━ i worry i wasted the best of me ━ janaury 17th 2026
SINCE RICHARD WOKE UP IN winter 2024, life had been fairly different for Dana Knox. The halls and large rooms of her huge family-size home were never empty and the eldest Knox finally held some responsbility of looking after someone yet again. For the months that led on, she nursed Richard back to health and even fought her way through to ensure he would be able to re-enrol at Hogwarts. The down-size of it all was, he had to repeat fifth year, something she knew he would hate. Regardless, aside from what was happening around them, life continued like normal and Dana couldn't ask for anything more.
Except...Potentially a watch for her younger brother. In the freezing cold, wrapped in a coat she was pretty sure she was gifted, the blonde stood - waiting for the arrival of the Hogwarts students at Hogsmeade. It was after all, the weekend they were allowed away again, the first one since the new term began. Looking down at her watch and up at her surroundings, Dana continued to wait. It hadn't even been a month or so since she last saw Richard, but spending time with him was far better than working on tasks she actually needed to do.
Dana smiled small as she saw a few Hogwarts students pass by, some younger, some older and it only reminded her of her time at the Wizarding school. She spent some of her best moments there and her worst moments, but she wouldn't exchange it for anything.

LEG PEDDLING MADLY, RICHIE SKATED TOWARD the streets of Hogsmeade like his life depended on it. He'd gotten himself in to a right mood from the get go. The boy rooming in the bed next to him was, in Richie's humble opinion, a right arse. Always moving his things, or kicking his shoes off at the bottom of Richie's bed. They often came to blows, Richie's temper flaring hotly. It had been a situation just like that that had made him late to meet his sister.
When the streets became too cobbled to skate on, Richie lifted his board and ran instead. Flushed crimson and sweating through his jumper when Dana's golden head came in to view above the crowd of other students. Curled around her coat and blowing on misty breaths, it was only her appearance that made Richie realise he was cold. The nip stinging his nose and the exposed tips of his ears. He'd left in such a hurry that he'd come out without a robe.
"Dana!" He called, lifting a clumsy hand to wave as he slowed to a jog until he was placed in front of her. "You waited." Richie declared like it wasn't obvious. Hair slicked sweaty against his brow until he palmed it away absently. "I got in to a fight." He informed her bluntly, shrugging his shoulder as his board slapped against his thigh loosely. "My dorm mate keeps touching my stuff." He added hotly, the thought grinding his teeth angrily. It wasn't a real fight, Richie thought. Just a verbal assault and a shoe thrown at the wall. Nothing major.

━ i worry i wasted the best of me ━ AS HER EARS BEGAN TO tint red, Dana feared that Richie probably wasn't coming today - despite their owls and arrangements. She knew she could get over it, while present her disappointment in a howler addressed to him, to embarrass him in the same way she felt embarrassed by staying out in the cold while her body-parts went red and blue. Just as Dana almost decided on leaving, she heard her name being called by that one familiar voice and with a smile she waited for a moment longer, seeing her brother peek out of the crowd he was running within.
"You idiot." She began, looking down at his board and then his overall appearance. It was as if Dana knew he would be up to no good, so she brought an additional jacket and accessories to keep either herself or her brother warm. Flicking his forehead, Dana then pulled out the coat from her bag and a hat that would also cover her brothers ears before seemingly helping him into both. "It's freezing and you decided to leave without a robe or anything to keep you warm because of a fight?" She questioned him, knowing the answer he was probably bound to give her would've been an excuse.
"You're lucky I'm an actual decent sister who cares for your wellbeing" She nagged teasingly, the smile on her face being proof of it. She enjoyed having responsibility over her brother and his actions but there were certain times she couldn't defend him - this being one of them. "You're also lucky I missed you, otherwise I would've went home by now. Didn't we agree to be early here? Fight or not, you either hit him or tell one of your Professors that he's getting on your nerves."

RICHIE WAS JUST AN INCH TALLER THAN HIS sister, but she was taller in her boots. It made it twice as mortifying when, upon stopping in front of her, she produced two bundles of fabric. Richie's adrenaline from exertion making him simply stare as she pulled a hat down over his head and shucked a coat around his stiff shoulders. "Dana..." He whined with a scowl, swatting at her gloved hands as she tugged the hat down over his head, flattening his unruly hair and bending his neck uncomfortably.
"Stop!" He demanded, ducking out from under her grabbing hands, though he shivered instinctively at the sudden absence of cold. Before the accident, there had been nothing particularly special about his relationship with his big sister. She'd annoyed him in the summer, had rubbed in her superior age when they bickered. Post-accident, their dynamic had shifted dramatically. She was older, and oppressively protective. Dana was also, incidentally, his legal guardian. That had taken some getting used to.
"Jesus," He emphasised, though he burrowed in to the coat. "I thought you'd think I wasn't coming." He grumbled, snatching the hat of his head in protest, it was far too small for him anyway. In reality, he had simply not even gave his robes a second thought as he had snatched his board and stormed out of his dorm room, a scream clawing at the back of his throat.
"So you keep telling me." Richie retorted, his eyes shifting distractedly around the bustling streets of Hogsmeade. Privately, Richie had anxiously awaited his sister's arrival the entire week prior to planning. Dana had become the only true constant in Richie's life after the accident. Her voice was soothing when he furiously angry, or desperately upset. Dana was the only steady thing Richie had outside of Hogwarts. Handing her back the hat expectantly, Richie edged towards the Three Broomsticks, feeling out of place standing on the street.
"Okay..." He muttered without agreeing with her, dropping his chin slightly as he flinched away from the shoulder of a passer-by. "Next time I'll just smash his face in." He commented, eyeing his sister in his peripheral. "I'm hungry." He told her as a segue, not even attempting to hide his obvious shift in topics. Richie had lost his ability to be subtle somewhere between oblivion and consciousness. "Can we get chips?" He asked her, stepping forward to hold the door open to the pub for Dana, as someone slipped out on the street and left it swinging.

━ i worry i wasted the best of me ━ DRESSING HER YOUNGER BROTHER AS she would when the two of them were younger, Dana wasn't as surprised when Richie demanded for her to stop, backing away from her hands and overall touch. She let out a quiet sigh, knowing she was probably being too overprotective and overpowering yet again but since her younger brother had awoken from his coma, making sure he was safe and well had seemingly become her number one priority across the board. "I'm sorry.." The elder mumbled, knowing that she had taken it too far.
As Richie continued, grumbling on about how Dana assumed he wouldn't even be coming, the blonde put out a hand for the hat, not even realising it didn't even fit him anymore. "We can trade.." She offered, motioning to her own hat - knowing it would be larger and probably more comfortable. As he handed her the hat, Dana's lips formed a soft smile, knowing that while the two of them had their differences in age and even in their daily lives - nothing could really change the bond between the both of them.
"Good." She smiled, somewhat proud that he would take her bad advice. "Then I'll be back at Hogwarts for a brief meeting about it. I always love coming there you know?" It wasn't entirely a lie nor the truth, especially since Dana found out the worse sort of news while in Hogwarts but also spent a lot of her best moments there too. As the topic changed, Dana felt her eyes rolling, knowing that he somewhat planned it all.
Letting out a quiet sigh, Dana nodded towards her brother, waiting for the person to slip past the two of them before stepping into the pub and holding the next door open for her younger brother. "You're not getting out of this you know. You're telling me everything or no chips. Got it?"
