Virva had a day off work today so she's decided to investigate the obsession that the wizarding world seemed to have with wands. She figured the best possible way to do this was to visit a wand shop. She herself could cast all her magic perfectly using her scrimshaw spoon but somehow that was considered strange? She chuckled as she touched the spoon in her pocket and ran her fingertips along the engraving. It was both a piece of art and something very dear to her. She'd spent hours on the engraving too under the careful tuttelage of her father. He said that using your own hands to craft your spell focus did far more to create a bond between your and your focus than any special stick. She was quite aware something had happened between her father and the magical world that made him carry some form of a grudge. She suspected they had disrepected his shamanic practises somehow. Not everybody realised that such practises were some of the most ancient ways of casting magic. So yes, she was stuck in the medieval times with a spoon for a spell focus and a severe misunderstanding of the most normal things. She wasn't too prone to seeing the ways of others as normal and usually found herself to be the odd one out and liking it far more than fitting in. She stood apart from the crowd and people wanted others to blend in. That simply was not her style. But today she was going to learn a thing or two about wands, or at least that was the plan. She'd wandered into the shop and was kind of confused about why there were no displays to show off the merchandise in the same way most shops had it. It seemed different somehow, as if people didn't come in here to choose a magic stick but more to get one stuffed in their hands to work with. If that was the case it was an even worse method than expected. She had a confused expression on her face, although it held semblance of distaste as well. She was not quite the regular girl it seemed, as she didn't feel like getting assigned a magical twig. Maybe she could just ask some questions in stead? eleanor gwendolen ollivander

▲ While Nell hadn’t exactly prepared to sell a lot of starter wands to new students, there had still been a fair few that showed up because their parents didn’t know any better. Sticking a highly volatile wand with fairy wings in its core was the last thing she was looking to do, and her supply of basics had already been dwindling. Nonetheless, she had managed to squeeze out a dozen or so of perfect pieces of wood for the new witches and wizards running off to Hogwarts for their first year. They were adorable, watching their faces light up at the slightest twinkle of light or gust of air coming from the wand tip. When she had worked under her sister, Veronica had typically delegated her as the new student dignitary. It was true that Nell knew the back log of wands better than anyone else at Ollivanders. If she had been allowed to make as many as she had been forced to rearrange, she wouldn’t have run off and started her own business. But there she was, the new school year started and realizing that she lacked materials for basic wands. There would be more sales of those during the holidays too, replacing first year accidents or losses. It always happened. Rooting around through the bottom of her storage case behind the counter, she was up to her shoulders in the cupboard, trying to locate her catalog that she used to order core materials. Exclaiming loudly from inside as her hands wrapped around the leather-bound book, she hopped up from behind the counter and slammed it down on top of the glass display case, only just realizing that there was a girl standing inside the shop. The bell above the door clearly decided to omit doing its job again. “Hi!,” Nell blurted out, feeling her face start to flush as she realized she probably looked like a crazy person getting excited over a catalog. “Can I help you?”@virvatuli ● 329 ● Sun Tomorrow by Ira Wolf MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

Well that one certainly popped out of nowhere. Virva's eyes widened and her hand went to her heart. "Vittu!" She squeeked a bit surprised, as she hadn't really expected anybody to pop out on her like that, for whatever reason. She shook her head for a moment and then gave the other woman a bit of a critical look over. "Actually.... Yeah." She said, almost bordering on rude. She wasn't exactly the type to bother with the normal delicacies of politics and social interaction and had a particular distaste of unrequired hierarchy. She motioned towards the seemingly endless number of boxes. "Did you make all of those? Also, why? Does magic work properly with wooden sticks for people around here? Why do most people not have any hand in creating their spell focus?" She looked around again at the many small boxes and gave the other woman an exasperated look. "And why wooden sticks? Don't they like... break? All the time?" She was easily aware that her manners were more than lacking and she could easily be seen as rude. She probably was in all honesty but she wasn't exactly the type to care. She'd always been a rather free spirit and the idea of being restricted in the ways that most people seemed to be here didn't rub her the right way. Did they know no other way than the wands they used. She wriggled her nose for a moment. "I don't mean to be disrepectful or anything. It's just.... where I came from we contribute to the shaping of our spell focus. Or that is what my dad had me do. He said it created a bond between you and the crafting focus that would not be easily broken as you put a part of your own spirit into your focus, making it an extension of not just your magic but your soul as well. The way he described it I find it weird a spell focus is sold in stores like this." She said with a shrug as she walked towards the girl and pulled out her scrimshaw spoon. "This is mine, if you want to see. But I'd like to see one of yours." eleanor gwendolen ollivander

▲ Goodness, she had scared the poor girl! Nell immediately felt bad, seeing the way she reacted and exclaimed something in a different language. Before she could apologize for the shock, the girl responded about needing help and then immediately started asking why wands were made and what they were really used for. Nell was slightly confused, because aside from a few instances and magical cultures that preferred wandless magic, she was fairly positive that wands were the standard for magical conduits these days. Sure, the odd modifier made an appearance every now and then, or an ancient staff that could be used in a similar manner, but those were far and few. And here she seemed almost confused about why wands were used. A bubble of a laugh escaped Nell when the girl asked if they broke all the time. “I made most of them. Some I’ve purchased. And they don’t break nearly as much as you’d think. I wouldn’t have a business if replacements and repairs weren’t necessary.” When it came to the subject of spell focus, Nell assumed she meant making the wand themselves. While that would be an admirable feat for the standard witch or wizard, no doubt it would be a painstakingly long process. Trying to teach eleven year olds at Hogwarts wand lore and wood carving was not exactly economical or cheap. The girl went on to explain that she had made her wand, because that was her culture, and then slapped what looked to be a spoon-like thing made of bone down on the counter. Nell stared at it, sort of perplexed for a second, and then nodded her head as she reached back and pulled out a random box from her shelf of wands. “This is a wand made out of pine, with a core of werewolf whiskers,” she explained as she removed her creation from the box and placed it in front of the girl, not taking her eyes away from the spoon thing the whole time. “Do you use that like a wand? Or is it used to help channel more potent wandless magic?” Nell lifted the glasses that dangled from around her neck up to the bridge of her nose as she leaned in closer to look at the spoon. “Either way, it’s an absolutely breathtaking piece.” She had worked on a fair share of bone pieces for wand handles, but this was something else altogether. @virvatuli ● 406 ● Distant Solar Systems by Julien Baker MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

Okay, so maybe Virva had overstated the lack of wands she'd seen. Her own family favoured different things as conduits and within her village people were far more likely to use a staff or kantele. She shrugged slightly and calmed down a little bit. Her father and mother both had been exceptionally proud when she'd finished her own conduit (with a little bit of help of course) and most in the village had been proud of her achievement. It made more sense, considering how Virva interacted with the nature around her. Yet most wands and staff back home were made of birch and pine since those trees were most prevalent there. Virva leaned forward but her nose scrunched up a little at the mention of werewolf whiskers. She wasn't fully sure what to think of that. It seemed like inviting bad news to her but it wasn't like she was any sort of expert on the matter. She just knew that if she were to ever get a wand, she'd want a birch one connected to some form of nature magic. If anybody in the world sold birch with something related to water that was about as perfect as it would get. "I have this one and a kantele back home. Do you have any birch wands?" She asked curiously, wondering if it'd be worth buying one. She kept on being paid money and it felt so stupid. Money was a vile way of trade in her own eyes as the worth of things was not always worth the money. It was a tricky kind of balance that was lost too easily with set prices. What was worth much to another was worth very little to the next. Trade took that into account where money did not. Virva shrugged. "It's a conduit. Depending on what you want to do it's best to either do it wandless or use a conduit. Nature responds easier to me than objects of not natural origin. I can easily conjure flame and water without a conduit but high level transfiguration works better with a conduit. You ask a lot from the spirits if you want them to shape something without life into a living creature. It's much easier if you use plants compared to rocks as wood has memories of life and growth. The spirits of the rocks are not used to change and therefor more likely to resist it." She imagined that a wand with werewolf whiskers might be well suited to the purpose, since it knew changing from one form to another very well. Virva figured that if the lady had a birch wand it could possibly be worth buying, if it was combined with the right thing. It seemed like the kind of thing to match her at least. eleanor gwendolen ollivander

▲ Nell listened to everything the girl had to say about what sort of wands she was interested in, and what (and how) she utilized her conduit normally. It really seemed like she was intrigued by the prospect of using a wand, and Nell was far from the kind of person to turn down someone that was interested in using different kinds of magical artifacts. If she ever got her hand on a magical staff, or even something like the girl’s bone spoon thing, she would definitely use it as much as possible. Who wouldn’t use a cool thing like that? Nodding her head that showed she understood the request, Nell thought about the different sorts of birch wands she had made. Most were standard starter wands, which if she wanted to go cheap, would work as a way to get a feel for a wand. At the same time, she felt like the girl definitely knew what she was doing and how to use conduits, so something a little more complex would work too. “There’s one I think you might like. No telling if it’ll respond to you, because that happens with wands…let me get it.”Turning around to her wand case, Nell’s fingers danced from box to box as she tried to find the singular birch wand she had mentioned. She didn’t use the wood a lot because it was soft and not the best conductor of magic for the cores she normally worked with, but this one was different. As she found it, she slid it off of the shelf and brought it back to the counter. “So, this is birch with a combined core of coral and kelpie hair.” Nell pulled the lid off of the box to reveal the almost white wand, the end of the hilt implanted with a white seashell. “Kelpie hair is unfortunately a weaker core component, so adding coral to it really helps channel magic better. You’ll find its better with anything elemental in nature, meaning water manipulation, levitation charms…producing fire. That sort of thing. And it has a very gentle touch.” Nell had more expected this sort of wand to be presented to a Herbologist or magizoologist, but this girl also gave off the same type of air that both professions did. “Go ahead and give it a few waves. See how it feels,” she nudged the box closer, while simultaneously putting the lid back on the previous wand and moving across the shop to put it back in its place. @virvatuli ● 420 ● Ghuleh/Zombie Queen by Ghost MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0
