Vasilia had always noticed that Rhys' mood tended to get quite grumpy when it was near the full moon. Not that surprising, the full moon made all werewolves pretty grumpy. While she hadn't gone to Hogwarts she knew that the transformation was incredibly difficult. But it seemed like... the last few days Rhys had been even grumpier then usual. Grumpy enough that even Vas had been feeling the effects a bit, though far less then anyone else. Vas still seemed able to quell at least some of his sullen mood, but not nearly as much as usual. It confounded her. Why? Why was he this angry? Why did nothing seem to pacify him? He'd also been drinking a lot more then usual. Not that Vas judged people for drinking. She owned a pub, after all. But he was clearly drinking more then he could handle.
She'd texted him earlier about coming over to his place after she finished up at the pub and he'd agreed, but then he'd been eerily silent the rest of the evening. It was... concerning. But, as she'd promised, she headed to his place after finishing up her work at the pub, letting the staff finish the evening shift. With her motorcyle his place was fairly quickly to get to. Upon arrival she knocked on the door.
After a minute of waiting, she knocked again a little louder. "Rhys? You home?" she called through the locked door. Had he gone out? Had she forgotten she was coming by? Or maybe he was asleep...

i never feel like this i'm used to emptiness in my heart Rhys blinked a few times as his eyes adjusted to the light in his living room and also to being startled awake. A knock sounded at his door followed by a voice, though muffled, he could recognize. Laying his head back for a moment, he let out a sigh and rubbed his eyes. Finally, Rhys sat up—letting out another sigh before standing up and heading to the door. He didn’t bother to put the bottle of whiskey on his coffee table away or the half-empty glass next to it. A couple of empty bottles were located in various places in his flat that he had leftover the previous week, but he didn’t care about that either. His mood was getting the best of him, and he’d isolated himself out of habit, although when he’d seen Maria, she’d so kindly offered to help him with his mood—though really he was just that snippy with her at the time to the point that she was getting annoyed. However, Rhys was not single anymore.
Reaching the door, he opened it ”Sorry, was asleep.” He simply muttered before moving to let her in. It wasn’t that Rhys wasn’t happy to see Vas. There was some comfort in that but being this close to the full moon tended to override everything. Whiskey helped, though the hangover he still had from the night before was hardly helping. Closing the door behind her, he walked over to the coffee table to pick up the half-empty glass and drink the rest of the contents. ”What time is it? I thought you were coming over later?” There was clear fatigue in his voice as he placed the glass back on the table. Rhys paused a moment, realizing he’d hardly greeted her in his current state. Walking over, he gave her a quick kiss. ”Sorry—wasn’t feeling well.” He muttered his excuses, probably wondering what kind of mess he looked like. ”Hey.” He remembered waking up hungover and trying to keep himself busy before giving up and falling asleep after a few glasses, and now it was apparently late enough for Vas to be off work.

Rhys... did not look good. When he finally opened the door she was surprised by just how dark the circles under his eyes were, and how tired he seemed. He just looked drained. Pale. Haunted even. Vasilia knew that the fullmoon was very rough on werewolves, and she'd seen Rhys near the full moon a full times. But this was only the second time she was seeing him the day before a full moon, when the affects must be at their worst. While not a werewolf herself, seeing him now helped her understand just how difficult it must be.
He was quick to offer an apology as a greeting and she offered a warm, reassuring smile, her eyes soft. "It's okay." She followed him inside, setting her purse on the floor by the door and following a few steps behind him into the apartment. That was when she saw the bottles. He'd definitely been doing some binge drinking. While a avid drinker she knew quite a bit of it must be because of his current emotional state. "Uh, not to late. About 9:30? They had everything under control at the pub so I left a little early." 9:30 was pretty early for a pub, but that was the perks of having employees that knew what they were doing. Most nights she stayed until closing, but she'd felt it was more important to be here tonight. To be with Rhys. It seemed that intuition had been right.
It seemed that he finally realized he hadn't greeted her, apologizing and coming back. That smile remained soft as she kissed him back, hoping it might help him feel a little better. She reached out and placed a hand on his arm, hoping it might be reassuring. "Hey, it's fine. Is there anything I can do to help?" Vasilia asked sincerely. She wanted to help however she could, or however he needed.

i never feel like this i'm used to emptiness in my heart Rhys hoped he looked better than he felt. Physically he felt a wreck, but his mood wasn’t that much better. Seeing Vasilia helped a tiny bit, but even Rhys couldn’t pretend it was enough to completely lift his spirits. Incidentally, spirits usually did the trick, he glanced back and noted the bottles he hadn’t bothered to clean up, but he wasn’t in a position to care either. When she told him the time, he calculated he had been asleep for several hours. The last thing he remembered was sitting down to have a drink, and then there was a knock at the door. And he didn’t even know how much he had drunk, if he was being honest—but enough to put him to sleep and that much closer to being past the full moon. Still, it was a surprise to hear she had left the pub early. ”I hope you didn’t leave on my account—I know you like to be there.” Rhys commented. His voice wasn’t that strong though his tone was perhaps less friendly than what she might have been used to from him.
It had been a month, and Rhys could admit that aside from how awful he felt that day—he had actually felt good. He still worked whether it was abroad or work here at the bank and looked forward to the time he could spend with her or just dropping by the pub, and even Maria knew about this new relationship in his life now. It was…different, but good. It might have been he was still groggy from having just woken up, but even her presence near him didn’t do much to quell the irritability he felt. Glancing at the arm she placed on his own, he looked at her and found himself shaking his head ‘no’. ”Unless you can change the phase of the moon or you brought more whiskey, no.” He muttered as he looked away and physically pulled away to make his way back to the bottle he left on the coffee table that still had some alcohol in it. Maybe if he drank more he could get back to that dream-less sleep he so craved.

Rhys looked like he had a hangover. Vasilia, who was usually more in the business of getting people drunk then helping with their hangovers, was thankfully already a bit familiar with Rhys hungover. He'd gotten absolutely wasted as the pub one night and he'd just had him crash at her place because he was too incoherent to get home. But thankfully he didn't seem to be that bad tonight. Though... having a hangover at night wasn't really something you expected. It only attested to just how awful he must be feeling as a whole that he had a hangover alright. She was a little surprised by the tone of his voice when he spoke. Vasilia was the type of person that picked up on the slightest changes in body language and tone of voice. She read people the same way others read books. His tone immediately clued her in to how best to converse with him, and she mentally started the adjustment. "Mondays are always the slowest days at pubs. There wasn't really much work to begin with." He didn't sound like he'd be much interested in cute responses of "I wanted to" or "I like being with you more" tonight. Plus, it was true. Mondays weren't really known for big pubbing nights. Though, there was a part of her that felt a slight sting at how he'd said "I know you like to be there". She knew she was a work-a-holic. But she didn't like being called out for it by other work-a-holics. Especially not by Rhys, who made it sound like he was saying he thought she liked it there more then here with him.
It was definitely eye opening, and surprising, when he pulled away. That definitely wasn't like Rhys. He wasn't one to pull away, not fully. He was very much a physical person when it came to actions and affection. She'd known this for a long time, and even more so in the last month. While he could be talkative with her, it wasn't his natural reaction.
Vasilia let her hand drop to her side, her eyebrows furrowing just a little with a look of concern. She hadn't brought any alcohol with her, though seeing his current state she didn't think it would be advisable to bring him more. There was a part of her that fought to go get him some, seeing how miserable he was. But the bartender in her knew that it wasn't going to help him really. She moved further into his apartment, but kept a respectable distance away, since he'd pulled back so much. If he wanted physical comfort she'd let him set the pace tonight. Or, if he wanted to stay distant then that space was already there. "I can't help much with either of those... But if you want to talk or if there's anything else..." She knew that was a bit of a strained effort on her part. He wasn't a talker. He'd most likely shoot her down immediately.

i never feel like this i'm used to emptiness in my heart Rhys was hardly mindful of what he was doing or saying, all he wanted was to crawl back on the couch and put a pillow over his face and sleep. He had thought about how he had gotten through past full moon cycles and he always had things that were helpful in their own way. Usually finding a way to sleep through the few days by drinking enough to pass out or exhausting himself by finding new or past female friends. All he had this time around was rum and whiskey, even Maria had offered on account of hour sour his mood was and how he had been talking to her. Normally they were matched but this time around was different. She commented that Monday’s were slow and he could only clench his jaw as he was tense all over and shake his head slightly. ”Lucky for me…” Rhys mumbled, mostly to himself. There was a conflict within him.
The need to be left alone, he didn’t want anyone touching him or bothering him. But also, she usually had a calming effect on him. Rhys was hardly thinking clearly at this point, however. There was a fog in his brain but the heavy kind mainly consisting of his own negative thoughts. Rhys pulled away from Vas and went over to the coffee table where he grabbed the bottle and poured the remaining contents into the glass. But he paused for a moment, glass in hand as he looked back at his girlfriend and her attempt to comfort him. It was sweet, she was sweet but also she just repeated words many had told him time and time again. Even if it wasn’t her intent it grinded his gears a little bit. Rhys let out a heavy sigh and looked down. ”I just want to drink until the moon passes….” he paused again, clearing his dry throat slightly. ”Besides, I’m sure you have studying to catch up on or something.” Rhys drank a large amount of whiskey, he wasn’t good at accepting help and he hardly was about to start tonight.

Vasilia wasn't someone that let people's snide comments or little jabs get to her. But there were some people that... well, they had the ability to get under her skin if they made the right jab. Her family members were some such people. But it seemed that Rhys was now one of them as well. A development Vasilia hadn't realized up until now. But also, he'd somehow found the right topic to poke. His comment of "lucky for him" did not sit well with her. And Vasilia, who usually had some sort of smile on her face, was no longer smiling. Though, Vasilia was not easily riled. While some might fall for his attitude, Vasilia was not one of those people that retaliated. "Is something else bothering you?" She asked. Was his attitude purely just the full moon? Was it something else that was hiding behind his irritation that she couldn't see? Best to give it some benefit of the doubt, and wasn't just him making jabs at her work schedule.
He'd poured himself another drink before looking at her, and she realized she really didn't like the look he was giving her. He was antagonistic tonight, and he was giving her the look that he often gave other people at the pub. A look he'd never given her though. He almost seemed to realize he was being confrontational as he looked down and explained he wanted to just drink. She could leave it at that. If that's what he wanted. She wouldn't push him. Just like she hadn't pushed him that night at the pub when he'd gotten absolutely wasted. But then he just kept talking and somehow brought her back into it again. He was definitely taking some jabs at her tonight. The right jabs to actually get a reaction out of her too, if he kept down this path. "If you want to be alone, I understand. Just tell me, and I can go," She started to say, her voice controlled, to not reveal how she was feeling, but it was definitely a little more mellow then her usual tone of voice. "Please don't talk like that though. You sound like you think I have better things to do." It was a rather bold statement for Vasilia. Not antagonizing, like his own, but definitely a firm response of not appreciating his comment and why she didn't appreciate it.

i never feel like this i'm used to emptiness in my heart This wasn’t the first time Rhys had let how he felt get the better of him as if he couldn’t control what came out of his mouth at this point. But it was what it felt like. The only difference was that he managed to feel a little bit of guilt afterward when he spoke without thinking on an average day. It was also not the first time recently that he’d reacted as such. When he’d visited Sienna in the week following his return from the Island and return to having his feet on the ground, he’d been as prickly as ever. Vasilia asked him if something else was bothering him, and he did manage to refrain, mostly, from giving her a look. But he didn’t answer right away, preferring to ensure he had a drink in his hand now. ”Well, if you must know. Everything bothers me around the full moon.” This was the side of Rhys that Vasilia didn’t know, the kind that a lot of people, unfortunately, ran into. ”Surely the bartenders mentioned it while they were placing their bets.” A snarky tone this time as Rhys drank more whiskey.
How was she so calm, Rhys wondered. Perhaps he wasn’t accustomed to this—usually, Maria would have snapped back by now, or those fiery eyes of hers turned into fiery hands instead. But, nope, Vas was calm as she spoke, even going as far as to insist that she could leave if he wanted. Rhys paused, not answering right away. Out of habit, his jaw clenched as he tried to process everything he was feeling, but the days leading up to the moon were the most overwhelming, as tho he was stuck under a waterfall, unable to move. Rhys might have even felt guilty for acting as he was until she added her second comment. ”Don’t you?” The words came out of his mouth before he could stop himself, but also he felt he was right. ”I don’t need your pity, and Merlin knows you have enough on your plate without trying to fix this right now.” Maybe it was the buzz that hadn’t quite worn off yet, despite the nap and the fact that he kept drinking whiskey as though it was water. But, this was normal for werewolves and for himself. It wasn’t something she could “fix” even if she tried.

Vasilia definitely didn't like the tone of voice he was using. Didn't like the way he was acting. She especially didn't like that slight look he'd given her, though it looked like he'd managed to at least hold back some of it. She still wasn't smile, her normal casually happy expression long long and replaced by a near unreadable stare. It wasn't one he'd be familiar with, though the employees of the pub had likely seen it a handful of times. He continued speaking, making more snarky comments about the bar tenders and the bet. Somehow though she didn't respond. It was an eery silence, as she fully evaluated the situation. Though he was definitely starting to make her bristle a bit.
It was his final comments that finally seemed to cement her decision and riled her up enough to finally warrant action. Her lips pursed together just a little, as a very serious look appeared in her eyes. She crossed to him, plucking the glass from his hand so that she knew he would have his full attention. "Rhys Greyback, you listen to me right now." she started. Her "manager" voice was coming out. The one that was somehow still very even and calm but had a sharpness to it that commanded you listen and feel how serious she was. "You will not make assumptions of what I deem important or not without a proper conversation." She started, her tone practically daring him to argue. "Nor will you ever assume that I do anything out of pity. I do not pity you, and I never have. I'm not trying to fix anything because nothing is broken. Don't mistake my wanting to support you as something it isn't." She held the glass back out to him, so he could take it if he wanted now that she'd said her piece. "Wanting to support someone when they're hurting doesn't mean you think something is broken and needs to be fixed. It means you care." Her voice and expression finally softened at that final sentence.

i never feel like this i'm used to emptiness in my heart There was a silence, though Rhys could hardly tell how much time passed between his statements. The only time he cared about was how many minutes, hours and days until the fourth of March where he would still feel awful but a bit more in control. Rhys drank more whiskey, but before he knew it, Vas was in front of him and had taken the glass out of his hand. ”Hey—“ He began before she began speaking and all he could do was stand there, cross his arms and look at her with an annoyed look on his face. It wasn’t a tone he was accustomed to, nor had she ever called him by his full name. He surmised that Vas could have used his middle name if she wanted the full effect as well. Still, it reminded him of some of the staff at the orphanage, speaking to him sternly to get him back in line.
She spoke about how she saw him in contrast to his assumptions. But they were his usual assumptions and had been built on years of observing how people responded to him. How did they react when they found out he was a werewolf? How did they respond when they found out he was a greyback? How had anyone ever responded to him but with pity or cruelty—it was a huge adjustment for him to think otherwise. When she was done, she held out his glass back to him, but he didn’t grab it right away. Arms still crossed. He looked at the glass for a moment and then back at Vas with only his eyes. Despite his growing annoyance that was bordering on anger, the way she took charge in a split second was rather attractive—he had to admit. And Vasilia knew very well that Rhys was attracted to her, and being so close to the full moon didn’t help. Rhys took his glass back and drank the remaining contents.
Everything she had said—it was not anything he could argue, nor did he feel the need to for once. However, that didn’t change his level of irritation and low level of anger. The act of grabbing the whiskey out of his hand was almost offensive and did the opposite of help his mood. ” You don’t need to convince me that you care. I’m already in love with you as it is. What you think doesn’t make me any less broken.” Now he was sulking, though his only concern was finding more whiskey. Vasilia’s words had put him back in his place in such a way that he hadn’t remembered ever being done. It was a strange feeling, having nothing to argue with in return as his sole focus was on his next drink. Rhys walked past her into his kitchen, where he poured himself more whiskey from a bottle on the counter, returning to the living room holding both glass and bottle. But he stopped, noting her looking at him, but he was just wondering why the stare. ”What?”

Vasilia wasn’t an argumentative person. When she got in an argument it was to end it immediately. She didn’t feed into it. Rhys, though looking thoroughly unhappy about her reprimanding him didn’t fight back. Though her expression had softened after she was done there was still a look in her eyes as she met his gaze after, daring him to try and start something and silently promising she’d shut him down just like she had a moment before.
After a silent moment Rhys relented, taking the glass back, downing it and stepping away to the kitchen. After another few moments he spoke and she almost rolled her eyes. He was definitely sulking now. ”You’re not br-“
Vas stopped mid word. What did he say? She turned to look at him, her expression a mix of shock and disbelief. Her heart, which had grown used to how he made it flutter pounded violently in her chest as butterflies were set loose in her stomach. She couldn’t have heard him right. No. No way she heard that. No way he said it. The room felt impossibly smaller and warmer.
Vasilia remained in this stunned like stupor, unable to look away from him, until he spoke. She blinked, her body and spirit finally seeming to reconnect as time returned to her. ”Say that again,” she said softly. She had to be sure she heard him right and wasn’t just getting her hopes up. But dear god, she desperately hoped she had heard him correctly.

i never feel like this i'm used to emptiness in my heart Rhys heard Vasilia stop speaking mid-sentence and wondered if it was just some other tactic to shut him down again. Even in his exhausted state, he was almost looking for a fight, a more extreme distraction than his own mind at the moment. The whiskey wasn’t working fast enough to numb it. This routine was entirely different, and really it was the first full moon she was seeing him through. Their conversation in the cellar took place a few days after the last full moon, and the other days and weeks of the month were peaceful compared to what he went through for these short few days. Rhys re-entered the living room and placed the new bottle of whiskey on the coffee table next to the empty one, a newly filled glass in hand. She stared at him as if he was some kind of anomaly, which was only pushing his buttons. Well, that was annoying. She could push his buttons without even speaking, apparently.
He drank a large amount of his beverage, though he realized he’d grabbed the bourbon without realizing it. It wasn’t a problem, but he glanced at the bottle to confirm quickly before looking back at Vasilia, who finally decided to speak again. Rhys paused a moment, blinking a few times. ”Repeat what?” He asked, trying to rewind the last few moments in his mind, but even that was fuzzy. ”Um—“ Rhys closed his eyes, trying to concentrate. She was trying to tell him that she didn’t pity him and she just cared and something about being broken—or rather not broken—he figured it had something to do with that, he thought. ”I was just saying you don’t get to tell me I’m not broken, I know how I feel.” Was she asking for clarification on his statement? There was a lot they did know about one another, but there were plenty Rhys knew he held back in his own personal history. Often he didn’t even have to speak about it. Being Fenrir’s son was tragic enough. Then, with a frustrated sigh, Rhys asked a follow-up question. ”Why? Did I say something wrong?” Not that it would have been a surprise, it apparently was a gift of his.

It was so strange. How a single comment could completely derail and disarm her. It was almost like everything else had been completely forgotten and erased from her mind. All she could focus on was the fact that she had heard him say that word. Or at least, she thought he had said it. And the more time past the louder her heart seemed to beat. She could hear it in her ears, feel the heavy beating in her chest. And yet... yet... he didn't seem to realize what he'd said. She was rooted to the spot, but her head followed him as he moved. She had to be sure. That he'd really said the L word.
He, however, didn't seem to realize what had happened. As he finally decided to try and repeat himself she held her breath. Please, don't let her have been wrong. Please let her have heard him right. Unfortunately... the more he spoke the more she doubted she'd heard right. Maybe he hadn't said it. She was just getting her hopes up, and jumping to insane ideas. Surely that was what was happening. Just a misunderstanding...
Though when he followed up with a question she couldn't help but feel a bit like a dear in headlines. No, she couldn't let him know what she'd thought he'd said! That would just make everything awkward and he was already riled up enough! Her cheeks turned a very lovely red. "N-No, of course not! Just thought it sounded like something else." She stuttered out. Dammit, Vas, way to be subtle. That wasn't suspicious at all. God, Vas had good people skills! Why did Rhys seem to break said skills so easily? Better yet, why did he frazzle her so easily?

i never feel like this i'm used to emptiness in my heart With his free hand, Rhys pinched the bridge of his nose in frustration. Why could nobody leave him in peace when he felt his worst, and now he figured he’d said or done something to upset Vasilia now. She was hardly that demanding figure that had grabbed the glass out of his hand. Something about her eyes and her expression left Rhys confused, and he didn’t know what he was supposed to do. The last thing he wanted to do was drive her away. Even in his incredibly foul mood, he knew she was a shining light in his life where he hung out in the dark. Drinking more from his glass, he tried to recall what he had said before he sulked off to the kitchen to find more to drink. Rhys had no doubt that she cared about him, and in turn, he cared about her more than he ever thought he would. It was difficult for him to find the words for when he thought about it, but he just knew.
Vasilia stammered through her response, which was unlike her. Rhys continued to look at her, also noting her face had begun to redden as well. Usually, Rhys was the one fumbling through his words. For how complex his thoughts were, they did not translate well to spoken words. ”Sounded like what?” Rhys asked again, feeling his frustration growing. Everybody else he ever interacted with had no problem repeating back to him things they didn’t like. He was used to it since he often spoke without thinking. And Vasilia herself had no issue taking him down a notch just a few moments ago. With another frustrated sigh, Rhys drank more whiskey and placed the glass back down on the coffee table, and he took a seat on the couch. ”Vasilia…” He rubbed his eyes again. ”Just tell me I’m being an ass, I’ll apologize and go back to sleep or just tell me why you’re acting so strangely.” It was the pattern, wasn’t it? The cycle. Rhys acted like an asshole, he was called out, and then he apologized, and it was accepted, and life went on until it happened again.

God, why couldn't she keep her cool now? She'd been totally calm and composed up until he'd said it! And now he was having her entirely second guess what she'd heard. And waht was worse? Thinking she'd heard that word had... had made her happy.
Her own embarrassment seemed to be growing just as quickly as his frustration and she finally managed to bring herself to look away. She swallowed hard. She didn't want to say what she'd thought he'd said, as she was now sure he hadn't actually said it. She was imaging things. Surely he couldn't feel that way. Not for her. Why would he? Sure, she knew he liked her. But love? That just seemed like a stretch. Though... it made her heart, which was still beating painfully in her chest, sink just a little. Surely he didn't feel that strongly for her. Because heaven above, she felt that way. That was why she didn't call her feelings a crush. No, she was completely in love with Rhys. When she'd fallen for him, she'd fallen hard.
Him saying her name was what got her to look back at him, though the blushing was still very strong. His "compromise" was shit. Tell him he was an ass so he can apologize, or tell him. Her eyes widened a bit. She didn't want him to apologize for something he hadn't done. Sure, he was being bratty, but she wouldn't say he was being an ass! She looked away again, wrapping her arms across her chest. "Y-You've just never... used that word before." She muttered, forcing herself to speak. "You know... about your feelings... for me..." God, she couldn't even say it herself. Because... she had to be wrong. Had to. Rhys Greyback didn't love her... right?
