Xantha had a few richer friends. They were few and most of tthem she only saw occasionally and never for more than a fun night. She didn't let them buy her nice things, at most a meal and never shared much in terms of personal life. She pretty much didn't really trust anybody with personal details and shared more in order to gain their trust than because she was invested in opening up. She never told them where she lived because she was pretty sure the building was not up to regulartions to keep it safe but it was the only place she could afford. If they saw it was entirely possible they'd get somebody to take a look in order to improve the situation, not always able to realise it just made things a lot worse for her. Sometimes life was just that simple. You took your options and made the most of them. She'd just said goodbye through the window of the car of one of said friends and watched him drive off in mild disappointment when she'd felt a hand on her shoulder. Naturally it was an idiot cop and before long she was taken to the station for... soliciting. How perfect. She knew how it must have looked, considering she liked dressing up a certain way if she did go for a night on the town and since she'd been dropped of closer to home this time it was no surprise people would get the wrong idea. It was that kind of neighbourhood. She'd been at the station waiting to be processed or whatever for about half an hour already, being a total pain for the officer that was due to file the report. She refused to admit she'd been soliciting because it just wasn't true... this time. She was about done and on the border of explaining it to the cop like he was three years old when she spotted a familiar face in the station and instantly ducked out of view of said face. She narrowed her eyes slightly at the cop in front of her. "Okay, if I confess, will you just get me in jail without being spotted by that guy?" She muttered and motioned over towards the man, trying to subtly hide herself. "I haven't spoken to him in like five years and I think we'd both prefer to keep it that way. So can you do me a solid and just sneak me either in or out without him noticing?" She muttered, hoping that her father was still as bad at noticing she existed as he had been for the last five years. This was why she hated police stations. Why wasn't that useless man in Wales where he belonged?! London was supposed to be her terf, not his! @xenon

Evenings at the station were never dull. Often Zee was a part of the commotion, active with everything that was going on in his unit. After a couple of weeks, he started to notice familiar faces chained to the bench in front of his office. Tonight he mostly saw drunkards who simply had to sober up, degenerates caught vandalizing property, and “street walkers”. Just a typical Friday night. Well, so he thought…
Zee sauntered back toward his office with a fresh cup of coffee - he preferred black tea - but his assistant sucked at his job. His face was relaxed when one of his sergents walked up to him with a cheeky smile, causing Zee to stop with a quirked eyebrow. ”Sir, the young Female sitting over there has honestly been a pain in my arse tonight so I’m letting you know she’s here because she told me not to. Suspected soliciting. Know of ‘er?” he reported to Zee in a teachers pet fashion. Zee chuckled with a shrug, turning on his heel to face who they were talking about with a raised brow. He didn’t know anyone in London.
Then, his face faltered. At first he couldn’t believe who he was seeing handcuffed in front of him. His daughter Xantha. The sight caused his stomach to drop to the pit of his stomach as his mouth opened and closed again. Tapping on the younger mans shoulder, "I'm going to take care of this one." He said quickly as he set the hot beverage down and beelined over toward his daughter, who he hadn’t seen in almost five years, which he knew was his fault entirely after starting his own new life with a new family. His heart was beating out of his chest, hell, he wasn’t prepared for this encounter today.
Zee’s jaw clenched as he looked down at her through his spectacles, ”Xantha, what the hell are you doing.” he stated in disbelief, more than asking. Her attire surely fit the quota of a streetwalker in a police officers sense. He wasn’t sure if he’d rather bust his daughter for selling her body, or drugs.

Idiot did not listen. Not only did he not listen, he actually went to talk to her dad. Mistake, clearly so. She watched with dread as he only said a few lines to her useless father before pointing in her general direction. She flipped him off as she did so, highly irritated and with a very strong preference to go to jail over staying here. He probably felt the same way, considering he'd pretended she didn't exist for about five years. If she was locked behind bars she wouldn't be able to cause him any more problems, not to mention his ex wife would probably die of sheer stress the moment she heard. Two for the price of one, right? At least Spot had Mavis to take care of him now, which made a huge difference in the attitude that Xantha was putting up with.
Xantha was boiling and she looked up with a very fabricated kind of confusion as her dad stood in front of her, asking what she was doing. She smiled sweetly as poison. "I'm sorry, aren't you supposed to start with something like.... 'hello, I'm officer shit-for-face and I'll be taking over your case from officer Dungbeetle' or something? I don't know who you are or what you're talking about. I nicked this ID off a young woman earlier this week. Pretty so I figured it was easier to get arrested under her name. I didn't realise she was.... what is it? Friends with a police officer?" Xantha said in an almost chipper tone of voice, glaring poison daggers at her dad.
Was there anything better than escaping this? Well, possibly but it currently had to be insulting her father as much as possible before going back to their old state of interaction, which was nothing at all. Why on earth was he even here? Did he work here now? He was back in London? Figures, he hadn't tried to attempt to reach out either. She had no reason to want anything to do with him. She gave him a bored and annoyed look. "Can I have officer Dungbeetle back now? He was handling the case so splendidly I'll gladly confess to a crime I didn't even commit to be rid of the both of you." She said in an annoyed tone of voice. She really hated being in this situation. She figured she'd rather get stabbed and deal with an infected wound than her father.

Xan aggressively flipped him the bird as he walked over to her to her, a sigh pushed past his lips as his eyes hardened, Adam’s apple bobbed in his throat. ”This is my daughter..” he announced simply as all of the eyes in the busy room were suddenly watching their display. Awaiting her to announce how he had failed her to all of his new coworkers..
The corner of his lips curled upward as he stopped in front of her, threatening to break into a smile when she explained she wanted the other officer back. “You know who I am. Unfortunately, Officer Dungbeetle doesn’t share the same sentiment with you.” he told her, clenching his jaw to keep composure. That name was actually kind of funny. Officer Dungbeetle scurried to the break room to hide in shame.
Scratching the stubble on his chin to look at her, he signed again. He gestured to her with a snap, his irritation rising, ”Get up. You’re coming with me,” he demanded in a stern tone, not waiting a beat for her to agree while she was in handcuffs, ”I have no problem making you, Xantha.” he told her, hoping she wouldn’t make him call in reinforcements because he would. He was not the one to embarrass in front of his coworkers, this could be detrimental to his career and he wouldn’t let his delinquent daughter ruin it for him.

No matter how much she hated her father, Xantha couldn't make herself do something that might ruin his career. He's been there for Xena after all and her little sister was the only thing that held her back. She scoffed as he called her his daughter, as that hardly seemed fair from a man she hadn't seen in 5 years. He was no more her father than she was a doctor. Yet she kept her mouth shut and waited.
Poor little Dungbeetle. She almost felt sorry for him. Almost. It was hard to have sympathy for the man while the reunion was taking place. He played up the authority card and she rolled her eyes. "Fine, but I'm not saying anything without a lawyer." She told him in a short tone. If he wanted to play dad she was fairly sure he had no power there since she was of age. She'd at least removed him from her phone in case somebody might try to reach him if she got hurt. The last thing she needed was more of him in her life. He wasn't a father, more of a sperm donor. It was almost painful, for she'd been daddy's little girl before he'd cheated. He'd been her hero but all he did was let her down. Now all she wanted was never to see him again, not even at the inevitable funeral of her mother. She knew she'd be arranging all of that when the time came.
So she followed the man in silence, wishing she could just text one of her friends, unfortunately she didn't have her phone. She'd have to sit through whatever this thing was and resist the urge to blow up in his face, if only to spite him and remind him that he was not her dad. He had given up the right to call himself that years ago.

Zee was relieved when she got up from the chair without a fight, though she was sure to request a lawyer. His eye brows threaded, ”I have a lawyer here who we can provide you, if you really want to waste my time, but it’s not looking good for you since you already admitted to identity left.” he told her calmly, stepping around his desk to sit down, signaling her to sit down across from him. Pictures of his shiny new family were plastered proudly on the walls . A part of him regretted the decision of taking her into the specific room with the pictures but they needed a private space. She could scream and yell at him all she wanted to there, he couldn’t handle an audience when it came to personal problems. Zee was a very private person.
His eyes fell down to her wrists. The cuffs on her were entirely too tight, which he’d have to mention to Mr Dungbeetle later. ”Do you want those off or not?” he asked her expectantly, expecting her to work with him. This felt like a bad dream, he never thought his daughter would be stupid enough to be caught on the street for anything.

Xantha smiled a positively sickeningly sweet smile as her dad mentioned she'd confessed identity theft. "Such a great cop, believing me on my word when I confess to a crime but refusing to accept that I only did that because you're not my father." She said, stubbornly remaining on her feet. She'd been off her guard because she hadn't actually done anything illegal this time around. "You didn't even bother to actually check my ID." She reminded him venomously. She'd have used a fake one if she'd known he was back in London rather than her actual one. Decreasef the odds of getting in this particular situation. Luck was clearly not on her side in this one.
Her eyes wandered across the various photographs around his room and she wasn't exactly surprised to see that she herself was nowhere to be found. Yet she walked closer to one that carried the semblance of her sister, a sad smile on her face. She hadn't really seen her sister in a long time and writing had become harder over time. She was closer now it seemed. She almost had to be in London if her useless dad was. She barely listened as he spoke to her and shrugged, ignoring him despite the complaints from her wrists. Dungbeetle had perhaps put them a bit too tight but Xantha was quite the slippery girl and her hands could squeeze out if the bonds were not fast enough. It was a neat little trick. Xantha sighed for a moment, regret at the loss of her old life briefly washing over her. Things were fine though, she had Mavis now and Emrys had proven to be better company than she expected. Her world seemed to be growing but it was still so small and dangerous. Had she had a better bond with her dad she might have told him about her stalker but in stead she'd put her faith in Emrys and the man hadn't bothered her since.
She then looked at the man with a cold look on her face. "Are you going to lock me up or not? Because I believe you still owe me a call and I'd like to let my roommate know my sperm donor decided to throw me in jail so she doesn't waste food on dinner for me." Xantha said in an icy tone. They had better things to spend their money on than wasted food after all. On that point Jail hardly intimidated her, as it meant she at least would have a roof over her head and a guarantee she'd be fed. More than she had now. She counted on her ability to shit her mind of from unplessant things completey to get through the rest of it. Besides, they didn't exactly have much in terms of evidence and she could always try to plead temporary insanity or something. This was hardly the end, even if she wanted to strangle her father desperately right about now.

It took everything in him not to roll his eyes at her like the bratty teenager she was behaving like with the overdramatic fake sweetness. Her younger sister, Xen, would never talk to him like that. But he also never forced her to the streets when his witch wife didn’t want a Muggle in the house. Things were complicated. She wouldn’t understand. When she said that he wasn’t her father it stung the most but he contained a stoic expression.
His blue eyes flickered with disbelief with his head cocked to the side, “Oh, so you’ve done this before..” he told her sarcastically, sucking in a deep breath to calm himself. This was a disappointment. ”You can continue to tell me how to do my job, or let me do my job, and you could get out of here.” he told her, his patience dwindling at her attitude. ”You aren’t going to jail, Xantha.” he reassured her, jaw tightening with a stern look as he ruffled a hand through his hair. Aime would never believe this when he told her.
Zee’s jaw clenched, ”You cannot be street walking, soliciting, or whatever the fuck you were doing in that neighborhood where you were picked up. There’s a brothel and crackhouse down on 1st and Vine. If you’re caught over there again you will be taken in for more than just questioning.” he felt the drone of his voice and knew that Xantha probably wasn’t listening to him because she hated him, but it had to be said. He wasn't going to break her free of the handcuffs yet.

He was right, and at the same time very wrong. She didn't exactly have a habit of doing crimes, except things required to keep her alive. She had stolen and sold herself at times but if she had other options she always took those. Crime wasn't her chosen avenue if she could avoid it, but it wasn't like her father would know that. He knew nothing about her and hadn't seen her in five years. She'd grown, in a way, but not the way she hoped for. She stood still then, looking expectantly at the stranger that had once been dear to her. "Fine. I'll cooperate. You do your job and hopefully I'll be out in time to keep mine." She said, although she had no intentions of sharing what her job was. If he cared he would already have known. Xena knew, since she'd be estatic when she wrote her sister and told her the news. Now she just felt tired of the situation. Though not going to jail should probably have been a relief Xantha felt indifferent. Security or freedom both came at a high price for her. She wasn't sure if one was all that much worse than the other. Well, not seeing Emrys would be a bit of a bummer since it likely meant very little interesting interactions. She'd survive that.
She scoffed as he said she couldn't do whatever it was she'd been doing in her own neighbourhood. It was a bad one and crime ran rampant. No doubt there were gangs active and more criminals than innocents but she just couldn't care. He'd overstepped there. Her face contorted in anger and she was glad for the cuffs or she might have been tempted to take a swing at his face. "I know. Lovely girls at the brothel. One of them lives next door. Super sweet girl really. Her boyfriend only abuses her six days a week and her family threw her out. Nowhere to go so one of these days he'll probably accidentally kill her and run off. Not that your people do anything to help her." Xantha accussed angrily. She took a breath in through her teeth. "And I can't live there now? Since when do you care? A friend of mine dropped me off close to home to save me from a walk through the neighbourhood. I said goodbye when Officer Dungbeetle got his filthy little hands on me. You have no right to tell me what I can or can't do, Officer Willowmoore." She spat at him in irritation. "You gave up the right to do so when you told me I didn't have a home with you. It's your choice, you can either be a father and give your daughter a place to live or stop pretending you give a shit when you so clearly don't." She reminded him not so gently. Then she looked at him and shook her head. "And don't you dare think you're still on time to fix things. That ship sailed long ago so for as far as I'm concerned Xena is your only daughter and my father died when I was fifteen. Should make things a lot easier for both of us so you can just do your job and we'll go back to normal. You're officially ininvited from my life and funeral." It was hard and perhaps cruel, but in her mind no more so than he had been. She couldn't wait to go home and forget all of this had happened.

It appeared that Xan had emotions she had to work through this evening, which was understandable in his book. Zee had a thick skin, he could take it and he knew he deserved it. And much more. He just didn’t think there was anything he could say to make her feel better at this point so shutting up would be better. Admittedly, Zee felt horrible for letting Xantha down. The guilt haunted him every fucking day of his waking and sleeping life. A part of him was surprised and pissed off at the news that no one corrected him when he assumed she was of legal age. He didn’t know she was fifteen at the time. Fuck, she was right, he was a horrible father to her.
The look on Xantha’s face was apparent that he made the right decision about not freeing her from the cuffs as her tongue cut like daggers. He knew the look on her face, plenty of people had given him that look before attacking him as a police officer. Some people were sneaky enough to Houdini themselves out, which honestly always blew his mind, but that was usually by the ones on drugs. At this point he didn’t know his daughter, or what she was capable of, and it honestly scared him. Zee knew that someday this day would come and the floodgates would open with his displaced daughter, he just hoped it wouldn’t be at his job he transferred to less than a month ago.
Zee swallowed, taking everything inside him to maintain a calm facade. His eyebrows softened as he looked at her through his glasses, pushing them to the bridge of his nose, ”Is there anything else you would like to say?” he finally asked her after she stopped talking. His heart was beating so fast he knew at any moment he'd break his composure. Zee learned early on his career to let the other party do most of the talking so if he gave her the platform to speak he wanted to see how much information she would give him. Though the question could easily be taken as condescending considering the situation.

He was about as responsive as a brick wall, which Xantha translated to not even caring that he'd hurt her. It seemed her father was a monster. All it did was strengthen her resolve to hate him and ward him from her life. He had no business there and he clearly had his mind long since made up about who she was and what she did with her life. He also had clearly lost touch with the people that were less fortunate tham he himself was, in terms that he hardly seemed to listen as she told him what kind of neighbourhood she lived in because of his inaction. While she'd been upset the first two years after he left she'd been gutted when he'd rejected her a home two years later as her mother fell ill and she had nowhere else to go. She'd been out on the streets before she was even a legal adult and she'd been in a world of pain. Even now she realised just how lucky she was to get out of that relatively unscathed. Things could have been so much worse.
It was the question at the end that did it for him. Her face paled somewhat and turned to an ice cold marble as she looked at him with an almost eery calm. "No." She said, even though the only thing she wanted to really do was tell him to drop dead. It felt like more of an exit line and she knew he had the power of the entire precint behind him in being able to stop her from leaving if she wanted to. She had to remind herself that despite all her anger he was not her father in this moment. He was a cop and she was a suspect. While the crime wasn't all that big and they probably had no evidence she felt it better not to take chances. She took one last look at the picture of Xena, steeling herself against the presence of her father before calmly walking over to the seat and sitting down, waiting in a nearly bored and expectant way. She sat prim and proper, just like she'd been taught and her face was a barely contained mask of polite indifference. Even now it was clear he cared nothing for her, no matter how much she wished that he did. She needed to learn to let go of that wish, lest it destroy her.

Zees jaw loosened as he leaned against his desk, attempting to meet his daughters fiery gaze if she would look him in the eye. He knew he didn’t give her the reaction she was seeking which must have been disappointing for her but he was going to allow himself to be vulnerable. ”I’m sorry for letting you down, Xantha. I truly am. I hope one day you could understand that it’s a complicated situation and I never meant to hurt you, or make your life hard. I abandoned you when you needed me and I understand the damage is irreversible. I know I don’t deserve your forgiveness Xantha, so I’m not asking you for it right now.” he told her, not meant to be harsh in the slightest. The entire situation was fucked up. He wished desperately that he could come out and tell her the whole truth, tell her everything about the Magical world and Aime altering her mind into something much worse than reality out of desperation in the murder house. It pained him that he couldn’t tell her tonight because he didn’t know when the next time he was going to see her would ever be. He prayed it wouldn’t be at the station again.
His heart sank to the floor. He wanted to be able to have a relationship with Xan but he knew that his new wife was hesitant of having her around the house with the babies since she was nonmagical. Aime was scared of Xan, which was humorous, and a little pathetic, considering Aime was an Auror who chased actual bad guys daily.
He held his breath for a second, he felt himself getting emotional so he cleared his throat. Always a business man, he circled back to the main point. Zee gently reached for her wrists, hoping he'd never have to expierience unshackling his daughter again. ”You won’t be issued a citation today and Officer Duncan will be assessed for his performance because I believe he’s wasting everyone’s time by bringing people to the station for petty crimes, or in this case, for doing nothing at all.” he hinted that he believed her, not that his opinion mattered to her. But still. To be completely honest, Officer Duncan was a bloody idiot.

Xantha wasn't used to feeling so utterly broken anymore. It had been a long time since she'd put any faith or trust in her father so when he opened up it felt like he tore at the edges of a wound that had never fully healed, no matter how much she told herself that it had. She looked at him, almost in disbelief as he claimed to have let her down. She shook her head, denying that. "No." She stated. "You didn't let me down. You broke my trust when you cheated on mom, my heart when you left us, my faith when you told me I couldn't live with you and my soul when you couldn't be bothered to stay in touch. Letting me down? You let me down when I was seven and you were late to my recital, but you made that up to me by buying me ice cream and taking me to buy new shoes when I needed those. You let me down when work called you in when we were supposed to go to the zoo together when I was eleven but you took the very next day off to make it up to me. This? This isn't letting me down dad. This damned well might have destroyed me, but you're lucky I'm stronger than that. I made it on my own, no thanks to you. So yes, the damage is irreversible and I won't forgive you for it." Then she paused for a moment and sighed deeply. "But I'll go as far as to recognise your effort in this situation, though it changes nothing." She said then, as if considering extending him an olive branch in the future, should he be able to keep this up. Perhaps, but she was far too emotional right now to make any true choices, although it didn't quite show on her face.
Xantha felt herself tense up as her dad approached to uncuff her wrists. This was the closest he'd been to her in so many years and she could still smell his favourite cologne that she'd once considered comforting. She missed that and she bit the inside of the cheek to keep her composure. She wanted to cry and hug him and have him tell her that everything was going to be okay from now on. That she didn't have to go through it all alone anymore. That was exactly why she bit down, even harder as she felt the urge to cry grow stronger. The pain and the slight hint of the taste of blood reminded her that trusting him would only end in pain. She waited patiently and rubbed her wrists absently after the cuffs went off, covering them so he couldn't see or assess if damage had been done. It was all wrong, after all. By rights, she shouldn't even have been here, which he at least seemed to agree on. Taking a breath to calm herself she looked up at her father. "Can I go home now? It's been a long day. She asked him in a neutral tone, but she couldn't stop the exhaustion from running into her words. This was difficult, but she wasn't sure how to feel about it yet. It was hard not to miss the father figure she'd thought him to be when she was little. It made all of this a lot harder.

Xantha’s words hurt, everything she said was another punch to the gut. She was right, he didn’t only let her down, it was so much deeper. He didn’t know what to say so he stayed quiet, clenching his jaw. Zee wasn’t emotionally prepared for this conversation tonight and he felt himself getting more vulnerable which usually resulted to him closing off. He didn’t like it. The subject of his first daughter was very upsetting but it was mostly because he knew it was his fault, and he didn’t know how to handle it. Zee hoped he could share the news with Aime without her getting upset. He felt like she may understand the sacrifices he made for their marriage more nowadays, but he knew she wouldn’t be comfortable with her around the triplets.
The look on Xan’s face was tired as she asked if she could go home, the attitude from before ever so slightly dwindling. He swallowed and nodded. ”Yes, you’ll be free to go home soon.” he assured her, stepping away from her. During the moment of the cuffs coming off, there was the urge he had to resist of wrapping his arms around his daughter for a hug her to comfort her. He knew she didn’t want that from him. Zee was scared of how Xan may react, knowing it would probably upset her and cause her to make another crazy scene. So he didn’t. She needed more than a hug, that was for sure.
The man reached into his blazer pocket and extended his hand toward her with a thick card with his name and information printed on it. ”If you need it, or ever wish for me to check up on your neighbor, I can personally drop by and state it was a complaint from an anonymous informant..” he told her, holding the card out to her. A part of him hoped she would give him an address because she mentioned “next door neighbor”. He knew not to take all information people said to heart, but since it was his daughter talking, it was hard not to. He looked at his watch, it was too late for buses now. ”Since you’re on the opposite side of town, would you accept a lift home?” he asked her, knowing she probably didn’t want his help but he was going to offer it anyways. ”It won’t be with Officer Dung—” he stopped himself from saying it this time, ”Duncan. Or myself. I will ring you a prepaid taxi if you prefer that.” he offered her, insisting she take it but he felt like he knew she’d say no to prove she didn’t need his help now or ever. At least it would make him feel better which he knew was messed up.

The moment passed and as the distance between them once again increased, so did her comfort. She didn't like being that close, as it brought a lot of memories her way. She didn't like it because it made her feel vulnerable and weak. It made her feel small, which wasn't something she ever wanted to feel. She had to steady herself, which wasn't much of a problem. He said she'd be able to go home soon and she smiled slightly at that. Good, although she'd long since changed the plan from going home. She just wanted her phone so she could text Mavis that she wasn't coming home tonight and so that she could see if she could reach Teddy or Emrys in order to find out if either of them were up for company. Her preference went towards Teddy in this case. No matter how good of a friend Emrys was, it was difficult to keep a clear head around him and well, her mind was foggy enough as it was. She didn't need him to completely desintegrate her brain.
He offered her his card and she couldn't help but give a bit of a sceptic smile in return. "You can keep that." She said, not even bothering to pretend to consider taking it. "All you'll do is get her killed, because he'll presume she called it in. He'll be all sweet and kind and the moment you're driving off in your little cop car he'll fly into a fit of rage and kill her. I don't think the law permits you much more without evidence, does it?" She asked calmly, putting her hands in her pockets as if this was the most normal and grounded topic of conversation there was. She glanced at his watch as he looked at the time and wasn't surprised he was playing dad now. Of course he would, after claiming regret. She'd never live it down if she accepted his help now. "I don't think so." She said as he offered her a ride. "It'll draw too much attention, even if it's not a cop car you were planning to use and I don't like taxi's. I'll find my way home." She said, not saying it but the silence she left hanging in the air after that statement clearly said without your help. She then moved toward the door and turned as she stood in the doorframe. "And I think I can find the exit to this place without help too, though it's appreciated if you can make sure nobody tries to stop me or follow me home." She said with a bitter little smile on her face that didn't reach her eyes by far. She would have said something along the lines of see you around, except she didn't really want that. This confrontation had messed with her head enough for the next five or so years. She didn't need anything added on top of that.
So she left, first his office and after retrieving her stuff (feeling plenty of eyes on her) she walked out the front door, her phone already on her ear as she attempted to call Teddy. For as far as she remembered he lived relatively close to the station (at least compared to her home) and goodness knew he was kind and considerate enough to at least hear her out before closing any doors on her. Maybe he'd just take her home, which was also fine, but at the very least it gave her some semblance of direction to go. She needed that, as the world seemed to be spinning faster than she could keep up with.
