Brígh did not like to dwell on that which she could not control. She and Addy were polar opposites in that regard. Perhaps that was what had drawn them together so firmly. Like two sides to the same coin, she could count on Addy to keep her safe in the trouble she caused. She was logical and hardworking, and Brígh sometimes wondered if her best friend was more suited to Hufflepuff. Though she supposed that would make it much easier for her and Cheese to get together. But then, Brígh recalled that Addy would stop at nothing to achieve. It was a trait Brígh had noticed in every member of the Slater family, though she didn't know Grey and Claire very well. She was just glad her mum and dad didn't breathe down her neck as such.
Spilling her secrets was easy for Brígh, especially considering Addy was keenly listening. She mentioned meeting a cute druid whilst she'd been searching for her friend Eli. Though the initial goal of that day hadn't been met, Brígh didn't consider it a loss at all. Aidan was fascinating, and she recalled firmly the electricity that had crackled between them. "A druid," she replied, in a hushed whisper. "I don't know anything about them... and yet there was something different about Aidan. I don't know how to describe it," she added thoughtfully, emptying her glass. "Refill?" asked Brígh, holding it out for Addy to practice.
"Less than five!" Brígh said, equally loud before dissolving into giggles. " No, there were just three. And no, I didn't date any of them. Was a bit hung up... but I wanted to forget. So I needed distractions from what was happening in my life and it was nice to find there were Connors so willing to help me there," she mused. "I wouldn't say I managed them at all well either," she added after a moment. Brígh would be the first to admit that she hadn't been very kind to The Connors. She'd ring them up when she wanted or needed them, used them for what they were worth, and promptly forgot about them until the next time she needed forgetting. A lonely cycle, but a useful one nonetheless.
Rolling her eyes at Addy's initial reluctance to curse breaking, Brígh sighed. "Well, Claire seems to manage just fine as an auror. Besides, we need each other. So you can try it out with me. You hate it, you leave." It was as simple as that for Brígh. Try things, love them or hate them, continue or discontinue as one saw fit. She often saw the world in black and white, good and evil, with no grey area in between. Brígh revealed that she was worried about her date with Albus, if he had found someone that more suited his needs. As in didn't fall off the face of the planet. She sighed, a heavy weight settling on her shoulders. "I don't know. I was so sure about him, but now... well he's always been an enigma, hasn't he?" she murmured, not meeting Addy's eye.

Don't stop, just keep going on I'm your shoulder, lean upon Addy always liked balance. There was a sense of control she craved. She supposed it was just her upbringing and what she had grown accustomed to, but she strived for her goals all the same. One thing she did learn from watching her parents interact with her brother and sister all these years was to be a bit more patient. Addy could take a second to pause before responding or acting. She liked to have a plan, and holding her cards close to her chest was her typical style. Brígh often got frustrated with her when she felt there was a time to act on something immediately, and Addy would hold out. Just two different styles but one not necessarily better than the other. There was a lot Addy could learn from Brígh. Not everything needed a plan, and flexibility was important. The thought crossed Addy's mind about how to handle this situation with Cheese. It wasn't like anything she'd ever encountered before, and maybe her approach wasn't useful here.
But she was hardly sober enough to think of such things. Even in this situation now, hanging out with friends and drinking (despite legally) was not something her parents would smile about. But, as far as they knew, she had high-achieving friends who had similar NEWT level classes as she did, and that was important. Addy listened about the druid that Brígh had befriended, she didn't have any druid friends herself, but Brígh was typically a quick judge of character, so her positive notes about him told ADdy not to doubt--still, she would have to meet him herself. "When can I meet him?" While still looking around, Addy held out her empty glass for Brígh to refill, though she almost spilled whiskey when she found her wand and moved her glass almost a bit too far from the stream. "Found it!" And she made sure to keep it nearby so it wouldn't get lost again. "Sorry..." She slurred an apology. The intoxication made it hard to focus, which she didn't particularly like, especially when she kept thinking about irrelevant topics.
"Three?" Addy repeated in a sharp whisper. And suddenly, she realized that Brígh knew more about a topic than she did. Being drunk, she almost felt competitive, but then, of course, the only face that popped in her head was that of the boy passed out on the couch. "Do you have a Connor you can spare for your dearest and oldest friend?" She joked, drinking more whiskey. But after what Cheese had said in the hot tub and her own confusion about everything--she wouldn't have minded a distraction that wasn't a book or to forget altogether. Addy still gave a friend a look. Naturally, she was biased, but Brígh was an excellent person, and no wonder the harem had formed.
The idea of Curse Breaking was still one that unsettled her, and her expression showed how she felt about it. "I dunno B..." Addy's face drooped a bit. Her first thought was what her parents might have thought. What kind of reputation could she reasonably earn in that field. What kind of glory was there she couldn't earn as an Auror? She paused and stared off to a random corner of the bed, absent-mindedly drinking her whiskey. "My parents haven't asked me about my career choices as much as they used to Claire and Grey...I was thinking of working with the new magical tech stuff." Addy admitted, it had been an idea in her mind all year, and since it had become more prominent. Claire mentioned the changes at the Ministry, and that had Addy's hopes up. There was also the idea of all being separated as soon as they graduated. Brígh off Curse Breaking, Addy possibly at the Ministry, Cheese and Eggy doing whatever they were going to do, and Dicky still in school. She didn't want the sad thoughts about it.
Addy watched as Brígh's demeanor changed when Albus was brought up. Even her physical self changed. "What do you mean?" Was Brígh moving on, or had she given up? She hated seeing her friend so down about a boy and one that, in Addy's mind, was clearly an idiot. "Brígh, listen to me." Addy did her best to use her sternest tone that they were all used to. "If he can't see the wonderful person right in front of him--then he's a total idiot." Addy looked at Brígh with a warm expression, but she was serious. "You are one of the best people I know." Addy reminded her friend, a drunken but true declaration.

Brígh worked almost exclusively off immediate reactions. She had always been quick to judge, and quick to forgive. Even in the case of Addy - they had been from houses with a history of opposition, yet their friendship was unshakable. Tonight's revelations only proved that further. Brígh was proud of her ability to quickly assess the good from the bad, giving her time to those worthwhile. She would never admit that she sometimes made mistakes with first impressions.
Regardless, Brígh went on about Aidan, the Connors and other mindless details. "We can visit during the Hogsmeade weekend!" said Brígh brightly, sober enough just to make a mental note of it. "Well... we will visit. Gotta see Eli, or he might murder me," she added after a moment, taking a swig of her drink and draining the glass once more. She let out a shout of laughter as Addy asked her to spare a Connor, nearly spilling her freshly refilled beverage. "No! You've got Cheese you nitwit!" she exclaimed, nudging Addy playfully. "Figure that out first. And if it doesn't work, you can have a Connor," said Brígh with a nod. She didn't know what would come of Addy and Cheese's newfound relationship (or lack thereof) and didn't have the brain capacity to deal with it now.
Brígh fixed Addy with a look as her friend admitted she'd been interested in following a technical career. "Well, of course you can do that. Maybe on the side? Or like... I dunno, I just really want you and Cheese to be by my side," said Brígh, ever the steamroller. "Besides, it could all go tits up and we end up begging for sickles in Diagon Alley. But... you know I just want you to be happy. You know that, right Addy? Right?" said Brígh, not making much sense. There was a thread of a thought lacing through her head. She wanted Addy to be happy. Happier, unlike her.
Her shoulders slumped slightly at the mention of Albus. It was somewhat painful to imagine what could have been. She felt completely at fault for messing everything up, even if perhaps it wasn't her fault at all. Perhaps it wasn't meant to be as she had once thought. Brígh didn't meet Addy's fierce gaze as she exclaimed that Brígh was one of the best people she knew. "Why can't it just be easy?" she murmured, glancing up at last, her eyes slightly unfocused.

Don't stop, just keep going on I'm your shoulder, lean upon When Addy had first met Brígh in first year, she’d immediately noticed her energy. It was hard to miss. She could be loud sometimes while Addy was focused on making the best impressions to her professors for the sake of her reputation, and also, she was sure they would know her as Claire and Grey’s younger sister. It was some kind of luck that they‘d been forced to work together, and Addy saw her good nature, and they’d just gotten along, otherwise who knows what their story might have been as longtime friends. She nodded happily (and rather drunkenly) at Brígh’s suggestion about the next Hogsmeade weekend. She’d never been opposed to meeting new people, though Addy typically held on to first impressions rather stubbornly, and she wanted to see what had intrigued her friend so much. It was also an excuse to not be with Cheese alone if she had to for the sake of her own sanity.
Addy blushed when she mentioned the boy that was now passed out on the couch. There was no control of her reaction with how much she’d had to drink. She wasn’t even worried about how to hide the hangover if it were to persist longer than a day and she was at home. Then again, her parents were likely to leave her be unless they had urgent questions about her future. ”Brígh…that’s not gonna happen. Just set me up with a successful Connor.” She drank more whiskey to avoid the subject that currently was making her face hot and her heart race a bit. Though she was also starting to feel the day's exhaustion, she struggled as her eyes wanted to close.
She chuckled. The mental image of the three of them begging for money in Diagon Alley was ridiculous. But Curse Breaking? It didn’t inspire the joy she’d hoped for when thinking of a career. Perhaps nothing quite did, especially when all she could see was the disapproving look in her mother’s eye or knowing precisely what snide comment she would return with. ”I know B…I wish I knew how.” It was very rare that Addy talked about such things, her need for order and direction and a plan. It was how she had been raised, expectations had been set, and her goal was merely to meet them. It was simple enough in theory, but the execution was an entirely different matter. Her friends knew how the Slater family was, and while Addy had an easier time with her parents in comparison to her siblings, it was still a challenge to navigate at times. ”Besides, adventure is entirely up your alley—hardly mine.” She responded, which was just the difference between their personalities.
Brígh looked at Addy, and even inebriated, she could see the sadness in her eyes. If there was one way to anger the usually calm and collected girl, it was to insult the ones she loved. And this rejection she considered a great insult of a great person. But the question resonated with her as well, and she sighed, looking away and finishing the contents of her glass. ”The things that are worth it never come easy.” She spoke, fiddling with the empty glass now, but she looked back at Brígh. ”If he didn’t want to work for it, then he wasn’t worth your time.” She had grown accustomed to the girl talk in the girls' dorms and hearing all the stories about their various relationships and everything. It was easy to see the problems and solutions from an outside perspective, but not so much when you were in a situation and logic clouded by emotion. Maybe that’s what whiskey was for, after all. Typically Addy had more a filter when it came to these topics but a bottle of whiskey quickly rid her of that.

Brígh made a comment about Addy having Cheese, and if all else failed, at least there were Connors. She took a deep drink of her whisky, and sputtered as Addy uttered a further denial that things wouldn't work out with Cheese. The alcohol had saturated her mind too much to bring Brígh to answer, shrugging off Addy's resistance instead. "I just want you to be happy," Brígh mumbled once again to Addy, flinging a freckled arm around her friend's neck in a hug that ended up being more of a chokehold than anything. "But Ads, you're also up my alley," she mumbled, barely coherent.
So often, Brígh was the glue that held the Alphabet Gang together. Her bright effervescence, her easy laughter and demeanour was hard to deny. But as she thought of how difficult her romantic life had become, she felt dampened. The weight on her shoulders was obvious even to the blind drunk Addy, even as she turned away and finished off the glass. Brígh stared down at her own empty glass, wondering dully if perhaps the answers to her problems did not in fact lie there. "But I might love him." said Brígh in a very tiny voice. "I don't even know what it means to love someone," she added after a moment, her dark eyes meeting Addy's.
A clock chimed somewhere within the house, and Brígh started, having completely forgotten how close to the new year they'd been. "Midnight. Best go get in my pumpkin carriage," said Brígh wryly. "Happy new year, Addy. A kiss, to start it off right!" she added, finding some of her usual fire within her as she bent forward and kissed Addy smack on the mouth. She grinned wolfishly. "One last drink before we pass out?"

Don't stop, just keep going on I'm your shoulder, lean upon Addy drank more whiskey, though almost spit it out when she felt a weight arm around her shoulders and then to her neck. ”I am happy.” She insisted. What wasn’t there to be happy about? She had excellent grades and a bright future, even if certain goals hadn’t been met and were impossible now. She wasn’t a Prefect, Quidditch captain, or Head Girl…well, she told herself she was happy or should be. Their mumbling was hardly comprehensible at this point, and Addy found herself too far into her thoughts to notice. Talking about the future and love, two very different topics that were handled very differently. And Addy knew which one she preferred to focus on.
Before she could answer or give an opinion, they both paused at the chiming of a clock. Midnight. They were now in the new year, and it excited and made Addy nervous all at the same time. But before she could process that, Brígh was very much in her personal space, landing a kiss on Addy’s mouth though almost knocking her off the bed with her momentum. ”Merlin Brígh, a warning first next time.” She mumbled, stabilizing herself back on the bed. Addy had long ago grown used to Brígh’s enthusiastic and various displays of affection toward all of them. She nodded at the request for a final drink, and grabbing her wand, she focused as best through her rapidly blurring vision on their glasses to refill them. ”To a New Year.” She lifted her glass in a toast before drinking.
