Another New Years Eve. The past few New Years, Beatrice had been working at the Prophet until 9pm, but Cade had been clear this year that they could not work past 6pm, and to get out and celebrate that this year was finally over. Normally, Bea would just head home, turn on a New Years Eve special, and sip a glass of champagne while the world counted down to a new year. This year however, she had been intrigued by a party at the Violet Hound in Horizon Alley. It was an old pub she had frequented during her early days at the Prophet, but not in recent months due to the Hags Fever pandemic. Deciding to live in the moment and not fall into old habits, Bea got dressed up, makeup, hair and all, and headed to the pub.
The Violet Hound was already decently crowded by the time Bea arrived. Checking her watch she saw it was about two hours until midnight. Judging by the crowd, maybe she’d find someone fun to smooch at midnight. Smirking a little to herself, she edged her way to the bar and ordered a pint of cider to start off her night. As she turned around, she bumped into someone’s back, accidentally getting a little bit of cider on them both. “Ooph! I’m so sorry!” she started to say, then recognized that back. She would recognize it anywhere.
Jasper.

Jasper hadn't intended to go and celebrate the coming of the new years, but it wasn't as if he would be able to just sleep through it. He knew that he would wake up at some point, cold sweat, from images in his sleep. So, he went, fully intending to get drunk. Classes weren't going to start back up for number of days. This would be the best time for it. He would just have to be careful what he said, but that wouldn't be too hard. He had gotten ready, changing into something much more relaxed, but still nice, and headed out to Hogsmeade. From there, he apparated to Horizont Alley, and the pub.
There were a number of people there, and Jasper quickly moved to the bar counter and ordered a drink. As he sat at the bar, nursing his firewhiskey, someone bumped into him. He turned to see a very familiar face. Beatrice. He smiled, "Se have got to stop meeting like this." He teased with a smile.

Beatrice let out a nervous laugh, feeling a pink tinge creep up onto her cheeks. “So it would seem,” she said, turning quickly to the bar and grabbing a few cocktail napkins. “Now turn around so I can at least get some of this off you,” she said in a business-like tone, taking it upon herself to turn him to face away from her with a small push of her hand. She dabbed gently at the small puddle that had formed on the back of his shirt, letting it soak up some of the cider before putting the crumpled and slightly damp napkin into her coat pocket. “Sorry about that, again. I promise there was no malicious intention behind it,” she apologized with a laugh, more at ease now that the initial shock had worn off.
She took a long sip of her cider, watching Jasper carefully. She wondered if he was here with anyone, or if he had just come to drink alone. She glanced around for Meric’s familiar face, not seeing him before she remembered Meric was married with a child now. “Are you here with anyone?” she asked Jasper, trying to sound as casual as possible.

A lot had happened from the time that they had last met. It had truly felt like ages since he had seen the woman. When he met her eyes, he couldn't help but smile. Even if he tried, he didn't think that he would be able to stop smiling. She quickly moved and grabbed some napkins. He glanced behind him. Before he could say anything, she had pushed him back around. He was about to protest, but feeling her focused attention on him, even if it was to help clean up a spill that she created, felt good. He couldn't really explain it. “Sorry about that, again. I promise there was no malicious intention behind it,” He laughed again "And here I just thought you wanted an excuse to establish some physical contact." He then attempted to look at his back again, feeling the wetness. "You know there is a simple spell for that." He turned back to face her, still smiling.
He took his firewhiskey up from the bar. He brought the warmed glass up to his lips and sipped. He barely had time to get the liquid down before she asked if he was there with anyone. The answer was the same no matter what. But he also realized that this was the second time that he had bumped into Bea without being with someone. He shook his head, realizing that this was a new years party, he had to ask "No, how about you? Got someone special here tonight?" He remained as casual as she did, feeling the anticipation of the answer burning hotter than the flamed drink in his hand.

Beatrice turned her face away as she felt it heat up at his comment. “You know I’m Muggleborn, so my instincts are to dab away the spill,” she teased him back, turning to face him once she felt under control. Even though she had gone to Hogwarts and worked in the wizarding world, her parents and brother were Muggles, so she had learned a lot of Muggle remedies that were a little slower than wizarding ones, but still efficient.
“No, I’m not here with anyone, just me,” Beatrice replied to his second question. She couldn’t explain it, but she felt a wave of huge relief wash over her to learn that Jasper wasn’t here with anyone. She knew they weren’t together anymore, and she had no hold over him whatsoever, but the idea of seeing him kissing someone else made her stomach twist up in knots. It really wasn’t fair of her to feel that way, but she supposed life wasn’t fair in that way sometimes. “So how have you been since...October? How’s teaching going?” she asked, keeping the conversation light as she took another sip of her drink.

He chuckled as she justified her actions. "Instincts are good." He smiled, winking at her, glad that she was there. He knew about her family, even spending time at their place over the summer when they were seriously dating. He had enjoyed that time, and in a way, missed it. He pulled out his wand from his jacket. Performing word less magic behind his back. This reminded him of his curse breaker days. Though cleaning a spilled drink seemed tame compared to the dangers he had faced.
She said that she was alone. Why did that make his smile grow. Unable to get rid of the grin. He wanted her to be happy, but also didn't like the idea of her with someone else. He hated that feeling, and he knew that distance helped. Not knowing also. But that wasn't the case now, so perhaps he would make the best out of this opportunity. "Things have been good. Had a chance to reconnect with some old friends. Teaching is great. Just hoping that i'm getting through to the kids you know." More had happened, and more was planned, but he couldn't talk about those things. Even if it was Beatrice. He took a sip from his drink. "How have you been? Y-you look great, by the way." Smooth. Why was he stammering? He wasn't nervous, was he?

Beatrice flushed when he commented on her appearance; he still knew how to make her blush. To distract him from it, she did a small twirl; she was proud of herself for being able to do so in such a crowded space. “Thanks! Just something I’ve had in my closet for years,” she said casually, as if she hadn’t gone shopping the week before with her friend for the dress. That was not to say she had expected to see Jasper at this New Years Eve party, but since they kept running into each other lately, it wasn’t a huge stretch of the imagination. “You still clean up nicely as well,” she added, though to her that was obvious.
Beatrice finished her drink rather quickly; she did tend to sip fast when she was nervous. Turning to the bar, she looked back at Jasper and his drink. “Do you want another one? On me of course, since I spilled on you,” she asked almost teasingly. She signalled for another gin and tonic for herself and waited patiently for Jasper to decide what he wanted next.

Jasper watched as the girl twirled, his smile widened. She was as beautiful as ever. She mentioned that it was simply something she just had in her closet. He doubted that. Either way, she looked amazing in it. It was hard to notice anything else in the crowded pub. She beamed at the compliment. She mentioned that he cleaned up nicely and he shrugged. "This old thing?" He joked. It was far from his "professor" look that he wore daily, and not very similar to the ratted cloths that came back with him from Italy. Though he had intentionally cleaned up his beard and insured that he looked good...just in case. Perhaps it was wishful thinking.
She offered a drink and he chuckled, finishing his glass quickly. "Your on." He turned to the bartender "Whiskey" he ordered. The drink seemed to be the one chosen by most Curse Breakers, having a cheep version available just about anywhere. Whether the cheap stuff should be made illegal, was another question, the stuff was vial, but at a low price tag, it was easily afforded by most on the move. He then turned back to the girl "But next one is on me"

Beatrice laughed. “Okay fine, but mind you, I’m ordering one of those fancy cocktails,” she teased. She held her glass up to his and clinked it gently. “To a better year ahead,” she toasted with a smile. After the events of 2025, with Minister Grangers’ death and the World Cup explosions, she just had to believe that 2026 would be better, not just for the wizarding world but for her either. She did find it rather fateful that she should run into her old beau on New Years Eve, not a date in sight for either of them. She tried not to let herself think too far ahead however; that would just lead to disappointment.
Beatrice contented herself to look out on all the dancers going wild on the dance floor. “Gosh remember when we would dance like that?” she recalled, turning to Jasper with a wistful smile. “They really had nothing on us, but I don’t think I’ve been on a dance floor in years,” she told him. Beatrice preferred the more intimate nature of a pub or bar, but obviously something had drawn her to this party tonight instead. She just didn’t want to assume what that reason may be; Jasper may not even think of her that way anymore after all.

He offered to buy the next round of drinks and she gave him a fair warning. He chuckled. "You can order whatever you want." Their glasses lightly hit, making the familiar sound. "A better year" He reiterated and brought the drink to his lips. He was ready for the new year, 2025 hadn't been the best for him, and his life had been changed. He was finally getting into the swing of things, and starting up with a new group which promised adventure on the side. He had to believe that the next year would bring only good.
She looked out, past the bar. People were dancing to the live music playing, everyone in various states of drunkenness. But his gaze didn't last long, like a magnet, it was quickly returned to Beatrice, and her smile. "Now your making me feel old" Being back at school helped with that. But any time someone started off with "remember when" seemed to bring up thoughts of his age. He had live some time, and been through a lot, but most of the memories with Beatrice were good. He smiled, being a curse breaker hadn't allowed time for dancing. He gave a chuckle. "You know what, I think the last time I dance, was with you."

Beatrice laughed at Jaspers’ old comment. She did sometimes feel old, especially when her younger coworkers would drag her to Club Indigo. The crowd there trended younger, especially with the bartenders they employed, who she could admit were very attractive. It made sense, but Beatrice was finally getting to an age where she didn’t need to get so drunk she could hardly stand up and having the bouncer needing to get her a cab or PortKey home. She wanted something more adult, more stable, more mature.
Beatrice tipped her drink contents down her throat, letting the liquid sear her throat as Jasper mentioned the last time he danced was with her. That was surprising, and Bea couldn’t help but feel a warmth in the pit of her stomach. That didn’t mean he hadn’t dated other women obviously; Beatrice hadn’t exactly been saint-like after they broke up after all, so she would never expect him to be otherwise. Still, it was a nice feeling. “Well, why ruin tradition?” she suggested, placing her empty glass on the bar and extended her hand to him. “Dance with me?” she asked, wondering how on earth he’d reply.

He nursed his drink, watching everyone dance. The music was tempting. He mentioned last dancing with Beatrice when they were together. It wasn't that he hadn't had romantic interests over the years, he had. He just hadn't danced with anyone else. It was then that Beatrice suggested not breaking with tradition, and asked him to dance. With a smile, he downed his burning whiskey. Taking her arm with a smile. "I'd be delighted." Moving closer to the dance floor.
Time passed, the two danced and drank, getting closer.

Beatrice felt like time went by fast and slow at the same time as she danced with Jasper. It was just like when they attended dances at Hogwarts, which had been few and far in between but had been magical when they happened. Except here there was alcohol, and women bringing around magical shot concoctions that she just couldn’t say no to. With all the dancing they were doing, she had to keep hydrated after all.
Finally, the DJ played a song that Beatrice wasn’t a fan of. “Let’s maybe grab some water,” she suggested, trying not to slur and she giggled. Water was definitely a good idea; she had lost track of how many shots she had done on the dance floor. She got two glasses of water and handed one to Jasper, accidentally sloshing some water onto the floor. “Oopsie,” she giggled again, taking a sip of her water.

Dancing with Beatrice came naturally. While at Hogwarts their hadn't been many dances, but when there were, they went together. They had dated for years, and though it had been a decade since, it felt as though not a day had passed. The biggest difference, was that there were no students attempting to spike the drinks. They were in a bar, there were also employees walking around with shots. He happily accepted them when they came around, it seemed that Beatrice was doing the same thing, so he didn't really think much of it. Dancing with her was perhaps the most fun he had had since waking up.
Time seemed to become a blur, but at the same time, Jasper seemed perfectly aware of exactly how Beatrice's hair swished as she moved, every movement seemed to slow time down. As the songs switched to a new one, Beatrice mentioned grabbing some water. The man nodded, feeling the buzz of alcohol, water wouldn't be bad. "Probably best." He chuckled, not quite sure why, but her giggling was adorable, and brought a smile to his face. With that, he followed her to the bar. Bea had ordered two waters, and when moving one, and with it, some water splashed to the floor. He chuckled, taking the less full glass from her hands, his fingers softly grazing her hand. As it did, he could feel his active heart beat skip. "Thanks." He took a drink, it felt refreshing, but didn't do much to relive him of the haze.
Setting down the drink, Jasper could feel his balance not being at top performance. Someone, obviously past their drinking limit, bumped into him. As such, and with his balance being a bit off, Jasper was moved towards Beatrice. Though he was off balance, he still had a fairly good reaction time. He moved his hands on the bar, bracing himself before he crashed into the woman. After a moment, he realized how close he was and his face reddened. "Oh, uh, sorry 'bout that."

Beatrice had had enough to drink that she would not want to operate a vehicle, but not so much that she didn’t have her wits about her. She could feel Jasper watch her as she danced, but instead of making her feel odd, she felt rather warm and fuzzy from it. Being with Jasper while they were at school had been easy, natural even, though their backgrounds were as similar as night was to day. She had always felt she could be her true self around him; excitable to a fault on her interests, curious, with a stubborn streak a mile wide. He had never treated her differently for being Muggleborn even before they started dating, and it had never been part of the reason they broke up after graduation. Why had they broken up? Dancing with him that night, Beatrice couldn’t remember the reasons. There had been some she supposed, but right now she couldn’t think of them.
As he braced himself from a jostle of a drunk bar patron, Beatrice found herself nearly nose to nose with Jasper. She felt her cheeks warm, and was privately glad of the heat of the room so she had that as an excuse. She locked eyes with him, barely breaking, knowing she should look away but finding herself quite unable to. Distantly in the background, she heard a countdown start - goodness was it nearly midnight already. “It’s bad luck if you….” she trailed off and before she could really wrap her mind about what she was doing, her body reacted. When the countdown reached zero, she closed the distance between them and kissed Jasper fully on the lips.
