Feel the fury closing in All resistance wearing thin Nowhere to run from all of this havoc Rhys stopped as he inspected the outside of his forearm. Walking through this 'forest' was one of his least favorite things to do though he supposed it was an advantage to him in a way. There was nothing for him to trip on unless it was at a specific height. It only meant that he, his shirt sleeve, or his arm caught onto the higher parts of the trees and other things. He muttered as he saw he'd been scraped slightly but didn't worry about it as it wasn't life-threatening and nothing that he hadn't gotten before while working. He had visited this field with Dahlia when the bank had sent them there, but they hadn't found anything of much consequence. Truthfully he had wanted to spend as little time there with her as possible and just made sure she got back to London safely. "When I was last here, I noticed a lot of crevices." He absent-mindedly leaned against the walking stick that had been his constant companion since he'd somehow been afflicted with this...condition. A handful of them with fewer obligations had been able to camp out by a shipwreck so they could figure out what in the world this island was and why it was here. He paused and thought about his words. The entire experience for him had been hard to describe, especially when all their accounts seemed to vary so much. "I...have a feeling there's something here." It was his second time here, but even when he'd first arrived, both he and Dahlia had felt...okay. The other Curse Breakers had complained when they had left about how it had felt creepy and unsettling, and he just hadn't felt that. However, the main issue was the thick fog here, so one had to proceed slowly, and at least Rhys wouldn't step into something that risked completely rolling his ankle or worse. "I can't explain it. Maybe just from my line of work, but I felt it when I was here last." The longer he stayed, the more settled he was with how he was feeling. It frightened him that he wasn't feeling the eerie vibes that everybody had or poor Eeva, who looked like she would be sick at any given moment. He looked at Bianca, who stayed close due to the fog. They weren't here on any official business, but nobody would question a Ministry Law Enforcement official necessarily wandering with a Curse Breaker, not these days. Not here.

6 January 2026 Bianca was used to trusting her instincts. When she felt a chill while out in the field, she could trust that someone was following her and respond appropriately. When she questioned a witness, and saw the telltale signs in their body language, she could believe her gut that they were lying and their testimony was less than worthless. So it had been a jarring realization from the moment she had first stepped onto the island that she couldn’t trust her instincts here. Everything inside her was screaming that her presence was wrong, that she was a foreigner and didn't belong. The ominous feeling of trespassing hadn’t gone away since. The only thing that could overpower that sinister feeling of foreboding was her annoyance. She’d brought her Invisibility Cloak to the island, certain that it would come in handy at some point. She hadn’t anticipated the need to bring a rope until she first saw her partner for the expedition floating driftlessly near her. He’d brought a walking stick, although Bianca had noticed that he hardly seemed to need it – perhaps more of a mental crutch than an actual necessity. Still, that hadn’t been enough assurance for her, and she’d efficiently conjured and tied a rope from his arm to hers to ensure he didn’t go floating away at a crucial moment (and he could complain about it all he liked, because she wasn’t budging on this). Still, even with his condition Bianca could understand why Heliopath had paired them together. A Law Enforcement officer and a Cursebreaker was the ideal combination for an expedition as fraught with danger and uncertainty as this one. “I see some crevices nearby,” Bianca responded curtly as she squinted down at the ground. The plants seemed to be actively resisting her attempts to walk through them, twining themselves around her feet and ankles until she either moved quickly or cut them with a flick of her wand. Another advantage to her floating partner, she supposed. She tugged on his rope slightly to ensure he was right behind her and took another halting step forward, shaking off a vine. “But I haven’t noticed that,” she said reluctantly as Rhys mentioned his near certainty that there was something here. “It feels…overwhelming to be here. Like I can sense all the magic at once. It’s changing my spellcasting.” Bianca had noticed the foreign feeling of using her magic since she’d stepped onto the island, although she was forcing herself to continue so she could become accustomed to it. She frowned slightly at the thought that her magic felt different here. “I don’t know where to start,” she finally admitted. “I feel off-balance.” rhys alexander greyback

Feel the fury closing in All resistance wearing thin Nowhere to run from all of this havoc Rhys reached up and adjusted the bandana across his head. It wasn't uncommon to see him wearing it while working. It also served an extra purpose today of helping shield against some of the higher branches he was now literally running into. Bianca had arrived that day while it was now his third consecutive day, and though he tried to focus on their task for the day, he was finding it difficult. Eeva's words about the druid legends still swam around in his mind as he was still trying to grasp what that meant for them or what they even meant at all. It was becoming more and more apparent that the magic that was here had a specific effect on everyone and when this mist enveloped someone, they came out of it with some kind of side effect. Still, the most annoying part of the day was the rope tied to his arm to connect himself to Bianca's person. Like he was some sort of dog on a leash or a balloon tied to a child's wrist. Maybe being a werewolf made him sensitive to such visuals. She would occasionally tug on the rope, and every time he did, he clenched his jaw to hold his budding anger down. "I'm not going to fly away." He snapped slightly as she tugged the rope again and cut a vine that had ensnared her foot. "This rope is ridiculous." He protested again. His mood was still quite sour and only seemed to get worse with his continued exhaustion. She disagreed with his observation of the island, but he wasn't surprised, though she looked better than how sick Eeva was beginning to look and had looked since he'd met up with her. Rhys pulled his own wand out. Her spellcasting was affected? He hadn't noticed that with himself. So he cut some foliage at the entrance of a crevice, but it didn't feel different. "You're not the first one to say that." He remarked, trying to peer into the space he'd created in the stone, but the fog was still thick. "I don't seem to feel it as much as you...or Eeva, either." Rhys leaned on the walking stick more, a habit despite the growing strain on his shoulder. "I can't see through the fog from up here, is there anything in there? "

Rhys had been complaining relentlessly about their new arrangement from the moment Bianca had first conjured the rope. She’d ignored his protests and tied them together anyway, although she rolled her eyes again as he protested the need for a rope after only a few minutes of walking in silence. “You can’t promise that,” Bianca snapped as Rhys argued that he wasn’t going to fly away at any moment. He seemed to be in-control of his movements, as he was able to follow along without any major obstacles from the undergrowth inhibiting her path. But Bianca wasn’t thinking about now – instead, she was worried about the moment after their first encounter with trouble. “Your complaining is ridiculous,” she shot back in a flat tone as she felt her remaining patience wearing thin. “The last thing we need is to get separated. If we’re attacked, I need to know you’ll be here. Not floating away on a light breeze.” As far as she was concerned, that was the end of that conversation. He could always try cutting the rope himself, but Bianca had her wand at the ready and a slowly growing desire to attach him to the rope with a Permanent Sticking Charm. So Rhys would be better off not testing her. She frowned slightly as Rhys began to explain that he didn’t seem to feel the discomfort the way she did, or the druid he’d accompanied earlier. It could just be that he’d had more time to get used to the strange feel of the island, although Bianca couldn’t be sure that was it. Eeva’s reaction to the island, from his description, seemed to be much more violently obvious. Bianca didn’t feel sick from being here. Only on-edge about using magic that felt so foreign to her – like she was using not just somebody else’s wand but their whole arm. Hopefully that feeling would go away with time, because Bianca had no intention to stop using magic. As Rhys pointed out a crevice, Bianca stopped walking to examine it more closely. “Rhys, cut the weeds while I light my wand. Lumos,” she murmured as her wand lit up and she crouched to point it at the hole in the ground. She was so used to being out in the field with other Ministry workers, usually more junior employees, that her words came out as an order – despite the fact that Rhys probably had more experience with this sort of expedition. Still, she was entirely focused on the crevice, although she couldn’t see anything even with her wand. Giving an exasperated sigh, Bianca stuck her arm down the hole to search manually (probably not the smartest idea, but she didn’t always think these things through). Her face morphed into an expression of surprise as she felt her fingers brush something, and she grasped it tightly and pulled the strange object out. It appeared to be a dagger with a blade made of diamond, and the hilt held a glass orb with white fog inside -- it vaguely reminded her of a remembrall, although the white fog looked more like what was surrounding them at the moment. Bianca extinguished her wand and examined the dagger with a critical eye before holding it out to Rhys. "Thoughts, cursebreaker?" rhys alexander greyback

Feel the fury closing in All resistance wearing thin Nowhere to run from all of this havoc Rhys hadn't known Bianca long, but long enough to know that she was not going to relent despite all his protests. It made him sigh heavily with frustration. Why did every woman in his life seem to be the most stubborn person he'd ever met? Despite knowing that she wouldn't be able to see him that well in the thick fog, he rolled his eyes and kept his expression of displeasure. "If there were any light breeze to worry about, then we wouldn't have all this fog." He snapped back, obvious sarcasm in his tone. It was much the same as when he'd been here a few days previously. His training and instincts told him that low visibility wasn't good and that they shouldn't be here, but then something else internally told him to keep going and keep exploring. Something about this island and something about its magic resonated with him. It didn't shake him or rattle him as it did the others. At first, he hadn't noticed since he'd mostly spoken to Dahlia or Levi, and Poe hadn't made much of a mention of it, though little seemed to rattle that man. While he tried to focus at the task at hand, the previous night's conversation still circled around in his mind. He hadn't said anything to anyone yet since he didn't want people to think that he'd lost his mind on the island by repeating Druid legends and stories he didn't fully understand himself. The idea that a story could be true on that level was hard to accept for him. Normally the truth of the stories was minimal in comparison to what people verbally changed over time. She asked him to cut the weeds, and he pointed his wand in the direction of the crevice and the heavy foliage that was growing around and in it. "Since you asked nicely...diffindo." After he had cleared it she knelt down and stuck her hand and arm in the space he had cleared. Rhys would have protested as all of his own training had told him to never do that, but also the fog didn't give them much of a chance to see anything without warning. He kept his wand ready. The amount they knew about the island and what its magic was capable of was heavily outnumbered by what they didn't know. However, after a few moments, she pulled back, but instead of nothing, she had actually found something. Rhys put his wand away and leaned his walking stick on his shoulder, so his hand was free, and he grabbed the dagger she held out to him. Upon closer examination, he noticed the blade wasn't steel or any kind of metal. The blade's base at the hilt had a small glass orb embedded as part of the handle. A fog swirled inside. Rhys' face showed a concentration as he searched through his experiences and knowledge for anything like this. He felt the frustration grow within. Again he'd come across something that was in his field but that he didn't know what it was--he wasn't used to not knowing. However, it wasn't as if he'd been able to prepare for this expedition as he might have other ones through research. There wasn't anything to research for this. "I've never seen a blade like this before." Even the cursed items he'd handled in the past had been made of metal--bronze, copper, silver, and even gold. Moving on from the blade, he held up the dagger to look at the orb, it was difficult to see with the lack of light here, but it looked familiar enough. "Does this look like a Remembrall to you? With the smoke inside?" He asked, but it so far wasn't behaving like a typical Remembrall as far as he had seen.

There was something about their styles that didn’t quite fit together. Bianca had to remind herself (very coolly, with several deep breaths because she was calm) that Rhys wasn’t like any of her coworkers. Since she had a very lackluster social life – that mostly consisted of occasionally dragging Leo somewhere – Bianca was unused to addressing anybody besides Ministry workers. Those conversations had a predictable flow – the most common topic was work, active investigations or irritating coworkers – and they spoke solemnly and decisively. But cursebreakers were different. The job attracted people that placed value on freedom above all else, and they were used to working independently in remote places. Whatever environment Rhys worked in on a daily basis, Bianca could be sure he didn’t often hear orders. She clenched her jaw in irritation at his snarky comments, although resisted the urge to respond. Bianca knew how to prioritize the job over everything else, and ensure that things got done regardless of her feelings. Rhys was starting to irritate the hell out of her, but they could be professional and see this mission through for Heliopath. Rhys had taken the dagger and started to look it over, examining the blade and the handle. Bianca watched him study it, one eyebrow raised. She only vaguely knew how cursebreakers operated, since Leo was rather tightlipped about that part of his past. He'd always seemed more interested in discussing Ministry things. But she had always assumed their methodology involved a heavy emphasis on magic – spells to reveal the hidden properties of an object, maybe, or action-packed adventures fleeing from danger along the lines of an Indiana Jones story. Certainly not with so much research involved, or quiet contemplation of the artifact. Bianca rolled her eyes slightly as Rhys’s questions started to pour in. He’d been a cursebreaker for how long? Several years, at least, but his questions were little better than what she might have thought to ask. Eyeing the dagger, Bianca didn’t have any brilliant insights – although that wasn’t exactly her job. She was more useful in a firefight, or locating someone who was otherwise impossible to find. But she’d still been expecting some great revelation from the cursebreaker into the dagger’s origin or properties. This was undoubtedly his territory, although his little floating problem meant she had to try his job herself. She wasn't a fan of cursebreaking so far. “A little bit. I'm not very familiar with Remembralls,” she said with a shrug as she eyed the orb. Eventually she reached out to pull the dagger from Rhys’s hands into her own so she could get a closer look. She waited a beat to see if he had any other thoughts before suggesting, “Staring at it won’t do anything. We should try to use it.” The plants had started to creep up her ankles again while the pair had been examining the dagger, so Bianca put away her wand and crouched down with the dagger. With a look of stony concentration, she gave an experimental cut, slashing through a particularly pesky vine. rhys alexander greyback

Post by THE WYRDNESS on Jan 31, 2021 14:27:04 GMT -7
Greed, it was everywhere. Greed, a will to control living beings and always have more power than them. It was strange but it was always there. The Wyrdness did not understand this concept, nor did it care much for it. It liked hiding little treasures and seeing creatures search and do some odd stuff to acquire the things it had so daftly hidden. The objects it had made more interesting! In the end that was all it did, wasn't it? Make things a lot more interesting. How fascinating was it to look at the same things over and over when they all got so predictable. It understood the Wyrdlings perfectly and all the creatures that roamed the little playground it called home. Now there were new toys bringing themselves over to the island. Some came in metal contraption that disturbed it and it ensured they would not do so again where it could. It had stumbled across two people with interest in the little items it had stuffed away. They stuffed their greedy little hands in, but the Wyrdness welcomed the curious. It had come across at least one of them before, as it recognised the little adjustment that made the person more interesting. Floating... It had looked into his heart and he didn't really like being stuck, right? That frightened him? He had a bit of a flighty personality at times and thus the Wyrdness had seen it fit to make it part of his physical form too. Now he never had to be worried about being unable to take his distance from anything! He didn't have to worry about... connecting. The Wyrdness was quite pleased with that particular gift. It was in the usual shape of fog that it crept closer on them, tickling the plants and vines around them as it crept closer. Was there any more fun to be had with these two? Did they enjoy the trinket it had created? She was hurting it's precious plants though, which was a bit of a shame. Not that the Wyrdness could blame her. The plants wanted to hurt her just as much. A bit of competition kept things interesting after all. Life, death? What was all of that to an entity incapable of dying? It were only the creatures it protected and cared for that were capable of seeking other paths. Nature deemed that normal and so the Wyrdness hadn't tried to argue with that. It just liked making things more interesting for everybody that drudged through the every day experience with their eyes never paying attention to the world around them. Perhaps it could help them keep their wits sharp if it just threw enough interesting challenges at them? Further experiments needed. More changes required for those that came along. The fog stretched out, softly touching the both of them. Interesting, most certainly, but were they yet interesting enough? rhys alexander greyback Bianca Alia Rivera

feel the fury closing in all resistance wearing thin nowhere to run from all of this havoc Rhys wasn’t thrilled with being on the island for an extended period, but he also would have refused to leave until he got his…condition sorted. The last thing he needed was his sisters seeing him like this, or worse Maria. She might actually die from the laughter and amusement, and aside from avoiding that humiliation, he actually needed her alive. Still, it had become abundantly clear when they’d been they’d been organized onto the island that his Curse Breaking experience would be valuable along with the Law Enforcement personnel. The shift in leadership had been a bit of a bump as he watched his longtime friend step up and take command of his ship they were all on together. Just last year, she’d recruited him, and now he was to follow her order. Rhys trusted Claire, but he’d seen the looks from some in the group, but he wasn’t about to let her down now—even if his current companion was less than agreeable.
Bianca didn’t seem incredibly impressed with his observations, but Curse Breaking was a different field than whatever she focused on. It was a slower process, required patience, while Bianca seemed to think he would instantly know something about this dagger by looking at it for thirty seconds. Rhys turned the object in his hands. The blade was unlike anything he’d found before but still looked sharp—though he didn’t test it yet. He was more interested in the handle, for now, trying to think through all the blades he had seen or styles and try to find the closest match in terms of civilization, but so far, he’d come up empty, just as he had with the runes the Eeva had shown him. But before he could express his disappointment in that, Bianca grabbed the blade from his hands. ”Hey—careful.” He commented, examining his fingers for any cuts—which he didn’t have any, but that was an easy way to slice something.
Rhys grabbed his walking stick again and watched as Bianca knelt down and cut some of the vines that were around her feet, that had been the sole benefit of this floating thing so far. When he’d first arrived, a lot of time had been spent clearing foliage and trying not to step in a crevice in the rock and risk getting stuck or breaking an ankle. Rhys had broken his ankle once as a trainee and would rather not experience that pain again. Rhys knelt down. Though he was still quite aways up off the floor, he felt a slight chill go up his spine, and the hair stand up on the back of his neck that made his shoulders clench a bit. It was that feeling again, that heavy magical feeling, and he was slightly uncomfortable. The last time he’d felt this was a couple days prior when he’d been with Poe, and Poe had reacted worse than he had. Rhys squinted his eyes, ”I can’t see a thing. Did the fog get thicker?” He hoped he wasn’t imaging it, or he would worry what his extended stay on the island was doing to him. ”The dagger doesn’t look like anything I’ve seen, I’ll have to take it back to the mainland and look into it like I will those ruins.”

Bianca shot Rhys a dirty look as he warned her to be careful, as if she’d never seen a dangerous weapon before in her line of work. Shockingly, most wizards never strayed far from their wands, or other magical conduits like the staffs she’d seen druids use. Still, every now and then came a really interesting weapon that required a little creativity to combat. Enchanted knives, reinforced batons or brass knuckles, and once or twice even modified guns. Her experience usually never extended beyond learning how to neutralize an armed opponent, since the R&D was left to other Ministry departments. But she decided that stupid comments weren’t worth stupid answers, so she only knelt and sawed through some thick vines. It was actually a little disappointing not to see anything special happen, although Bianca also felt a twinge of relief at the fact that the dagger had done nothing more than simply cut through the undergrowth. She barely stifled a laugh at the sight of Rhys also kneeling down, although it looked comical when he was floating an inch off the ground. She quickly rearranged her expression into something more neutral, although her forehead creased in worry a second later. Rhys had a point – the fog had begun to thicken, and it didn’t seem like a fancy of her imagination that it appeared to coil around the two of them. As if it knew they were the only living beings in the immediate vicinity. Bianca frowned slightly and felt a shiver run through her body. The sense of wrongness had risen up inside her again – that feeling that she was an intruder, a thing that didn’t belong. She had temporarily stowed her wand so she could use both hands on the dagger, but in a flash her wand was in her hand again and raised up – just in case something tried to approach. “We should keep moving,” she finally said, her voice tight with apprehension. Bianca didn’t like the idea of lingering in one place too long, and she glanced over her shoulder – although she couldn’t see anything through the fog. She usually had a very good sense for when she was being looked at or followed, but it had abandoned her now. The only thing she could feel was a tight concern in her chest that they were walking into something bigger than either of them understood. “This fog is unnerving,” she muttered as she finally found a path forward in the undergrowth and began to kick her way through the plants again. “And why haven’t we run into anything else? There should at least be other people nearby, if not...something else.” rhys alexander greyback

feel the fury closing in all resistance wearing thin nowhere to run from all of this havoc Bianca used the knife they had found on the vines below. Rhys would have done it himself but considering his current situation, that would have been incredibly difficult. He didn't mind the dirt and the grim of having been on the island for this many days. It reminded him of work but creepier than anything he had encountered in almost eight years now. A few moments of just silence among the sounds of the island, and Rhys even looked around through the thickening fog for anything. Nothing. He felt annoyed. Nothing on this island had made any sense though he did keep in mind that this particular field apparently had items hidden in it. The likelihood that they had encountered a single object among this landscape was minimal. The probability in his mind that there were other items wasn’t too high but high enough. At least in his experience. But he wasn’t keen on spending any more time with Bianca and her damn rope than he had to.
Rhys stood back up, it was a stupid feeling to kneel on basically nothing, and he felt his frustration grow into anger very quickly. The exhaustion of this place was catching up to him. For once, though, he agreed with his colleague. ”This fog seems to be all over the island…or most of the time it is.” He thought about the immensely thick fog he’d encountered with Poe a few days before. That same day is when his…affliction started. Rhys had been angry and confused and then more furious because he wasn’t going to return to London like this. How would he explain this to his friends, the bank, Maria? Anyone? He didn’t need this to be spotlighted at the moment. ”This field was just as empty last time I walked through it, but we didn’t walk as far.” Rhys spoke of when he’d arrived on New Year’s day with Dahlia, though they hadn’t stayed long. The eeriness and fear of a sibling also there had been more than enough.

Bianca studied the dagger in her hands again, although she wasn’t really expecting to learn anything new. It looked magical, and considering the context in which they had found it, she was certain that it must be hiding something spectacular. But her specialty wasn’t in figuring out how magical items worked – really, she was more in her element if someone tried attacking her with it. No, this was the sort of job for a Ministry R&D worker or a cursebreaker, and she could already feel her patience wearing thin. From a more practical standpoint, Bianca also knew there was a time and place to get distracted by shiny objects, and that the middle of a new and highly volatile magical island wasn’t it. “This is something to share with the rest of Heliopath. We can keep studying it later,” she said decisively, hesitating a moment before hastily wrapping the dagger in her cloak (she really didn’t have anything else on-hand) and stuffing it inside her bag. She didn’t wait for Rhys to weigh in, since it was a logical decision and she’d already made up her mind. He clearly wasn’t an idiot, since curse-breaking apparently hadn’t killed him yet, so he must know that now wasn’t the time to speculate about the origins or properties of the dagger. Bianca slid the strap back onto her shoulder and readjusted her grip on her wand. For a line of work as dangerous as Bianca’s, her wand was her lifeline, and she always felt more secure when she could see and feel it. Rhys’s description of the field from his last visit was only slightly reassuring in that it apparently looked the same way he remembered. Still, Bianca couldn’t shake the thought that the environment here was completely unnatural. Every place was full of life, and if the field had seemingly been abandoned by anything with a heartbeat…then there was probably a reason for it. They just hadn’t found it yet. “I can’t say it’s comforting to think there’s a reason this place is empty…but it beats the alternative,” Bianca muttered, raising her wand slightly as she examined the treeline again. There was absolutely no movement, no sign of any creatures or other human beings. She suppressed a shiver at the thought and kept walking, kicking at the vines as she did so. She stopped to check the time and scowled at her watch. “We need to turn back, I have a meeting I can’t miss.” Her visit to the island since its mysterious appearance had two purposes. Naturally, Heliopath had been intensely curious and the thought had circulated that it would be better to establish a presence here before the Purifiers. But, more importantly, Bianca had officially come here to work and she was here as a Ministry employee. Her office had been one of many discussing how to set up a constant presence at the beach – the only entrance and exit in the whole island – in order to control all incoming and outgoing traffic. That was an important security priority for several reasons. There was an important meeting soon to discuss how to implement the idea practically, and she already had some ideas to share. Besides, there wasn’t much more she and Rhys could do short of sticking their hands down random holes to search for other hidden objects. Bianca was sure the dagger wasn’t the only thing this island was hiding, but it wasn’t the right time to keep looking. She needed to rendezvous with the other Ministry workers, and Rhys could begin to properly investigate the dagger. She couldn’t say it had been a pleasure to work with the unruly cursebreaker, but…well no, there was no but. It hadn’t been a pleasure, he was a pain in the ass. Still, she kept the thought to herself as they began to retrace their steps back. There’d be time to insult him in the future, but she’d rather not give him any reason to storm off in a tantrum and get himself mauled. Instead, she unrolled the dagger and handed it over, curtly summarizing their mission with “Keep me updated.” rhys alexander greyback[End post Bianca!]
