January 2026
The day dawned more spring-like than Harry could have asked for. Though it was the dead of winter, Harry had managed to convince his eldest son to join him for a rambling walk around Bridgewater Bay. And considering James still lived at home with his mother and father, Harry had considerable sway over his son. Harry's relationship with James had rarely been fraught, the opposite of his relationship with Albus. The thought of his other son made Harry wince - he wasn't entirely sure how to approach Albus with the changes in their life. With the Order becoming unified, Harry wanted to try and convince Albus to join up. But he also didn't want for Albus to be pt in harm's way. Harry ran his hand through his already mussed hair, pushing away those thoughts for another day.
Rapping on James' door, Harry let himself into his room. He wrinkled his nose at the stench. "Blimey, James. Do you ever clean in here?" asked Harry incredulously, his eyes sweeping across the squalor in which his eldest son lived. "We're leaving in twenty. I'll see you downstairs," said Harry, darting out from the doorframe before James could chuck anything at his head.
Harry trounced down the stairs, taking them two at a time. There was a child-like air of excitement about him. He didn't have to hide anymore, and the prospect of getting to feel the clean air with his son by his side was absolutely thrilling for him. Salt the whippet dashed up to Harry as he swung into the sitting room, and Pepper the corgi looked lazily at Harry from his perch on his dog bed. Harry had adopted the pair months ago to atone for his absence, even if Ginny claimed he was completely forgiven. He'd read about puppies in Twelve Fail-Safe Ways to Charm Witches, which Ron had gifted to him years ago. Scratching Salt behind the ears, Harry glanced around the otherwise empty house. It was not long after dawn, and Harry was certain that James wanted to kill him for rousing him so early. Harry straightened, sauntering to the kitchen to prepare sandwiches and snacks for the day outside.

make your mark take your own advice This year had begun on an interesting note. Though there were other distractions in his life, he tried his best to stay focused on the present. It had been a bit of a dream of his after he'd graduated to move out and to go experience the world, but after events concerning his mother and father separately, he'd decided to stick close by. And it wasn't bad. It gave him a chance to spend time with Lily though Albus didn't stick around. Lately, he'd taken a step back. With his father home, he'd realized how pushy he had gotten at times though James didn't think he was necessarily wrong in being so. Harry had talked to James a few days before and asked if he'd wanted to spend some time together. James had been a bit surprised, but he'd agreed nonetheless, but what he didn't expect was a knocking at his door at an hour that was before noon. James enjoyed his days off but was never one to wake up early unless he had a pre-existing appointment of some sort, such as work or plans with Ariadne.
Bleary-eyed, he tried to blink through the blur as he grabbed the nearest pillow and threw it in the general direction of his father's voice. James wasn't sure if he'd hit anything, but whatever was on his desk as he rolled onto his back and groaned. It was too early. He didn't even know what time it was but just that it was early. He lay there for a few minutes as his brain was slow to wake, like one of those computer things at the Ministry when it decided to freeze and not do anything when you clicked the 'on' button. James could readily admit that he was happy his father was home, even if he still couldn't quite let go of the fact that he hadn't told him of his plans. The mix of happiness but betrayal had never sat easily in his chest. Still, he was trying. His father was always sort of someone to aspire to be for James. It had only been a few minutes, but he finally rolled out of bed and grabbed his pants, his wand, and a clean jumper. Glancing at the mirror on his way out of his room, he tried quickly to flatten his hair but promptly gave up. Twenty years and it still had a mind of its own.
Harry was in the kitchen, and James walked in, sleep still evident on his face, but he crouched down to pet the puppies his father had adopted. They were happy to see him, though they were happy to see anyone. James enjoyed their company regardless. Standing up he gave his father an annoyed look. "You couldn't wait until the afternoon?" He asked, waving his wand to prepare some coffee. Normally tea might have sufficed, but it was early.

Deftly closing the door before James could launch any projectiles at him, Harry was well versed in avoidance tactics. He made a brief pit stop in the living room to give the dogs some love before trundling off to the kitchen to slap together some sandwiches. He considered only briefly toasting the baguette before slicing it open and piling it with ham and brie cheese. He produced a sharing packet of crisps form the cupboard (sneakily disguised as a bag of low grade coffee, so no one would steal them) and tucked all their provisions into a rucksack along with water. He considered packing a flagon of pumpkin juice as well. Or whisky. No, this was a wholesome outing.
James' twenty minutes was up, and Harry's dark haired son sauntered into the kitchen, groggy as ever. Harry shrugged as James crouched down to scratch Salt and Pepper's ears, who had followed him into the kitchen. The boys adored James, probably even more so than they loved Harry. Nasty little buggers. Did they have no loyalty? "No. Too many people. Even in January. But it's going to be a balmy day, a whole nine degrees!" Harry proclaimed. "Now, is there anything else we need? Have you put on sun cream? You never know with this global warming business. Might open up a new hole in the e-zone or whatever it's called," said Harry as he dropped a tube of suncream from a drawer into the rucksack, and swung it over his shoulders.
Harry led the way to the front hallway, collecting his own jacket and tossing his son's to him. "We'll apparate to the coast. Take my arm, please James," said Harry with a half smile, holding out his arm in a way that reminded him of all the times he apparated with Dumbledore. I am merely here to guide you, his former mentor had said to him once. "I am merely here to guide you," Harry echoed, more to himself than to James.

make your mark take your own advice James held the mug in his hand as the aroma reached his nostrils, and that seemed to help wake him up on its own. As he took a slow sip, the coffee was still rather hot. His gaze still fell to his father, who happily prepared what James assumed was items for their little adventure today. He honestly wasn’t sure what he had signed up for, but James had told himself he was going to try—Harry seemed to be trying to find a way to still repair things with his family, and why would James want to get in the way of that? James' younger brother might be a different story and a matter to settle on a later date as even James either had a good or bad conversation with him with very little falling in the middle in terms of encounters.
Harry explained that they wanted to avoid a crowd, which made sense, but James’ was just simply never a morning person. Even in his school days, he’d struggled to make his morning classes on time or even early Quidditch practices. Harry seemed excited despite the hour and the water. ’A whole nine degrees!’ He exclaimed, and James physically flinched and then absent-mindedly nodded when he began going off about sun cream and global warming. ”Lovely...” He muttered. The topic was only familiar to James because of Muggle Studies back in school, but otherwise, it hadn’t been on his radar. ”It’s ozone.” He corrected. He remembered that much, and he watched as his father collected a few remaining items and picked up a backpack, and James drank the remaining coffee that had cooled down enough by that point to where he could safely chug it.
Following Harry down the hallway, he had to pause as the puppies kept crowding his feet, and he was trying no to trip over them. But he looked up just in time to catch the jacket that was thrown at him, which he put on. Side-along apparation was not something he did very often, especially when he could manage fine on his own, but he didn’t know exactly where they were going and hence the need this time. But the way he held out his arm and how he spoke gave James a flashback to when he’d been just a boy, and his father would take the kids somewhere far. James approached and placed his hand near his father’s elbow. ”Ready, dad.”

Though he had never explicitly said, Harry felt dreadful for what he had put his family through with his disappearance and presumed death. Looking back on it, he didn't know what he had been thinking, if anything at all. After all, he had trained with some of the most powerful wizards in the world. What were a few witch hunters? In his desperation to not get knotted up in problems and trouble, he had started his own. So Harry had conspired with himself, and though most of his family had easily forgiven his disappearance, he felt he needed to do more. He wanted to do more. He wanted to give his family the adventures and closeness he'd never had with the Dursleys. And this little adventure was just the tip of the ice berg.
Harry delightfully announced it would be a balmy January day, perfect for their little ramble along the coast. He shrugged at James' correction and slung the rucksack over his shoulders. As they passed through the front hallway, Salt scampered up to Harry with leash in mouth. On a whim, Harry picked up the dog and tucked him under his arm. Salt was used to side along apparation, surprisingly. When the Potter boys reached the front garden,. Harry held out his arm. He was brought back to a time when his greatest hero had been alive, guiding him through the murky depths of guesswork and time and space. James took Harry's outstretched arm and the pair turned on the spot, winking out of existence.
The smell of the briny sea met their senses before the world spiralled back into being. Harry placed Salt's leash on and dropped the excitable whippet to the ground. Instantly, he started sniffing around, investigating creatures past. "Hmm, less busy than expected. That's good," said Harry with a nod. He started off towards the path, wending his way and occasionally tugging the leash for Salt to follow closer. "James... do you think I am doing the right thing? With the Order?" asked Harry in an uncharacteristically small voice.

make your mark take your own advice Salt decided to accompany them on this trip, and James reached out and quickly scratched behind his ears out of habit. James had always enjoyed animals, though never to the extent of his Uncle Charlie but enough. They apparated, and James could smell the sea immediately. He let go of his father’s arm and closed his eyes while he took a large breath of the salty air. It was cold enough to make his lungs ache but also woke him up as well. James followed as Harry began to walk, holding Salt’s leash and guiding the excitable creature as he tried to explore his new surroundings. James watched as his tail wagged happily, and he wondered what it would be like to have such a simple life. Being born the first son of Harry Potter meant that James’ life was never destined to be normal. There was always that part of him that knew that and even reveled in the spotlight, or at least until he had been hit with a dose of the real world. Death. It was a funny thing to encounter, though nothing as what his father had seen.
His thoughts were interrupted when he heard his father’s voice. James paused to consider the question. It wasn’t often he was asked an opinion or advice really as James typically would ask Harry instead. James thought about the schism that had occurred and the slight rift it had created in his extended family, but that wasn’t an issue anymore. ”It needed to be done.” He responded. Despite his characteristic goofy smile and silly ways, James was a determined individual who tended to act versus think, though not entirely with complete impulsivity. The split had been a reaction, and James had almost followed his cousin, but his gut had told him not to. But his experience and failures with Phoenix Rising in his last year of school had him pause out of a feeling of self-doubt. Not much had been done since the split except watch more of his loved ones die.
James looked away from his father’s figure and to his surroundings, the slight breeze blowing through his messy hair. Still, it was just one step in the right direction. James supposed there was a lot to be done, and he wondered how much his father would try and keep him out of it. ”What happens next?” He asked, fully intending to be a part of the effort.

It was an unusual occurrence for Harry Potter, the boy who lived, the chosen one, the all knowing defence master, asked for his son's opinion. But James had proven himself time and time again, and it was about time for Harry to trust people other than himself. He couldn't do everything, and even with the Order reformation, it was still an uphill battle to identify and eliminate the Purifiers. James had a leader's blood, passed down from his own father. Harry appraised his son, the tight set of his jaw as James considered his actions with the Order.
A simple response, but adequate. There was a silence between him, though not an uncomfortable one. The pair ambled along the coastal path, Salt leading the way with his keen nose. After a few moments, James spoke again, wondering aloud what happened next. Though Harry had every protective instinct Molly Weasley had instilled in him, he wasn't about to stop his son from participating. He was of age, and had made the decision to do so. He had followed in his own footsteps with the formation of Phoenix Rising while he had still be in school. He knew Lily would want to join up at some point, but was unsure about Albus. Harry would do what he could to ensure his son's longevity, but wasn't going to prevent him from acting.
Sighing deeply, Harry tucked his hands into his pockets. "We start being more proactive. Identify and trace potential Purifiers. They know so much about us, and yet we know nothing about them," said Harry, a heavy weight landing on his shoulders. "Ideally, we'd get a mole in there. But... but I'm worried. I don't want anyone else to die. But with the Purifiers acting as they do, it's sure to happen sooner rather than later," said Harry, thinking of Hermione. Of how the Purifiers had lured her to that site in order to eliminate her. Rashly, Harry had wanted immediate retribution. But he knew he had to think. To think, then act.

make your mark take your own advice James was his father’s son. He knew that now that he was older than just being told that as a boy or teen at Hogwarts. Everything that he knew about right and wrong came from his parents, extended family, and experiences in the world. It was just that straightforward, wasn’t it? He had thought that for many years, but it could never be that simple. As Harry asked James of his opinion regarding the Order—James thought about all that had transpired. While James agreed that unity was the best way forward, all the great minds of Ouroborus and Heliopath on the same side with a combined goal—he didn’t agree with all the decisions. When James had started his activities with Phoenix Rising at seventeen, it had been in response to students being targeted and attacked. He had in mind what his father had done at an even younger age to prepare students against a world that was afraid of them being strong. Unfortunately, the majority won out against that, and James had been upset about it.
But he wouldn’t bring that up now, or at least not yet. Harry, while a senior member of the Order, along with others, was not the leader. James watched the ground in front of him, occasionally glancing at his surroundings and glancing at the coast and the view. It was peaceful, especially with the usual business of his own everyday life. His father let out a deep sigh, and James looked at him as he answered—nodding in agreement. ”A mole seems…risky.” James commented. As much as he was gung-ho about many things with a preference towards action, a mole seemed so dangerous. Who knew what would be waiting for them on the other side? How could they prepare someone for that? The Order had so many known faces and known names, connections to Harry himself numberd greatly due to the extended Weasley family.
Sometimes James wasn’t sure what he could do. While his skills and training as a Hit Wizard put him at a certain level, it didn’t help with information gathering. He supposed other members of the Ministry might be able to help with that. ”Maybe we can get information at work?” He suggested, shaking his head at the same time. ”Do you think they’ll take an interest in the Island? I think Interpol and a handful of the Aurors are working on securing it, or so I’ve heard.”

Harry sighed, tugging on Salt's leash as he tried to scamper after a gull. He had all these great ideas. He always had. It was just a matter of being able to enact them in the right time and place. To not rush things too much, to not let anyone else get hurt. Or to prevent as much pain and death as possible. But one thing Harry had learned was that sacrifice was always required. He ran his fingers through his hair, thinking of all the ways his plans could go wrong. But at the end of the day, they weren't only his plans. He wasn't in charge. The Order wasn't lead by anyone, more flat structured and democratic. Everyone had an equal stake.
"A mole is risky. But we need to know things. If we can just... if we can just get some information. If we can find a way to head off explosions, to know what will happen before it does. Then we don't have to have another incident... another incident like Hermione's," said Harry thickly. He took a moment to compose himself, staring unseeing off into the distance. He missed Hermione, every single day. Even still, he couldn't imagine his life without her, even now as he had to slog through each moment. Harry wiped the traitorous wetness from his eyes as he faced his son.
"James, I am so proud of everything you have done," said Harry. "And you do have good ideas. But I do worry about involving the ministry too much. People talk. And we know there are Purifier spies in there, but not who. So how can we use a reliable network to find out who they are? To gain their confidence?" mused Harry. His face flattened at the mention of the island. "You're not to go near that island. You understand me?" said Harry, a chill creeping down his back. "I don't believe for one minute the Purifiers have anything to do with that evil place. And we need to focus on the Purifier threat for now."

make your mark take your own advice James thought about the times before, when he was younger. Harry showing him how to ride a broom in the yard of his grandparent’s family home, the excitement of his first few years at Hogwarts, and even after the stress of OWLs. Before his mother was attacked and his father targeted, that forced him to react by hiding away from his own family. Harry and his friends had fought for a better world, and yet here they were doing it all over again, it seemed. James shook the thoughts from his mind. It wasn’t like him to brood over such things. He wasn’t his brother, yet Albus had also taken the Law Enforcement route, so he had to see what was happening even if he kept his distance somewhat. Harry seemed to pause and consider what James had said, and in the meantime, James looked up at him as he awaited a response.
When James had joined the Order, despite whatever parental protests there might have been at the time, there had been a structure and even when Ouroborus had been created. Now it was completely different, he wondered how that would work, but he also trusted his comrades to let it work. His only grumbling had been an ongoing discussion about students, or rather James’ younger peers, when he and Abby had formed Phoenix Rising, and there still had yet to be a conclusion on the matter. The thought of Abby always brought a strange sinking feeling in his stomach. A feeling that further grew when he mentioned his late Aunt. They all still felt the void and great loss, and Harry took a moment. ”I miss her too…” He spoke, he had also lost a best friend, but James was aware of how close his Uncle Ron and Aunt Hermione had been to his father.
James looked at Harry, blinking a few times. Pride. How often he had wanted to hear that from him, but the world seemed to always need Harry’s attention. After everything the last few years, he hadn’t realized how much he needed to hear that. ”You’re right. I suppose it’s the same with the Prophet as well?” They had their essential insiders there, but it was still at risk for infiltration as much as the Ministry was. James made a face at the order Harry delivered. ”I can’t say I’m not curious.” He admitted. ”But I can’t very well tell the Head Hitwizard that my father forbade me or even Teddy from going to the island.” His response was sarcastic, and he knew in the very back of his mind that some might think twice about sending Harry Potter’s eldest son into such a place. He supposed he and Albus would be doing reports for the foreseeable future.
James paused a moment to think, watching a seagull fly by before it rejoined its group. ”If the Ministry can’t be trusted, what “reliable network” were you thinking of?” James wasn’t foolish enough to volunteer for such a venture, even so, Harry would rather him visit the island, he figured. Plus, people knew who he was, and it wasn’t much help here.

Harry ran his fingers through his hair, feeling the weight of it all squarely on his shoulders. It was so risky to have a mole, but wasn't it for the greater good after all? Those words made Harry cringe, thinking back to how things had gone so wrong with Dumbledore and Grindlewald. He huffed out a breath, tugging on Salt's leash to get him to calm down. He reminded James that he was so proud of him, and wondered how he had done so well with one son and completely mussed up the other. Harry thought he had gotten through to Albus, but his continued silence and defiance spoke volumes. It seemed Albus wanted nothing to do with Harry. But Harry wasn't one to give up so easily. For now, he would focus on the Purifier threat.
With a nod, Harry replied. "Yeah, we've got Cade bringing us the news before it breaks. Handy that he controls the streams," mused Harry. He went on to request - more like order - that none of his family set foot on Yrisle. The risk simply wasn't worth it. Harry levelled a glare at his son. "Then you can find another excuse. Whatever it takes to keep you off that island," said Harry. He had a suspicion that the head Hitwizard wouldn't suggest James or Teddy going to the island at all. And if he did... well, Harry would have words. After all, he still had some sway.
"Some parts can be. But we have to be careful," said Harry slowly. "But I mean to say that there are members of the Order who are very obviously part of the Order, no matter how much we deny it. You and I, for example. We could never infiltrate. But... well, I've made some connections, as you know. Within the well to do pureblood families. And I think the Karkaroffs will be a great asset to us. But James, how do I ask Ana and Cas to potentially risk their lives for this?" asked Harry.

make your mark take your own advice Even standing next to him, James could feel the weight his father carried. Was it worse than before he disappeared or now that he wasn’t officially in charge of the Order? James had felt some of it while he had tried to fill the void left behind for that time, trying to be there for his brother, sister, and mother and try to pick up the pieces that were left behind. It wasn’t what he had thought he would be dealing with at that age, but James hoped that he’d learned something from it, considering what he had sacrificed. James nodded, having the Senior Editor of the Daily Prophet was incredibly helpful for their work, and Cade was a good man as well. ”I suppose it’s a bit different as he’s the Editor.” Hierarchy mattered. The issue with the Ministry was the multiple branches and not knowing where they all stood.
James rolled his eyes. It was doubtful he would be sent to the island, especially when one of their own was his boss’ boss now. But he wasn’t going to argue further on the topic. ”I don’t think Bianca would risk sending Albus and me there, dad.” He mumbled. It was times such as that where his name only tripped him up, they had chosen dangerous careers and wanted to do good in the world, but some people weren’t willing to risk them despite their intent and knowing what they had signed up for. James knew the risk he signed up for and was taking every day he went into work, Adriadne told him stories of some of the patients she passed by in the hospital, and he was thankful she worked in a part of the hospital that typically had less sad stories.
They were in agreement on how being part of a specific family could hinder them in certain activities. Being a Potter wasn’t any good for infiltration as his father suggested but suitable for recruitment if anything—even distraction. He began to explain connections to Pureblood families and then brought up Casimir and his sister Anastasia, and James looked up in a bit of surprise, though the logic made sense—he didn’t know why he reacted like that. He found that his walking had slowed down a bit as he looked up at his father. ”You want them to be the moles?” James didn’t know Ana well, but he’d interacted with Cas on a few occasions and not as much as some of the other members. He had interacted with Ana very rarely at work but saw how some got out of her way when she walked down a hallway, and her reputation in Interpol was solid, as was her reputation as a duelist. But how do you ask one to put yourself in such a dangerous position? It wasn’t something James ever wished to ask of anyone and carry the burden that came along with it.
James thought for a moment. ”I know Cas trusts you, but Ana joined after the split after you…well, I’ve only seen her stick by Cas’ side.” In all the meetings and arguments he had attended and witnessed. James knew she was friends with a select few and even made small talk with Teddy but typically had an expression on her face that said she was about to hex him the next time he picked a silly argument with her brother. That had been the most challenging part of the split, the disagreements and inability to agree on anything and push forward. It had frustrated James to no end. "What about Jasper?" If the Pureblood route was in consideration that also included Jasper as a Yaxley, though he was a much newer member and James didn't know him well.

Harry mulled over James' considerations, especially that Ana had no distinct loyalty to him or the Order, only to her brother. "But you see James... that's exactly what makes her perfect. When under questioning or anything, nothing ties her to the Order. And I know Cas won't waver from Order loyalty, so Ana will remain closely tied with her brother. Don't you see how it works?" said Harry earnestly. James suggested Jasper instead of Ana. Harry had briefly considered that appointment. "I don't think it would work as well. Jasper has the school to work at. Someone from the ministry would have more flexibility," said Harry.
Exhaling sharply, Harry glanced thoughtfully over the cliffs edge. He contemplated the very depth of these plots that they had to quietly put into action. With a sign, Harry continued. "You and I both know I don't want to put any more lives at risk. But Elaine and her purifiers have to be stopped. We can't have another Hermione," said Harry, his voice cracking on his late friend's name. "What else can we do to stop them? How can we get ahead?"

make your mark take your own advice James tried to follow his father’s thought process. Using the Karkaroffs in such a plan was the smart thing to do, but asking someone to take that level of risk… sat uncomfortably with James. But, as his father’s son he knew that it likely sat even heavier on his father’s shoulders. While James had rarely interacted with Ana on Ouroboros business, he had seen her at meetings regularly but typically ready for a fight to break out. At the Ministry, it was known that she was an adept duelist, and not even James’ inflated self-confidence (at times) would challenge that. ”Kind of.” The problem was visibility in James’ mind. ”Well…think of it like this, dad. If you weren’t telling me this, and I saw her doing something suspicious at work or in Diagon Alley or wherever…well, what am I supposed to think?” James looked at Harry after he spoke. Though his point on Jasper was noted, it would be more challenging to do such a task as a Professor.
Harry invoking his late aunt’s name brought a wave of sadness over him. James missed her greatly, though probably never as much as his father would. James missed her advice and knowledge, but also her wit. But he also missed the dynamic. There was a void now in his extended family that was apparent all the time. It also hadn’t helped that his father hadn’t been back that long before her death, as if one void was fixed while this new one was now permanent. ”I suppose your right…if anything happened to any more of us or you actually disappear this time—“ James paused. He didn’t want to let his mind wander down that route again. Clearing his throat, he glanced at the coast while he gathered himself, feeling the breeze ruffle his hair, before looking back at Harry. ”Do you think she’ll do it?”

Harry mulled over his son's point. It was a fair one, of course. "I'd assume she'd defected. But the difference between the Order and the Purifiers is that we don't aim to kill," said Harry simply. "It would be crucial for her to act in ways that wouldn't be easily found out. Much more underground. Nobody knows who the Purifiers really are, and we need someone who could blend in to find that out for us. If there was another option, I'd take it but... we don't really have a choice, do we James?" said Harry, exhaling sharply. After a long while of silence, Harry replied to his son. "I think she will," said Harry.
Salt let out a low growl, drawing Harry's attention. A group of other dogs were approaching them, their leashes held loosely by a group of young, chattering women. Harry glanced between their faces, frowning. Salt didn't usually behave this poorly, though he often got overexcited. "Come on," said Harry, taking one last look at the women before turning the opposite direction from them and directing both his son and the dog away from them. "That was odd," said Harry in a low voice, speaking to no one in particular. "How is Ariadne, anyways?" asked Harry suddenly, catching his son's gaze.
