you see, i want the world to believe that there's a light inside of me She quickly stopped persistently asking him vague questions about the lucky recipient of this unique gift. Rhys narrowly gave her a suspicious look, but he absolutely was not going to curiously ask why the usually inquisitive Sienna had suddenly stopped. It easily was very much like all his other pestering (but well-meaning) friends when he would casually mentioned a new name that unusually wasn't the familiar Deva. Plus, he absolutely was pointedly correct. The standoffish werewolf actually surprisingly had a lot of casual acquaintances. Now, the exact level of normal friendship they all meaningfully had varied. The observant Rhys quickly knew that she totally wasn't so easily convinced at that precise moment. There easily were platonic friends, more intimate friends, and new friends as well in his busy life. The friendly Sienna totally was a platonic friend, which easily was an evident argument against her less than subtle point. She quickly gave him a sarcastic remark to his earlier equally sarcastic statement. A small smirk promptly appeared on his unshaven face, an amused expression as well. "You precisely sound like my younger sisters." He flatly commented. He ultimately knew that the friendly girl simply meant well. [this is awful, i'm sorry >.<]

It was surprisingly easy to accidentally stumble into the same trap in these familiar conversations with her private friend. He consistently avoided unwelcome topics, and somehow unfailingly succeeded in his dubious mission. Their unlikely friendship had previously been established on the firm foundation of mutual trust – that is, only really discussing their important work until they slowly became comfortable with the other person. Recently, they had increasingly begun to openly discuss other personal topics, but there clearly was a long way painfully left to gradually go. Otherwise, she was completely sure she likely would have heard about this mystery girl earlier. Fine, undoubtedly call her curious Sienna. She absolutely loved new mysteries, and someday a closed-off Rhys would surely need to slowly open up. She had definitely told him that unquestionable fact before, and she fervently hoped he would eventually take her (obviously superior) advice. Because it clearly was. Until then… “Thanks for the lovely observation,” she teasingly responded as he flatly pointed out her similar tone to his younger sisters. It really didn’t completely surprise her that he had obviously heard these snarky comments before, because…well, there really wasn’t any other way this interesting conversation clearly could have gone. Foolish Rhys to futilely hope otherwise. “If we all obviously say the same thing, then it absolutely must be true. You really have so many people who clearly care about you. Seriously take it as a nice compliment.” rhys alexander greyback (Right back at ya...)

you see, i want the world to believe that there's a light inside of me She left the topic alone for now, and he was grateful. He always found his friends were quick to jump to their own conclusions on almost anything in his life and possibly because he was so private about it. IT was a shift from how he lived his life, he liked a certain amount of freedom he had about specific parts, but he didn’t speak too much about it. Still, her comment made him pause. Even after all these years, he supposed his brain defaulted to the state when he was a young boy in that orphanage. Don’t expect anything of anyone, and you wouldn’t get hurt. Don’t get attached or make too many close friends. They always left. It was easy for him to forget that he had people that looked out for him and about his well-being. Usually, his sisters and his close friends—he had to remind himself to be grateful because he was.
”I know…” He muttered. Again, Sienna sounded like his sisters though they all had their own separate approach to how they would relay the same message. ”I just don’t know why you all jump on my case when I decide to do something nice for someone.” He said he wasn’t grumpy or upset by any means but just making an observation. Rhys knew he wasn’t the most outgoing person, hardly an extrovert, but he knew he wasn’t a bad guy either. What was the big deal about getting someone a gift?

Sienna helped herself to another candy cane as she started to wrap gifts again. At some point during their conversation, the pile of wrapped presents had become larger than the pile of things still left to go. She had honestly stopped paying attention completely, wrapping on auto-pilot with the same 3 rolls of wrapping paper and small assortment of ribbons. Primarily because the conversation had temporarily veered into treacherous waters. Rhys didn’t open up often, and he was easily defensive. It was a problematic combination when you wanted to examine a curious behavior of his, of which there were many -- because despite the many positive words she would use to describe Rhys (capable, determined, protective), emotional stability was not one of his strengths. Rhys’s comment wasn’t said with any anger or malice, but it still sounded petulant enough that Si laughed slightly at his tone. “Because, Rhys,” Sienna began with a smooth tone, “you’re the kind of person that behaves in a predictable way. So it’s worth looking into when you deviate from that pattern.” She shot him a pointed look as she smoothed over some wrapping paper before neatly placing a bow on it. She didn't want to offend him by suggesting it wasn't in his nature to do random nice things for people, but... “It usually takes a while before you feel comfortable with someone. Is it really a stretch to say that there’s something different about this new friend?” She didn’t want to push too hard, but Rhys wasn’t the sort of person that came to any big realizations on his own. He needed someone to place all the pieces in front of him before he could finish putting them together. Si didn’t mind laying down some groundwork now. Hence the very careful vocabulary choices she was making. rhys alexander greyback

you see, i want the world to believe that there's a light inside of me They seemed to be almost done with the presents, Rhys only had a few smaller ones left to wrap, and he felt good that he was nearly done. Maybe there was something to this gift wrapping after all and why people felt they needed to do it. There was much that Rhys felt he learned much later in life because it just simply had not been a part of his upbringing. He’d never had many people that he would have wanted to give gifts to. Maybe he was becoming less prickly the older he got. When he was younger, he was a lot more guarded or about the same but snappier. His anger had seemed to sit upon all his other emotions and was the first to make an appearance. Fortunately, there had been those that had taken pity on him and helped him learn to manage things a bit better. The world didn’t owe him anything. He couldn’t walk around with that attitude.
Rhys heard Sienna chuckle, and he looked up at her curiously. He hadn’t remembered saying anything amusing. With her words, he simply blinked at her. Predictable? He never thought of himself as much. ”I’m not…predictable.” He responded, he was going to just have to disagree. Having a routine and being predictable was not the same in his own mind. But he stopped what he was doing entirely when she made her next observation. She wasn’t wrong. He knew he could be guarded. ”I mean—she’s not…” Rhys, wasn’t sure how to explain what he wanted to explain and how this wasn’t a big deal. ”She’s not new, not really.” Rhys busied himself wrapping his last couple of small presents. ”I went to school with her older brother.” He added. ”We just get along, that’s all.”

Nobody really wanted to be considered predictable – it was one of those traits that had earned a negative reputation. Predictable, routine, boring…people often went to extremes to prove they weren’t any of those things. Si personally didn’t see a problem with it, because it usually came with a steady and stable presence. No need to walk on eggshells or be afraid to share with them. Besides, if there was one thing she could be sure about Rhys, it was that he wasn’t boring. Nothing about his career or his personality suggested that. No, it was only that she could guess how he might react to things, and she tended to be right. Maybe it was just a result of how long they’d known each other– it was hard to believe it had been almost a year – but Sienna doubted it was just that. Either way, he responded fairly quickly (and…predictably) so Si only rolled her eyes slightly and took another sip of her eggnog. She listened to Rhys as he stammered through an explanation, eyebrow slightly raised, then watched as he fidgeted with the presents in order to avoid looking at her (or, in all honesty, to provide a real answer). Did he not hear how ridiculous he was? Sienna finished her last present, then responded casually, “I see.” Probably more than he did, at any rate. “She’s not new or different, because you know her through a sibling connection. That’s why you were able to open up to her right away,” Sienna summarized, smiling to herself as she brought her cup to her lips. “So it must have been like that with me too, then. Since you know me through Jamie and naturally you must trust your sister’s judgment just as much as an old school friend. I’m really glad to hear you felt you could be yourself with me immediately, thank you for the explanation.” Truly, if that didn’t make Rhys consider how his ‘friendship’ with this girl might be different from other friendships in his life, then he was just a lost cause entirely. “More eggnog?” Si offered as she finished her cup and stood up to walk slowly to the kitchen -- and leave Rhys alone for a moment to process that thought. rhys alexander greyback

you see, i want the world to believe that there's a light inside of me Predictable. He'd heard that word used as a description before, so that wasn't knew, but he never agreed with it. Somehow his close friends could read him, and it annoyed him at times, but he knew they meant well. The same applied to his siblings and the varying degrees of closeness he had with all of them. Sienna responded calmly, even he knew his answer wasn't the best, but he'd felt so caught off guard that he actually hadn't really known what to say. He stopped fiddling with the last couple of smaller items he was fiddling to avoid looking at Sienna and paused. Being backed into a corner was not his favorite place to be, and had it been anyone he was even marginally less close to, his reaction would be different.
She was comparing how long it had taken Rhys to really talk to her about anything versus how long he'd known Vas for and their friendship. " It's not the same. I was a test subject before I was your friend." He responded as a slightly sarcastic but friendly reminder. But it did make him think a little bit. They'd gotten very close as friends quickly, but he had never thought about it before as such an event or anything different for him. Besides, his life was growing more complicated by the minute. He didn’t need these extra thoughts created by insinuations brought on by a gift he’d chosen for a good friend. Really the only thing that seemed at the forefront of his mind was Maria and that situation and to move forward with all that entailed. It was just more stress, less sleep than usual and more whiskey needed.
”We’re just friends.” He insisted. Plus, his previous relationships never quite seemed to work out. Deva had been a mess, and Sapphire, fortunately, had been less dramatic but still short-lived. Plus, he had his other situation to handle.

Since she’d walked over to the kitchen, Sienna missed whatever expressions Rhys must have been making as he responded to her thinly veiled comments. Still, she could hear his defensive tone and that was enough of a warning signal to back off. He didn't respond well to the feeling of being caught, and it was counterintutitive to what Si was trying to accomplish. Anyway, he did have a point about how they’d first met each other, too. As a test subject, Rhys had been given very little privacy and one of the first things they’d done upon meeting each other was go over a questionnaire that asked all sorts of personal questions about him. It was all for a good cause naturally, since being upfront with that sort of information early meant they could avoid simple mistakes later (and Si could already feel that this potion was going to help lots of werewolves). But it was an odd way to introduce two strangers to each other, and it had still taken some time to break that professional barrier. Either way, Si was done pushing. So when she returned to the table and Rhys insisted again that he was just friends with this girl, Sienna just nodded and said, “Okay.” She paused a beat then added teasingly, “Maybe someday you can make a friend that doesn’t come attached to a glass of whiskey.” She began to absentmindedly organize the table, sweeping bits of ribbon and discarded wrapping paper into a small pile. Sienna had barely noticed, but throughout their conversation they had finished wrapping the gifts, which now stood in two haphazard piles on the other end of the table. The visual reminder that Christmas had almost arrived made her laugh a little as she considered her gifts and the end of 2025. “What a year, huh? It feels like we’ve been waiting for 2026 for so long.” When she thought about everything she'd done in 2025 -- launching this ambitious project with Jamie, starting a relationship with Gus after putting all their feelings out into the open, catching Hag's Fever and becoming friends with Camila...really it had felt like much more than just one year. Two, maybe. rhys alexander greyback

you see, i want the world to believe that there's a light inside of me Rhys was acutely aware of what people thought about him and his way of life. He’d never quite learned what it meant to be grounded with exceptions, only for the fact that he had been at the same school for seven years. Aside from that, he’d never felt that connection to anything. And Rhys supposed that extended to his personal life. However, the older he got and the more of his family that he discovered, the more reasons he found to return. Maybe that was something predictable or something that was just known about him. Committed relationships fell into that category. His closest friends and siblings had watched the chronicle he and Deva had created, and it seemed abundantly clear to everybody bout Deva that Rhys was detached. This is why he found himself confused whenever his friends brought up Vasilia and their friendship. Rhys didn’t feel he was deflecting because it was just that simple. Just friends.
Rhys looked up at Sienna when she commented. Another topic that seemed to come up often from his friends. Whiskey. Rhys shrugged lightly. ”Many of my friends also enjoy whiskey, nothing wrong with that.” It was true. How many hangovers had he and Renfri seen over the years and throughout their careers and other friends such as Jasper and even Nixie. Yet, they chose to comment on his penchant for drinking—as if he was the only one. Rhys could never quite understand it, though he’d never admit out loud that since he’d come home from Egypt, his insomnia was causing him to drink more than usual. But he never considered it a permanent thing. Rhys looked over the table and the wrapped gifts, he’d never really done this before, and he felt a bit of pride in himself.
Sienna commented on time. This year had felt as though it had flown by, and so much had happened despite Rhys basically just being home. But that was the thing, wasn’t it? He had made a home here, his family was here, and so were his friends. Not the future he’d ever imagined for himself. Many things were happening that he’d never pictured for himself. ”I guess this year really flew by.” He muttered, lost in thought for a moment. ”We’ll see what next year brings.” They were done with their presents, and Rhys thought of that visit with the Seer. It showed him glimpses but he still wondered what his future looked like.

Sienna found herself thinking about the future more often as she got older. When she had been a student at Beauxbatons, the future had only been an abstract concept, and she hadn’t felt it as anything real or tangible until her seventh year. Every year before that had been about typical teenage problems – getting by in classes, boys, clubs. Even after graduation, she hadn’t taken the idea seriously that she could and should be thinking ahead in life. No, she had gone a full year of getting by freelancing on small commissions until she had finally admitted to herself that it wasn’t working and she needed to try something else. That had been the moment Si had started to think about stability for the first time – working for an established apothecary until she had more experience. Then she could try the whole ‘striking out on your own to accomplish something big’ thing. She hadn’t imagined that she would ever be at Slug and Jigger’s for more than a couple years, but…well, it had been five or six already, hadn’t it? Then there was Gus, a future that had never seemed possible until it very suddenly was. Despite their long friendship, the relationship still felt too new to talk about anything serious like what they wanted to do with the rest of their lives. But Sienna couldn’t deny, in December at the 6 month mark, that there was stress there she hadn’t expected to encounter. Gus’s fame was much harder to cope with as a girlfriend than as a friend, and Si was struggling with the lack of privacy. Sooner or later she would have to confront that, but for now…well, for now she was getting by. She didn’t have a firm grasp on what a future with Gus would look like, only that she deeply wanted one. She blinked out of that thought and the pile of presents in front of her came back into focus. Rhys’s comment was, for once, completely free of any cynicism, even if it was still neutral enough to only wonder what next year would bring. Sienna smiled at Rhys, letting herself tap into the small bubble of hope she felt. “Good things,” she promised, twirling a lock of hair around her finger as she thought about what 2026 might look like. “More time with the people we love, real progress on Aware Wolf…maybe less day drinking,” she speculated out-loud, although she couldn’t resist her last sarcastic comment. “And more eggnog,” she decided, swiftly getting up to pour herself another cup. Once she returned to the table, she slid back into her seat. “We should watch a movie,” Si suggested brightly as the thought occurred to her, looking around her heavily-decorated apartment. “Er, you’ve seen a movie before, yes? Never mind, I’ll show you.” She was up in an instant to track down her laptop so she could put on one of her favorite Christmas movies – Rhys might not be one to get into the holiday spirit, but Sienna was still determined to try. Even the Grinch’s heart could grow three sizes! rhys alexander greyback [End post Si!]
