28 January 2026
Though Horizont Alley was just around the corner from Diagon Alley, where Rob worked and brewed his potions in peace, he rarely frequented the place. He'd been much more fond of muggle London, despite his limited knowledge on the subject. It was such a jarring difference, moving from a strictly magical environment to a completely non-magical one. Rob enjoyed and took immense pride in his work, especially his collaborations with Sienna. It had brought him a joy that he didn't realise he'd been missing in his life - instead having tried to fill the void with various women and mind-numbing alcohol. Those things were still fun, but working on Aware Wolf and subsequently a potential cure, Rob felt more... fulfilled.
Rob and Si were just finishing up for a day, and Si had met with Rhys Greyback, who had swiftly become a friend of Rob's. They had similar outlooks in life - bleak, and best drowned in alcohol. Rob had left Si and Rhys to their Aware Wolf talk as he finished up a final batch of calming draughts. The afternoon drew to a close, and Rob emerged from his own haze of focus to check in on Rhys and Si. It seemed they had finished up what he thought was perhaps a round of tests. "Pub?" asked Rob curiously of the pair. Sienna declined, citing that she already had plans with her boyfriend Gus. Rob rolled his eyes, then turned his wicked smile on Rhys, who agreed in a heartbeat.
Donning their cloaks, the pair emerged from the apothecary, bidding Sienna farewell. "I heard there's a nice pub just around here. Haven't been, but let's check it out," said Rob, tilting his head towards the entrance to Horizont Alley. He led the way to the Violet Hound pub, and looked around at the somewhat run down, but cosy fixtures. Sidling up to the bar, Rob ordered the usual drinks - "A Peroni and a double whisky please," said Rob to the young woman behind the bar. He glanced back at Rhys. "Seems nice."

Once upon a time in a land far away There lived a little boy and he drank all day Rhys stood and stretched his back a bit. His sleep had been quite difficult lately. The nightmares still occurred and now included the greatest hits from the island and not to mention he still couldn’t control his heart rate when he thought of a certain redhead. It had left him with many nights staring at the ceiling wide awake, often not alone as he tried to find distractions to his problems, and when he was alone, he had grown accustomed to sleeping on the couch with a three-quarters empty bottle of bourbon next to him. Rob walked into the room as Sienna gathered his paperwork for his file, and he quickly agreed to his invitation. He’d never turn down a drink. ”Sure.”
Sienna would not be joining them, and he excused himself to follow Rob out of the Apothecary. For a moment, Rhys absentmindedly followed his friend until he recognized the direction they were going in, and his heart did that thing where it skipped a beat and then resumed normal function. It had been about a year since Rhys had begun his Aware Wolf potion testing, he’d become acquainted with Rob, who was also a werewolf, and Sienna through this and considered them good friends at this point. Also, considering the amount of personal information he’d had to share over the past year, it was hard not to. They knew more about him and things about him that his siblings didn’t even know. Plus, Rhys was good friends with Rob’s sister Heleen, though she was one of the few female platonic relationships in his life as had been so bluntly pointed out to him at one point.
Rhys cleared his throat and nodded at Rob. ”You’ve never been in here?” It had been the same situation with Nell. She had a shop just around the corner and yet hardly ventured out herself. ”Food’s good.” Rhys commented simply as he casually glanced around to see who was working. So far, he didn’t spot Vasilia, but that might have been because she was at the Ice Cream shop or studying, and Rhys typically was in later in the day when she was around. Although, the past few weeks, he’d been a bit scarce.

Grateful that Rhys was not known for turning down a drink, Rob nodded his approval. It was a shame that Si wouldn't be joining them, but would also be good to have a one on one conversation with Rhys about the direction of the project. They were both werewolves, and both had to go through the monthly transformation. Sienna had the best of intentions, but it was a bit difficult with her not experiencing any transformation - and so it was lucky that Rob had arrived on the scene not too long into the research process.
Rhys had been easy to befriend, considering their kindred spirits. Both werewolves, both black sheep. They were similar in age, and ended up spending hours together in Aware Wolf testing. They knew more about each other than Rob would ordinarily let on. He supposed the same was true for Rhys. The pair strode purposefully through the cobbled streets, Rob leading the way to the Violet Hound. "I tend to frequent more... well, different establishments," said Rob as he held open the door for Rhys to enter first. He nodded at Rhys' assessment of the food. "Fine. But how's the beer selection?" he wondered aloud, following his friend through the doorway.
Rob and Rhys took a seat at a free table after collecting their drinks at the bar. "So, how you feeling, mate? Have you been having that unsavoury itching sensation near your ass as well?" asked Rob plainly, taking a sip of his beer. He hoped the rash was a side effect of this rendition of Aware Wolf and not something more dire. "An absolute menace. But otherwise, I think we're making good progress," said Rob, necking his beer.

Once upon a time in a land far away There lived a little boy and he drank all day It seemed that most of the time that Rhys’ befriended another werewolf, they typically had similar drinking habits as himself. He didn’t see Alfie as much while Hogwarts was in session, and Levi he now and then around his schedule with the band and their business with the Order. However, with Rob ended up interacting with the most, mainly because of the Aware Wolf testing. And while Rhys faintly recalled his NEWT level Potions class, he was still grateful for some ignorance of how the potion was created and what exactly was in it. In fact, it might be better that he just didn’t know—although it made Rhys wonder what it was like testing a potion on yourself and knowing what you put in it.
”They have plenty.” He responded, which was true. Much better than when Rhys had used to stop by before and before Vasilia had taken ownership. Not that the pub had been awful, really he had just needed a place that had whiskey or bourbon and a pretty face he could approach. The bartender served them their drinks, giving Rhys a nod in recognition. They never commented on his irregular schedule in terms of coming to the pub. They knew he was Curse Breaker, but he was also a regular, and he had also realized he had an apparent schedule that coincided with Vasilia’s.
They sat down at one of the smaller tables, and he sipped his whiskey, placing the glass back down and giving Rob a curious look. ”Sounds like you might be allergic to something.” As far as Rhys knew, he had no allergies to any potion ingredients or at least nothing that was related to being a werewolf in itself. ”But no, I don’t.” Rhys answered his friend’s question. If his mood wasn’t already sour these days a side effect such as that would have only added to it tenfold. ”Well, it isn’t perfect until you can take it with whiskey.” Rhys commented—Si had been fervent in her warnings about taking the potion alone and with nothing else. It had annoyed him since these potions never had a pleasant taste, and at least Wolfsbane he could at least drink with something.

Rob glanced between the bartender and his friend, nothing the nod of recognition from one to the other. He wondered mildly just how often Rhys had frequented this place. He supposed it was a better option than the Leaky Cauldron, which was now crawling with old, grubby men. Rob said nothing, instead necking half his beer in one go. A long day of making potions had been draining and exhausting, and Rob was keen to relax. The pair slid into one of the smaller tables, Rob taking an idle look around the pub before commenting on a rather uncomfortable side affect he'd been feeling from the recent Aware Wolf potions.
With a frown, Rob took a long drink of his beer. "Mmm, maybe," he replied. He wasn't sure of any allergies, but it was a potential. "Ah, well... still working through the different iterations, aren't we," said Rob after a moment. Rhys was short with him, but Rob didn't mind the lack of civilities. He was more interested in an atmosphere, and truly a drink. Rhys and Rob had a friendship that didn't need constant conversation. They co-existed peacefully, both a bit sullen at times but both ultimately passionate about their various projects. Rob snorted. "Right. Whisky makes everything better," said Rob with a shake of his head. He cast his gaze around the bar, subtly seeking out if there were any young women who might be interested in a night with him.

Once upon a time in a land far away There lived a little boy and he drank all day Rhys noted how Rob drank most of his beer rather quickly. Not that he was judging, he looked on more impressed than anything. Rhys drank a hefty amount of his whiskey in one go. With the full moon coming up, he was feeling a bit antsy and restless. His mind was so occupied by one thing or another going on in his life it was a wonder he hadn’t just fallen asleep in his chair from the lack of sleep. Sienna had noted his exhaustion, and he’d mumbled some excuse and changed the subject. She meant well, but he wasn’t in the mood to even be polite about it. Plus, he was still a bit annoyed she had planted this seed of an idea in his mind that he hadn’t been able to shake about the very owner of the pub he was sitting in. But it would have been suspicious to refuse an invitation, and he had missed coming here.
He hadn’t really considered other possible side effects of the potion and instead focused on his own. The light sensitivity was the worst one for him, which sometimes lingered for a short time and sometimes for an extended time, though not that he needed a reason to stay home. There were no rashes, but also, he was exposed to Merlin knew all kinds of substances when jumping through ancient tombs and old caves. Rhys might have a tolerance for such things. ”I’d rather have my light sensitivity than….that.” He admitted, giving his friend almost a look of slight pity. It must have been difficult testing a potion that you yourself helped design. ”I don’t suppose you could add anything to the potion for sleep?” Rhys asked with a heavy sigh, it had still been troublesome, but it could have also just been a side effect for him.

Rob had decided it would be wise to take Aware Wolf one month on and one month off. This meant that this past month, he had taken Aware Wolf, and was gearing up to take a weeks worth of Wolfsbane. He wasn't sure how his body would react to the mixture of potions, but he wasn't quite ready to give himself completely to Aware Wolf. They'd made huge progress on the ingredients and mixtures, theorising and iterating, yet they were still some way away from a perfect concoction. Rob downed his beer, drained from the shift in the patterns of the moon.
With a chuckle, Rob shrugged. "Same, I suppose. Almost makes you a vampire too. As if we needed more magical creature blood mixed in," said Rob, signalling the bartender for another drink. He mused over Rhys' suggestion. "I suppose further modifying the ratio of Valerian root to dittany... but we don't want to go too overboard. I'm surprised you're having issues with sleeping," he admitted. "And when you fall asleep, do you have trouble staying asleep? We could potentially add lavender..." said Rob, the cogs of his mind whirring.

Once upon a time in a land far away There lived a little boy and he drank all day Rhys finished off his whiskey, there was no sense in wasting energy trying to pace himself with the full moon so close by. Really, he just wanted that numbness and peace that enough whiskey would give him—even if it was temporary. Plus, he always had anxiety about whether or not his nightmares would come back with a vengeance that made his regular nightmares seem like child’s play. Rob signaled the bartender, who saw both their empty glasses. She glanced at both of them individually, though she didn’t linger on Rhys for long, and he hardly noticed these things as a regular in the pub. The other half of his anxiety now was chancing a run-in with a particular red-head, but he did and didn’t want that.
”I—erm—never slept well before, so it's not the potion specifically. At least I don’t think.” Rhys was not a Potions expert, and it didn’t come up often in his line of work despite needing that tedious Potions NEWT. Everything he had told Sienna the previous year was in the notes they both had access too but it wasn’t a conversation he and Rob had ever had. ”Always had trouble staying asleep.” And that was regardless of what he dreamt, though it was hard to fall back asleep after a nightmare when his heart was racing and his anxiety through the roof. ”Si says I can’t mix it with whiskey, which might be part of the problem.” Rhys admitted annoyance in his voice about that.

Rob chuckled, nodding. "Suppose that's a different, deeper issue," said Rob after a moment. "Are you... are you ok? Like, apart from this werewolf stuff," asked Rob. It occured to him that perhaps Rhys was not in fact okay, nor was he coping very well with that. Shame swept through Rob at that thought, that he had been neglecting his duty as a friend to Rhys in favour of experimentation and pretty women. "I wonder if lavender will help you. Or perhaps a therapist," he mused, taking a drink of the fresh bottle of beer. Perhaps he could benefit in his own right from a therapist. He had a feeling that Sienna would approve of that.
"Suppose we've got to work on a way to mix it with whisky then," said Rob with a grin. "Or if it's the malt in the whisky, perhaps a different liquor. What is your preference to straight ethanol?" he smirked. "Well, I suppose Aware Wolf tastes slightly better than Wolfsbane. Horrible stuff, isn't it," he observed. Rob surveyed the crowd around them, his gaze lingering on a pretty bartender. He frowned. "You'd think after all this legislation passed to grant werewolves equal rights they would try a bit harder to find like a cure or something. Rather than just leaving it to individual potioneers," said Rob.
