I paint you in the corner of my mind
Forming colors from the rays of light
August 2016
Diana took in the sights, Diagon Alley. There was the hustle and bustle of students preparing for the upcoming term, and she held her father’s right hand while Cara held his left, and they pushed through the crowds of families of upcoming First Years and other students simply picking up their supplies for their upcoming year. She couldn’t wait until it was her and her sister’s turn, her brother had received his letter, and while he was being fitted for robes with their mother—their father had opted to take them for some ice cream. The crowds made Diana a tiny bit uncomfortable, but she managed, and she wasn’t about to show her discomfort when the goal of ice cream was almost in their sights. However, that wasn’t the only thing in her sight or that had caught her eye. Up ahead, she spotted a shop that had a variety of animals in the window, and she marveled at a tiny bird—an owl in its gold cage and how its wingspan seemed to take over the window.
It reminded her of the muggle vehicles she had seen in some of her father’s books in his office. They were used in transportation. Muggles could not apparate, use floo powder or portkeys, and had to manage using slower ways. Without thinking, she let go of her father’s hand and slipped through the crowd, her small frame quickly disappearing within the sea of people. If she had listened, she would have heard her father’s voice calling for her, and perhaps her sister’s as well. But in her excitement to see the owls up close, her hair had turned from its usual dark color to a bright blonde. With her ability, she sometimes didn’t think about how she transformed as a response to her emotions, but now she resembled her younger sisters this way.
Her eyes had also changed to a brighter color. They matched how they would gleam when she saw something she was incredibly interested in. As she approached the glass outside, the shop looked up in wonder. Such a small creature, it was a snowy owl—but its wings made it look so much bigger than it was and so much more powerful. Her eyes trailed down to where its talons gripped a perch. The owl seemed so innocent, cute even, but those talons seemed to increase its danger. Diana thought about its uses in relation to everything else, and as she thought, her hair shifted to a cooler teal color as her brow furrowed in concentration now. But then she felt a hand on her shoulder, and as she looked up, she saw the exasperated look on her father’s face as she smiled innocently—her hair and eye color returning to normal. He’d learned to keep a quick eye out for any hair that shifted in colors, and then he could easily find his daughter.
