▲ With the deck of cards magically shuffling itself in front of her, Rusti watched it anxiously. She had no idea what to expect out of it, or if it could even help her in the first place. Julia explained what the process was, and how pulling three cards from the deck after asking it a question would give her a spread about the past, present, and future. That seemed so vague, especially because she didn’t know how a standard deck of playing cards could determine all of that. Obviously they each held their own meaning, similar to tarot cards, but she was at their will at the end of it all. As the deck finished and Julia prompted her, Rusti thought about what she wanted to ask the cards. There were so many different ways to put it – if she asked it if things would go back to normal, couldn’t that mean she just went back to the shop and resumed work as Isla? Or if she asked if she would find her body, how did she know that whatever had done this to her wouldn’t supersede the readings and assume this was her body to begin with? Standard methods of magic had been fooled already, so it was daunting. Nervously chewing the inside of her cheek, she sat up straight in her chair and leaned forward, as if she was directing her question to the cards. That was what she was supposed to be doing, after all. “Will the magic that has done this to me ever be reverted?” Reaching across the table, she pulled three cards from the top, one after the other, and flipped them over so that they could both see the results: the Queen of spades, then the ten of spades, and finally the nine of spades. Rusti looked up at Julia to see if she had done it correctly. xiulan zhou ● 315 ● The Horror Within by Shadow of Intent MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

February 15, 2026 "Will the magic that has done this to me ever be reverted?"
Immediately, Xiulan took notice that all three of the cards that Aurelia had pulled from the deck had been spades. That all three had been spades was, in itself, somewhat significant, she felt. As spades symbolized negative attributes such as misfortune in life, it was troubling to Xiulan that that was the case. The first card, representing the past, was the queen of spades; the second card, representing the present, was the ten of spades, and then, representing the future, there was the nine of spades.
"Very interesting…" Xiulan spoke, her voice soft and her volume low. Just to ensure that the deck had been shuffled properly and not by suit, she checked the next card from off of the top of the deck and found that it was a three of hearts. Setting that card aside, she looked to the cards and then back to Aurelia, her eye contact with her firm.
"The queen of spades, the past… A woman in your past with dark hair…" she asked her, her voice cautious. Dealing with pasts was harder than dealing with futures, in Xiulan's opinion, because it was often more difficult for her to tell what trauma a person might have had. She kept hers closely guarded. "I'm sensing that perhaps she was someone who was jealous or manipulative," she continued, though she didn't need the story of Aurelia's life told to her, either. The cards were doing their job.
"And the present, that's the ten of spades…" Xiulan nodded, understanding perfectly well where that card had come in. "The ten of spades indicates bad news," she explained, "or sorrow." She decided against dwelling on that. Aurelia knew why she was there.
Xiulan paused after that point, waiting before she spoke. "The nine of spades…" The fact that the nine of spades had come up as the last card was potentially the worst. It could signify death, though death was something that awaited everyone eventually. It didn't necessarily mean death in a literal sense, either; it could be figurative. "The nine of spades typically references death," Xiulan told Aurelia as calmly as she could, though death was a difficult subject for most people—herself included. With the question that Aurelia had posed, Xiulan wasn't completely certain about how to interpret it. "I've seen this card as a symbol of rebirth, the ending of one thing and the beginning of another…" she added. "Perhaps a brush with death, but I don't get the feeling of… a sudden death."

▲ Very interesting? Rusti froze in place, wondering if that was what Julia would have said regardless of the situation. She certainly didn’t want her life to be interesting anymore, not after her last few years in school. Those were hell. This was hell. All she wanted was a break to do her own thing, and it was like fate had it out for her and her sister. Every time it seemed like things slowed down, they were snatched right back into bullshit like this. Of course the first card, the past, had that meaning. There was only one dark haired woman in her life – her mother. And Julia hit it right on the head with her description. Jealous? Absolutely. Manipulative? If there was a picture edition of the dictionary, Pansy’s portrait would have been slapped right underneath the definition. Rusti nodded her head as she leaned even further over the table, hoping to gleam what the rest of the cards would mean. The second: bad news and sorrow. That was an apt way to describe how she currently felt. Though that was also something that anyone could guess, regardless of whether or not they believed in divination. Constantly anxious and frightful were probably more accurate than the other two, but her siblings were definitely distraught, and even Parvati had reached out to Isla about the situation. Everything was so confusing, but at least she was vague in the return letter about everything being fine. As long as they all waited. The final card made Julia pause, and Rusti looked between the table and her. She almost rolled her eyes at the fact that it signified death, though knew better not to, because this was actually serious. In a different time and place she would have absolutely criticized the reading. If only that had come first, because then she could have assumed that referenced the death of her parents, and not the potential death of her body and her companions. “But it typically means death, right?” she asked quietly as she slouched back into her chair to think about all of it. “The other two fit as well…the second card makes sense considering,” she said. “And the first might as well have my mother’s face on it instead of the Queen’s…this doesn’t really give me a direction or tell me anything more than I already know.” It was frustrating. February 15, 2026 "But it typically means death, right?" Aurelia's voice was quiet as she asked about that final card, and Xiulan watched as she shrunk into her chair a little bit. "The other two fit as well… the second card makes sense considering. And the first might as well have my mother's face on it instead of the Queen's…" Xiulan appreciated the confirmation of the accuracy of what the cards had found, but she understood Aurelia's frustration. "This doesn't really give me a direction or tell me anything more than I already know," she stated.
Xiulan nodded her head again in response to Aurelia's question about the significance of the last card. "Yes," she said, still thinking through the meaning of the last card, given what she knew. While tempted to bring out a tarot deck, her inclination was that Aurelia would get Death then, too. Rather than looking to her Inner Eye, however, Xiulan found herself stuck on the idea of rebirth. In itself, it wasn't particularly groundbreaking, but she had a thought.
"Aurelia, I would like to test something," she told her suddenly, though her demeanor remained unchanged. If the other woman thought that she had lost her mind, Xiulan thought, then so be it. Beyond her own magic, there was another source of magic available to her. It was a stretch, certainly, and she had never once tried anything like what she was about to propose to Aurelia. Regardless, it was worth a try. "I don't know if this will work," she warned, but better desperation via that route than something far Darker. "Do you have a fear of birds?"

▲ The silence on Rusti’s end was palpable. She already wasn’t a fan of the uncertainty brought on by the final card. Obviously she wasn’t dead – she was still breathing and in a physical form just not her original, normal one. What that meant for Isla though, and that was assuming a similar situation had happened or would happen to her and the remainder of the group, was up in the air. If they were dead, gone consciously and physically, from this plane of existence, then that meant she would be forced to live the rest of her life as Isla MacKay. That would be at least a decade of her life gone forever, and force her to start over from scratch. She could keep up with the amnesia route, something that had sort of worked for associates of her mentor that had appeared, but what about the MacKay family? They would come calling eventually and try to jog memories that no longer existed and never did in the first place. There was the chance she could get her own family to eventually believe her, though right now that would be impossible. Dusti would take a lot of convincing and definitely a fight or two to get it through her head. That was why correcting everything first was easier than doing it that way. She silently waited as Julia explained that she had something else to try. Rusti assumed it was the tarot cards, since that had already been brought up, but instead she was asked if she had a fear of birds. Her eyebrows furrowed in confusion as she stared across the table at the other woman. “Only seagulls I guess, but who isn’t afraid of them?” she admitted. Rats with wings, seagulls were. That was one of the many reasons she had despised going on ‘family vacations’ when her parents were still alive. Though even that was a loose term because it usually meant they would be blackout drunk the entire time and there was no such thing as a Flint family when they were alive and kicking. xiulan zhou ● 349 ● What You've Been Looking For by Rosie Carney MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

February 15, 2026 As Xiulan expected, Aurelia was puzzled by the question that she had posed to her, checking if she had a fear of birds. She said that she was only afraid of seagulls, she guessed, but she questioned who wasn't afraid of them. Though she wasn't sure that Aurelia meant to be humorous in the answer that she gave, Xiulan did have to smile a bit in response.
"Fortunately," she told Aurelia, her tone more jovial than it had been at any point before that, "Zhurong isn't a seagull." She wasn't sure what she would have done with a pet seagull, if anyone actually kept seagulls for companionship. "He's a phoenix," and far less noise or trouble than she imagined that a seagull would have been. The hint of amusement in Xiulan's tone faded as quickly as it had come, and she returned to the point of her having brought up the bird. "Phoenix tears have healing properties. If there's any chance that they could work to undo what has happened to you, Aurelia," Xiulan told her in earnest, "please, I would hate to keep wondering…" If Aurelia were to walk out of there without trying what could possibly be an antidote to what had happened to her, Xiulan knew that she would be kicking herself for not having tried.
"Healing magic isn't my specialty," she provided as a disclaimer, "and he doesn't need to touch you if you're not comfortable with that." Xiulan herself was beginning to wonder if maybe she had gotten something too bizarre into her head. "If it's too… too strange," she hesitated, "it's only an idea." Yet she understood how rare phoenixes were and that perhaps they had stumbled upon what they needed after all. "If it doesn't work," she continued, "then I don't know how much more I can do…" It was uncomfortable to admit that even someone such as herself, who made a living from her mastery of divination, could be at a loss.

▲ The poor chair she was sitting in was probably going to leave marks in the floor from the amount of times she bounced back and forth from the depths of the cushions and back to the table, but she did it once again when Julia brought her phoenix up. That was infinitely better than a seagull, and there was no way she would ever be scared of a bird like that. It was embarrassing that she even thought about seagulls and a phoenix in the same brainwave. There was no reason a phoenix should ever even be uttered near the foul fowl. A creature of beauty and elegance, an unbelievably rare, Rusti would have never imagined that she would get to see one under these circumstances. The thought of using a phoenix tear hadn’t crossed her mind either, again only because it was completely unconventional for the normal person to be thinking of them in the first place. “I’ll try it,” she stated, trying to sound excited even though she didn’t know if it would work. With each defeat, it became harder and harder to pull it all together. First it was veritaserum, and then a handful of other charms, magicks, and potions, then the cartomancy. After this, all that was left was going back to the island. The source of it all. “I understand. At this point I’m game to try anything. If it doesn’t work, it just strikes out another possibility of what all of this could be.” Or not. She didn’t honestly think a tear from a phoenix would suddenly turn her back. Unless it was actually some sort of strong Polyjuice that wasn’t affected by anything else. If it didn’t work, that would only confirm that it was that much more different than anything magic-kind knew of. MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

February 15, 2026 Aurelia replied that she would try the suggestion, strange though she must have thought it. She seemed to be relatively amenable to the idea, though she mentioned, too, that she was willing to try anything. If that didn't work, she agreed, then it was just another part of the process of elimination. Xiulan knew that it would still hurt, at some level, if phoenix tears turned out to be no more useful to her than a few drops of water from a tap. She didn't want to think that Aurelia was very possibly going to have to go to the ends of the earth and back in order to return to her own body—if the change wasn't permanent—but she was more and more concerned that she would have to deliver that news.
Xiulan nodded her head as Aurelia agreed with her, though, and she stood from her place at the table and motioned for Aurelia to remain where she was. "Wait here," she instructed her. She kept Zhurong behind closed doors for a multitude of reasons, the primary reason being that she lived in a Muggle building and valued her privacy enormously regardless. A moment later, she left to get the phoenix himself, slipping through one of the closed doors off of the larger main room.
Not long afterwards, she emerged with her arm held out at an angle to account for the size of the bird, which was close to that of a swan. In appearance, however, Zhurong looked nothing like a swan; his feathers were vibrant, in colors that had always reminded Xiulan of a sunset. She cooed at the bird in Cantonese, looking back towards Aurelia as she approached the table. "This is Zhurong," she introduced her to the phoenix, remaining careful to give both Aurelia and the bird time to react to one another.

▲ Waiting patiently under the circumstances was progressively getting easier and easier. Mostly because it felt like Julia actually wanted to help her. The woman had listened to her problem, hadn’t judged or tried to waylay it at all, and was going as far as bringing out her phoenix to see if its tears could help at all. Rusti knew almost no one, even before this all happened, that would have gone out of their way to help her to this degree. The rare exception being Dusti, and maybe Parvati – though she really didn’t like her all that much because of everything that happened. It was neither of their faults, but it was incredibly awkward and a part of her life that she simply wanted to leave behind. Playing all nice with the Macmillans felt wrong, especially when they acted like nothing had happened in the first place. She had spent a lot of time thinking about that over the last month, and knew if she managed to get her body back, the least she could do was apologize for being stony with their family. Especially after the letter she had received from Parvati when she was still in the hospital… Julia returned to the room, though Rusti spotted the bird first. The plumage was pearlescent of sorts: a range of reds, oranges, and yellows vibrating back and forth as the phoenix proudly perched upon its owners arm. “He’s brilliant…” she stated in awe, her mouth hanging slightly open as she watched the magical bird return her gaze in what could only be described as an elegant observation of her own being. Compared to the horrors of the island that she had laid witness to during her time there, Zhurong the phoenix was a beaming light that cut seamlessly through the darkness of her last month as Isla Mackay. Even if his tears didn’t cure her current affliction, simply being in his presence was enough for her right now. MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

February 15, 2026 In Xiulan's view, phoenixes were beautiful creatures. They were powerful, exceedingly so, and their immortality gave them an advantage over humankind that some would have killed for if they thought that it might provide them with the key to it. Aurelia's awe at Zhurong was perfectly normal, Xiulan felt, and she wouldn't have brought him out if she thought that there was any chance that Aurelia might attempt to exploit him for her own benefit. "He's brilliant…" came her exact words, to which Xiulan nodded her head lightly.
"He is," Xiulan agreed with her, standing behind the chair in which she had been sitting before and watching as Zhurong perched on the back of it. Of course, she was also hoping that he would be willing to do what was needed of him. Without an obvious physical wound, Xiulan wasn't sure how the phoenix would react, but she knew that she had to try for Aurelia's sake. At least, she thought, Zhurong's presence seemed to have calmed Aurelia's anxiety about her situation a little bit. She didn't seem to be as nervous as she had during the card reading.
Speaking of, Xiulan waved her hand and moved the cards to the side of the table, giving Zhurong enough room to step on the table if he desired. She looked to the bird and addressed him in Cantonese again. It might have seemed useless, but Xiulan knew how clever and how loyal phoenixes were. She worded what she was saying as a request, understanding that it was ultimately up to Zhurong to produce tears or not.
"I'm explaining what we need him to do," she explained for Aurelia's benefit, though she wondered if asking Zhurong was necessary at all. If what had happened to Aurelia was the work of magic as Dark as she believed that it could have been, she wondered if Zhurong was capable of sensing that in some form, too, though his reaction to Aurelia's presence wasn't a negative one. If anything, Xiulan thought, he seemed curious about her.
"However you're most comfortable," Xiulan suggested to Aurelia, not knowing if it would be best for her just to hold her palm out or something of that nature.

▲ Watching the phoenix perch himself on the back of the chair was unbelievably cool. Rusti was in a fairly unbelievable chain of events already, but this was easily the highlight of her last month. Under normal circumstances, she didn’t think coming into contact with a phoenix was something that would ever happen in her lifetime. But there he was, looking like a creature of fiction in the strange world that they coexisted in. She had seen all sorts of strangeness on the island and still the phoenix felt otherworldly to her. He hopped down onto the table where the cards had been moments earlier, after Julia spoke to him, and half-walked half-hopped across it to where she was seated on the other side. The size of the bird was even more impressive up close, and while he had certainly been imposing on the back of the chair, being a mere foot away was even crazier. Rusti inched to the edge of her seat so that she could get as close to the table as possible and then lifted her hand up to Zhurong. She was unsure what came next, but gently set her hand up against his head, below one of his eyes, assuming that was how she would receive the phoenix’s tear. It didn’t take long for Zhurong to blink out a silvery blip of water from his eye, and the anticipation of watching it slowly drip down his feathers and onto her hand felt like it took forever. Her heart pounded in her ears, and she realized that she had been holding her breath the entire time, until the tear hit the palm of her hand. And she felt the same, as if nothing happened. “Am I still the same?” she asked, looking around the phoenix and up at Julia. She didn’t really need much confirmation though, since her hand still looked like Isla’s, and not her own. MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

February 15, 2026 "Am I still the same?"
Gradually and wordlessly, Xiulan's face fell as Zhurong's tear fell down upon Aurelia's palm. If any healing had occurred, it wasn't visible to her. She breathed out softly, the hope that she had in her phoenix's powers extinguished. There was no grand transformation happening before her eyes. Aurelia was as she had been, in a body that wasn't her own. That was it, and it was even more apparent to her how unlike anything she had seen Aurelia's case really was. It hurt her that Zhurong hadn't been able to assist Aurelia, but she knew that it was hardly the bird's fault. He had done what he had been called upon to do. It just hadn't had any effect.
Xiulan motioned Zhurong over to her and stroked his feathers gently, her lips drawn into a line. Though grateful that he had shed tears for Aurelia, it wasn't enough to undo whatever had occurred. Even though she knew that it wasn't her doing, Xiulan felt partly responsible. If only she had sounded some alarm, she thought, then maybe what had happened to Aurelia could have been avoided. As much as she didn't want to bring up what she knew her intuition was telling her, Xiulan knew that she didn't have much choice. The only way Aurelia seemed to have a shot at getting her body back would be by returning to that island.
"Aurelia," she breathed shakily, wondering if how she felt in that moment was anything close to how Aurelia must have felt, "I am so sorry." Words didn't seem enough to express how unfortunate it was. Disturbed by how Dark it must have been, Xiulan didn't know how to convey how much she had been shaken to her core without allowing herself to lose her composure completely. It felt like notifying someone of a death, she thought, except for the fact that Aurelia was still very much alive. It just wasn't her life.
Without either support from the people who would have known her otherwise but now believed her to be dead or the benefit of time to convince the Ministry that she was somehow who she claimed she was, Xiulan knew that Aurelia was in a precarious position. She would be putting herself in greater danger just to attempt to find someone who could take her where she needed to go, and the thought of anything worse happening made Xiulan feel ill. She couldn't—not in good conscience—allow her to risk that, nor did she feel comfortable with the idea of suggesting that she go alone, regardless. There needed to be at least one other person to go with her, just in case anything were to happen.
The risks she faced were plenty, too, but she wasn't sure if she truly feared the possibility of dying. Her beloved Aloysius had gone before her. If nothing else awaited her in death, he did. And if she should be reborn like a phoenix from a pile of ash? Then she would take that as it came. She just couldn't bear the thought of Aurelia's being institutionalized and left to suffer because she wasn't believed.
"If you plan to return for your body," Xiulan began quietly, understanding fully if Aurelia had decided against it in favor of taking on a new life, "I don't mind going with you." The statement was a lot, though Aurelia wouldn't have known that. Maybe, thought Xiulan, she had lost her mind. Here she was, unable to leave her flat on a good day, and volunteering herself to travel to an island that she had only Seen with a heavy blanket of fog covering it while in a trance. "I'll find someone to take us," she promised. She must have had a connection somewhere that she could arrange. "I wouldn't trust someone in Knockturn Alley…"

▲ Staring down at her hands post-tear was like when she first realized what had happened back on the island. Everything was still the same: her mind, Isla’s body. She knew that the phoenix tear wouldn’t work, the same with how she didn’t know if having her fortune told would, but it was the fact that there were still kinds of magic out there that were normally unachievable for the average witch to get, and even those were futile. A phoenix tear, which could instantly heal anything, hadn’t worked. That was actually defeating. More so than being told that she (as Isla) was simply traumatized and would eventually get back to the way she was before the trip to the island. She could take that a hundred times over, really. Her parents had prepared her for that sort of put-down fairly well. She let out a long exhale as Julia apologized to her, rubbing her temples as she tried to think of what came next. “It’s okay…all this means is that I’m not transfigured or Polyjuiced. I think,” she reasoned. “My theory of it being a body swap is valid, I guess…” She blew more air out as she slunk back deeper into the chair again. Taking initiative on her own and having all of her potential leads fall flat like this hurt. There weren’t any tears – those hadn’t seemed useful in a month. And when they had been, they were more out of hysterics and the fact that her sister thought she was dead. All of it was exhausting. The only thing left was to go back to the island, and she really didn’t want to do that. Julia beat her to it though, saying that she didn’t mind going, they would just have to find someone to take them back to the island. Rusti immediately sat up straight again, almost jumping to her feet. “No, I don’t want this to happen to anyone else. You’ve been too good to me to have to go through what happens there,” she protested. “If I go there again, it’s going to just be me. That way if I disappear for good, that’s it. No more body swapping, no more people being hunted by the creatures there. No more dealing with that fog.” xiulan zhou ● 380 ● We Didn't Start The Fire by Billy Joel MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

February 15, 2026 There was immediately some relief that came to Xiulan when she heard Aurelia insist that she didn't need to come with her. As much as she didn't want to see Aurelia go back to that island just to die, potentially, it saved her from pain and shame that she still didn't know how to overcome. Even if she couldn't stand the idea of leaving Aurelia on her own, it was probably better than ending up as an impediment to what she needed to do. She would be a hindrance to her, Xiulan knew; she couldn't risk that for her.
"If you're sure," Xiulan nodded, not wanting to belabor it if Aurelia's mind was made up. It wasn't that she didn't care what happened to Aurelia; to the contrary, it scared her out of her mind to think of what might happen to her even with as much assistance as she could provide her. It was probably as quick and as painless an option as she could have, in some ways. "I will check with my contacts," she reiterated. Just in case there was someone who could be of greater assistance to her, it was worth a try. "And I'll stay in contact with you, too," she added, not about to let Aurelia go off without however much she could do from her flat. "I want you to return safely."
Xiulan knew already that she would be agonizing over it all until she knew that Aurelia was safe and well and—if she had any luck—returned to the proper body. But agonizing from Belgravia was far, far different from whatever was out there in that fog. Maybe eventually she would see it for herself, but the timing and the stakes were hardly ideal for that. Aurelia needed support, but she also needed minimal risk to life and limb… if that were possible.
