Gabrielle had had a very long night. She liked the nocturnal schedule, to be honest. But it didn't really work out when she was checking out a few flats. So, begrudgingly, she got out of bed early. She was currently staying a few nights at the Leaky Cauldron, just until she sign a lease for a flat. At least it came with breakfast. That was a nice plus. So, she showered, got dressed, and, covering a yawn, headed down stairs to the main pub of the inn. She quietly ordered breakfast and went to a booth to get settled.
As she waited for her food, she pulled out her phone, and a leather bound journal. Flipping it open she started to skim her notes. All the leads she currently had for the bounty's she'd picked up the night before. After her skim, she unlocked her phone and started to google search. While some people might not consider "google" part of bounty hunting, it could prove very useful. She would search local, and international news for any new leads.
She scrolled for several minutes. Nothing was really catching her attention though. Thankfully, it was around that moment that her breakfast was finally brought to her table. She set the phone and book aside, and was just about to dig in when someone very familiar walked into the pub. "... James?"

monsters stuck in your head monsters under your bed January 13, 2026 @gabrielle Work was busy. They’d been summoned late the previous evening to assist in a join Interpol and Auror’s department case. The last thing the Auror’s office needed was another building collapsing while a fugitive attempted to flee, and though it was unfortunate, it was not one of the Azkaban inmates. He was still someone dangerous. Despite the late hour, he still had to be at work later that day, and if he was being honest, he hadn’t been able to sleep with the adrenaline still coursing through him. He decided coffee might do the trick, though it was a bit early for anything stronger. The thought had crossed his mind. Walking into the pub, he smiled easily to the bartender who recognized him. It wasn’t that it was common to find James in a pub, but due to work, he would pop in for a meal at odd hours or a drink with Teddy when they were off their shift at the same time.
However, instead of walking toward the bar, he paused as he heard his name called out. James was a common name, and they were in England after all, but it wasn’t what caused him to pause. It was the voice that had said it. Turning his head, his hazel eyes stared at the face of a friend he thought long lost, and he blinked a few times to make sure she was actually sitting there. ”Gabby?” They had been at school together, and James close to her sister Abby as well as Gabby, but after Abby was killed, she had disappeared. James knew she was alive, there had been an occasional letter—or a short note, rather, but James had been so consumed by the chaos in his own family he hadn’t gone to look for her. But now, here she was.
Walking toward the table, his face was still in a bit of disbelief. Gabby did look a bit different though it was more her demeanor than anything. ”You’re back?” He said, stating the obvious before coming back to his full senses. ”Where have you been? It's been over a year and a half.” His tone came out a bit more urgent than he wanted. But it was more out of concern than anything. All that time as friends and all the things they had seen at school and afterward, but while James had lost one of his closest friends the day Abby died, the girl in front of him had lost her twin—her sister.

Gabrielle almost cringed at the nickname. The nickname so similar to Abby's. But yet it was almost nice to hear it from an old friend. Because it was a reminder of better times. Happier times. Gabrielle offered a small smile to him. "Hey," she offered, though it clearly was a poor greeting after so long. She didn't get up, as he'd crossed to the table himself. He looked stunned, but it was nice to see a familiar face. Hurt, plenty, but was nice.
"Yeah," she answered, though as he asked where she'd been it made her pause. Now that was a story and a half on it's own... She glanced down at the table, unsure how to even start that conversation before looking back up at James. "Traveling. Spent a bit of time in Australia," she offered though it was an understatement. She'd literally dropped everything and disappeared for a long time. "Just needed to get away from everything, you know? After what happened..." IT was a slightly better answer. After losing her father, and then her twin. Half her family. The fall of the Order of the Phoenix had just been the final nail in the coffin. "You look good. How have you been?"

monsters stuck in your head monsters under your bed January 13, 2026 @gabrielle James was sure she wasn’t expecting to see him today, though seeing her and confirming she was alive was good. Even if it did feel a bit weird. Looking at her reminded him of Abby, his late best friend—though he and Abby had grown close as well during school and their Hit Wizard training. When she had decided to leave and not tell anyone, dropping from training and not even letting her brother and mother or her friends know where she had gone—well, James had felt he’d lost another friend to the reality of the world. Not to mention the timing had been more or less around when his father had disappeared. Ever since he was sixteen, James had found himself realizing reality, his life wasn’t the comfortable bubble he was raised in, and it had prompted him to create Phoenix Rising and join the Order as soon as he could.
She didn’t answer him right away, and he approached the table. ”Um—mind if I sit?” He asked. It all felt a bit awkward rather than two old friends running into one another. But he supposed it was what could be expected in these circumstances. She explained that she had been traveling. Her notes she would occasionally send didn’t specify a source though he wasn’t sure if she was telling him the whole story. James nodded. She didn’t need to explain that part—he couldn’t imagine feeling the pain he had when his father’s wand had been found by his uncle and losing either Lily or Albus in such a time. ”Yea…” His mind wandered to those darker times, but he was brought back with her question.
James gave her a look. He probably looked like crap considering he’d slept all of a few hours after a few long days. ”I’ll take the compliment, considering I haven’t slept.” His tone was a bit playful, but weary—still his usual grin came through. There wasn’t much to say, surely she’d been up to date on the news. ”I finished my training last year, and Dad was gone for a while.” He paused. He supposed he hadn’t quite thought of all the events he had seen in the past year and a half, all at the same time in a while. James thought about his Aunt and the Quidditch Final, he missed her more than he would admit out loud. Thinking about it made him uncharacteristically quiet. He had thought he'd lost is father, and she'd disappeared as well. And then his Aunt was killed a long with many people that day. He supposed it would have been nice to have an old friend to talk to. ”He brought the Order back.”

While Gabrielle and Abigail hadn't been identical twins, they'd shared enough similarities to be clearly identifiable as sisters. They'd shared the bond that many twins shared, a closeness that few would ever understand. Each other's best oldest and dearest friends, able to understand each other on a level that no one else ever would. They'd even shared many of the same friends, though James had been much closer to Abby then Gabrielle. They'd just run in the same circles, so the void Abby's death made had affected Gabrielle's life in every aspect. They'd both even gone into law enforcement, so even their work lives after graduation had been entwined. Though... Sometimes she forgot that she wasn't the only person that lost Abigail. James had lost her too. And next to her direct family, he'd have been the most affected by Abby's death.
He asked if he could sit and she blinked. "Oh, not at all. Please." She motioned to the open seat across from her. It was a bit odd, the formality of the question. But it only seemed to say how distant they'd grown since Abby's death. But that tended to happen when people died. It made things awkward and distant. Especially when one of the parties ran away from it instead of dealing with it.
Gabrielle finally flashed a small smile as he mentioned he hadn't slept. He did look a bit tired, she had to admit. But she probably didn't look totally wide awake either. She was very nocturnal at the moment. THough that habit had started in Hitwitch training, she supposed. Crime never slept, so you never knew when you'd get called in. It was strange to think. If she'd stayed, they both would have finished their training together. "Bet they're keeping you pretty busy with everything that's happened." she answered. She'd kept up with the news of her home. Her mother in particular had always written long winded letters to keep her informed. Though she'd been smiling still, that smile vanished and a more serious expression replaced it. She'd heard a rumor about Harry being back.... "You mean he faked his own death, then decided to come back when it was convenient." Because, really, what else had it been? Everyone had thought Harry Potter was gone and dead. But the rumors seemed to hint that he was "fine" and healthy. There was a bit of a bite to her words. WHile she'd disappeared she'd never pretended to be dead.
THen, the bomb shell. The Order was back. Gabrielle had left after the split. Gabrielle had some very... difficult feelings about the Order of the Phoenix. Angry, bitter feelings. The Order was there to protect people. But they'd failed her father and sister. Just like everyone else. When she'd left England, she'd left the Order behind as well. "Well, that's ironic." She answered. It seemed the Order really must be a fragile thing, if it's entire existence hinged on Harry Potter's participation.

monsters stuck in your head monsters under your bed January 13, 2026 @gabrielle James could never imagine what it would be like to lose a sibling, to wake up tomorrow morning and realize he’d never see or speak to Albus or Lily ever again. The thought was unsettling, but he knew it was the reality for many, including Gabby and even his father losing his Aunt Hermione. She didn’t tell him to leave, and he sat down so they could continue talking. The current awkwardness and distance was a far cry from their previous relationship as friends. It unsettled him as well. James was always easily sociable. He shrugged. It was true. The long days, random hours, and continuous shifts without a day off and enough time to sleep kept him away from visiting his family as often as well as his girlfriend and friends. The urgency of the Purifier threat was becoming more apparent as the Order pieced together a clearer picture of things with Claire, Cas, and the other’s help.
”They’ve sent some of the team to the island to assist the Aurors and Interpol. Doesn’t seem like I’ll end up going.” He responded, while he had been curious of the place that the papers kept reporting on—though, with the vaguest of details, from what James had seen, he was glad he wasn’t going. It only took away his days off to cover those who were out. James found himself sitting up a little straighter, and his face composing himself into a slightly more serious expression. While Gabby wasn’t wrong, hearing it put that way did strike a bit of a nerve—if only because James hadn’t one hundred percent moved on from the issue himself despite all this time. James gave her a knowing look. While his father had wanted a quieter life now, it wasn’t as if it was supposed to be a secret. He was alive and well. If people knew, then they knew. But James was grateful that his father was alive despite everything. He’d lost too many people, but he knew Gabby had as well—he wasn’t going to dig into that topic today.
”Ironic?” He asked. James remembered Gabby’s slight frustration at the time with how her father had been killed, and there had been no justice, and really there still wasn’t for Abby either and now his Aunt Hermione. It was easy to be frustrated by that, but James kept pushing forward. James quickly looked around him, it wasn’t busy at all, and the chance of eavesdropping was very low—his usual practice for when he talked about such things. ”It’s different this time.” He began to speak. The split had been rather silly in his mind and especially when he thought about everything that happened after. Harry wasn’t in charge and they had new members. It would be different this time, right?

Gabrielle had come to the conclusion that some people, like herself, were surrounded by death. It was a fact of life, and there was no escaping it. In part that truth was partially why she felt so cold now. So bitter and angry. Because what had her family done to deserve that sort of fate? But at least she felt more in control now then ever before. Before she'd felt like she was always at the mercy of fate. Trusting something too much until it burned her. Hoping and praying the Ministry would bring those responsible. Even wehn she'd started training as a Hitwitch she'd felt at the mercy of the Ministry and it's bureaucracy. Now though? She made her own rules.
The island. Right. She'd read about that. "That's a shame. Afraid of the unknown?" she tease a little. She wasn't judging. Going blind into a situation was dangerous, something she'd learned back in Hitwitch training. No doubt this unknown island was quite the political mess right now. "I've read the news. Sounds like everyone wants a piece of the pie, so to speak." While many were cautious the thrill seekers and opportunists were definitely trying to advantage of the chaos.
Gabrielle spotted the change in his body language at her harsh comment regarding his father. No surprise, it was his father she was criticizing after all. He didn't respond though, neither agreeing or disagreeing but giving her a look in response. It didn't stop her from speaking again. "If only others' had that same luxury," was her harsh whisper. Clearly she was very bitter about the situation. Harry's father could come back. Her's couldn't. It had been cruel in her mind to pull such a stunt after so much death in her own family.
"Yes, ironic." Gabrielle shrugged, not bothering to mask her frustration. James knew. The order and Minsitry had failed her family twice. Her resentment towards the Order was even deeper then that though, despite having been a part of it herself at one point. "That people so determined to do what's right and protect society depend entirely on one person's existence. As if the only reason they want to do good is because of that single person," she lowered her voice as she spoke so only James would hear. She didn't bother hiding the venom in her voice. As he said it was different though she raised an eyebrow, her expression showing her disbelief. "How? What in Merlin's name could possibly be different?"

monsters stuck in your head monsters under your bed January 13, 2026 @gabrielle Gabby’s comment was expected, much like how his cousins poked fun at how he followed the rules at times. It wasn’t something he was known for as a child, and as much as his parents and others had tried to stop him from influencing his younger cousins, that hadn’t quite worked either. For now, he had enough in his life to focus on that making schemes to visit the Island he wasn’t supposed to be on. ”Not at all.” Claire hadn’t been the only one to warn him away, and his curiosity only grew. James nodded. Cursebreakers were still on the island, as well as herbologists and potioneers, even wandmakers. Honestly, the lack of control over the comings and goings of individuals was troublesome, and he wondered how his Aunt might have handled such a situation.
James stayed quiet. Even if it touched a nerve, she was right. He was lucky. His father had returned alive and well, even if that created a different set of scars and pain than if he was gone forever. For a moment, he just looked at his friend, unsure of what to say, and then looked away for a second before looking back. The thought that crossed his mind was that if Harry were sitting here right now, he’d probably offer to somehow switch places with Kingsley, even if that meant leaving a different family without a father now. There was a fine line between selfless and selfish that wasn’t always distinguishable.
The Order, however, struck a nerve with Gabby, and James could only shake his head in response and his own growing frustration. ”Because he’s not in charge.” His response was quick and also a loud whisper. Since such organizations were illegal, he didn’t need legal troubles hanging over his head with everything else going on. It was still strange to not see his father in charge or anyone for that matter, but it didn’t mean there weren’t de fact leaders. James looked to Harry, of course, and Claire and even Anastasia, but there were still many disagreements to work through. James felt the bit of anger in his chest, but it wasn’t directed at his old friend. Looking down at the old wood of the table, he paused a moment. ”I just—“ There were notches and nicks in the wood that had accumulated over time. ”I’m angry too.” His mother only knew stories of his childhood because he told her. His best friend from school was dead, and his father had led them to believe he was dead too for some time. ”And I need to do something. So I am.” James looked at Gabby. This is what he knew how to do. It was what he’d been doing since he was seventeen while she had run away.

Gabrielle smirked as James answered. She wouldn't have gone herself, there wasn't any sort of profit in it for her. But still, there was some curiosity. She also supposed it wasn't really expected for Hit Wizards to be ordered to the island yet either. Perhaps if a criminal had been spotted there. Hit Wizards were more specialized towards dealing with criminals, not investigating a random magical island.
Gabrielle knew it wasn't James' fault that his father had faked his death. James hadn't done it. He'd just been caught in the scheme, a victim too it like she was when it came to her father and sister's deaths. It didn't make her any less bitter... though it did remind her that her bitterness was directed at the wrong person. She looked down at the table, feeling a hint of shame at the harshness of her comment, but she didn't apologize either. Nor did James say anything, so it seemed like a silent agreement to not continue the conversation.
She knew she hadn't left the Order on good terms, though when she'd left there hadn't exactly been an Order left. It had fallen to pieces and she'd run away during the destruction. She hadn't stuck around to see what happened after, though she'd heard that they'd split off into some fracture groups. She propped her elbow on the table and rested her chin in her hand, head tilted as she waited for his answer. What could possible be different? His words weren't what she expected and she raised an eyebrow. Harry wasn't in charge? Well, that was different. "Then why did it take your father to bring it back?" She asked slowly. Sure, you could say he wasn't in charge, but if his mere presence seemed to reform the organization then could you say he wasn't actually in charge?
As he went on to continue speaking though, her expression finally seemed to soften. At least her feelings weren't entirely alone. She tilted her head a little in her hand. "I'm not angry, James. I'm resentful," she clarified. Though his final comment... that hit close to home. "James.... that's why I left. Because no one was doing anything. At least on my own I know something's being done."

monsters stuck in your head monsters under your bed January 13, 2026 @gabrielle The older James got, the better he was at managing his impulses, but in the end, he would still be James Potter and would behave as such. Running off to the island when he’s explicitly told not to was exactly the type of thing James would have done. But the past few years had thankfully let him learn when to stop and think. Though when his father had forbade him to go, there had been anger and resentment that bubbled just under the surface. Those rare moments are where he understood how his brother felt the most. All that time sitting, Merlin knows where and why? So his family could think he was long gone? So James had to tend to the already brittle foundation his family stood upon?
But now Gabby was pushing his buttons. Questions he wished he could answer, but deep down, she was right. If Harry had, in fact, been dead, would James have taken a similar path as his friend? Or did his upbringing merely push him in that direction? For a moment, he didn’t answer, but she had to know. There were so many names and egos involved. ”Some people just need inspiration. Something or someone to believe in. For some people, that’s a cause, and for others, it’s a person.” James spoke softly. The rift had been more damaging to morale than anything, and then his cousin stepped away along with others such as Teddy. And while there were natural leaders such as Cas and Claire, the name Potter inspired so much more than Karkaroff ever would. ”Your father was one of those men.” Kingsley had been a war hero and leader, an inspiration up there with James’s own father.
James’ anger was closer to the surface than it had been in a while. Even after all this time, Gabby could waltz into his life and push buttons nobody else could with ease. He didn’t blame her. Really the only reason he’d been upset was that she’d left and not told him. And he didn’t know what to say to her response. There wasn’t anything he could say. ”I’m trying, Gabby.” James couldn’t defend anyone else. If you had asked him a year ago he would have gone blue in the face defending his father and everybody else in the Order. He paused again, letting out a small sigh. ”What are you up to these days, anyway?” What did a almond fully trained former Hit Witch do with her time?

Right. People were inspirational. Unfortunately people were fragile and flighty things. Much as Harry had demonstrated. It was a two edged sword. Because as she'd seen... putting too much trust into one person would eventually let you down. You'd get hurt in the end. Whether they wanted to hurt you or not. Despite not knowing the details she didn't think Harry had done what he'd done out of malison. But he'd still done it and hurt everyone in the process.
Gabrielle leaned back in the booth, arms folded across her chest. She was about to respond, to tell him how stupid it was to believe in people when they'd just let you down... when he mentioned her father. It stung, hearing him mentioned. It made her heart ache, because she missed him. Each and every day. For a moment her harsh expression seemed to crack, revealing waht was actually behind all the brewing anger; sorrow. "Then why hasn't the order brought his murderer to justice..?" she finally whispered. "I've been patient, James. I believed in them. The Order. Harry. Hermione, all of them. I trusted they'd find out what happened." She paused, swallowing hard and looking away from her childhood friends to regain control over her emotions. Only then did she look back. "All I got for my belief was another funeral." Abby. Her dear twin sister. And still, no answer. No justice.
She didn't think the ORder was all bad, since James was still a part of it, clearly. But she definitely had some major trust issues with the organization. She just shook her head as he said he was trying. She believed him. But was everyone else? Thankfully he seemed keen on changing the subject. Right, she hadn't told him. Not many knew waht she did now, because it definitely bordered between legal and illegal. "Bounty hunting," she answered simply. "Legally, of course." Slight lie, but James didn't need to know more then that. No doubt being a Hit Wizard he'd see her name pop up now that she was back in the country. BEcause she could take bounties the Ministry or other European governments put up.

monsters stuck in your head monsters under your bed January 13, 2026 @gabrielle Nobody ever liked to be wrong, not even James. Though he could try to take it in stride as he wasn’t known for being particularly stubborn as much as headstrong. But those close to him were allowed the privilege of being able to rile him up. Much like some of the trouble he’d get into during his seventh year when he’d hear gossip about Ariadne, and he couldn't help but say something. Gabby was someone that he was, or had been, close to and knew where to push. James watched his friend after he spoke. Kingsley had been on that pedestal with his own father for as long as their families knew one another. While he couldn’t imagine knowing his father wasn’t coming back, his loss had been felt by many.
James swallowed hard. When Abby had been one of his closest friends, her death had been a punch to the gut—literally knocking the wind out of him. But—again, he couldn’t imagine Albus or Lily just being gone one day and never being able to speak to his brother or sister again. He stayed quiet, still pushing away that in some way, she was right. But James’ still believed in what the Order stood for and its purpose. ”We can’t stoop to their level, Gabby. Then how are we any better than they are?” The Purifiers. They had no thought of the value of life unless it served their purpose. But also, at the same time, he felt frustrated. If Gabby had asked him a few months prior about his feelings, he would have had a more positive response. But that last meeting discussing unification but also side-lining what James felt was an essential part—well, it had left him annoyed. Almost as much as he’d felt now.
He wanted to act surprised, but he wanted. Plus, her name came up now and then at the Ministry but not in a bad way. It was how he’d known she was still alive. ”Putting all that training to good use, I see.” James gave that usual slight smile of his. Still, he looked away a moment before looking at her again. So. That’s what she’d run away to do. He supposed it fit, bringing people to justice like a character in one of those muggle books Lily showed him. ”You know a note would’ve been nice.” James commented, trying not to sound overly bitter that she’d just up and left without a word. But, James was never much of the resentful type.
