january 2, 2026 Home.
This place wasn't home. Not the island - who the hell would want this place to be a home? - but Great Britain didn't feel like home, either. Nothing had felt right since the explosion, and it was almost a relief to be someplace that felt... intentionally wrong. Like it was supposed to feel wrong, and it wasn't Viola's fault. The wrecks of the ships on the shore hadn't done anything to help Viola remember why they had decided to come back. It seemed like everything reminded them of the past, but how the hell else were they supposed to look at sunken ships and not remember the reason they had run away in the first place?
Maybe it was the strangeness on the island. Maybe it was them not having enough energy to care anymore. But instead of walking away from the bay of arrival and towards something at least a little less traumatizing, Viola's feet began carrying them towards the husk of a ship half-dashed on the shore. Its bow was resting on the rocks, but its stern was in the water. Viola slid their wand out of their arm holster, and prepared themself to face more than one kind of demon.

Against my will i stand beside my own reflection January 2, 2026 @viola Rhys looked down at his feet. His boots left a distinct batter in the strange 'sand.' It glimmered, unlike the sand he remembered off the coast of the village he'd been raised in, and the blood-red color brought back unpleasant memories of spilled blood and a single life almost ended. It was his second expedition here, and he was physically exhausted, but his mind was curiously still as sharp as ever despite the heavy presence of magic in the air. It weighed on him but like a comforting arm around his shoulders versus a weight to carry around. Up ahead were shipwrecked remains he was going to look at while his associate of the day, another Curse Breaker, went back to the ship that had brought them there. Everybody seemed to react differently to the island. His partner had decided to leave early (which was fine by Rhys) as he had gone horribly pale and had lost his lunch when he'd gone back to the boat. Rhys, on the other hand, for the second day in a row, felt fine. Walking up, he heard the soft noises of the material between his shoes, but the closer he got, the more he focused on a shape that wasn't part of the ship, but it was a person. It wasn't anyone Rhys recognized, but it could have been any number of people at this point. He certainly wasn't familiar with everyone in the Ministry. Still, they were by themselves, which wasn't a good idea here. "You shouldn't wander alone here," Rhys said as he approached from behind, his own wand out. Even though this person was clearly human, he had encountered different enchantments over the years that were meant to trick them into a false sense of security by showing a person or something that was relatively non-threatening in terms of the unknown. He didn't risk it. "Are you with the Bank or the Ministry?" He asked, his normal, slightly stern tone and stoic expression on his face.

[blockquoteViola jumped when a voice suddenly pierced through the quiet of the island. The turned, wand extended, to see who had spoken. Not anyone she recognized, but that wasn’t surprising given how few people they knew around these parts – and how many fewer people they cared to remember. “I can take care of myself,” Viola said shortly. They’d been told their whole life they needed to make friends, get to know people, be around other people… but what had that led to? Nothing good. They were better on their own, and they hadn’t exactly had someone to call when they’d gotten it in their head to come to the island. No way in hell would they trust a stranger to have their back, either.
“Neither,” they answered crisply when asked if they were with the bank or Ministry. They technically had a job now, but not with either of the mentioned parties – and they hadn’t started work yet, so it was possible they’d walk through the door and be sent straight back out when their employer realized they were… well, themself. “I am my own.” That was about all Viola had going for them; through it all, they knew who they were. Maybe. “And you? What gives you the right to tell me I shouldn’t be here?” They still hadn’t lowered their wand, and didn’t plan to anytime soon.

Against my will i stand beside my own reflection January 2, 2026 @viola The individual startled when he spoke. At least that was some indication it wasn't some kind of enchantment but also that it wasn't someone that was like a Curse Breaker or an Auror--they typically didn't startle that easily. They were defensive, and Rhys had to fight the urge to roll his eyes. If there was ever a place that one might have accepted some help, it would be what he considered by far the creepiest place he'd ever visited in his life. For having been only his second day here, his patience was wearing thin. He was exhausted but not as much as the others. He didn't have the same eery feeling from the magic here that some did. He'd seen a few become clammy and cold after a few hours and some even sick, while he'd been perfectly fine and only suffering due to exhaustion from being out all day and the full moon approaching. Rhys put his wand away, no need to start a fight where one wasn't warranted. "I'm sure you can--doesn't mean you need to be wandering alone." He spoke, a hint of sarcasm in his tone, but that was natural in general and this close to the moon. He was almost grateful that he still had to go home and deal with that, if only because it got him off this rock in the middle of nowhere. Rhys looked around, he didn't see anyone, but that wasn't a surprise, and looked back. There was a familiar feeling he couldn't quite shake, but he wasn't sure where to place it. Then again, he'd seen so many faces the past two days alone that maybe it was all starting to blend together. "I'm with the bank--Curse Breaker." He said in an unamused tone, it seemed neither of them appreciated the questioning. "Who are you with then?"
