wish i knew what you were looking for might have known what you would find Rhys could be honest and say he’d never strived to be a people person. He’d learned enough to manage fine in society but otherwise never really wanted to put the effort. Either you got along with him, or you didn’t. It was a simple philosophy. His sisters would call him kind, and well-meaning but he knew what others might have said about him. The Curse Breaker trainees he tended to easily intimidate, though a few he managed to get along with after some time. Even his closest friends from his school days, it had been a slow start to befriend them, but he had been much more closed off at eleven than he was a twenty-five, and those walls had been incredibly high. Still, he wasn’t always aware of how people might see him—he spent far too much time stuck in his own head whenever he was out drinking, especially.
Vasilia questioned his answer, and he looked back at her. Why would he lie? Anyone who knew Rhys knew he didn’t always speak his mind, but when he did, he wasn’t going to mince his words, which took too much effort at times, especially in his field, it became dangerous when you sugar-coated a comment instead of being blunt. ”No, really.” He insisted as he ate some more of the frosting. Though he was curious about its alcohol content, he was pleased with the familiar flavor. ”This is perfect.” He added with a small smile.

Vasilia didn't know why his approval was so important in this moment. Why she wanted him to like it so much. It actually made her nervous. More nervous then anything else. Though as he responded, confirming that he meant it, and adding it was perfect? Well... It was like a rush of butterflies in her stomach. And the way he smiled after? Sure, he wasn't always a big smiler, but it wasn't like he never did. In that moment though it just made her heart soar. She practically beamed, smiling brighter then she was sure he'd ever seen. Rhys was probably use to her "people smile", that she gave everyone. No, this was the sort of smile that you reserved for only the best moments when you were truly happy. "I'm glad," she finally answered, and she was. Though the words didn't seem to convey just how glad she was.
"I was thinking of having these out for the New Years Eve party we'll be doing," she finally explained. Because he was probably wondering why she was making tipsy cookies. "You're going to stop by, right?" She gave him a slightly pleading look. She didn't expect him to stay all night... Because no doubt he had better things to do then spent New Years eve with her... But she could hope he'd at least make an appearance, right?

wish i knew what you were looking for might have known what you would find Vasilia smiled when he assured her of his thoughts. Rhys had never had a sweet tooth, really and he always got bothered looks when he mentioned he wasn’t a big fan of chocolate—as if he should be checked for Curses or something. Rhys looked at her. His gaze lingering a moment though he was just amused at how much she looked like she was about to leap out of her seat. It was cute, but he supposed it was her personality to show her happiness in that way. When he’d first started at Hogwarts, many of the characters in Slytherin or even Ravenclaw were on the introverted side like his own. But, then he’d befriended a few Hufflepuffs, and their energy had been quite overwhelming at first, but slowly he grew accustomed to it. Rhys figured Vas would have been easily in Hufflepuff if she’d attended Hogwarts, so he didn’t mind her energy—if anything, he felt comfortable.
She mentioned New Year’s Eve, and Rhys put the spoon down before he found himself eating the entire bowl of frosting on his own. He paused. He hadn’t really thought about New Year’s Eve plans, especially since Christmas hadn’t even passed, and he thought about it for a moment. ”Uh—yea, I can stop by.” He didn’t overthink it, and it seemed like an excellent idea to pass the end of the year at a bar of all places. Rhys shrugged slightly. ”I didn’t really have any plans.” Though he wasn’t big on parties, tending to avoid crowds, it was still better than a cave that was dusty and muddy at the same time, working and not even realizing midnight had passed. ”Just save me some of these cookies in case I’m late.” Rhys joked. There was always a chance he could be called to work, but he did have arrangements with his sisters spanning the next week.

Vasilia was a very business oriented person, so of course she was considering how to use the holidays to her advantage. Many holidays were known for their drinking, but New Years Eve was one of the big ones. She was getting everything set up with other business in the area. If it went according to plan it would bring them business, but also be a huge profit for the Hound. And she was sure it would succeed. While she liked to experiment, it wasn't on serious matters. She took calculated business risks that she was confident would succeed.
Her heart nearly leapt into her throat when he said he could stop by. She didn't expect him to stay, he had a life. Undoubtedly many other important things to do on the holiday. But she would like the people she cared about to see the work she put into it and enjoy it. Cared about? That thought almost made her pause. She did care about him. He was her friend, after all. Just friend. "Really? No plans?" That surprised her. Rhys, of course, wasn't a social person. But she wouldn't ever say he was antisocial either. He just had very particular interests. Plus with the amount of drinking he did, New Years Eve felt like it would be one of his favorite holidays. AS he mentioned the cookies she grinned. "I'll save you as many as you want." She agreed. Or bake them. She'd do that. Though she immediately wanted to tweak the recipe for him. He'd mentioned loving cinnamon earlier in the conversation. That would be an easy addition to the recipe...
Though, that was when realization struck. "Oh! I have something for you!" She moved as if to get out, but realized that with his sitting next to her, her usual route was blocked. It clearly didn't stop her. And being the owner of the pub, she felt no shame in slipping under the table and crawling out. "Stay there!" she ordered, as she scampered off, getting a startled look from one of the bartenders who clearly hadn't expected to see his boss crawling under tables. She disappeared in the back before reappearing a few moments later with a large basket. It was clearly a basket, though it had been carefully wrapped in Christmas wrapping paper. "I don't know if I'll see you before Christmas so... If I don't, this is for you! But you can't open it until Christmas! Promise?" She looked far to proud of herself and excited. Not because she wanted praise, but because... she genuinely seemed excited to give him a Christmas present.

wish i knew what you were looking for might have known what you would find Surely it wasn’t a total surprise that he was free on New Year’s Eve. For the past handful of years, he’d hardly been home to celebrate properly, preferring to drink on his own or with a friend in a dusty shack somewhere. Vasilia seemed happy at his acceptance, and Rhys had to admit her energy was contagious, and he found himself grinning as he nodded his head. ”Really.” He assured her. He supposed it wasn’t much of a hassle to stop by. Maybe some of his friends would be present. Considering it was Vas’ party at her pub, he assumed Ilija would be there, and as long-time friends, he would not mind the company. ”Why wouldn’t I want to spend New Year’s Eve where all the whiskey is?” He added, jokingly. She’d seen just how much he could drink and remembered how she had helped him not a few days before. It was still a bit embarrassing, even if it wasn’t the first time he’d blacked out.
She promised to save him cookies, and he smiled again. It was odd for him to eat so many sweets, but maybe it was the combination of flavors and that it was homemade that made him unable to stop. And suddenly she seemed to jump in her seat and was trying to escape it at the same time. Rhys looked to move so she could get out, but instead, Vas climbed under the table, and he looked in a bit of disbelief, glancing at the bartender who walked by, who seemed equally confused. She scurried away and returned with a wrapped gift that was suspiciously basket-shaped. Rhys blinked a few times. A gift? He hadn’t expected that, and his expression softened further, eyes a bright blue versus their naturally cold state. ”Oh—you didn’t have to get me anything…”
He inspected the wrapped gift. Even after gaining friends at school and then siblings, he’d never grown accustomed to receiving gifts. All that time alone as a child had taught him not to expect such things from anyone, like a pipe dream. The shape of it made him curious, but then he remembered something, he’d brought something as well but had left it near the entrance of the bar when he’d arrived. ”I--um—I actually got you something.” He spoke, his tone just slightly softer than his normal serious and gruff voice. Rhys scooted out of his seat and walked toward the front, picking up a weirdly shaped but not too large wrapped gift. He’d wrapped it with Sienna’s help the previous week as she interrogated him on who it was for. Approaching the table, he sat down again and placed the gift next to the other one.
”It’s uh—just somethings that reminded me of you--that I thought you might like.” He found himself saying, which was true. Sienna's voice popped back into his head and he pushed it out. A thoughtful gift for a thoughtful friend, that was all. He’d been traveling and picking up items for himself and as gifts, as was his norm when working around this time of year. It actually hadn’t been difficult to gather the items for her gift. ”I have a busy week, so I wanted to make sure and drop it off before Christmas.”

Vasilia had definitely had way to much sugar today. While she was commonly hyped up on caffeine, usually she was running on lack of sleep at the same time. So it balanced out. Today though she'd actually gotten a normal amount of sleep and hadn't needed all the extra energy. So... was she a bit hyper? Most definitely. Plus, she was on cloud nine knowing that Rhys had liked the frosting and cookies. It just made her feel all sorts of happy and giddy.
As she came back and held the present out to him she couldn't help but notice the change in him. The way his eyes lightened, and his expression softened. Rhys wasn't a "soft" person. He was gruff and rough around the edges. So his current expression was very unusual, but it wasn't bad. He seemed genuinely surprised, but in a good way. As he spoke, she couldn't help but smile. "I know. But I wanted to," she responded. She was the type to give gifts to most people. Hell, even all her employees would be getting a present (a bonus and something home baked). But for some reason she'd felt like she needed to put in a lot of effort into Rhys' present. Especially after the other night. She just... She wanted to do something nice for him. Go the extra mile. Because he was her friend.
To her surprise though, he admitted that he'd gotten her something. It was her turn to blink and look surprised. He'd gotten her something? Well, that she definitely hadn't been expecting. Not that she hadn't expected Rhys to give gifts, but because he had a lot of important people in his life and he'd been so busy. When had he found the time to get her something? Though, she wouldn't complain! Of course, hearing he'd gotten her something, and that it'd reminded him of her, unleashed a wave of butterflies in her chest and she couldn't help but smile brightly. "Really? That's really kind of you!" Now she was curious what he'd gotten her that reminded him of her.

wish i knew what you were looking for might have known what you would find Vasilia always had a positive energy around her, and it came easily to her as well. It fascinated Rhys, who knew that wasn’t a trait about himself that people ever noted. His closest friends and siblings had seen him genuinely happy, but it wasn’t a default state for him, and he was alright with that, still, people that did carry those cheery dispositions—he found it a bit fascinating. While Rhys was grateful for the gift, that she’d taken the time out to get him something, she seemed more excited to give it to him. Rhys smiled back. Receiving gifts was still an odd thing for him. Her smile shifted when he mentioned she got her a gift but not in a negative way. There was genuine surprise in her eyes as if she had go him a Christmas gift without any expectation of a gift herself. All wrapped up, his gift was physically smaller than hers, but that was also just the packaging and the odd shape.
Rhys just smiled in response. He’d gotten gifts for all his friends naturally—so Ilija was on that list, but this would be the first time he’d ever gotten anything for Vasilia. Sometimes he forgot that they’d only really become friends this past year. Ilija’s self-imposed exile had put distance between him and his family and his friends such as Rhys. Not that Rhys had been home long enough to explore much of London. ”I think you’ll like it.” There was no way she wouldn’t, plus it went back to their first conversation and talking about chocolate and their disagreement over it plus the American candy she had mentioned. That hadn’t been part of his original plan, but he was glad he’d thought of it.
