May 2025 Agreeing to Lee's adopting her—which sounded strange just to think about, much less to consider saying out loud—didn't mean that she wouldn't get to go back to California ever again, Chrissy knew. But it also meant that she would, almost without a doubt, be spending more time at Hogwarts. After the time that she had had there already, she honestly wasn't sure how much longer she could stand it. The trade-off, however, was for another foster home, which… wasn't ideal, either. If Lee adopted her, though, she wouldn't have to worry about that again.
"Of course. And if you have any questions about any option I’m happy to answer what I can," Lee told her.
Chrissy did have one immediate question, but Lee spoke again before she could.
"Are you hungry? We can order," Lee offered, taking a look at the menu.
"Yeah," Chrissy nodded, watching as Lee looked at the pub's menu. "That's fine. I, um… I do have a question, though," she admitted. "Does Mazie know?"

Chrissy said that she did have one question and then she asked if Mazie knew and how she felt about it. Lee nodded, “She knows. I didn’t want it to be a surprise to anyone, well, most anyone, but I wanted to be transparent about it all.” Except with Chrissy, she couldn’t help but think, but she didn’t want to get the girls hopes up if the MACUSA denied her application, or stress her out before Lee even knew her options. Though looping Chrissy in from the beginning might have been smarter, less impulsive. She could have just asked if Chrissy might like to stay with her and then go based on that answer. Oh well. It was too late now. “She was kind of confused about it at first but now I think she’s cool with it. I think it would take some getting used to for everyone.” Lee wasn’t concerned about Mazie coming around to the idea. She had been thrown off by the younger girl at first but once she and Lee talked about it, Lee got the impression that Mazie was coming around to her.

"She knows," Lee confirmed. "I didn’t want it to be a surprise to anyone, well, most anyone, but I wanted to be transparent about it all," she said.
It made Chrissy feel slightly better that Mazie already knew. It was better than when they had arrived in London without Mazie's knowing her name or anything about her.
"She was kind of confused about it at first but now I think she’s cool with it. I think it would take some getting used to for everyone."
Chrissy understood that, too. It must have been strange for Lee's family to hear that she was thinking about adopting a teenage girl. It was kind of a significant commitment. "Yeah," she agreed. She would have been more weirded out by it if everyone were immediately on board with the idea, she thought. "I'm kinda glad you told her already," Chrissy admitted. "I… sort of had to explain everything to her when we got here."

Chrissy said that it was good that Mazie knew because she had to explain it all to mazie when they first got to England and Lee nodded. She knew that it hadn’t been the best situation. She had literally 24 hours notice before she had to leave for England and she spent that whole time battling with the MACUSA and with her parents to even get the girls to be able to come with her. By the time they made it on the plane, Lee’s brain and fried and being pulled in a million directions and all she wanted to do was sleep. “I know. I don’t claim to be a perfect caretaker or best communicator.” Lee smirked. She was never the perfect sister, she never saw herself being in charge of children, or teens, or anyone other than adults at work. But, she did think that she had grown quite a bit in the last few months since she had taken on her two charges. “I’m not someone who’s big on surprises, I didn’t even want to surprise you with this. But I also didn’t want to stress you out or worry you with any of this until I knew your options.” She hoped that Chrissy understood. Lee hadn’t done this with the intention of springing it on her, she just wanted to be logical and methodical about it.

RETCON: April Hogsmeade Weekend, 2025 "I know," Lee told her with a smirk after she had explained how she had had to explain who she was to Mazie. "I don’t claim to be a perfect caretaker or best communicator." Chrissy knew that even her own parents hadn't been perfect—Nobody was, were they?—and didn't fault Lee for not having gotten around to explaining the situation to her younger sister. As much as she wasn't a fan of Hogwarts, Chrissy was grateful that she was there. It beat being stuck in a foster home and not getting much of an education.
"I’m not someone who’s big on surprises, I didn’t even want to surprise you with this. But I also didn’t want to stress you out or worry you with any of this until I knew your options," Lee continued.
Chrissy wasn't one for surprises, either. She gravitated towards whatever might provide a lack of surprises, since most were too closely tied to the kinds of things that reminded her of past traumas. It wasn't as though Lee had made the decision for her; she had time before the end of the year to figure it all out, whatever she decided. "Yeah, you know I'm not really a surprise person," she agreed with a slight laugh, "but I'm glad you didn't tell me until you knew stuff for sure."

Chrissy admitted that she wasn’t one for surprises either and lee had a suspicion that was the case with her. Lee saw a lot of herself in this younger girl. Except Lee was more social and assertive when she was younger than Chrissy was. But Lee didn’t hold that against her. She had been through so much and that had changed her. Perhaps with more stability she’d come out of her shell, or, maybe this would just be who she was, and that was okay too. “And you should also keep in mind that I am only here until this case is resolved, so I'm not sure how long of a commitment that will be. It could be weeks, months, years…” she hoped not years. She really hoped she wouldn’t have to spend another winter in the snow. “It could mean a little bit of unpredictability in the meantime…” But at least they’d be in it together. At least Chrissy would know and it wouldn’t be a surprise for her anymore than it would be if she had to move foster homes. And hopefully it would only happen once. Lee did travel a lot for work, but never before was she gone for more than a week, and she would make sure she wouldn’t be gone for more than a day when Chrissy was home from school.

RETCON: April Hogsmeade Weekend, 2025 "And you should also keep in mind that I am only here until this case is resolved, so I'm not sure how long of a commitment that will be. It could be weeks, months, years," Lee reminded her. "Years" sounded a little bit unbelievable to Chrissy, but she knew what Lee meant; she didn't have any certain time frame for the investigation at that point, and things could change in an instant. It was something that she needed to keep in mind. Even if Lee adopted her, that wasn't a guarantee that she would be at Hogwarts still. Things could turn around, and she could be back at Ilvermorny anyway. "It could mean a little bit of unpredictability in the meantime."
It had always seemed to Chrissy that the whole point of getting adopted was to avoid unpredictability, but unpredictability with Lee still didn't sound like the worst thing. She would never have a normal life again; she had realized that years before. Lee, at least, knew all of that. She knew everything—things that Chrissy didn't know if she would ever be able to explain to any random person off the street.
"Yeah," she nodded, just to confirm to Lee that she understood that the situation wasn't as straightforward as it might have seemed. "I know you can't control what happens with, um, that whole thing." As much as she wanted to work for MACUSA herself eventually, Chrissy knew that not everything that the magical government of the United States did was particularly efficient—plus the fact that they were working with the British Ministry of Magic on the investigation meant that they also had to coordinate with them.
On another note, they did need to figure out what they were going to eat, which was—strangely enough—the more pressing matter than the adoption talk. "Do you know what you're going to get, Lee?"

Lee was glad that Chrissy understood that even with the offer being extended to her, there wasn’t a set expectation for the rest of their lives, where they would live, or what would happen. But at least there would still be some stability. She would be with the same guardian for her whole adolescence without having to wonder where she would go home to during her school breaks. Lee wanted to provide that stability. She had grown rather fond of the kid and it was nice having some life in her house and getting letters and reports back from Hogwarts. Mazie was the same way, but she knew she’d have to give Mazie back to their parents as soon as Ilvermorny was reopened. Chrissy turned her attention to the menu and asked if Lee knew what she was going to order. “Uh, no. Probably just the fish and chips.” They were a fairly safe bet at any English pub, like getting a burger in America. “Unless you have a strong recommendation?” she asked.

RETCON: April Hogsmeade Weekend, 2025 As much as she still had to think over what she was going to do and whether or not she was going to take up Lee's offer to her, they were still at a pub and needed to order at some point. When she asked her, Lee said that she would probably order the fish and chips. "Unless you have a strong recommendation?"
"No, uh, not really." Chrissy shook her head and laughed a little. She hadn't really branched out in terms of British pub food, either, and there was something sort of comforting in realizing that she wasn't the only one. Fish and chips was an ubiquitous option, and it was something that seemed pretty hard to get wrong. "Fish and chips sounds good," she agreed.
@alyra OOC: We can either time jump on this thread, or I can start a new one for the May Hogsmeade weekend?
