December 31, 2025 Receiving clearance to travel to an island that no one had visited except for a bunch of gullible Muggle sailors sounded like a trip to paradise for Sarah. She missed being able to let go completely in her werewolf form, since working for Interpol required her to stay on her best behavior, but using the discovery of the island as an excuse to check that there weren't any escaped prisoners from Azkaban who had managed to find their way there had apparently been good enough for the powers that be, so to speak. It would legitimize her visit, and she would be able to report back to Elaine about anything of importance there.
The downside was that she had ended up partnered with Anastasia Karkaroff for the journey, though she supposed that it could have been worse. She could have been asked to chaperone a group of trainees, although she didn't think that Magical Interpol would have been willing to spare them. That was sort of a pity, but at least she wasn't babysitting.
After what seemed like the world's longest boat ride, they had arrived on Yrisle, and Sarah was glad to reach land again. There was something else about it, though she couldn't put her finger on it. As much time as she had spent in the wilderness as a part of Fenrir's pack, perhaps that was all it was, but she couldn't help but notice that it was like nowhere that she had physically been. Maybe in a dream? It wasn't bad, though, and she hated that she was tethered to her Ministry work already. She cursed internally, thinking of how brilliant it would have been to run free there, and looked to Anastasia to gauge her colleague's reaction to the island so far.

And when the shots go off you'll hear them call My heart is racing just to see it all
The Ministry, and everyone really, seemed to be in an uproar. When she had first been summoned, she thought it might have been another attack or another incident, and though her face didn't show it, she cringed at the thought. Nobody ever called Anastasia Karkaroff friendly, but she wasn't completely heartless. However, the person she was assigned she felt a lot different about. Muggle sailors had found it, but now it was in the Wizarding World's hands, and it was international waters after all. It was an effort to see what was going on and see if there was anything relating to the escaped inmates and whether there could be any here. Sarah had been assigned to this alongside her, much to her chagrin. She would have gladly brought one of the trainees instead, but they were spread thin at the moment. They arrived, and she observed the fog. She felt uneasy, and there was something here. Although she obviously wasn't alone, she felt though if she had been, she still would have felt some kind of...presence. She didn't like it, and she focused her mind as best as she could per her Occlumens' training. Her wand was at the ready as her dueling instincts were ready to take over if needed. "Stay close to me." She ordered Sarah. Walking a good number of steps forward, she stopped again to look around, that feeling was still there, and it was distracting her. "What do you make of it?" She asked, though her tone still as stern as it had been that boat ride here. She tried her best to focus on what information might be needed for the Ministry but, at the same time taking mental notes to tell her brother and the others.

December 31, 2025 "Stay close to me."
Sarah supposed that Anastasia had a point, but she didn't think that there was as much fun in that. Oh, well, she couldn't be too picky; she was one of the first Ministry officials to get to see this place in all its glory. It was certainly mysterious, and she guessed that Magical Interpol probably wouldn't have been too thrilled with either of them if they chose to break with the "buddy system", especially somewhere that was so unknown to them.
Anastasia took a few steps forward but seemed oddly preoccupied. Sarah stayed close to her, as she had been ordered to do, but she didn't think that it was because of her that her partner in this excursion was sort of on edge. Her voice, though, hadn't wavered. "What do you make of it?" she asked her.
"It's… odd," Sarah observed, looking around a bit more. So far, the most that she could really see was what looked to be the wreckage of a couple of ships. Darkly, she couldn't help but wonder how they had come to rest there or how long ago they had made their journeys. They weren't tourists; there was nothing that they could rely upon to figure out where exactly they were (except somewhere on the coast), but there was one thing of note: The sand beneath their feet was red and sparkling.
While Sarah knew not to touch it, she did want to call Anastasia's attention to it. "Karkaroff, look at your feet," Sarah pointed out. "This isn't normal sand." It almost reminded her of blood, yet it glistened like gold.

Ana looked at Sarah. She seemed a lot more at ease than Ana was. As much as she tried to keep her normal stoic expression, she felt this overwhelming sensation. It was heavy like a blanket had been thrown on her, but she hadn't consented, and it didn't belong there. So far, her partner hadn't argued with her on anything she's said, though maybe she was just as intrigued as she was--as they all were at the moment. The Ministry had sent whomever they could to get a jump start on figuring out what this was. Though at this point, it was in everyone's best interest to gather whatever information they could. All these unknowns created so much risk, and there had been enough death the previous year. She stopped when she heard her name, and she turned to look at the woman, but then she looked down. She shifted her feet and even took a step back and stared at the prints her boots left behind, but she was right. "What in Merlin's name...." She muttered. It glistened but was the specific shade of blood red. It crunched beneath her boots, and she crouched down to get a closer look at it but didn't touch it. Was it valuable? Was it useful for potions? What even was it? Was it even safe? "Either its gems, something new or nothing at all." She mused, wondering how to approach this. Did she touch it? Maybe levitating it for closer examination or blasting it to see how it reacted.

December 31, 2025 It was obviously nothing that Anastasia had seen, either, so Sarah was oddly reassured by that. Apart from the fact that they had been (very much literally) in the same boat on their way there, they also seemed to be in a similar boat in terms of their approach to the island on which they'd found themselves. Anastasia did seem more guarded or put off by it, but Sarah didn't care to think too much of it. Most of the Ministry types would have reacted in much the same way, she assumed.
Sarah watched as Anastasia bent down to get a better idea of what they were stepping on—probably not the worst idea, though it obviously wasn't magma. It was either gems, something new, or nothing at all, she heard her muse. Thinking to herself, Sarah knew that it wasn't nothing at all; it was obviously a substance of some sort, or they wouldn't have been standing on anything. Gems, possibly. That was a thought. "Rubies?" Sarah offered. It was awfully fine to be a bunch of ground-up rubies, though a relatively quick process of elimination told her that it probably wouldn't burn. At least, the sand wasn't eating its way through their clothing. Flesh, on the other hand, might have been a different story. Was it explosive? Flammable? Something somehow poisonous to consume?
They weren't there to be taking samples of whatever this bizarre sand was; they were there to be looking for any signs of Azkaban escapees, but this was something of an uncharted territory. Sarah, feeling slightly more comfortable with the idea of seeing what the soil might do, got out her wand and hovered its tip over the red sand but thought the better of it. Even she had enough restraint not to fling it about with no clear means by which to determine its true nature.

Ana looked up at Sarah when she joined in her curiosity, it had also crossed her mind, but he didn't want to know what would happen if the world found out that this mysterious island had just appeared and had beaches lined with finely ground up rubies. Chaos would ensue, and the Ministry and Interpol were already stretched thin, still tracking down escaped inmates, investigating the summer explosion and now this. The island wasn't something that could be kept under wraps, not for long. Aside from that, the Law Enforcement personnel hardly had the qualifications to properly investigate new magical phenomena. She made a mental note to immediately see her brother when they returned. A former Curse Breaker would have specific insight on this. "Could be. As if the Bank needed a reason to come here." She stood up and holstered her wand. For the moment, she trusted nothing would materialize in front of them and cause them any issues. It was an open area and still close to the coast. Out of a pocket of her cloak's inside, she pulled out gloves--dragon hide and slipped the right glove on her hand while crouching back down. There was a bit of hesitation in her movement, but she reached out and lightly touched the sand. It was loose, but aside from the unique color, it was like sand at the beach. Ana stood up and looked at her glove. There were light red specks left on it that she shook off before removing the glove and putting it back in her cloak. Their mission here was technically to see how this related to their current cases, but really it was an 'all hands on deck' situation, so it served that purpose. "We'll make a note of this, but we need to keep moving." Not only did she want to spend the least amount of time as possible on this island, but they needed to gather more information before the island was flooded with other visitors. "We can start looking through some of these wrecked ships."

December 31, 2025 "Could be," Anastasia agreed with her about the possibility that they were standing on a bunch of rubies. "As if the Bank needed a reason to come here." That was true; if the goblins at Gringotts hadn't already heard about the island somehow, they soon would, and they would want to send Curse-Breakers to see what there was to loot.
Exchanging her wand for a dragonhide glove, which she put on her right hand, Anastasia crouched back down. Sarah eyed her as she touched the sand with her gloved hand. When she prodded it, it was no different from any other sand, it seemed, aside from its unusual color. (Sarah, for the record, was slightly disappointed to see that it didn't do anything of note.) Anastasia then put the cloth back almost as quickly as she had gotten it out and commented that they should probably make a note of the fact that the sand was just sand, but they needed to keep moving. "We can start looking through some of these wrecked ships."
If there was anything left that would indicate signs of human or humanoid life, it would probably be left among the shipwrecks, unless someone had survived and gotten far enough to their equipment with them. Either way, they would have a better indication of whether or not anyone besides those idiotic Muggles had ended up there before them at any point in the recent past. And all the better to look through that before anyone else would have an opportunity to get their hands on it.
"Looks like this place is the usual port," Sarah nodded, tying her hair into a bun to keep it out of her face, and made her way towards some of the wreckage. There didn't look to be any real infrastructure to it; anyone who had sailed there had probably dropped anchor (or run aground) and hoped for the best.

And when the shots go off you'll hear them call My heart is racing just to see it all
Ana didn't have a clue how large this island really was. When they had sailed close by, she had seen stone walls, but they hadn't determined if they completely encompassed the island. Maybe this was the only way to approach. The shipwrecks she were closer to her looked old as if they'd been there for some time. How old was this island? Everything about this place put her on high alert more than usual. She hated feeling this uncomfortable. Ana approached one of the large shipwrecks. There was a hole in the side of the hull, most likely where it had hit the beach. It must have hit with some force to have that kind of hole but then again, who knew how long it had sat her or what kind of magic was even at work. Ana approached the opening but felt herself hesitating. That was frustrating in itself. She wasn't someone who hesitated. She glanced behind her and saw that Sarah had followed and she entered the ship. The wood creaked beneath her boots, and she went toward the stern, there was a bit of an incline with how the ship had stopped there, and she turned to address Sarah. "See if there's anything on the other end." The ship was quite large and mostly empty but some old boxes and crates had been there for an unknown time. "You see anything interesting?" The sooner they finished looking through this, the sooner they could go home. Ana saw an old barrel and grabbed it by both sides at the top. She was able to easily move it around, so she chanced taking off the lid--empty. Still, she hadn't realized how fast her heart had started beating in anticipation, but she knew she could take care of herself and them if needed though hopefully, it didn't come to that.

December 31, 2025 She and Anastasia hadn't gone very far from one another, though that was probably the most advisable thing for them to do. Sarah couldn't say that she was close to her colleagues, but at least she trusted her not to do anything that was truly stupid. There wasn't very much that she would be able to do for the Purifiers, Sarah thought, from that first trip alone, but she would be able to provide them with as much as she could find out without doing anything that wouldn't have been approved by Interpol. Hopefully, her having gone there wouldn't be for nothing, though her gut reaction was that it was promising. There was something about this island; she could feel that in her soul. She watched as Anastasia hesitated even more, though. For someone whose job it was to hunt down criminals, it was sort of pathetic, but Sarah didn't know why she was even expecting so much from her, either. She let Anastasia go first, watching her step inside what was left of the ship. Seeing that the wood didn't immediately snap into two pieces, she followed after her. "See if there's anything on the other end," Anastasia directed her as she headed off to the stern side of the ship. Sarah, meanwhile, made her way down to its bow. It wasn't reliable to walk on much of it, but she didn't break through the wood, at least. "You see anything interesting?" "No," Sarah called back. It looked like a lot of it was smashed in. There wasn't much to look at, really. Some of it had fallen apart, and it also looked like anything that had been left behind had been swept away or taken previously, though there was no telling by whom. She turned back to go the way she had come, towards where Anastasia had gone. "You?"anastasia marie karkaroff

and when the shots go off you'll hear them call my heart is racing just to see it all The island was not secured, and she knew that it would take some time with all the bureaucracy behind the Ministry. The idea of paperwork stopping them from having the manpower to secure, what she was assumed, was a small-ish island was ridiculous in her mind. There was no reason they couldn’t setup Aurors and Interpol Agents with checkpoints, especially since she’d overheard that Gringotts was interested in whatever hidden treasures were here. She wasn’t surprised, leave it to greed to fuel an expedition despite the apparent risk of the very much unknown. A full mobilization effort would take more than a few days. Even Ana had to admit that a leak of this information was ultimately inevitable. The bank already knew, and it would be in the papers in the next day or two. She would have to see what their Editor friend in Ouroboros thought of it and what he would write.
Sarah replied quickly, but she hadn’t seen anything on that end of the ship herself, and there wasn’t much on this end. It was probably best to be disappointed in this case. She didn’t need some hidden curse launching itself at her from within one of these old barrels. ”No. Nothing.” Ana turned and headed back to the side of the ship where they had entered and exited back onto the red beach. She sighed in a bit of frustration. ”The Ministry should have hired Curse Breakers if they wanted us to look through old shipwrecks.” It was no use now. They were here and might as well keep going so they can at least report ‘nothing’ at the end of the day. The uncomfortable weight she felt only added to her bad mood. ”On to the next one.” She muttered and began making her way to the next large shipwreck, assuming Sarah would follow.

December 31, 2025 So far, Sarah was intrigued by the island, but she knew that the real fun would come beyond the shipwrecks along the bay. Inland, she hoped, they would find something of interest—either superficially to the Ministry or to the Purifiers. This bizarre, ruby red sand was sort of different, but what good was it to Elaine Dupree if it didn't, say, get its red coloring from blood or actual gemstones? There wasn't any treasure to be found on the ship that she and Anastasia Karkaroff had decided to explore; it was a dud, as Karkaroff confirmed that she hadn't found anything there, either. She disembarked from what remained of the ship, and Sarah followed her soon after.
Karkaroff, obviously frustrated already, sighed and said that the Ministry should have hired Curse-Breakers if they wanted people to be looking through shipwrecks. Like that would go over well with the goblins at the bank, Sarah thought in amusement, though she merely nodded her head slightly and glanced in the direction of another ship. "On to the next one," Karkaroff proclaimed in boredom, and Sarah followed.
"Alright," Sarah said, glad that this second ship looked to be more structurally sound than the one before it. Obviously, it had wrecked; it wasn't seaworthy, but it looked a little bit newer. She was able to board it with greater ease, and she looked to see if Karkaroff was still coming. She almost wondered if they might come across any bodies, and the thought of seeing Karkaroff even more uneasy about where they had found themselves made her even more eager. The sooner they could check the ships and tick those metaphorical boxes, the sooner they could see what so few others had.

and when the shots go off you'll hear them call my heart is racing just to see it all This wasn’t at all how Ana had pictured spending her New Year’s Eve. And it was an ominous start to the succeeding year. Sarah didn’t argue with her direction, and Ana still wasn’t sure what to think about her. She didn’t appear to be as bothered by the strange magic here, or she was hiding it better than Ana was. And despite their proximity to the coast, she slowly began to notice a fog starting to appear around them. It had been a subtle change, but the walk to the subsequent shipwreck made it more evident as the sand seemed to glimmer a bit less than when they had arrived. They walked in silence for a few moments, the only sound being the sand underneath their shoes and the occasional wave crash on the beach. The tide was not strong here, which made the shipwrecks even more strange.
They arrived, and Ana didn’t enter right away, stopping instead to check her surroundings. It didn’t look much different than from where they had walked from, and she could see their faint footsteps in the sand. ”There’s a fog…” Ana noted. Which could just be weather phenomena or something else, and she hoped it was only the former. This ship was smaller than the other one, though clearly hadn’t been here as long, and Ana paused a moment to try to know her surroundings better—a side effect of her training and paranoia. But then she followed Sarah into the ship. There wasn’t much inside that she could see but a great deal more random old boxes and barrels. She wasn’t too eager to look through them. But it seemed the fog even existed inside this ship, unlike the last one.

December 31, 2025 "There's a fog…"
Anastasia's observation wasn't inaccurate. Sarah saw it, too, because it was nearly impossible to miss. Beyond the beach and its red sand, a thick fog hung over the island. If her partner in this journey hadn't said anything about it, Sarah thought, she wouldn't have bothered to point it out. (They were on this island with Merlin only knew what, and she was concerned about the weather?)
Then again, it seemed to Sarah that she was much more relaxed about the place as a whole and that there was something that had shaken Anastasia Karkaroff about it. This island wasn't normal. Neither were either of them, to be frank. It was already obvious why Muggles wouldn't have lasted a second there, though Sarah's basis for that was that they were inherently weak. Anything that was somewhat out of the ordinary was too much for them to comprehend.
Sighing, Sarah gave a quick glance around for the sake of placating Anastasia's concerns about the weather. "…And?" she questioned her. "Do you want a quill to note it or something?" They had barely scratched the surface of what the island might have on it. A little fog wasn't any reason to turn back. They weren't sailing into it. Besides, they could probably just clear it up with a bit of magic, and then they would be on their way.
As they began looking around the ship, though, it was as if the fog had followed them. It was more than Sarah had anticipated; she would give it that, but how much of a problem was it? Fog could drift into a wrecked ship, couldn't it? It couldn't have been stellar construction to begin with, she thought, and there wasn't much there to speak of in terms of inventory or loot, either.

and when the shots go off you'll hear them call my heart is racing just to see it all Ana shot Sarah a look, though perhaps she might have commented something similar herself at such a comment about the weather. The only reason Ana had brought it up had been because it had been so eerie in the way that fog usually wasn’t. That sense of dread grew heavier around her despite her attempts to ignore her. Outwardly, she put on as stoic of an expression as she could manage in her effort to maintain her composure. ”It wasn’t here a moment ago. This isn’t a regular fog.” She remarked, irritation clear in her tone. The fact that Sarah was not as affected as she was by whatever this place was also irritated her. The last thing she needed was to look weak in front of this one.
They entered the ship, and the fog appeared to follow them inside. The hair on the back of Ana’s neck stood up as it seemed to encircle them in this very tight space. Visibility was still there but not nearly as clear as the last ship they had entered, it was uncanny and unlike anything, she had ever experience before. Her hand seemed to grip her wand even tighter as she went toward what was the ship’s bow. It looked like it had broken on impact with the beach, so if Ana really wanted to, she could climb out that side. Maybe that was where the fog was creeping in?
”This ship doesn’t even have barrels in it. Let's head back—there’s nothing here.” Ana ordered as she walked back toward the entrance, still checking her surroundings just in case. However, the fog again seemed thicker, and the closer she got to the exit, the less she could see. ”Sarah?” She couldn’t see the other woman in the thick fog anymore….

December 31, 2025 As amazing as it was that they hadn't killed one another on the way to the island before they had ever set foot on its shores, it was apparent that Anastasia Karkaroff's mood was growing increasing irritated with the situation they were in. Sarah, though tired of looking through what was beginning to seem like nothing but an endless pile of junk, felt that there wasn't much use in getting angry—for once. Neither of them had plopped this island into existence, nor did she have any control over what happened with the weather while they were there. Though Anastasia insisted that it wasn't just a normal fog, Sarah didn't see it.
At least, not at first. By the time that it appeared that the fog itself had drifted inside the wreckage of the ship that they had begun to explore, Sarah was more amazed that Karkaroff might have been right about something. It wasn't just foggy weather; it was almost like it was coming from somewhere or being controlled by someone. She waited as Anastasia moved towards the bow, watching as the fog drew closer to the both of them.
Though she was advised to head out of the wreckage and back out onto the red sand beach, neither Sarah nor Anastasia got that far.
"Sarah?"
The fog became thicker, almost heavier, but the feeling that came over Sarah wasn't one of fear. It felt almost like being enveloped in a blanket… or like being set free.
