scared of my own ceiling scared I'll die of uncertainty Addy thought about the letter's contents she had received, not a few days after the first day of the fall term. Her parents were suggesting she look for similar career solutions as her sister, it had been a conversation that had been ongoing for a few years now, and while Addy could smile and agree with their reasoning, she struggled to wonder if it was truly what she wanted to pursue. For now, she focused on completing her assignments ahead of time, Quidditch practice, the Chess club, and looking forward to the first Hogsmeade weekend. Unlike some of her classmates, her homework was completed or at least ahead of schedule, so it was stress-free on that front. Plus, she was craving a Butterbeer. As she walked down with some of her friends, chatting away and listening to the latest seventh-year gossip, she had a smile despite what may have been bothering her. Her brother had promised to stop by and visit, and she was looking forward to seeing him. She separated from her friends who wanted to head Honeydukes as she had an appointment to keep after all. By her account, she was precisely on time. She'd made the walk down to the village enough over the years to know the time of when she had to leave the castle and when she would arrive with a small margin of error. She walked in and paused a moment to scan the room for the familiar face, and she found him quickly. Her brother's dark and slightly messy hair--a contrast to her and her sister's neatly styled blonde hair. She walked over with a smile on her face. While all three of them were competitive in their own personal goals, there was still some love between them. He must have arrived a few minutes early as Addy wasn't the type to be late. "Hey, Grey."

▲ This was easily going to be the last free weekend he had for the next several months. The Quidditch season started up again at the end of October, but that didn’t mean the run up to it was going to be easy. Pre-season interviews with each team, their managers, owners, fans – literally anyone you could think of that was related to the teams. Most of the questions his editor wanted him to ask pertained to the accident over the summer, as if they weren’t all there to witness it. He had gotten out relatively unscathed, but mentally it had been a lot. The follow up interviews and articles he had been forced to write weren’t nearly his best work. He liked being a beat reporter. On the ground during matches, running stats after, and then providing that in his pieces at the back of the sports section in the Prophet. Having his name plastered on the bigger articles, albeit under the senior reporters, didn’t feel right to him. They didn’t suit what he wanted to do. Regardless, he was free this weekend, and he had agreed to meet Addy at the Three Broomsticks to catch up. He had gotten there about an hour ahead of their scheduled time, mostly because he wanted to be able to find a table. Even though it had been almost two years since he had graduated, he still knew the tricks when it came to securing one of the prized seating locations. To make it better, he brought work with him, and spread it across the chairs as well, hoping that it would prevent students from snagging the empty ones from him. He relented one to a group of Gryffindors that he recognized, but only because they asked nicely, but the other two remained closely guarded and covered by a jacket and his work bag full of stats paperwork. “Hey,” he said back to his sister as she approached the table. “Hold on, let me clear this up a bit first…” he added as he jumped from his seat and started pulling all of the paperwork into one pile. His work desk was always a mess, and this was just an extension that followed him around everywhere. Content with the pile, he also pulled his jacket off of the one chair and threw it over the last remaining one. “Want anything to drink while I’m up?”MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

scared of my own ceiling scared I'll die of uncertainty It was clear that Grey had arrived earlier than she had expected, though with how he had taken over the table and chairs with his work, she supposed he was rather busy these days. Quidditch, one of the few shared interests between them, but she was glad it was there. When she was younger, it was easy to look at him with some side-eye and act like she would follow down his path, but even now, as she was beginning her final year at school, she was feeling the same pressure that their parents had put on all their children and how each reacted differently. Grey jumped up and cleared his paperwork into a single, neat pile. She noticed that at least one of the pages was facing a different direction than the rest, but she didn't comment on it. It wasn't her pile of papers, after all. Instead, she gave a small grin as a thank you since it was hard enough to find seating in this place on a good day, let alone with students who were visiting. "A butterbeer would be lovely." This time, her grin grew into a very grateful smile. One of her favorite treats and not something she would ever skip given the chance. Addy sat in the empty chair and removed her gloves and scarf, placing the gloves neatly on the table and slightly off to the side and casually but quickly folding up her Slytherin scarf on top of them. "Quidditch keeping you busy?" She asked, glancing at his pile of papers again. Though she had a bit more insight into what his role might have been with the paper and the upcoming season, the details were still lost on her. Maybe it was because journalism had never really crossed her mind as an interest or even an option. It still made her wonder what she even wanted to do after she graduated. She was good at many things, but picking just one to be pigeon-holed into seemed a little daunting at times. The feeling almost left her wanting to follow Brigh into Curse Breaking, though she hadn't brought up the idea to her parents yet.

▲ Butterbeer. Grey knew the answer to his question even before asking it. He had weened himself away from the drink, having not been around the Broomsticks as much as he had been during his school days. Plus it was too sticky, and drinking it while having work right next to is was asking for a disaster. While he could always make new copies of stat pages, having notes soaked in bronze liquor and sticky to the touch didn’t look professional anymore. He could get away with it whilst at the school paper since he ran the whole thing. The Prophet wasn’t as lenient. That and the sugar didn’t do it for him anymore. He was built and ran on caffeine now. So he ordered his third coffee since he had arrived at the pub. “It’s about to be,” he responded to his sister’s question about work as he pushed the overflowing, frothy butterbeer glass across the table to her. Immediately he slid the rest of his work off the table and into his bag, having watched a few butterscotch bubbles bursting over the glass edge and onto the table’s surface. That was exactly what he was trying to avoid. “They’ll have me running ragged by the first week of matches. Then it should start to even out as the season goes on.” He was talking like he had years of experience in it, but this was only his second full season working the Quidditch beat. But did he really need any more than that? It was pretty obvious that the start and end of the season were the most important, and the fans were more likely following their own team’s publicist over the Prophet. He certainly did. “Your practices haven’t started up yet, have they?” Grey inquired as he blew on his coffee to try and get it to cool down. That was on problem he had with pub coffee: it was always scalding and tasted burnt. But caffeine was caffeine. As for the school teams, he had found that it depended on each house and whoever their current captain was. During his years, he often followed the Gryffindor team down to the pitch the first full weekend of September. Gryffindor also had a lot more type-A personalities and players that wanted to go professional. He wasn’t sure if the current Slytherin team was like that or not. MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

scared of my own ceiling scared I'll die of uncertainty Addy often wondered how much her small addiction to Butterbeer would factor into her career choices after graduating. If Brígh successfully convinced her to join the Curse Breakers, how often would one find the delightful beverage when traveling to such exotic places all over the world. Grey pushed a huge mug filled to the brim toward her, and she waited a moment before taking the first sip. It was overly sweet, and the bubbles from the carbonation fizzed as the liquid moved around the glass. It was perfect. As she wiped away the small amount of foam that had lingered on her upper lip, she looked at her brother as he spoke about Quidditch. She was reminded of her best friend, whose family was very involved in Quidditch via his older brother Mickey. ”Any favorites this year?” It was a common topic in the common rooms, and during practices, every student seemed to have their favorite teams and players. Though from what she understood, muggles were quite the same with their own sports. However, in her mind hitting a ball with a stick just seemed to be creating a game only a Beater could play in. ”I suppose there isn’t much hope for the Bats this season, again?” She was reminded of the team since her best friend’s older brother played Keeper. Her brother opted for a coffee instead of Butterbeer and ignored the strong scent, it was hardly anything of quality, but she also preferred tea. Sever of her classmates drank the stuff around exam time, she noticed. Addy drank more Butterbeer and shook her head ‘no’. ”No…” She paused, a clear look of displeasure across her face. ”Our new Captain seems to be waiting to start, I’ve seen the Ravenclaw team have at least two practices.” It was still an incredibly sore point for her as she’d been pushing to be made Captain and had big plans, but alas, the universe had decided otherwise. The sting wasn’t as bad as when she’d been passed up for Prefect, but it was there nonetheless. A professional Quidditch career was also on her list of possible post-graduation careers though how she would ever bring that up to her parents was still something she hadn’t been able to plan cleanly. She knew she was a good chaser, she and Raphael discussed Quidditch quite often as he played on the Hufflepuff team though their respective positions didn’t quite have them directly competing though, at the time, she’d been tempted to knock the seeker off his broom in a close match. She shook her head again, it wasn’t how she’d planned off starting the year, and she’d remembered the angry letter she’d sent Brígh very quickly after the term had started. ”Che—Raphael says the Hufflepuff team has also had practice already.” While she’d been calling her friend by his nickname since they were eleven, she knew that most people would not know him by that name.

▲ The question regarding the upcoming season was difficult to answer. He felt like he should have known by now what the approximate outlook was – that was typically pretty easy to tell by the final few practices of the pre-season. But with how the previous season had ended, there was definitely a lot of psychological effects at play. “It’s hard to tell. With how everything ended, it’s definitely more somber than it should be.” There were new rules regarding celebrations and the amount of fans allowed as well, though he wasn’t sure how much that would truly change. The season openers were typically sold out for most teams, and even his assignment covering the Banchory Bangers and Pride of Portree would probably be packed. They weren’t even teams that were normally considered in contention. The same could be said about the Bats most of the time, but Grey felt like they had a better chance these days than ever before. “Honestly, it all comes down to their offense. That’s where they’ve struggled for years, and now that they have McLaggen as keeper, they really need to push for better chasers if they want him to stay.” McLaggen had been on Gryffindor’s house team when Grey had first started with the school paper, and then joined Ballycastle, his favorite professional team. Personality aside, it was hard to not want to cheer him on. And even then, Grey completely understood why the guy acted the way he did. While he was always going to be a Gryffindor fan through and through, he couldn’t ignore the disappointment that Addy had for not starting practice yet. Quidditch was everything to the students that played, and there were plenty on the house teams that were looking to pursue their careers in the professional scene. He wasn’t sure what his sister’s ultimate goal with Quidditch was, but by having a captain that was flippant about the sport, it automatically decreased the chances for the more hardcore Slytherin players. Technically they could practice without their captain, though he could see that as undermining their position. This was exactly why he wrote about the sport and didn’t play it. “Well, I wouldn’t be surprised if there was an outside push from his father,” Grey stated, “Cormac never shuts up about it at work.” The elder McLaggen was a senior reporter at the Prophet after all, and was one of the ones Grey had to do a lot of running around for when he had been an intern. “Especially if Hufflepuff is starting this early. I’m not sure if they ever did when I was there…”MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

scared of my own ceiling scared i'll die of uncertainty Grey took a moment to answer, though she figured he was merely trying to put his conclusions together to answer her question. Quidditch had ended on a rather terrible note this year, and she hated to think of the tragedy that befell that day. It made her sad that so many had lost their lives and that one of the few things that brought so many together in the Wizard World had been so ruined. Accidents happened, she supposed, whether they were on that scale or the smaller ones in her own life. Addy shifted to a more serious expression and slowly nodded to acknowledge him. ”Right.” She drank more of her butterbeer but avoided the foam mustache this time. There wasn’t a need to make a mess, and she was careful to not let any of it spill either on the table. Grey spoke about the Bats, and Addy listened intently. She was curious about their progress. Then again, she might have been a little bit biased as to why. She and Raphael discussed Quidditch often, but she knew how his family—his father was about the subject, though she sort of understood what that might have been like, though in her world, it was much bigger than just a sport.
”Well, they’ll need him if they can’t hold onto the quaffle.” She remarked, agreeing with her brother. Not having decent chasers was difficult on a team. It meant the Keeper had to work harder to defend from the other team, and even the Seeker had to work hard to find the snitch before they would lose due to points regardless, and Beaters could only knock out a Chaser so many times. Addy was a Chaser herself, so she understood the implications of that on a team. Quidditch was one of her favorite things about school. She enjoyed the sport and the competition even if she hated losing as much as she had in select years. Practicing with Cheese had helped both of them, though it had certainly been a different experience this term so far for them. She pushed that thought out of her mind. For now, it wasn’t something she wanted to mention, let alone think about in her older brother’s presence.
Still, her reasoning for joining Quidditch to her parents had been the possibility of being Captain and having her name on a plaque in the Trophy room when her team won the cup. But, so far, either of things had not happened, and she’d run out of chances to do so. Though she knew she played well, a career in Quidditch wasn’t a far-off possibility though she was considering something more to do with the new magical technology that was spreading through the magical world. She’d resisted the temptation to take apart her own phone as she wasn’t completely clear on how to reassemble it in terms of enchantments and charms. Addy made a face of agreement with Grey, surely it was some impossibility that Slytherin had not started practice, but the Hufflepuffs had. ”I’m sure the team will get some award for the first time Hufflepuff had ever started practice first.” Addy shook her head. It wasn’t that far into the term, but it hadn’t turned out at all as she had hoped so far.

▲ The Bats absolutely needed McLaggen if they even wanted a chance of getting through the season over .500. The problem now was that the player pool was probably going to become even narrower than it had been for the last decade or so. There were too many problems surrounding public events these days. The Triwizard incident was only the start, and while the explosion over the summer was deemed an accident and malfunction, it didn’t change the fact that people were hesitant about going to matches. And when that happened, there were less new players that wanted to go professional. He was sure at some point the Prophet would send him to Hogwarts with a group of the scouts to see what the talent there was like. Whether or not anyone other than the hardcore athletes would continue on was still a question he was seeing float about within the circles. “But every team has their weaknesses. If they made it a little less obvious that their chasers aren’t top notch, then I think they could pull the wool over the eyes of some of the lower-tier teams,” he explained. It really all came down to that. You only needed to better than the worst teams in the league, and then playoffs started to come into the picture. The more appearances a team had there, the better rookies would start drifting their way. Every sport was like that, and Quidditch was no exception there. He laughed at the idea of the Hufflepuffs cheering for a participation trophy (or something similar), simply because they started practice earlier than usual. Technically the teams had a month or so to get going, but taking advantage of the empty pitch for practice, versus the practice one, made all the difference. Or so he heard. “Who is even on Slytherin these days? Anyone I might know?” He sort of doubted it, but felt obligated to ask. Occasionally an old Gryffindor housemate had a younger sibling and he would sort of remember the person. MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

scared of my own ceiling scared i'll die of uncertainty The unfortunate accident from the summertime had affected the Magical Community greatly. The loss of life and leadership was still affecting them all in one way or another. And when it came to Quidditch, there was a natural fear of another accident. Addy had been fearful that her family had been affected or injured, but she was fortunate that they were not. She waited before drinking more of her butterbeer, avoiding chugging it as much as she wanted to. What a sight that would be. It seemed that every year brought some kind of tragedy, whether it was man-made or accidental from her own recollection. With her impending graduation, she wondered what kind of world she was walking into exactly and how to best handle it. Brígh naturally wanted to drag Addy into Curse Breaking alongside her, but she wasn’t sure about that kind of dangerous life, even if it was closer to her passion than Law Enforcement like her sister.
She nodded in agreement with her brother, Quidditch was something they bonded over, and he’d been supportive of her joining the House Team when her parents wondered why in the world she would want to do that. But in the end, Addy had campaigned that appearing to be a team player was vital in any future career, especially a Ministry one. It displayed reliability and consistency and eventually leadership if the Captaincy was hers. Still, the talk of Chasers only reminded her of her own Captain. A fellow chaser on the team. ”You’re right. If the Chasers can’t work together, they don’t stand a chance.” It was the challenge, the synchronicity of a team. The Beaters coordinating to protect their teammates and go after the other Chasers. The Chasers coordinating to ensure they had a clear path to the goals and a way around the Keeper.
Addy began listing off her teammates' names but was unsure if Grey would know any of them. ”…Blishwick, Svendsen and Weekly.” She stopped to drink more butterbeer. There was hardly any foam left on top. ”There’s two Weekly’s, Americans, one of them is a Chaser and Captain and the other Seeker.” It was an interesting family. They were all named after a day of the week and were spread out across all Houses and fifth, sixth, and seventh years. ”I don’t think any of the others play on the other House teams, Raphael would have told me if any had joined Hufflepuff’s team.” She mused out loud. Though her friends had been quick to come to her defense when the new Captain had been announced.

▲ The crazy thing about professional Quidditch was the fact that there were still issues between teammates at that level. One would think that they would be able to get over their differences and egos once they reached top tier play like that, but it really only got worse. The fact that professional Quidditch teams had chaser squads that could go entire games without properly communicating with each other absolutely baffled him when he was first put on the Quidditch beat. Of course there was also the difference between teams that needed that sort of communication and the ones where the players were so elite that they simply knew what their teammates were thinking and doing. That usually showed up at the end of the season when it came to playoffs. When it came to the Bats, since they were the team that was brought up in the first place, Grey was positive that it had more to do with their experience. The team was young, the chasers and keeper especially, so it made sense that they struggled a little bit against veteran squads. Years of play did mean something in Quidditch, and game knowledge paid off in wins. The Slytherin team only had a few recognizable names, Blishwick namely since he saw the ad for the services in the Prophet every morning. Jimbo Blishwick flashing his pearly whites while adjusting his bow-tie incessantly. Grey was sure that he was a good guy, as he couldn’t recall Jimmie ever speaking ill of her father whenever they were working at the school paper. As for this specific Blishwick in Slytherin, he assumed that had to have been a cousin, since he knew Jimmie was an only child. As for the Weeklys, he shrugged. “Those Weeklys must be pretty decent to have one named Captain and the other a Seeker in just a year,” he commented before taking a long sip of his drink. “What do you mean by that? There are enough of them to have one in each house?” By that count, there had to be at least five of them. Americans liked having large families apparently. MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

scared of my own ceiling scared i'll die of uncertainty Addy had to admit the Slytherin team wasn’t what it used to be when she’d joined the team had been well practiced although older than herself. She filled spots from students that had just graduated and had to find a way to ingrain herself into the group. It had been difficult being so young and full of ambition. Part of her success had been learning to pause and take a step back and find that acceptance rather than steamroll her way in. And then, she had a better footing as she learned to work with her teammates, and then the upperclassman graduated, and new members joined the team. By the time Addy was in her fifth year, she was sure she was on the right path to leadership on the team. However, the addition of the American students had changed the dynamic not only on her team but the other House Teams as well. It had still been quite the shock when she hadn’t been named Captain.
Addy shrugged, a defeated expression creeping on her face for just a moment before she sat up straight again. She masked it, it was what she had been taught to do, and while Addy still held the grudge, she pushed through. ”There were open positions, and Wendy is a good Chaser. I just didn’t expect her to get Captain.” Sometimes, she wasn’t sure if she should be almost insulted by it, a transfer student brought in to lead her house team as if Addy wouldn’t have been sufficient or good enough to do it herself. Her jaw clenched slightly, but she forced it to relax as she drank more butterbeer. Placing her mug gently back on the table, she spoke again. ”Mum had plenty to say about it, especially after I wasn’t made a Prefect.” And to add to that event, a Greyback had gotten the badge instead. Now, Addy didn’t have an issue with Max or any of her family, but unfortunately, some still did. Grey asked about the Weeklys, and Addy paused and tried to remember how many were in each house. ”There are eight of them. The one that is our seeker is a werewolf, and the other werewolf is Hufflepuff along with another sibling with Raphael and Penny, and two more are in Gryffindor with Brigh, and one is in Ravenclaw with Dicky.” Addy paused as she counted them all in her head as she rattled off her friend’s names as well. It was an eclectic bunch for sure.

▲ He wasn’t going to start trying to guess how Captains were chosen anymore, since it never really made much sense to him when he was in school and working on the paper. The assumption, at least on his part, was that it typically went to the best player on the team. Usually that meant the Keeper or Seeker since they had strategic locations on the field. There wasn’t much a Chaser could really do in the heat of a match that could correct ongoing problems, but that was also why he didn’t play or coach the sport. From the stands it was so much easier to be an objective viewer, and he had always watched as a journalist. Now, obviously there were teams that benefited from having Chasers as Captain, and those were ones that were extremely offense heavy and fast – to the point where it didn’t matter what their defense looked like. Teams didn’t look like that at Hogwarts though. They didn’t have the personnel or skill level most of the time. Not that Addy wouldn’t make a good Captain, since it definitely seemed like it would go to her after the previous few seasons, but he had been surprised before. “Probably the school trying to make integrating the Ilvermorny students in easier. Outside of the national team, I didn’t know Americans had any interest in Quidditch,” he shrugged as he took a sip of his drink. They had Quadpot, or whatever it was called, and it was definitely a different type of game from Quidditch. His sister went on to ramble off about the Weekly family and their entire make up, dropping the names of her friends that he sort of knew but also didn’t. What really stung was that he understood what she meant about their mother not being happy about missing out on Prefect and Captain. For him it had been every other little detail. It didn’t matter that he was Editor of the school paper for a bunch of years, or that he had his name on articles in the paper. It seemed like Addy finally got a smidgen of a taste of what it was like, even though he didn’t really wish that upon her. If it had been Claire, sure. She needed to be taken down a notch or ten still. “That’s an eclectic family. They could take on the Weasleys with that many of them,” he commented. Now that, he would pay to see. Two giant families duking it out on the pitch. Especially with the skill that most of the Weasley clan had when it came to Quidditch. “Which one is Dicky again?” Grey added, as he got lost at the end. Raphael and Brígh he knew, Penny most likely being one of the Bainbridges, but Dicky had him stumped. He didn’t know many Ravenclaws to begin with, and even less now. MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

scared of my own ceiling scared i'll die of uncertainty Addy made a slight face but then returned to her regular expression. She’d watched her mother catch every eye roll or face any of them ever made over the years, and she’d learned it was best just not to. But Grey had a point, and it did make her feel better to figure that Wendy had been given Captain out of some attempt at magical school unity rather than merit. "Claire said the same thing..." The politics of the Magical world was not something for her to fully understand yet. And it wasn't that Wendy was a bad Chaser, but she and Addy were about matched in their talent—well, Addy liked to think she was far better. ”I think every team except the Gryffindor team has at least two transfers.” Addy thought through the rosters and who she knew that was still on the teams, pending any new try-outs or replacements she hadn’t been made aware of yet. Brigh and Cheese typically kept her in the loop on the happenings of their team, though Cheese tried not to tell her too much but it wasn’t hard to get him to spill when she wanted inside information on Hufflepuff’s team.
She sighed again, lamenting the loss of such important opportunities—at least according to Sheila Slater. But it wasn’t as if Addy was useless here at Hogwarts, and she wondered if this was what Grey went through in his own academic career especially in the shadow of Claire. ”Chess Club captain counts for something right?” Addy glanced at Grey with a rare expression in her eyes, almost pleading for the validation she constantly sought from her family. Though Claire had never discouraged her, thankfully, which would have also stung considering how much she looked up to her. Plus, Chess was about patience and strategy, which Addy excelled at—though apparently not enough to gain Prefect over Maxima Greyback. And her mother had some choice words about anything or anyone remotely related or connected to the Greyback name.
The Weekly’s were a difficult family to wrap one’s mind around, and she hoped she explained it enough at a high-level for Grey. ”One is a vampire, and another is part-goblin.” Addy paused and tried to remember if there were any she had forgotten, but that was it. But she nodded in agreement. There were certainly enough for a House team—though there were a few families with lots of children. Penelope was a triplet, and the Vectors had at least five at Hogwarts at the moment. Most of the Weasley’s were gone now. ”He’s the skinny and pale one.” Addy almost said the tall one, but Cheese was the tallest of the group when Dicky used to tower over him. Grey might have seen him before, but he’d also just barely gotten back into school after his accident and recovery.

▲ Despite their disagreements as of late, particularly from the thing he had done earlier in the year, there was still quite a bit that he and Claire were bound to agree on and view similarly. She probably hated that and would dispute it to her grave, but they still thought the same way. Their ambition was created and drilled into them early on, he just happened to reject the part where their parents were involved in his success. She preferred to keep them around. As for the Gryffindor team not having any of the American transfers, that made sense to him. His old house was on the verge of finally ridding itself of the current generation of Weasley offspring (from his understanding), and while he didn’t know which ones were left, they had harbored a pretty strong Quidditch culture. Those that were currently on the team were most likely the ones that still wanted to foster that sort of community on the team, therefore having all the positions filled prior to the Americans coming over. But that was just his view on it. While he never played, he still understood the inner workings and politics of it all. “Chess Club captain absolutely does,” he agreed. Though he was sure their parents were singing her the praises over that, whereas they had never said a damn thing about him being the Chief Editor of the school paper since his fifth year. It was those little details that were ignored when it came to him but glorified for Addy and Claire. Hell, Claire killed a person and they acted like it was the greatest thing that had ever happened. And while it was good for the community as a whole that Desirae Rousseau was dead, being proud of killing someone was messed up. His brain was getting fired up over his envy without good reason, because he honestly didn’t know what his parents thought about Addy’s position as captain of the Chess Club. Intellectually speaking, they probably found it more worthwhile than writing news articles for a living. But what did chess ever get someone? He still got paid for doing his work, and the school newspaper had helped him get that job. The Weekly family got stranger and stranger, adding a half-goblin and a vampire on top of the already mentioned two werewolves. His brain struggled to add all the ones that had been described so far to the supposed eight members that made up the family. That meant there had to be a few that were normal, right? While he mentally counted, Addy added that Dicky was the skinny, pale one. Grey had no idea who that actually was, but nodded his head regardless. “Right right…I think I’ve seen him around a few times,” he lied. His sister’s friend group was massive compared to his one friend. Which was his girlfriend. Who also happened to be in and out constantly. Nothing had changed much between Hogwarts and the Daily Prophet. He was still a slave to the work, except now he got paid. MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

scared of my own ceiling scared i'll die of uncertainty Addy had always watched things from an early age. Watched as Claire obediently carried out their parents’ wishes while Grey resisted and noted the results of both actions. At times, it was like a fork in the road, two very different people and yet both very much Slaters. And now and then, there was a common opinion. Much to her surprise, Claire had advised her to try different options suggesting that since Claire had fulfilled the important part of earning her career as an Auror, there was little use for a second. It was the recognition Addy didn’t know she’d been looking for from someone she looked up to, and while Addy still felt wary, it was likely the thing she needed to build up that courage to follow her own path. Ambition was nothing without courage, after all.
Grey also affirmed that her sole ‘title’ at school was worthy of recognition as well. She gave him a small smile. Even the ruthless still knew how to share even the most minor words of encouragement. They weren’t like many siblings she’d seen around school. Penelope with her many siblings or the identical sisters on the house team. Or the Weekly’s, even, of whom they were discussing now. A strange family but a family, nonetheless. Addy paused, trying to recall if Grey had actually ever met Dicky. ”He was away for some time—medical reasons. And then Brigh was away as well. Her father wasn’t well. So it was just me, Raphael, and Penelope.” Addy was sociable enough, though she was much too busy studying, running Chess Club, and practicing Quidditch to sit and talk as much as some of her classmates. Plus, Merlin knew Cheese needed as much help in History of Magic as much as Eggy did in Potions. Though she was conveniently avoiding the former at the moment.
Addy finished her butterbeer. It never seemed to last long. She paused, but only to think and formulate the question she wanted to ask. ”Claire thinks that Mum is satisfied with one Auror in the family.” It had been on her mind the entire Summer, and much like she was taught to listen to authority figures, she respected her siblings’ opinions. ”I think I’ll still apply.” More to say that she did, but Addy hadn’t yet decided.
