whole conversation that there were certain things she was more…shy about. “Yeah, I mean, only if you want…” she trailed off as the other girl’s phone was placed next to hers. Cara picked it up and plugged her info in, before setting it back down. “I usually work Tuesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays. So the busy days. The rest of the week I try to stay as far away from Diagon as possible.” Cara let out an awkward laugh, then realizing that she literally did nothing on her days off. She could barely keep up consistency with her writing because of her current schedule. That ended up leaving her sleeping away her off days or having to run errands for her parents. Who wanted to do that at almost nineteen? MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

the rush of wind and falling leaves. "RIGHT." CALLIOPE RESPONDED, NODDING AS she thought about it. The Fleming worked a full thirty to forty hours and then picked up shifts within the black market whenever she felt like it. It was becoming more frequent now than ever, considering Calliope began working with various sellers, some whose provider remained unknown. It was evident as of lately considering the Metamorphmagi had sold potions and herbs she hadn't had before, but she never questioned it. The cut percentage from those sales were fairly decent anyway.
"I suppose so.." Calliope murmured. "What is..your..lifelong goal though?" The Fleming smiled up at Cara then, licking at her ice cream as she questioned the cashier. It was mere conversation but definitely more incentive for the metamorphmagi to crush on her. But with their phones on the counter now and the Fleming somewhat avoiding Cara's gaze, all she could do was pay attention to her slow melting ice cream. Of course she wanted her number, just the suddenness of it only made Calliope blush. Calliope nodded, listening to Cara's busy days and free days. "I think I'll be able to see you on Tuesdays and Saturday's. They're my least busiest days."

▲ Cal’s question was an easy one to answer, but was bound to make a hundred more spring up. Cara toyed with the idea of saying she had no idea, which was partially the truth. There was no telling what she would end up doing, as long as her future didn’t contain scooping ice cream for the rest of her life. It was nice right now, but there was only so much she could take before it would grow tiresome. “I want to write a novel. I sort of had one written. Partially. But it wasn’t working out.” And by not working out, she binned it and then lit it on fire. Every last note, manuscript, and journal entry about it. The whole premise of it was horrible and there was no reason to keep writing something she wasn’t interested in anymore. “So once I can come up with something new, I’ll be right back at it again.” She feigned a smile, knowing that when that happened it would be for real this time. The real question was when? “Tuesdays are the taste test days. So if you want something weird, come early. Most are crazy combinations that one of the owners’ kids comes up with. It’s pretty cool watching them create flavors that taste like three course meals or breakfast food.” Saturday was a whole different beast though, and it was only going to get worse with the warmer months coming. She knew how bad it was when she had been a customer, and being on the other side of the cash register sounded horrible. “But I’m sure we can figure something out. I’d hate to have all of our interactions be here.” Fortescue’s was fun and all, but she was at work. She still had to do her job, and spending the entire time talking wouldn’t reflect well back on her. MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

the rush of wind and falling leaves. CALLIOPE COULDN'T PICTURE CARA BEING hunched over a small desk, writing her heart away at a novel she probably had thought about for months with immense amount of planning. She was too pretty for it. But regardless, the Fleming found herself smiling small at the girl's answer, tips of her hair fading out into a soft yellow colour, representing her happiness. Calliope wished her mind was creative enough to write and present stories, whether they were true or not, but instead she turned to reading novels, picking up ideas to shape her life a little better. "I believe in you." She stated, smiling a little wider at Cara. "For whatever that's worth."
Tuesday. Tuesday. Tuesday's weren't necessarily a busy day in Calliope's shitty little job but she would definitely free up a Tuesday just to visit Cara instead and try some whacky ice cream flavours she could expect the girl to recommend. That and well...Look at how pretty Cara was. Merlin, she was head over heels already. "That sounds awfully crazy but...endearing also. Kids can be special sometimes." Cal was the same with her siblings, treating them as if they were still babies despite Eli almost being as tall as she was. "O-Oh! Right...Especially because...You're working. Am I talking too much now? I'm so, so sorry-" Calliope continued to ramble, unsure and nervous if she was taking up all of Cara's time with their small conversation despite...no one else being in the store.

▲ The sentiment and encouragement from Cal was nice, but Cara knew the only way she was going to be finishing her novel was if she believed in herself. During school, when she spent more time scribbling about nonsense in her notebooks rather than studying, it certainly seemed like this would be a feasible career. With a harsh slap from reality though, it made sense that she wouldn’t succeed the first time. And maybe she wouldn’t the second time, or even the third or fourth. The only difference between now and a year ago was that she sort of knew what failure was like. Now all she had to do was turn it around and actually make a story. Once something new came to mind. She was almost starting to think that it would be easier to bring her short stories to a publisher versus writing a full-fledged novel. It was certainly an idea to keep in mind. “Well, the one is actually older than me…” Though she had definitely made it seem like the crazy ice cream combinations were concoctions of a child’s creativity. In a way, that was why she enjoyed working for the Fortescue’s. They had a different way of looking at things, and she supposed that came from running a shop for as long as they had been. Which Cal sort of pointed out that Cara was currently doing. The Bainbridge girl had almost forgotten about that, despite being on opposite sides of the counter from her new acquaintance. “No it’s not a problem. It’s not like we’re busy right now…” Cara trailed off as she saw a large family suddenly appear out in front of the door. She had to jinx herself at that exact moment, too. “And I take that back,” she muttered as the door opened and the family entered with at least half a dozen small children sprinting up to the ice cream container, smooshing their slimy faces up against the glass. “I’ll text you?” she asked Cal, before walking over towards the preview area to start putting together the next series of orders. the rush of wind and falling leaves. CALLIOPE ONLY HOPED HER ATTEMPT to cheer and encourage Cara worked. She barely knew the pretty girl but with whatever crush forming quickly within the Metamorphmagi, she only wanted what was best for her. She couldn't imagine being a writer, especially since her mind clouded with too many daydreams and random thoughts, thoughts the Fleming found too challenging to reflect on paper. But from Cara's reply, Calliope couldn't help but smile small. She felt like she related with her family as while Calliope was the second oldest out of four, compared to Eli and their younger sibling, she felt like she was the youngest. Eli had grown inches beyond her own and all in all acted completely different to her. The reality of it being, Calliope loved alcohol just a little too much.
And as if Merlin had decided to jinx their own words, Calliope watched as the empty store that she casually stood in flooded in with customers. First came along a large family, squatting upon one another to view the flavours from the window before they came in one by one. The children were most eager out of the family, coming close to the containers of the ice cream and even tugging on their parents arms, begging to buy the lot. Calliope smiled down at them, even going as far enough to change her hair for the little girl who seemed most amused with her. Winning a smile out of the younger girl, Cal turned her attention back to Cara, nodding at her request. "I'll be waiting." She smiled, licking at her ice cream again before waving at Cara and taking off, smiling at the fact that the pretty girl from the ice cream place had her number and would hopefully text her soon.
