Sienna waited to see how long it would take Rhys to say the magic words, and she wasn’t disappointed. His first observation – ‘place is alright’ – had about as much enthusiasm as he could usually muster, which in all honesty wasn’t much. But that was normal for him, and good enough for Sienna. But she didn’t move or respond, because she was waiting for the inevitable follow-up. And there it was – a fraction of a moment later, he suggested the Violet Hound for a spot of dinner too. If Sienna had been in a better mood, she would have laughed or poked fun at Rhys for being predictable again. As it was, she was in a rather terrible mood, and it was taking more of her patience than normal to act like there was nothing wrong or to show Rhys why he was being a blockhead. Now that she’d shared a little about Gus with Rhys, he was on her mind more than normal and Si was having trouble banishing the thought of where he was right now or who he might be with. “Sure, let’s go to the Violet Hound. Maybe if we have a moment we can chat with Vasilia too. But I’m sure she’ll be busy. Lots of customers, you know. Male customers who can see how beautiful and sweet she is.” Si’s tone was dry as she continued after a moment’s pause, “But what would that matter to you? Since you regularly take girls there for a drink. Maybe a little more too.” It had never been like that between Sienna and Rhys – the conditions of how they’d met weren’t right for any kind of a personal relationship, platonic or otherwise. It had taken months for that to change – to add a degree of friendship and personal trust to the test subject/researcher dynamic. After a year, it didn’t seem a stretch of the imagination to consider them friends, but it wouldn’t necessarily look like that to an outsider with no context. Si wouldn’t be surprised if Rhys had never taken a moment to consider what it looked like to Vasilia when he picked up girls at the Violet Hound, and she was less than interested in being seen as another one of Rhys’s hookups. The break-up with Gus had exhausted her, and Sienna was done with attention and drama for a lifetime. She only wanted to go for a drink (or two or three), and avoid saying Gus’s name again for the rest of the night. It wasn’t too much to ask, right? rhys alexander greyback

she's like the mystery unsaid chasing every rose with a daydream in her hand Sienna’s reaction was not what he expected and not the usual diplomatic answers she always tried to give him. Rhys’ brow furrowed—this is what he got for trying to be nice and help a friend. And there it was. The mention of Vasilia. At that, Rhys rolled his eyes a bit and sat back in his chair, crossing his arms. Not even a breakup would stop her from relentlessly suggesting something that he had already denied because it just wasn’t true. Rhys looked away, and as much as he tried to remain stoic, he just ended up looking annoyed. Would it be nice to see her? Of course. Rhys liked talking to her, and even if he showed up alone, it was like he wasn’t at the bar.
But then she brought up ‘male customers,’ and he looked down for a moment. It wasn’t that he was needy or needed the attention, but obviously, the other patrons didn’t appreciate her conversation as much as others. They just saw a pretty girl with the warmest eyes and just flirted with her trying to get a free drink or thinking she was an easy target to pick up. Not that it ever worked, plus they’d always end up talking for some time while she worked. He didn’t even have time to defend himself before she really got to her point. Slowly he looked back at her. It wasn’t an insinuation at this point.
”What are you—“ Rhys was too tired for this. ”What does that have to do with anything?” As if it was any of her business. Plus, he wasn’t looking for that ‘little more’ with Sienna. They were friends. That was all and what that all had to do with Vasilia was beyond his comprehension at the moment. ”I go there with friends too.” Now he was just grumpy again, or grumpier, rather. ”And Vasilia is my friend. I go for a drink sometimes, and we talk. That’s it.” No funny business, as it were. Besides, she was friendly, and she could probably help put Sienna at ease as much as she did him when he walked in after one of those days. Or maybe he’d be too preoccupied talking to Sienna, and she would talk to other patrons. Other men, drunk men that would hardly appreciate her company. The thought made Rhys fidget in his chair a little and add to his annoyance.

Rhys looked annoyed as Sienna made her point, and as contradictory as it might sound, it cheered her up slightly. Her answers weren’t as polite as normal, and he was a little more defensive than usual. But it was still the same dynamic between them, and a dose of normalcy was exactly what Sienna needed. In that way, Rhys was reliable – Si could count on him to be incredibly perceptive when it came to his work or Aware Wolf, but so oblivious when it came to Vasilia. On a normal day, she enjoyed the back-and-forth. Now…well, she wasn’t in a good mood, so enjoyable wasn’t the right word, but…it was as close as she was going to get. “Okay, this emotion you’re feeling right now? Hold onto it for a moment, examine it,” Si said, staring pointedly at Rhys as she leaned back in her chair and slumped against the back of the seat. “Think about the face you made when I brought up Vasilia. Stop pretending it’s because you’re annoyed with me and actually examine why it irritates you to think of her spending time with other men. Then pretend other people have emotions too and ask yourself, what if Vasilia feels something similar when you bring girls to her bar?” Yeah…Sienna had definitely thrown diplomacy out the window. She wasn’t sure it was the right strategy to take with Rhys – in reality, she never knew what she was doing when it came to Rhys – but she didn’t want the drama to continue. This whole will they/won’t they question. It seemed like a cruel irony that all her friends were getting immersed in relationships the minute she had ended hers – Camila and her mystery man, Rhys and his months-long denial of his feelings. Sienna was trying as hard as she could to pretend that she was okay being surrounded by all the romance, but it strained her more than she cared to admit. So at this point, she would settle for Rhys snapping out of his denial and moving forward with Vasilia – at least so they could escape this purgatory and Si could take a step back. But it would ultimately have to be a realization that Rhys reached on his own, or risk missing out completely. So Sienna shrugged and said, “If, after all that, you’re still convinced that she’s just a friend, then let’s go get a drink.” She suddenly stood up and moved around to her desk, extinguishing all the cauldron fires and stuffing her wand in the pocket of her robes when she finished. Si raised an eyebrow at Rhys to let him know they could leave now. rhys alexander greyback

she's like the mystery unsaid chasing every rose with a daydream in her hand Rhys might have given Sienna a pass, considering the difficult time she was going through with the breakup—but she was pushing. It didn’t seem to matter how often he insisted and how confidently he would respond. She wasn’t listening. And it wasn’t difficult to follow her request. He was annoyed and tempted to just leave. So ‘holding on’ to whatever emotions he was feeling at that moment was not a challenge. Their blue eyes met until Rhys glanced back down to the floor. Was he annoyed at the thought of Vasilia spending time with other men? Well—he hadn’t thought about it that way. Rhys could see her leaning casually against the bar with her chin leaning on her hand while a patron told a story. She’d laugh and smile, those golden eyes of hers sparking in whatever light came through the windows.
He’d seen it time and time again, so the image was not a daydream or something fabricated in his mind. But in those moments, he’d just wait patiently for Vasilia to make her way back to his side of the bar and back to where Rhys had her attention again. There was a pause where neither of them spoke for a moment, but Rhys didn’t have anything to say while he thought through his friend’s words. Rhys enjoyed her company and their conversations—which wasn’t anything extraordinary. Except that Rhys could admit he felt a sort of disappointment when she was much too busy to stop and chat with him as if he’d gotten his hopes up. That was when she would speak to other patrons with that friendly enthusiasm that was her signature.
And then there was him. And the women. Definitely more than one. Rhys tried to imagine what it might look like when he wasn’t at the bar, and he was having a conversation with some woman he’d met at the pub rather than talking to Vasilia at the bar. Unfortunately, such conclusions were not as straightforward as logic and numbers or even knowing a counter-curse in his field of work. And it wasn’t as if Sienna was the lone voice on this topic. The gears were moving in his mind, and he stayed silent as Sienna put out the fires and then waited for him. The feeling in his chest was a…fluttering one, and he let out a heavy frustrated sigh out of his nose before he crossed his arms and leaned back in his chair.
”Even if—and I’m not saying you are…right.” Rhys paused. Admitting defeat was not something he did lightly. ”I’m probably just another patron, and that’s all.” And one who drank too much whiskey but also happened to be best friends with her older brother. There was a simultaneous feeling of his heart doing what felt like a flip but also sinking at the same time. Rhys looked back down—this was probably why his denial was so strong because he knew that any inkling of such feelings would only eventually cause pain. But he supposed he’d forgotten what it was like for someone to so easily and reliably have his attention, but it made sense now. Rhys needed that drink now.

Sienna and Rhys had been having variations of this conversation for some months now, at least since their gift-wrapping session in December. Every one of those had gone more or less the same way – Si’s insistence that Rhys was missing something when it came to his ‘friendship’ with Vas, and his stubborn response that Sienna was the one reading too much into it. She knew a little about his history, the strain of being a Greyback and the turbulent past of his childhood and mother’s death – but not enough to guess at what was so hard for Rhys to understand about his relationships with women, and the obvious denial he found himself in now. If she was actually his therapist, they would probably need to start there. As it was, Si was just a concerned friend who was just trying to point out the obvious here. And in this particular point of time, she was a concerned friend who was feeling cheap and discarded and just wanted a drink. Si knew she must look terrible – pale from stress, dark circles under her eyes, her temper a little more snappy than what was normal for her. Knowing that didn’t appeal much to the vain side of her (the side that didn’t like venturing outside if she looked anything less than immaculate) but here at least, it might help her case to look a little sad and run-down. Because something needed to be clear to Rhys - she wasn’t joking around, wasn’t just saying things to move the conversation forward, and actually cared about her friend/test subject. Rhys looked deep in thought, like the gears in his mind were working on overdrive to process everything she’d said. When he finally began to speak, slowly and haltingly, Sienna wanted to roll her eyes. ‘If’ she was right…it was an uncertain sentence, distinctly different from Rhys’s usual confident assertions that he knew exactly what he was talking about. That was a step forward, at least, if he was questioning his own logic on the subject. At his last uncertain sentence, that he was probably just another patron to Vas, Sienna shot him a pointed look. “Yes, and I’m the Minister of Magic,” Si said, as if the two sentences held the same level of believability. She had already finished extinguishing all the cauldron fires, and now moved to place lids on the cauldrons so they would be ready for Rob in the morning to examine their progress. She was exhausted – from overworking herself after the breakup, but also even beginning to get into the dirty details with Rhys. Everything was still so fresh, and she hadn’t really spoken to anyone about what exactly had gone down between her and Gus. No, right now she just needed something strong to drink, and maybe to watch Rhys and Vasilia awkwardly talk circles around the real reason they liked spending time together. To that end, Si moved to open the door and gesture at it. “Come on, you’re buying the first round. We’ll see who’s right soon enough.”rhys alexander greyback [End Si!]

she's like the mystery unsaid chasing every rose with a daydream in her hand Envy. Jealousy. The former was a lifelong emotion, like a companion he’d learn to live with. The latter—well, that required some work to bring out from him. In the past, it was usually Deva. And lately, with this new person in her life—the sailor. And while that had triggered his temper like usual, this time had been different. Rhys supposed he’d never quite figured out why he’d managed to stay away or even begin to let go as if ten years was long enough now. Carefully he considered Sienna’s words. How did he feel when Vasilia was too busy with other patrons to talk to him for more than a few minutes when he went in, especially when it had become so ingrained into his routine.
But, sometimes, Rhys had his own plans. A pretty blonde or beautiful green eye taking him away from the bar and his usual seat, even on a slow night where he and Vasilia might have talked for Merlin knew how long and to Sienna’s point—she was there the whole time. The immediate emotion was doubt. Doubtful that Vasilia yearned for those conversations and time as much as he did at times, he was just a patron and nothing more. The thought brought a familiar sinking feeling to his chest and left it feeling heavy. But Rhys was hardly one to admit that he was wrong so easily.
Sienna’s sarcasm was noted, and she’d finished putting out the fires so they could leave. He didn’t say anything, instead opting to maintain his stoic posture. She walked toward the door, and while her back was turned, Rhys relaxed a bit as he felt things begin to click, much like when he was solving the puzzle of a cursed tomb, and that heavy feeling didn’t leave. In a way, he felt stupid for letting his guard down and not even realizing it, and he shook his head slightly. All this time had passed since he was that awkward and scrawny boy in his school days who rarely looked up from the ground, and yet a pretty girl being nice to him and giving him a warm and friendly smile was all it took to bring him to his knees apparently. Rhys stood up silently, still contemplating the situation—not even arguing on who was buying the first round.
And even if he wasn’t ready to admit it because the doubt outweighed everything—Rhys still had to admit that there was something about Vasilia Fortescue.
