january 4, 2026 The worst part about returning to Yrisle was how difficult it was to get to. Without the Ministry's explicit approval it was much harder to find someone willing to take him to the island - which was unfortunate, because Poe wanted to return, many times over. There was a strange magic there, and strange magic meant strange power. They desperately needed more power if Heliopath was going to have any chance of getting the upper hand on the Purifiers. That was also the reason, in part, there was a passenger in his plane. Poe wasn't the only one struggling to get to the island, and in the interest of furthering Heliopath's goals he'd been more than happy to take Rhys along to the island.
Poe hadn't exactly thought this part, through, though. he knew there was a field in the east of the island and that was where he was planning on landing, but flying to the island hadn't been everything he'd expected, and Poe was worried there were more surprises in store before they were safely on the ground. "You doing okay back there?" Poe shouted over the hum of the engine beneath him.

Won't think what could be Can' feel much now January 4, 2026 @poe This phenomenon, this island, was all that anyone could talk about at the moment. It was risky, but work had to be done. He'd already been here once with his sister as the bank had sent them New Year's day to the island, and despite the late-night, he was able to manage it fine. Still, he got chills at the thought. There was an odd feeling about being there, like when you turn a corner and wonder if you had just been there. Dahlia had felt the same thing, so he wasn't sure if it was some effect of the place. They had met and decided another trip was warranted to the island, but their resources were limited for this--for now. They needed to gather information while not expected to report back to the Ministry and Bank, respectively. Rhys gripped the visible frame of this machine, trying to steady himself. The goggles did little to help the dryness in his eyes, and it was so much louder than he ever imagined. Never in his life had he ever thought he would be in one of these muggle contraptions, but it had been the fastest option aside from finding someone to sail them there. "Wonderful." Rhys responded with a heavy sarcasm. He could not wait to have his feet on the ground. Though he had known him less than a year by this point, Claire having only recruited him the past summer--he did trust the man who was piloting. "How much longer?" He asked but loudly so he could hear him.

Poe barked out a laugh at Rhys’s obvious displeasure with the situation. He was still waiting on finding more people who enjoyed flying as much as he did so there wouldn’t be this moment of derision when he did one of his favorite things. Now was probably not a good time to remind Rhys not to look down. He didn’t know how the other man felt about heights, and realizing you were afraid of heights while in a plane was not a situation Poe wanted anyone else to be in.
“Five minutes, I think!” Poe called back, squinting at the plane’s instruments. He knew it was ballsy to try to fly someplace he’d only been to once before and hadn’t seen from the air, but if there was one thing Poe was, it was ballsy. Besides, he and Rhys both had their wands, and would be able to protect themselves if anything too catastrophic happened. “Are you really that eager to get back?” Poe asked. He was going back because he had to, not because he particularly wanted to.

Won't think what could be Can' feel much now January 4, 2026 @poe Rhys instinctively gripped the fabric of his seatbelt. He wasn't sure how such a flimsy feeling piece of cloth that was essentially some thicker version of the belt he wore with his pants as if that would help if they were to go plummeting to the ground. It was times like this that muggle technology didn't make that much sense, but he had to remember that they didn't have magic to supplement them. He hard Poe yell five minutes, and Rhys wondered if that could go any faster. It had been explained to him that this was normal for Muggles, but he was far from one himself. Rhys turned and looked at him when he asked about going back. It was the common question, and he didn't know if he was one hundred percent that he did or didn't. He still thought about the feeling he had when he first stepped foot, and it was hard to shake from his mind. "Not really, but I treat it like any of my other work assignments." He yelled back. There was a natural curiosity about this phenomenon that was here before them but also a unique opportunity. There was hopefully something they could find here to help them gain some kind of advantage. When Rhys had found out that the Quidditch Final incident had not been an accident as reported to the public, he'd been about ready to kill somebody, especially since his sisters had been there and he hadn't. That rage, that anger was what overrode any doubts to come here despite what it meant to his personal safety and his obligations. Rhys stared ahead, and the hand that gripped the seatbelt and absent-mindedly touched the necklace he wore around his neck. One of a set, Maria had the other one. He looked to his side again, dropping his hand. "What about you, what do you make of this place?"

Poe was somewhat relaxed to know that Rhys wasn’t looking forward to going back, either. He hadn’t been entirely sure if the reason for his unease around the island was the place itself or some personal flaw, but so far everyone he’d spoken to had corroborated that same shaky feeling like the island was someplace they didn’t belong. That did pique Poe’s curiosity, though; was the uneasiness it created some sort of defense mechanism to help better hide the island’s secrets? That sounded like something out of a novel, or maybe a poem. Poe smirked a bit to himself; he needed to stop thinking like he was still a poet.
“Not someplace I want to spend my vacation time,” Poe said when it came to the island. “It’s like there’s a hundred ways for it to kill you, all of them different than normal.” Poe was used to danger – he was an Auror, for Merlin’s sake, but he wasn’t used to this kind of danger. There was no better way to articulate it, but there was something off about the place, to make even the most seasoned Auror feel uneasy. “But that must mean there’s something worth looking for, yeah?”

Won't think what could be Can' feel much now January 4, 2026 @poe Rhys nodded in agreement. That sense of foreboding and anxiety had been a common comment he'd heard from Poe and others who had also visited the island. He wasn't sure how to describe what he had felt. There was the natural sense of anxiety of the unknown as if he was entering a long-abandoned cave in the desert and unsure if it would crumble on top of him. Still, more of a sense of....well, he couldn't quite pinpoint it yet but overall, he hadn't felt uncomfortable with it outside of that normal anxiety. It scared him because he was sure that it was supposed to. "Sounds like my work." He commented rather bluntly but loud enough for him to hear. If you had told him when he was fifteen at Hogwarts that he could be attacked by Egyptian statues and moving and enchanted walls in South America, he would have laughed at you. Curse Breaking had certainly opened his mind. As far as he knew, there weren't any other Curse Breakers in Heliopath. He wasn't sure how to feel about that or if it was worth trying to talk to his old friends. He wasn't sure who would have been as angry as he was. "I sure hope so" Again he gripped the side of the plane next to him tightly as if it would actually help him if something were to go south. Still, he did feel better with an experienced Auror at his side, Rhys knew plenty in terms of curses and artifacts, but he didn't match up with Poe in terms of experience by any means. "I don't think this is the last time we'll be coming here...."
