SINCE THEIR CHRISTMAS DINNER TOGETHER, Veronica had somewhat been avoiding home like the plague. Instead she cooped up at work, taking her slumber upon the couch in the back or in other positions that led to her part-time assistant to call upon her and guide her back to that same couch. There were times the Ollivander gave up though, heading home after a long week and taking a long slumber, relying on her assistant to cover things — especially now that Eleanor was no longer working under her. But finally! Summer had come along and brought Gideon’s little feet with it. Gideon being back meant more assistance in the shop and the possibility of a summer dinner with the family.
Something each member of the family hated for their own personal reason but pushed that aside for their parents. Well. Until Hag’s Fever came along anyway. Because of it, Veronica was isolated away from her family, and unfortunately the elder members of the Ollivander family received the virus, taken to the hospital effectively. Their symptoms didn’t settle in until it was rather late, not settling in until weeks after the first reveal of the illness hit the headlines. Who would’ve thought?
Sat in the dining room alone, in a daze of her own, Veronica brought her third cigarette of the hour to her lips. Her mind was full of her parents, worried on the basis of their recovery and her son…What if her son caught such a horrible disease? Her siblings?…As much as she disliked them…She wouldn’t wish ill upon them…Would she?

Gabriel was just happy to see family. He always was, even if they were all completely train wrecks most of the time. He just wanted to be with them. He hoped to see Frankie... even though he was sure his brother didn't want to see him. But the thought of them all together was a wonderful thing. As far as seeing Nell and Veronica in the same room together... He shuddered at the thought.
He approached the door. Their family had taken quite a hit in all this, and Gabe loved his apartment but he was one to be lonely at times. He wanted to see his best friend, Gideon, more than anything. He knocked on the door and gently pushed the door open. Normally he would have waited for someone to answer, but he felt weird being out on the stoop right now.
"Veronica? Gideon?" he called, his voice hopeful, a bouquet of dark, dark red roses in his arms.

Summer time was supposed to be the time of the year that kids looked forward to. Usually it was for Gideon, but this year he was quarantined to his family's residence. He and his mother were supposed to be touring the Venice canals in a gondola eating the best food in the world, but alas, Hags Fever was sweeping the nation. Sadly his grandparents had been struck with the fever, so it was starting to hit home. Gideon wasn't sure how to handle it yet since he'd never seen anything like this happen before. He hadn't lost a family member or friend to death yet in his short lifetime.
Gideon was making his way downstairs to harass his mother about the cigarette smell lingering in the house. She was smoking a lot more often and it irritated him. Gideon hated cigarettes and he hated that his mum was willing to take years of her life off for something that smelled so horrible. The sound of Gabes voice could be heard at the front door, Gideon hopped down the stairs two at a time. "Ugh! Thank Merlin you're here. I am so bloody bored." he told Gabe dramatically. Then, his eyes fell down to the flowers clutched in his cousins arms. His eyes widened with a shit eating grin, kicking a leg back to play swoon, "Aww, you shouldn't have.." he squealed comically, batting his eyes at his cousin. They were probably for his mom.

▲ Nell sort of hated the family get togethers these days. Despised, actually. She had made a brief appearance to the holiday one, only to see her parents and Gideon, but since then she had actively avoided anything that placed all of her siblings in the same room together. She had the perfect excuse over the last few months – opening her own shop and making inventory was no small feat. Her parents understood that and basically left her on her own. They didn’t need to worry about her well-being anymore. There were other family members that needed that sort of attention. Even Veronica could do with a stern talking to, even if it would come across as odd at her age. There were times where Nell was perplexed that her sister could have a child and still act as immature as she did. Especially when it came to Frankie. Unfortunately, her excuses were starting to run their course and the shop had been open long enough where she couldn’t push off the family get togethers anymore. The one she was heading to now would just be her siblings and nephew, and she desperately hoped at least Gabriel would make an appearance. Being stuck with Veronica on her own (or with Frankie there too) would be a nightmare. Her anxiety over the whole thing almost got the better of her, and Nell paused on the front steps briefly so that she could get herself composed again. The bottle of wine in her hand would fair just as well if it was only her sipping on it from the comfort of her own couch. But she couldn’t back out after already saying she would show, and her hand was already opening the front door before she could convince herself otherwise. Gabriel and Gideon were standing directly on the other side, causing Nell to pull it back towards her so that she could squeeze in. “What’s up guys? Is hanging out in the foyer the new thing these days?” Merlin, she felt like the weird old aunt now. Gideon was definitely going to see her like that. Gabriel already knew she was awkward though. He got to see every single second of that while they were both in school together for those few years. “I’d have you run this to your mum, Giddy, but I think she’d kill me,” Nell said rather earnestly as she realized she was almost handing over the bottle of wine to her nephew. There would be a never ending stream of baseless accusations from Veronica if that happened. About trying to give alcohol to a minor, or endangering her child, or being a horrible person in general. Nell wanted to at least get to eat a bite or two at dinner before that started. MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

FRANKIE'S INVITATION WOULD HAVE SURELY been 'lost' in the owl mail, if it hadn't been for their parent's hospitalisation. That was his supreme thought when he'd been cornered in the shop one evening by Ronnie, her words as stiff as they were disingenuous. Come home for a family gathering. That's what she'd called it a 'gathering' like they were royalty or something. Frankie had said he would try, but he'd actually meant no. The look of stony disapproval and understanding said everything Frankie wouldn't. So, he decided to show face after all, mostly for the prospect of shocking his stick-up-the-arse sister.
Coming in through the back, Frankie hoped a fence and finessed the sticky back door to let himself in to the kitchen. Great platters of professionally made food made his mouth water and he grabbed a fancy looking cut of cheese and fruit on a cocktail stuck, shoving it in his mouth as he shouldered in to the main hallway just in time to catch Gabe being greeted by Gideon, Nellie at their back. They looked a right motley crew. Frankie came up behind his nephew, reaching over his short head and snatching the bouquet of flowers right from Gabe's hands. "Pretty sure these are for me, mate."
A few stray rose petals scattered and he knocked the wrapped paper against Gabe and Gideon's head pulling back, flashing Nellie a grin that was entirely too large, the cocktail stick poking out from one corner of his mouth. "Look us." He declared spectacularly, leaning against the old banister of the stairs, a banister he used to slide down as a boy. "One big happy family." This was said with a heavy sarcasm, pouting out his bottom lip as he plucked a fresh green leave from a roses stem and let it drop to the floor. The dark circles under his eyes revealing just how hungover he actually was. Then again, maybe he was still a bit drunk. "The wine for me too, Nellie?"

THE SUDDEN RISE IN VOLUME OF voices snapped Veronica out of her trance, resulting with a deep sigh and the start of furrowing brows. Being the eldest meant responsibilities, keeping things in order…Especially family meetings as such. Flicking the ash of the last cigarette, Veronica began to hurry once she heard her name being called once by whom she only assumed would be Gabriel. He was the only one out of the bunch — aside from her son — that actually called for her for anything. Eleanor, the cowardice of the family…Veronica hadn’t seen in months. And well…Francis? Well. What a happy reunion this was due to become. Veronica’s entrance to the foyer was timed perfectly with Francis’ arrival and with a soft flick of her wrist — and of course non verbal with the addition of wandless magic — the roses held in her brothers hand and the wine in her sisters hands lifted, making their way across the room into her own arms to highlight her arrival.
”Absolutely not.” Veronica spoke, directing the remark at Galen. ”It’s just reached noon and you already reek of alcohol Francis. Have you no shame?” The stern look on her face refused to budge at every threatening glance she shared with her brother, but eventually softened at the colour of the dark roses and the wine. Clearing her throat, Veronica gently nodded her head at Gabriel and Eleanor, forcing on a smile. ”Thank you both for the ‘gifts’. We can have the wine during lunch. But if you all would…Kindly follow me to the dining hall, we can be seated and discuss everything.” With that, Veronica flicked her wrist out again, the door slowly opening. She stood to the side, waiting for her family members to walk in.

Gideon appeared, acting like a goof about the flowers and Gabe shoved him lightly, laughing. "Here," he pulled one rose out of the bouquet with little effort and bowed, holding it out to his cousin, "for the lad," he joked. He loved the kid, but of course the flowers were for Veronica. Then he heard a familiar voice and spun around. Seeing Nell was like... a smack in the face, but the good kind. He realized he hadn't told a single member of his family what had happened to him. About this new ability he had acquired, and instantly he wanted to pull her aside and well... cry, probably. For an actor, he wasn't good at hiding his emotions on his face.
He blinked himself back into shape. "Aw, yeah. The foyer is where it's at. I can take that," he joked, nodding toward the wine. And, of course, the moment vanished as soon as Frankie walked in and snatched the flowers right out of his hands. "Frank-" Gabe protested, but it was short lived. When Frankie made that clearly sarcastic statement about them being a happy family... Gabe felt an immense sadness in his chest. When Veronica appeared, Gabe quickly snatched the flowers back and approached his sister, holding them out to her. "You look beautiful," he complimented. He kept his eyes on Veronica as she opened the doors, following her into the dining room.
This was... gonna be something.

Gideon accepted the crisp rose from Gabe with an exaggerated manic gleeful smile, turning as Nell entered with a bottle of wine in her arms, "Hey Nell," he greeted her, handing her the flower Gabe gave him. Heavy footsteps followed and Frank appeared, smelling like the floor of a pub. Gideon ignored the drunken fool and shrugged at Nell, understanding that his mother would make a fuss over 'giving a minor alcohol' without the awkward explanation. He brushed a couple of rose petals off of his head, no thanks to Frank, "She only likes the fancy kind," Gideon warned Nell with shifty eyes, judging the label of the bottle heavily - although the fifth year knew nothing about alcohol. Like any teenager, he liked to pretend he knew more about things than he knew.
Frank made a stupid comment about them being a happy family and Gideon couldn't help but chuckle darkly at his timing, eyes searching for his mother. Maybe his drunk slob of an uncle was funnier than they gave him credit for. As his mother entered the room and requested everyone into the dining hall, Gideon obediently did so, following her and Gabe without hesitation and falling into an open seat.

▲ Thank Merlin she bought a second bottle of the wine she brought with her. Because she was going to need it the second she got home from this. A lot happened at once, from Frankie’s entrance to the sudden pull of the bottle from her hands as Veronica made her…appearance. Nell knew how she worked, and she was sure her sister had been perched right around the corner, waiting for the most opportune time to slide in and do the most damage. Everything fell into place like clockwork, like it had dozens of times before. Quiet, but snide, comments back and forth between everyone (Veronica being the loudest and most overt about her contempt towards Frankie), Gideon being, well, Gideon, and Gabriel fawning over Veronica. She couldn’t tell if that was an act or not anymore, though secretly wished it was. And Frankie? From the smell, definitely had too much to drink either that morning or the previous night. Again, no surprise there. She still had no idea how she juggled dealing with all of them, but somehow it worked. They were definitely easier to handle on their own, while meeting together was like asking for wands to be drawn and insults thrown back and forth. The Ollivanders were certainly a proud bunch. Nell didn’t have a chance to respond to Frankie or Gideon before Veronica commanded them to head to the dining room. The two youngest Ollivanders went first, and Nell nudged her older brother in the ribs with her elbow before shooting him an exhausted glare. They both had to be on their best behavior for whatever this was, even if it would kill them. She disliked Veronica as much as he did but being civil in front of the other two would show just how ridiculous she could be. Following them into the dining room, Nell nodded at her sister as she passed, and eventually found her normal spot at the table. The notable absence of their parents meant that whatever this was, it probably wasn’t business related. Usually they were keyed in for financial problems. And if that had been the problem at hand, there was no way Veronica would have invited her over. Nell was the competition now. Still, she felt like she needed to ask anyways, “Mum and dad aren’t coming?” MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

AS IF SUMMONED BY THE SHEER NOTION OF insubordination, Ronnie appeared from some hidden corner of the Ollivander home. The wine ripped from his hands and floating across the room like a bad Vegas magic trick. "Nice." Frankie remarked, wiping his hands on his shirt as if the magic left a stain. "Always a pleasure, sis." He grinned stiffly, already regretting his decision to come in the first place.
"Trust me, kids," Frankie drawled, looking at Gabriel and... the other one. "I wouldn't drink before if Ronnie stored anything but sherry and house wines." He tittered, like a gossiping hen, hands tucked in to his pockets. "It's like a fucking funeral parlour in here!" He exclaimed, raising his voice above her own, highly strung voice. As if she were two words away from screeching like a bird of prey. "Smile, Ronnie," Frankie commented, following her towards the dining room. "You get to play mommy and daddy today." Because Nell was right, their parent's were nowhere to be seen.
Sharing a look with Nell, Frankie's smile was positively cruel, tongue in cheek and open mouthed. Ronnie could pretend like everything was great, and gather them together like little magical chess pieces. In actuality, the day he saw them as a cohesive family unit, he might actually drop dead. Nudging Nell back, he reached back and slung an arm around her shoulders. At the cost of her own place in the family, Nell had always stuck by Frankie. She was definitely his favourite, and that wasn't just the booze talking. "So, how's the wand shop?" He asked, loudly and arrogantly. He was not talking to Ronnie. "I hear you're the new talk of the town." He hadn't.

HUMILATING HER YOUNGER BROTHER WOULD have usually brought a smile to the eldest Ollivander's lips but with the situation rather bleak, only minor smiles from the compliments little Gabriel gave her were only present. "Thank you Gabriel." She murmured, a genuine smile on her lips as she passed him. Her smile remained the same as Gideon followed behind him, dropping to a respectable smile as she gently nodded her head at Nell. Their relationship had changed now that Nell wasn't slouching over her work station in the shop and instead opened up a place for herself. Good for her. Francis went on, being the last family member to walk through the door and head into the dining room, muttering out gossips to the rest of the family. She rolled her eyes, closing the doors behind her as she strolled to her seat, closest to her son and furthest away from Francis.
Veronica listened, mentally tutting at Francis' dying need to hear his own voice, his mocking tone evident as he commented for her to smile, and how she had the opportunity to play mommy and daddy. She tutted for real then, disgust evident in her facial expression. A hand rose, the wandless and non verbal magic filling the air as the bell in the far corner of the dining room signalled for the servants of their manor, to start bringing in their meals. Veronica knew it would still be a few minutes before they all piled in, so it was enough time for her to speak regardless. "That's...One of the reasons why I requested you all here.." She trailed off, looking down at Gideon before leaning in and pinching the lobe of his ear playfully. "And the main reason I keep smoking so much..Which I apologise for Gideon."
Eyes rose then, looking up at her siblings, from Gabriel first, Nell shortly after and then Francis for just a brief moment. "They have Hags Fever." There was no other way to address it without being straight forward enough. And so, the eldest picked at her serviette then, unfolding it and placing it across her lap. "Thus the Summer Ball Father planned to host this year shall be cancelled. And with the new quarantine rules...We can't host it anyway." Veronica paused, waving her same hand to open up the doors of the dining room once more, allowing the food to be brought in. "They're still within St Mungos, with the best witches and wizards around to take care of them but...For those who cared, our parents are ill...Let's just pray to Merlin death doesn't strike them anytime soon."
