welcome to the soldier side where there's no one here but me The Poisoned Spindle, the latest addition to the Ouroborus effort. She knew it was a convenient location for many parties involved, including herself, at the Ministry and her brother, not a few shops away. This time of year was always a bit hectic. The end of the year and the holidays brought crowds, and with crowds came crimes. The last large crowd the Wizarding world saw over the summer had ended in a terrible tragedy, and the Ministry now marked with the reputation of being unable to protect its own Ministry. Aside from the loss of their leader, it had just been embarrassing on that front. Ana had her own opinions, naturally, about the entire ordeal, and one of them chiefly being that despite their best efforts to organize, they might be able to do more from the shadows. It was a small point of disagreement between Ana and her older brother but not large enough to cause major strife. On all fronts, they were united. And any discord was a failure in their push forward on their agendas for their family and for this group. Since Ana had been brought into the group, her network of associates had grown significantly, though some of them she already knew through work. She got along with a few faces, even respected while others she tolerated, or found a way to deal with them that was marginally tolerable. She didn't expect many people to come through the safe house today. The Ministry was panicking slightly, still at the announcement of a Christmas party hosted by the Windsors. That number of people, magical and muggle, was far too familiar a situation so soon. Ana and Cas had discussed the event. They would be in attendance, of course, pretending to be the perfect Pureblood children and doing what they were trained to do on those occasions, but she had been asked to keep an eye out by her superiors but so had the rest of Law Enforcement. Ana sat in an armchair, flipping through a book left on the side table--it was about some Dark Artifacts from the Middle East. Most likely, one of her brother's books, but she was just killing time. The only reason she had stopped by was to drop off some information regarding some work that her brother was planning, and this seemed the safest place to leave it until he was able to retrieve it. Closing the book with a loud thump. She set it back on the table and stood up, and checked her wristwatch for the time. Though she quickly turned with her wand out when she heard a voice speak from somewhere behind her. The perfect dueling stance, as she had practiced over so many years now, this stranger picked the wrong day to walk into this safehouse (that was supposedly charmed and enchanted in every direction by her brother). She didn't immediately attack, and only because she knew that access to this part was limited, but nobody would ever claim Ana to be a trusting person by any means. "And you are?" Ouroboros may have had its share of trained Curse Breakers and Law Enforcement Ministry personnel, but none could match up to Ana when it came to a duel.

When Jack had received the invitation from Parvati to join the Ouroboros, he had been... well, shocked that such a group existed but that feeling quickly faded because he should have realised that there was a group actively trying to prevent Dark Wizards from unleashing pure and utter chaos on the wizarding world. It was to be expected, really. When Voldemort was in his prime, a group of kids had joined together to form Dumbledore's Army - himself included - and naturally, when a group of Dark Wizards were trying to raise hell twenty-something years after the war, people weren't just going to sit idly by. Nobody with a conscious and good morals wanted to see history repeat itself. Apparating into Knockturn Alley was unsettling, but Parvati had told him of the existence of The Poisoned Spindle, a place for Ouroboros members to congregrate, and Jack was intent on finding it. He wanted to talk to other members of the group, to introduce himself as someone who wanted to help. Although Jack didn't like to think of himself as a braggart, he was aware that he had a certain skillset that would be an asset to the other members - he'd been trained in Defense Against the Dark Arts and Dueling for over twenty years now. It was his passion and something he was incredibly skilled at. If he could pass any of his knowledge on to anyone in the Ouroboros and help them out in case they ever got stuck in an undesirable position, he would be more than happy to. Finally locating The Poisoned Spindle - hidden behind the Apothecary, how clever - a small smile graced Jack's lips. The directions he'd been given were correct, and he had found what he was looking for. Stepping into the room, Jack quickly found himself on the receiving end of a demand from a young woman who was standing in a way that was instantly recognisable. "Jack. Jack O'Connor. Dueling Professor from Hogwarts. Parvati sent me," he replied. He had no real evidence to support the claim of who he was, but hopefully this woman would take his word for it. Clearing his throat, Jack returned the woman's question. He wanted to ensure that she, herself, was actually a Ouroboros before mentioning the group - he'd hate to out them if she wasn't one. "And you are?"

welcome to the soldier side where there's no one here but me Her brother had mentioned a new recruit to the group, and while Ana welcomed the help, she was also naturally suspicious. Still, she tended to trust her brother when he trusted someone. Ana wasn't as close to Parvati, and unfortunately, since she was at the School and she was at the Ministry, their interactions had been limited, but Cas trusted her, so in effect, so did she. The stranger responded quickly, and Ana's gaze or questioning expression didn't change for a moment, but then she lowered your wand. All her training at the Ministry, her training to survive in Pureblood society, and Occlumency practice had taught her to spot an obvious liar quickly, and this stranger did not appear to be lying. Ana lowered her wand and resumed a normal standing position, and the stranger--Jack asked her the same question she had asked him. "Ana. Ana Karkaroff." She responded simply but with a bit of emphasis on her last name. Her wand was still in her hand at her side. She was always watching how people reacted to 'Karkaroff.' "My brother informed me you would be stopping by." He was tall, looked older than even Cas with striking blue eyes. And a dueling professor at that. That fact piqued her interest. Pausing another moment, she crossed her arms--a habit of hers when standing and shifted her weight to one leg. "So, dueling?" Ana asked curiously. Her personal opinion of the different members was that, for the most part, it was a lot of brains and not a lot of brawn. While Cas could hold his own in a duel, he was more useful behind the scenes, while Ana didn't mind a fight or a good duel. "How do you know Parvati?" Ana had many questions. This Jack was trustworthy according to Parvati, but Ana needed to form her own opinion.

Jack watched the woman carefully as he gave her the answer to who he was, prepared to draw his own wand if need be. Naturally, he didn't want things to escalate if he could prevent it but he knew he was more than capable of defending himself if worse came to worse. Luckily, it didn't and the stranger lowered her wand, shifting into a stance that didn't scream ' let's duel' like her previous one had. Jack's own body mirrored her actions, relaxing a little. The name Karkaroff had Jack's brows furrowing for a split second. It was instinct, hearing the surname of a Death Eater who contributed to the pain and devastation caused by the Second Wizarding War, but Jack knew by now that judging people based on the part their family played in the war... it wasn't fair. He could guess, as well, from the attentive nature Ana had displayed so far, that she hadn't missed the way he'd reacted to her surnname. It was better to address that, then leave it awkwardly sitting between them. "You'll have to forgive me - that's a name I haven't heard in a while. I'm assuming that since you're here, you have different beliefs than your predecessors," Jack said, offering Ana a small nod. "Dueling, yes. I was the Defense Against the Dark Arts professor before I transitioned into that role, but dueling is something I've been doing for a very long time. I mean, one glance at the lines on my face would tell you that," Jack said, his voice transforming into something more light and joking, blue eyes twinkling all the while. "And what do you do for work? Judging by the way you so quickly drew your wand and are playing twenty questions, I'd guess you're connected to the Ministry in some way - an Auror, perhaps?"
Speaking of questions, Jack slid into the room a bit further and made himself comfortable on a nearby chair, relaxing into it and gesturing with his hand for Ana to do the same, if she was so inclined. If she was going to continue to quiz him, he at least wanted to be comfortable. He'd been on his feet almost all day. "I work with Parvati, but I've known her for much longer. I was a year below her in school - we both fought in the war alongside Dumbledore's Army," Jack replied easily. Once upon a time, it had been difficult for him to speak so openly about that period of his life, but nowadays... he welcomed questions regarding the war. He wanted to educate, for people to be aware of what that time was like.

welcome to the soldier side where there's no one here but me Ana could see the slight change in his expression when she had mentioned her name. It was expected, and she would have been more concerned if he hadn’t reacted in some way. She could imagine what her brother might have gone through when he first joined such an organization. Although he hadn’t shared all the details, he had met enough of the members and knew who they were to come to a conclusion. Still, the man was quick to apologize. It was a curious reaction, but perhaps he was just a friendly person or not trying to stir up trouble. Not the approach she typically took, her brother had once referred to her process as that of a “steamroller”—though she just preferred to think she was to the point and efficient. She gave him a look as if to express, ‘what do you think?’ But she knew that he was a friend of the Squad Leaders, and if there was anything she carried from her youth, it was her manners. ” It’s not a problem, nothing I’m not used to.” She paused a moment and put her wand away—for now. ”If you are referring to that blood purity nonsense, then you are correct.”
It indeed was nonsense. If Ana was to be “better” than anyone, it would be because she had outright earned it. She worked hard to achieve what she had and trained even harder to be the best, and the benefit of being one of the best in dueling in Interpol was that she was hardly stuck behind a desk all day. Her superiors would rather have her out in the field, just as Ana preferred. The tension that had been in the air for a brief moment seemed to dissipate quickly. He didn’t seem to hold a grudge that she’d pointed a wand at his face and threatened to hex him through a wall. So far, he handled things much differently than she would have. She nodded. He was almost correct. ”Almost. I work for Interpol. International Crime Task Force.” While her training and job were similar to that of an Auror, it was a matter of jurisdiction at that point. ”We take the Auror’s cases when borders are crossed.” It was the most straightforward explanation she could think of, but also, they were brought in when the ‘big guns’ were needed, as it were. Ana followed Jack’s lead and took a seat near him, but also shook her head a bit at a thought.
”So Hogwarts teaches its students dueling? Durmstrang had less of an organized approach.” She mused, her dueling there had been taught more or less whenever a student felt the need to try and hex her or bully her in some way. It had made her reliably fast, sharp in her reactions, but it had been hard to learn more “proper” techniques when she had gotten older. Jack began to recall how he knew her brother’s fellow squad leader, and while Ana had not interacted with Parvati at length, her brother seemed to respect and trust her—which was enough for her. She gave a slow nod in acknowledgment. This man was of that generation. Even Ana had to admit she felt a certain amount of respect of that era, these school-aged children standing up and fighting against such a force as the Death Eaters. She had heard stories at school but more when she had come to the U.K. as history was always a bit different wherever one traveled to. ”I see…” She paused. ”Well, a pleasure to meet you, Jack.” She had to regain her manners after having almost attacked him.
