7 January 2026 Only yesterday Bianca had been telling Rhys it was better not to get separated, but she inevitably found herself alone. Some members of Heliopath had made a camp by the shipwrecks so they could explore the island over the course of several days, and after being tied up on the mainland Bianca had finally joined them yesterday. She’d started exploring a section of the north with the cursebreaker, searching for artifacts as they dodged the creeping undergrowth. This morning Bianca had decided to return to that section of the island and begin properly mapping it out. A task that would be beneficial not only to the Ministry but to Heliopath as well. But she hadn’t made it. She had just began to pass by a lake (although the water looked anything but inviting) when the fog began to thicken around her. Bianca’s wand was in her hand almost immediately, but how could one fight fog? First it began to coil around her arms and legs, and she jerked away and began to walk more quickly, hoping to outrun it. She fired off a few spells, which naturally shot through the air and disappeared into the distance. Eventually it became harder to breathe as the fog grew thicker and thicker, and then it began to force its way down her throat. She choked, jerking to a halt and dropping her wand as her hands automatically flew to her throat in an attempt, any attempt, to breathe. Then she fell to her knees as her vision grew dimmer. And then the fog dissipated suddenly, growing thinner and thinner as it began to float lazily in the air around her as if nothing had happened at all. Bianca gagged as she forced deep breaths of air down into her lungs, falling on her hands and knees as she struggled to breathe. Her hand automatically began to hunt through the foliage for her dropped wand, although she still felt too shaky to do anything more but stay in one position and wait for the world to stop spinning. “…what…” she croaked out, trying to speak but unable to force anything more except that first word out. anastasia marie karkaroff

Faces from my past return Another lesson yet to learn It had been an interesting experience, this island. That feeling of strange magic encompassing her never left, and she had decided to separate from her group. It wasn't something wise to do, but between their incessant chatter and she swore that she kept hearing a small bell. But every time she turned to hear where it came from, it would stop, maybe it was just ringing in her ears, but she couldn't quite figure it out. There was a part of her wondering if this island was making her go slowly mad, and it only further infuriated her because she kept pushing away the thought that she just might be losing her mind as her mother was. Still, the thought made her chuckle if only because now she was turning into her mother's daughter--just as her mother always wanted. She made her way through a forest, only hearing the bell once but otherwise only the crunching of the small branches and leaves beneath her boots. It had been a strange experience. She'd been here on New Year's Eve when the Ministry had called all hands on deck, but it hadn't taken long for a strange fog--a mist to envelop her and Sarah. The magic she had felt--it was unlike anything she'd ever experienced. When she exited the forest, she found an unfamiliar place, a lot of fog, but it was less dense if she turned to the right. It wasn't a difficult choice which path to take, but after a few steps, she found that she was near a body of water. Wand at the ready, per usual, she heard some rustling up ahead. It was probably one of the many new creatures she had seen on the island, though so far nothing that was incredibly harmful. When she approached further, she saw something--no, someone hunched over. She paused and approached from the side where she could get a better vantage point, and also, when she finally saw whose face it was, she relaxed, and her apprehension turned to concern. "Bianca?" She asked, holstering her wand. She looked as though she was struggling to breathe. She took a few steps forward and knelt. If there was one person she considered a 'friend' at work, it was Bianca, though she wondered what she was doing out here all by herself. "What happened? What is this place?" She asked, looking around. It was clearly a lake, but it was hard to see exactly what else was around with all the vegetation and growth, but she did do a double-take when she saw what was either a small piece of a branch or...a wand. It wouldn't have been a far stretch of the imagination if Bianca had tripped. Many of them, including Ana herself, had done so, especially in the foggier parts they had encountered. The fog here was different, it seemed to hover thinly over the lake, but she would look at that later. Standing up, she walked over and picked up the stick. It was, in fact, a wand, and she went back to her friend. It probably wasn't the best time for a joke, but Ana couldn't help it. "How do you expect you to catch inmates when you can't even hold on to your wand?" She mumbled, kneeling again.

Bianca fought down a rising sense of panic, even as it slowly became easier to breathe. Her hand was still searching through the undergrowth for her wand, and every second that she couldn’t find it only reminded her of the last time she’d been separated from it. Except then, she hadn’t been kneeling on the forest floor, but on the cold concrete of a London street…Bianca resisted the urge to whimper as she screwed her eyes shut, ignoring the flickering of the streetlights and the sound of cars passing in the distance. No, that couldn’t be right, there were no cars on the island… “Just find your wand, you’re not there, you’re not there,” Bianca began to repeat to herself in a low tone as her search turned frantic, almost ripping plants out by their roots as she continued to feel for it with her eyes shut. She couldn’t imagine there had ever been a time when she had lived without knowing about magic. A wand was a witch’s defense, so a wandless witch had nothing… It was no use knowing she wasn’t there, because it felt like it. Every emotion in her chest matched the ones from that night, and the trauma of losing her wand had seared itself into her brain…but hearing her name snapped her sharply back to reality. Bianca’s eyes shot open as she stopped breathing for a moment, before she saw a familiar face. Not too surprising that Ana Karkaroff, like most other Ministry employees, had found her way to the island. The whole island was probably swarming with Ministry workers, cursebreakers, and curious people who had started to explore after first hearing about the strange island. She should have remembered that. “…Ana?” Bianca asked dazedly, clearing her throat to remove the scratchy tone. She shakily rose to her knees, staring at her hands now covered in dirt and patches of grass. “I…the fog…” Her voice came out a little stronger now, although Bianca wasn’t sure exactly what had happened. Nor was she eager to speculate in this moment. The storm raging inside Bianca abated when she saw Ana holding her wand, and she quickly snatched it back (with much less decorum than she would usually have displayed). She couldn’t remember feeling this rattled since…probably the night she had received the news about her father. Bianca was usually so tightly controlled, she couldn’t properly remember the last time she’d been unable to hide every emotion on her face – confusion from not understanding what had just happened, fear from remembering that night, and utter relief to have her wand back in her hand. Ana’s question was clearly meant to be a jab, and Bianca had no intention of answering it. But almost immediately after Ana finished saying the last word, Bianca felt compelled to answer and the words rose to the tip of her tongue before she could stop herself. “I didn’t expect to fail so soon again…” She shut her mouth quickly, horrified she had said something so personal out-loud. What was wrong with her? Her face burned and Bianca shot back quickly, “Like you would have done better resisting the fog?” anastasia marie karkaroff

Faces from my past return Another lesson yet to learn Bianca had been mumbling something to herself, but Ana didn't catch what she said, but she looked at her friend and colleague over as she kelt and Ana crouched down. This island appeared to be taking a toll on even those she considered the best and most capable. She spoke her name in recognition, but then Ana was distracted by that damn sound again, that bell. It had to be the magic here because up until the second she had stepped on that crimson beach, she'd begun to hear it. And there was no way she was losing her marbles as her mother was. She wouldn't accept that. 'The fog...' She spoke softly, but Ana felt her body stiffen. That damn fog, there was fog on most of the island, but it had been...different than the rest of the fog she had encountered so far. Though she hadn't been to all of the islands, she had no sense of what else was here. She had been in a slight daze at the thought of that fog when she was brought back by the forceful action of Bianca retrieving her wand from her hand. "The fog...."' Ana paused for a moment before forcing herself to pay attention again. Standing up, she extended a hand out to help Bianca up off the ground. They were no use to anyone, let alone one another on the ground. In the meantime, she glanced around. This place was new. There wasn't much of a fog layer as there was some layer on the body of water, but there was something about it. Bianca responded quickly to Ana's question faster than her usual tone, so she was taken back for a moment, "Again?" She asked, what had this poor girl been doing on this island seemingly alone. Ana was here for Ouroboros purposes--naturally, but she had a Ministry cover. But then Bianca parried back with her own question, and normally Ana would have scoffed and shaken her head, but she spoke instead, "I didn't." And Ana shook her head. She didn't mean to admit that. "I mean, I ran into some strange.....fog on the beach when we first arrived." She admitted timidly. "Why are you by yourself anyway?" She asked, her tone almost back to normal as she crossed her arms.

Bianca’s face burned with shame at the knowledge that she’d been caught in a position of such unmasked vulnerability. Especially by someone as collected and put-together as Ana Karkaroff. They had only been coworkers for the last few years, after Bianca’s transfer from the Auror Office to Magical Interpol. But she had always noticed, and admired, how the other woman could take control of any situation. Ana exuded a cool confidence, a knowledge that she would have the full attention of whatever room she walked into. She was clearly an insider, an indisputable part of this world. Meanwhile Bianca had spent the last few years hastily putting herself back together again after her entire world had been shaken down to its foundation. However much it had been buried, there was still an undeniable part of Bianca that was a people-pleaser. That couldn’t stand to let down those she admired. So when Ana offered her hand to help Bianca up, she ignored it in favor of pushing herself off the ground and onto shaky legs. She wiped her hands on her jacket, although she kept her wand clutched tightly in her hand instead of holstering it like Ana had. Bianca was starting to hate the sight of the fog swirling around them in a never-ending haze, and she clenched her jaw when Ana repeated Bianca’s earlier halting words. “It’s not just fog,” Bianca observed gruffly. “It can’t be. Sometimes it acts like it has a mind of its own…” She thought back to how the fog had begun to swirl rapidly around her before lingering on her skin and entering her nose and mouth. She tore herself away from the thought forcefully. She had been avoiding eye contact with Ana – a force of habit after everything she had learned about Legilimency – but the woman’s unusually honest answer earned a speculative look from Bianca. As did the timid tone Bianca had never heard Ana use before. Bianca had an answer ready when Ana asked why she was by herself – this was a common question, so Bianca always had several excuses about being separated from the group or receiving an order to investigate something further. As a Ministry employee, she had plenty of opportunities to use her position for Heliopath business, with only the occasional person wondering why she was there. But she couldn’t seem to bring herself to actually say any of them, and instead admitted, “I work better alone. I like it that way.” It wasn’t a lie, but it was never something she would admit out-loud. When she spoke again, her tone was authoritative, although there was a slight tremor to her voice. “Ana, tell me you also feel...off. Tell me I’m not going crazy.” anastasia marie karkaroff

Faces from my past return Another lesson yet to learn Ana was irritated by the current situation. Whatever force the magic here placed on all the visitors seemed to leave them from being their best. She didn't feel as sharp as she normally did, tripping over the smallest things and the random noises she kept hearing. It frustrated her, and she hoped word of it never reached her brother, or she would never hear the end of it or never cease to roll her eyes at the smirk of amusement he would constantly wear until she finally stopped resisting the urge to hex him. Bianca refused her hand, and Ana slightly rolled her eyes. As someone who came from a very proud background, she could recognize pride when she saw it. And though she would likely never head her own advice, this was not the time nor the place to let pride get in the way of survival. Bianca's words struck a nerve. That had been what she had observed as well but hadn't been able to really describe, nor had she really wanted to for fear of sounding absolutely insane to her colleagues. But it was a relief to receive some validation for what she had seen, and she knew Bianca was not someone who spoke for the sake of speaking or just to be heard. She was also bluntly honest at times, which Ana could appreciate as a trait. "Yes, there's something here..." Ana spoke out loud, absent-mindedly but also not as loud as her normal speaking voice. The fog had encircled her and Sarah in a part of the island that just wasn't foggy, so it had seemed like some obvious magic at work. She shook her head. What was wrong with her? She was never one to speak without thinking. Ever. Controlling her thoughts was one of her priorities at all times, but it seemed to be failing her. Bianca responded quickly. Whether it was the intention or not, they both seemed to be snapping at one another in terms of the speed of how they answered. It was unlike the pair and had Ana not worked with Bianca for some time now. She might not have noticed the difference. Ana didn't respond. She could appreciate the mindset of work alone when she herself was the only person she could truly trust even among her family, but it didn't stop her from responding--despite her best intention. "Well, that's a foolish thing to do here." Merlin save her sanity if she couldn't stop her mouth from opening to speak every thought that popped into her head. What in the world was happening to her control? Ana closed her eyes and took a frustrated breath but then opened them suddenly when she heard that bell again. "Please tell me you heard that?" It was the first time that she'd admitted out loud that she had heard something, but she also hadn't wanted to question her own mind and what she may or may not have been hearing at that point. But Bianca had her own question, and she hadn't wanted to answer and instead wanted to think it through in terms of her time spent on the island. "I think we all do. I know I do. I don't understand this place."

It was unnerving hearing her suspicions confirmed out-loud. It was the first time in her life that Bianca couldn’t trust her instincts, because her composure had been unraveling slowly from the moment she first stepped onto the island. Her mentors had always warned her during Auror training – don’t doubt your instincts. Don’t hesitate or it could cost you everything. Sometimes even that couldn’t save you, but it was still sound advice and Bianca believed wholeheartedly in the need to be decisive. It had saved her too, that night in London. Walking down the dark street, feeling a chill as she glanced slightly over one shoulder. Making the decision to have her wand in her hand instead of holstered. There was something about this island that kept taking her back to that night, and Bianca hated how weak it made her feel. But she exhaled slowly at the thought that Ana must be feeling it too. Bianca had been examining the swirling fog, but at Ana’s comment she turned sharply to narrow her eyes at her. She’d seen Ana push back on other Ministry employees occasionally, but the piercing tone was usually a result of being provoked. Ana certainly never spoke to her like that, and it seemed so out-of-place. Exactly as out-of-place as every other odd thing that had happened on this island. Merlin, Bianca hated it here. And anyway, Ana was currently as alone as she was, wasn’t she? It irritated Bianca to be called foolish. “You don’t seem to be in a better position yourself,” Bianca snapped back. She clenched her jaw when she realized that last observation had been out-loud. She couldn’t say she wasn’t being herself exactly, because she did believe that…but it wasn’t like her to say it out-loud. Especially to someone she generally got along with. Maybe she was going crazy. Maybe this island was making her crazy. Bianca inhaled sharply and turned to examine the treeline as Ana asked if she heard ‘that.’ She couldn’t sense any change in their environment, however. In fact, the whole area was deathly silent – no sound of creatures, or water from the eerily glowing lake, or anything else. Bianca turned back to appraise Ana. The words felt almost like they were being pulled out of her. “No,” she said firmly, clutching her wand tightly. “No, I didn’t hear anything. But…I don’t trust what I hear or see. Sometimes it feels like I’m being toyed with. Reminds me of my Occlumency training…” Her old captain had repeatedly attacked Bianca’s mind with Legilimency to prepare her. The exercise was grueling, and it had always worn her out and left her feeling raw. He’d been able to pull just about anything from her until she’d learned to repel the magic. She couldn’t say she felt much differently now than when she’d been a young trainee. anastasia marie karkaroff

faces from my past return another lesson yet to learn Bianca seemed equally frustrated by this entire situation and their individual predicaments. They were both blunt people, getting directly to the point and pushing towards optimal efficiency at all times. It was what had moved Ana to begin respecting Bianca, unlike her true feelings for some of her Ministry counterparts. At this very moment, however, they were both snapping at one another, and she wasn’t sure if it was their sour moods, the island’s magic, or exhaustion. Perhaps a mix of it all as Ana knew she was endlessly irritated by this noise she kept hearing and how the longer she stayed on this island, the longer she felt out of control of her own mind. Bianca’s response was quick and made Ana look at her sharply. She wasn’t an imbecile for her to be spoken to like that. She immediately felt her annoyance flair up. ”Well I’m certainly in a better position than you were just a minute ago.” For Merlin’s sake. This was growing pettier and pettier with each passing moment. Ana figured her exhaustion was catching up to her, and her control over her mouth that had been ingrained in her as a young girl was almost wholly lost. She closed her eyes and ran a hand over her face, pretending it would do anything.
Bianca searched for the noise she had just heard but then responded that she hadn’t heard anything. Ana felt more frustrated. Even with a witness, there was no sign of what had caused it. And she was also annoyed that she had admitted out loud that she had heard something. ”I keep hearing a noise here. I can’t figure out where it’s from.” She muttered before she could stop herself. This rambling was wholly uncharacteristic, and she could already picture her brother’s face and his comments at her complete lack of composure. However, after she had closed her eyes and taken a deep breath, they opened back up quickly. ’Occlumency’. Though it wasn’t uncommon to hear about an Auror or Interpol agent in the training process, people rarely spoke about it. She supposed it was a skill one wanted to keep secret, like a hidden weapon. Ana meant to pause and gather a response but instead spoke in a low tone of voice. ”I know what you mean…” It was not an easy training, and some just did not have the mental fortitude. She supposed she shouldn’t be surprised that Bianca had been able to withstand the training, though from what Ana knew Bianca had been at, what amounted to an Interpol desk job for the past few years. When had she done this training?

Bianca locked her jaw in irritation at Ana’s reminder of the exact situation she had found Bianca in. She wanted to snap back that it was unusual, a byproduct of this island and its strange environment...but the words wouldn’t quite leave her mouth. In fact, she found herself doubting that fact even as she turned the thought over in her head. Maybe this island didn’t pretend anything – maybe it only exposed what already existed and had been hidden by a thin gilded layer of denial. Bianca couldn’t be sure that it was an isolated incident – to be found on her knees, separated from her wand and at the mercy of whatever being had put her there. God, after all these years of pretending she was strong…was she really that weak? She gripped her wand tightly and turned away slightly from Ana, unwilling for the other woman to see the hint of doubt in her eyes. This damn island – keeping her in a constant state of imbalance, caught in the constant feeling that she was a stranger here. Its twisted magic was almost tangible in the air, flowing through the breeze and the plants and every living thing she had encountered. Sometimes it was only a feeling in the back of her mind, and other times it was an almost electric feeling – goosebumps on her arms, a bad taste in her mouth. Ana admitted that she continued to hear a noise from an unknown source, and Bianca cast her gaze around the immediate environment to search for any potential sources. “Describe the noise?” Bianca asked, although her tone came out flat so it ultimately sounded more like a statement than a question. She usually would have spared Ana her harsh demeanor, but…she couldn’t deny the slight resentment she felt at what appeared to be Ana questioning her capabilities. Ana’s murmured agreement was enough to force Bianca to turn back and gaze sharply at Ana. Another Occlumens? It wouldn’t surprise her – besides the fact that Occlumency was a useful skill for Ministry employees in sensitive positions, everything about Ana’s background suggested a desire to keep other people away from her business. Bianca was certain that Ana had secrets she didn’t want anybody to come close to. And the most interesting facet of Occlumency…the ability to present false memories if a Legilimens tried to break into their mind. It was the primary reason Bianca refrained from using that skill too often. “Private person, are you?” she asked in a bitingly sarcastic tone, before a faint glowing distracted her…from the water? She turned without another word to glance at what appeared to be a glowing lake – something Bianca had not noticed while she had been busy escaping the fog. She forgot her animosity with Ana for a second at the strange sight. “Ana, look at the water…” she trailed off uncertainly, keeping a close grip on her wand as she edged closer. She had never seen anything quite like it before. anastasia marie karkaroff

faces from my past return another lesson yet to learn Ana tried to concentrate on what the noise sounded like exactly. It was familiar, but she hadn’t been able to pinpoint it since it was only audible for a moment at best. Between that and the magic around them, like a slight weight you couldn’t take off your shoulders. It reminded her of the heavy cloaks they were issued back in her school days, heavy on her small frame at the time but necessary for the weather. Perhaps that’s what bothered Ana the most. She couldn’t stand tall here on this island. Her dominance and confidence had been wavering ever since her boots touched that red sand. Still, the Ministry needed information, and an ‘all hands on deck’ situation was not one that she would walk away from without some damage to her reputation. Ouroboros also needed information, so even if the Ministry didn’t send her Cas would have dragged her right back.
She closed her eyes for a moment. ”It reminds me….of a ringing?” She thought out loud, though as if she was asking herself the question. Bianca’s tone didn’t go unnoticed, but Ana didn’t have the mental focus to worry about that and the noise at the same time. ”Reminds me of home…” She found herself muttering, but she shook her head to shake the thought, why had it popped into her head? Wait. That was it. Like the bell her mother had to summon the servants. She would ring that tiny bell until the body risked flying off the small handle she always held neatly between her thumb and forefinger. Ana’s brow furrowed as the realization came to her. ”A bell. It sounds like a bell.” She looked at her colleague, clearly bothered by this. She actively avoided anything that reminded her of home.
However, very quickly, Ana averted her gaze again. It wasn’t a strange event by any means to have Occlumens in the Ministry of Magic or any form of Magical Law Enforcement, but typically it was a detail kept to one’s self. In Ana’s mind, it made on a target, as if to claim any Occlumency training was asking for someone to try and probe your mind just to see if they could. She supposed she shouldn’t be surprised that Bianca also had training, but she didn’t always find muggle-born witches or wizards who found the training independently. Who had trained her? Ana looked back at Bianca, her unemotional expression having returned. ”I could ask the same.” A flat tone, but equally as sarcastic. It wasn’t something she wanted to further discuss but had it not been for Bianca’s next interruption, she wouldn’t have been able to stop herself from asking anyway.
Taking a few steps toward Bianca and the body of water they were next to so she could observe it. It wasn’t like anything she had seen before. Ana focused, it looked like water, but something was rising from it. She swallowed. It reminded her of her Potions classes in her school days. She noted the metallic taste in her mouth, reminiscent of some fights from her younger years. ”Water doesn’t do that…” Obviously, Ana felt stupid for even have spoken, but this wasn’t something that looked natural to her.

Bianca was tempted to bite back with a scathing comment as Ana deliberated out-loud about the source of the mysterious noise. A bell that reminded her of home? Ana looked troubled at the thought, likely a result of hearing such a strange noise in the middle of the wilderness – and a sound that Bianca couldn’t hear at all. Details about Ana’s home life didn’t usually come up, not when both women preferred to keep their dynamic professional, but they were always made dispassionately. And there was never any tension because of it. Bianca viewed the whole pureblood system as a strange, outdated machine. Purebloods could cling to it as tightly as they wanted, but it was eventually doomed to fail. Still, today, now? The casual observation bothered Bianca. It was so against everything she’d lacked growing up, the constant state of anxious worry about money and depressed resignation she’d left her mother in. She and Ana got along well, at least outside the bounds of an island that appeared to be testing their every limit. But there were also times when she seemed like a complete stranger. But she knew how to put the job before everything else. In some ways, she was too talented at that fact, since it tended to overwhelm and unbalance every other part of her life. She’d suffered for it…but could it really be called suffering if she had willingly chosen it? At any rate, Bianca knew better than to let personal grudges affect her work in the field. It was too dangerous here to get distracted, and the sight of glowing water was just unnerving enough to make her forget everything else. She had come here for Heliopath and the Ministry, mostly in that order, and she intended to deliver results. “No kidding…” Bianca murmured at Ana’s observation that water doesn’t do that, but she bit her lip and approached cautiously without saying anything further. Out of all the tools that Bianca had brought to do her job – her Invisibility Cloak, her wand, even the notes she’d been taking – nothing could have prepared her for this. It wasn’t quite in her usual job description – really, Bianca was more useful in a firefight or investigation. She wouldn’t have sent an Auror to investigate glowing water, more likely one of those research types that had read about everything, even if they’d never experienced it themselves. That lack of real world common sense still would have had more use than a set of witches who worked best with their wands. Bianca approached cautiously, wand gripped tightly in her hand as she slowly inched towards the bank of the lake. She didn’t trust the water – or the island – enough to try and touch it, so her gaze instead scanned the far side of the lake. No sign of creatures or plants near the water, another sign that trying to touch it was a bad idea. It was one of the first things Aurors were taught to take in about their surroundings, after all – the locals always knew best. Better to follow their lead. “Is there anything on this island that won’t try and kill us?” Bianca muttered darkly as she reluctantly lowered her wand. The water looked dangerous, but she wasn’t inclined to try shooting a spell at it. No, this would require a different kind of strategy. One that required more than simple coordination with Ana. She stepped away slightly, turning to look back at her Interpol coworker. “I’m making a note of this lake. This isn’t just water…a team should be sent to investigate.” A properly equipped team. Because there was something not quite right here – beyond the obvious. This interaction with Ana didn’t sit right in her stomach, it didn’t reflect the usual mutual respect that could be found between the pair. Bianca could just chalk it up to the odd flavor of the island, but her gut told her it was something more. And she hated leaving even a single stone unturned. anastasia marie karkaroff [End post Bianca!]
