winter, 2021 THE WINTER OF 2021, ONDINA HAD DEVELOPED a new allergy and a terrible chest infection. She'd had to return home to her parents house before term had broken off for Christmas and for fear of causing another reaction, Ondina hadn't been permitted to take any additional potions to clear the fluid from her lungs. Instead, she was confined to her bedroom where she hacked up her lungs in relative peace. It was a horrible, sickening affair and Ondina had despised every moment of it. Hoping pathetically that none of her new friends discovered she was bed bound. Her body frail and pale, a potion bottle misting the room with humid air to stop Ondina from wheezing too terribly. She'd ruined Christmas, yet again. Laying face down on a pillow, her face turned towards the old, clunky muggle television that provided her with the only source of entertainment since she'd returned home. Her siblings had come home soon after, but few were forbidden from sitting with her, lest they allow in any nasty microbes or dust particles to irritate her awful, weakling lungs. The video noisily slid in to place in the slot under the old machine, and the screen flickered to life. It was a routine Ondina had come to complete mechanically, watching her way through a mighty stack of old video tapes, muggle animated movies and classics. Downstairs, she heard the front door open and her mother call out a shrill goodbye to her. She'd been upstairs only ten minutes prior, to check on Ondina's temperature and help her take the only potion the healers had allowed her to consume, until they felt sure enough to try another. All it did was ease the pain, the tightness in her chest remained. Once the tell-tale crack of apparartion shook their old house, Ondina turned her face to the door forlornly. Her mother wouldn't dare leave her alone, but it didn't matter if they were stuck downstairs. Instructed only to keep an ear out for Ondina, should she fall in to a fatal coughing fit. Rolling on to her knees, Ondina crawled across her wooden floor, knees aching, until she reached her bedroom door. She slid her bum beside it and cracked it open daringly to stare in to the dimly lit hallway, the afternoon dull and grey. "Har-harp-er." Ondina whispered hoarsely, her bony knuckles knocking against the doorway jaggedly to try and get her sisters attention downstairs. When she received no immediate answer, Ondina curled her chest in to herself and forced a cough in to the doors opening. And then another, and another, until she brought on a ravaging fit of nasty, phlegm-y hacks. She hated to feel ignored.

▲ “Keep those things out of your ears so that you can hear your sister if she needs help.” Her mother had hissed at her about the earbuds that Harper currently had shoved into her head. Interactions with her parents weren’t typically like that, but the waxing strain of Ondina’s illness over the last few weeks was starting to get to the whole family. She had admittedly not been on her best behavior this Christmas break, having come home from school with a real attitude about being required to keep her sister company in the Hospital Wing for the few days before their parents could arrive and bring her home. Ondina had been fairly quiet during that time, coughing fits aside, but Harper still didn’t understand why she was being forced to sit and sleep there with her. That was what the school nurse was for. And now that her sister had been through all sorts of tests after getting home, they weren’t even allowed to be in the same room as each other anymore. The entire situation in at school seemed pointless now, and she could only feel like it was to keep her sister from whining about being left on her own whilst sick. A few years prior, and Harper would have done anything for Ondina without thinking twice. That was all different now, and she was getting tired of everything that accompanied the younger Weasley. But Harper did as she was told, and turned her music off and kept the earbuds out of her ears as her mum left, the crack of her disapparating signifying that it was just her and her siblings left in the house. She had no idea where Luke had gone though, so that left everything up to her if something happened with Ondina. Which was perfect. There had been instances prior to this illness where she had been forced to step in and help with her sister’s poor disposition, and she was sure this wouldn’t be the last either. There was always something going on, and she dreaded having to go home during breaks now. Even if Ondina hadn’t gotten ill prior to break, there was still no way that their parents would have allowed Harper to stay at school for it. She was the built in baby-sitter now, for some reason, even though she wasn’t even a year older. Had she decided to disobey her mother, who really did mean well despite being completely out of character lately, she probably wouldn’t have heard the cracked whisper of her name floating down from the second floor. She didn’t even know if it was a voice at first, but the subsequent coughing told her that her ears hadn’t been tricking her. Quickly sliding off of the couch, she pounded up the stairs as quickly as she could, and stopped at Ondina’s door, which was still closed. She could hear the horrid coughs from the other side. “Ondina?” she asked, pressing her head up against the door so that she could hear her sister better if she could talk. She really didn’t want to have to go in - the last time she had, the airflow felt stale with sickness. Even if she couldn’t catch what her sister had, it still felt gross. “Do you need me to get you something?” MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

winter, 2021 THE HACKING COUGHS DID NOT ABATE UNTIL Ondina heard Harper's dragging footsteps. Wet and angry coughs punctuating her gait, they burned deep in her chest, eyes watering until tears streamed down both of her inflamed cheeks. She wedged her puffy, crying face out of the cracked doorway and stared balefully up at her sister. Her face warm and full of healthy colour, her hair shiny waves of burnt cooper. Ondina hated her.
"I'm- b-bored." She wheezed, hair dark and wet where it had stuck sweaty to her head. "Mums not here..." She added obviously, wiping a clumsy hand over her bloodless lips. Slumped on the cold floorboards, she felt the chill quake in her bones, but she was too proud to show it. If she displayed her discomfort Harper would certainly not fold.
"Come in-" Stopping abruptly, Ondina drew in a short breath, the sound rattling noisily in her chest. "Please- I'm- 'm going maaad." The word 'mad' lengthening to a keening whine of despair. "It's awful in here." She cried, shoulders slumping as she pushed the door open more, displaying her crumpled figure where it lay curled by the door like a sick little kneazle.

▲ The door was barely cracked open, and had it not been for the sound of her sister’s raspy whisper from the direction of the floor, Harper was sure to have not noticed it at all. The puffed up and red eyes that stared up at her were directly out of the horror movie she had watched on her own a few nights before at two in the morning, and almost caused her to jump back in fright. Even the voice, to a degree, sounded similar, and she was starting to wonder if Ondina was moonlighting as a muggle actress. Her personality over the last few years was certainly leading up to a career like that, her constant mask changing in front of the right parties was aggravating to experience in person. There was no way that their parents were completely oblivious to her true nature. They had enough cousins and knew enough people that rumors of Ondina lashing out at school had to come out eventually. If not, Harper had no problem spilling the beans, even if it meant constant torture at school and ire from her parents until they saw the truth. But Ondina in her curled up mass on the floor of her bedroom was hard to ignore, even if she was a vile creature that only oozed snot and phlegm as of late. She was pitiful, and Harper liked her more like this than any other state. At least she had an excuse to be annoying, because she was actually sick. Standing over her felt good, the power dynamic flipping instantly, but only for a moment. The only problem now was that she had answered Ondina’s call. If she was a jerk or acted out, that would directly reflect back on her and their mum would be actually pissed. The realization struck a chord of fear in her as she stared down at her sister, knowing that she was roped in whether she wanted to be or not. Harper agreed that it was awful in the bedroom: it was exactly how she anticipated it as the door opened more. Felt like sickness, the air heavy and sanitized, though that was weakening with every cough that violently came out of Ondina. “Can’t you just put another movie on and fall asleep? That’s seemed to work so far,” Harper said, trying to keep her tone even so it didn’t sound like she was pleading. Ultimately she had the ability to walk away. Ondina wasn’t in any condition to force her into the bedroom, aside from bringing herself into a coughing fit. Even though she had been hacking, it didn’t seem like she was on the verge of an attack, which was good for Harper’s prospects when it came to escaping. “And anyways, I played with a dog outside Uncle George’s shop the other day. I might have hair on me still,” she added, hoping the tacked on lie would help even more. MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

winter, 2021 HARPER WAS STOCK STILL IN THE FRAME OF THE doorway. Unmoved by Ondina's pitiful appearance as she whined in to her bony knees. She'd have wailed, if it hadn't been for the tightness in her lungs. Leaving her with just the wheezing keen that sounded more like a squeaky hinge than human despair. "I already did..." Ondina whispered, voice barely audible as she lifted her head and braced her crumpled chin on one knee. "I don't- I'm sick of watching on my own." Her bottom lip pouted, eyes too large in her pale, sickly face.
She looked like a newborn fawn; all sticky, slicked back hair and wobbling, too long limbs. Eventually, Ondina reached out to her sister. Movement too quick for her otherwise limp frame, but she managed. Her long fingers wrapping desperately around the exposed skin at Harper's ankle. "I don't- I don't care." She declared, a stubborn stiffness in her squared jaw as she weakly tugged on her sisters leg. "Just come... just until I fall asleep- I promise it won't take long." She was so lonely, so desperately sick, that her pride did not care that Harper did not wish to stay with her. Usually, she would revolt against the rejection, but she was weak enough that it didn't seem to matter. "Please?" She just wanted somebody beside her, lest she roll over and die in her sleep without anyone there to witness it.

▲ The war going on in her head about what she should do in this situation was horrid. On one hand, it wasn’t like Ondina had the sort of illness that could be spread to her from close contact. The holdout here was that Harper simply disliked spending time with her younger sister because she was an abhorrent little gremlin. Everyone but their parents knew that and would definitely not step all the way into the bedroom knowing that. On the other hand, not going in after making contact with the snot demon meant a potential temper tantrum that could aggravate the sickness further and incite the rage of their mum when she got home. Natalie Weasley did not yell often, but Harper was scared of her when she did because it was reserved for only the worst sort of behavior. A crying, dribbling Ondina on the floor of her room screaming about how Harper had left her there after she fell and how she could have died? That would lead to being grounded until she graduated from Hogwarts at least, and there was no amount of good behavior that could fix it. She couldn’t risk that. Ondina didn’t care about the fabricated dog hair story though, clearly sick enough already that it probably didn’t matter if a fiber of hair or two got into her system. That sort of thing was easier to treat then whatever this gooey version of her was. Harper reluctantly pushed the door to the room open and stepped inside, immediately regretting her decision despite knowing it was the smartest thing she could do right now. She would feel dirty from the praise she was going to get from her mum later, because there was nothing that could truly wipe away being nice to someone that hated her as much as Ondina did. That and literally getting the feeling of sanitation off of her. The room reeked of it. “Which one do you want on?” she asked as she fingered the tower of movies that were sat next to the television. So this was where all of her movies had gone to. And that was where they were unfortunately going to stay, because once something belonged to Ondina, it stayed with Ondina. Those weren’t Harper’s rules. If she made the rules, Ondina would have been left out in the woods as an infant the second it became clear that she controlled the entire family dynamic. Hindsight was twenty-twenty though, and they were stuck together because of it. “And I’m only staying until you fall asleep.”MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

winter, 2021 THE DEFEAT ON HARPER'S FACE SHOULD NOT have been as satisfying as it was. Over time, Ondina had come to accept such a reaction as well as affection. It meant winning, after all, didn't it? She was too young, and too self absorbed to consider the shame of pitiful defeat. Hopping onto the balls of her feet, her dry lips split when she grinned and clapped her spindly fingers together as Harper reluctantly entered her room. Ondina retraced her steps slowly, wheezing all the while as she hopped into her bed and situated herself near the wall so that Harper could climb in beside her. It was not a suggestion, but an expectation. "The-" Her entire head bobbed with a painful slowly, hands curled into her lap as her bony chest heaved. "Parent Trap," She still managed to demand, her eyes shrewdly watching her sister manoeuvre the tall tower of video tapes. There was something intoxicating about company, her mood already lifting at the prospect of somebody else doing things for her.
"It's four down, but be careful with the towers." She added, sharp in her instruction. Shifting, Ondina got onto her knees and hobbled across the messy bedding towards the end where her sister stood by the television. She couldn't help herself as she prodded Harper's side and tried to straighten her stiff limbs. "They have ginger hair just like ours, you know." Ondina said as if her sister wouldn't know. Her hand lifted and she tugged on the ends of Harper's hair. "Let me plait it." She was pushing her luck, but it was fairly common for Ondina to do so. "Or else I'll never fall asleep." Leaning forward, Ondina blinked large eyes at Harper's stiff periphery.

▲ She knew she had lost this one, though it wasn’t like she had been set up for a fair battle either. Being told to make sure Ondina didn’t croak during the brief period their mum was out meant all responsibility was on her. In all honestly, her sister kicking the bucket would do them all a solid. Ondina, for one, wouldn’t have to suffer from her ailments anymore, and the rest of them could lead happy, fulfilling lives without fearing every beck and call from her. The problem today was that her sister had heard the instructions loud and clear, knowing that Harper wouldn’t dare break them. Their parents were easy going, except in situations like this. Screwing up here would be similar to dropping the motorcycle on Ondina a few years back. Which again, she should have aimed for a spot that would have been fatal. Whoops. The instructions for the movie were easy enough, and Harper immediately found The Parent Trap in the stack. The tower of movies only wobbled violently when she tried to pick it out from between the ones on top and underneath, causing her to use both hands to stabilize it. Having a finger jabbed into her side and then the ends of her hair tugged absolutely didn’t help the situation. Harper bit down on her lower lip as she fought back the urge to scream at her sister. This wasn’t the time for that, and Ondina was probably doing this as a ruse. The old bait and scream tactic. Which normally brought a parent running. In this case, she’d most likely pass out due to her current condition, and then Harper would be forced to call their mum back. And then guess who would be in trouble? All over The Parent Trap and hair braiding. “Let me put the movie in first,” she said as nicely as possible, but even she could hear the frustration building in her voice. Trying to balance the tower and Ondina’s ‘needs’ was a tightrope walk she’d done plenty of times before, and hated every second of. Releasing the movie from its precarious position, Harper popped it into the player and then took a seat on the floor. Now she just had to wait for the next list of demands, assuming her hair didn’t get messed up from her sister’s grubby, snot streaked hands first. MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

winter, 2021 THOUGH ONDINA LOVED IT WHEN OTHER PEOPLE did things for her, it never went as well as she hoped. It was a terrible shame, she often thought, that she didn't know a spell that made people into puppets. Her whole body freezing in fear as her precious tower of video tapes wobbled under Harper's harsh movements. "Cuh-air-ful!" She hissed, her voice rough from coughing. She had a system, the tapes arranged so that her current favourites were at the top, and the less so situated further down. If they toppled over, it would be all ruined. "You'll ruin it..." She pouted unhappily, only relaxing when the tape was safely removed. Laying down on the duvet, Ondina pillowed her head on her hands with a rattling sigh. "Alright," She muttered, not entirely pleased by the interruption as her fingers slowly disentangled from the ends of Harper's brassy hair. Once the television made that satisfying pop and roll as it ate the tape, Ondina felt some of the tension ease in her chest. Her body relaxing further into her mass of covers and pillows. She lay with her head a the foot of the bed, Harper settling beside it on the floor. Chin on a pillow, Ondina slung her skinny arms over the edge and pulled at Harper's hair until the ends were splayed within reach. As she clumsily plaited the ends of Harper's hair, Ondina sang the beginnings of Love by Nat King Cole as it rumbled from the little television set. "You've got split ends." She commented offhandedly, her voice a whisper, pale face moony in the glow from the TV. "You should fix that," She added, as if it were something terribly unfortunate. Like a great big spot on her chin, very unseemly. As if her nostrils weren't inflamed and her eyes so bloodshot she looked frightening. Ondina tended to avoid her reflection on days like these, she projected instead.
