I know you're hoping to find Someone who's going to give you peace of mind James crossed his arms as he stood tall and surveyed the room. So far, so good. Students were mingling with various adults, and he could spot many familiar faces from his own work and the Order. Cade appeared to be talking to Bianca, they had been working together quite a bit, but he was also secretly thankful that it kept Bianca off his back for using this particular floor to host. There were also familiar faces from his school days, except that these students who were about to venture into the world were no longer the 4th years that he had left behind. Brigh was confidently approaching a Cursebreaker—Rhys, and he spotted another student approach his cousin Harper and another student approach his former classmates. It was a shame, however, that Phoenix Rising had not officially been sanctioned by the Order as this was also a good recruitment opportunity.
Uncrossing his arms, he strolled on the outskirts of the crowd until he spotted blonde hair but familiar blonde hair. Oh, right, his longtime neighbors. But, James didn’t approach at first because, if he was honest, he had trouble differentiating the triplets. The only one he had remotely gotten close to was their oldest brother. And it didn’t seem that he, his sister, nor the twins had trouble telling them apart. James tried to rattle his brain as he approached. Obviously, he was a recognizable figure in the room (even without his nametag), and he smiled. ”Hey Pey..Perse..no. Penelope!” The name popped into his head after cycling through all three of the triplets' names. But he wondered if they were used to that. Then again, his own brother Albus sulked around for a week if anyone called him “James” on accident. ”Have you spoken to anyone here? How is your family?” James asked. It had been some time since he’d seen any of her family—with his life as a Hit-Wizard and Order work.

March 19, 2026 Checking out the career fair was definitely interesting for Penelope. Even though she had technically been receiving career advice since her fifth year, she had never been completely sold on any one path in life. She didn't think that that meant that she had commitment issues, but there was nothing that stood out to her as not having any drawbacks. She knew that she wanted to be able to travel and see the world, for instance, but she couldn't see herself risking life and limb to do that with Curse-Breaking. It wasn't the right fit for her, and neither was Auror training or Healing or anything else that required her to have high marks and the ability not to buckle under pressure. As far as most of her peers were concerned, at least, that didn't leave her with too many options. Maybe she could get some job at the Ministry? It would be boring and probably relatively unfulfilling, but it would be a job. She wandered around, trying to look for anyone representing anything that actually caught her attention. Just as she was prepared to resign herself to the fact that she was likely going to come away from this event with nothing to show for it, she heard someone calling out her name (after having run through Peyton's and Persephone's names first, but she supposed that that was to be expected). Penelope was used to being called by names that weren't her own, not that she was a huge fan of it, but that could be forgiven when she realized who it was: James Potter. Living in Godric's Hollow, the Potters happened to be her family's neighbors, so she had grown up around them in addition to attending Hogwarts with them. "Have you spoken to anyone here? How is your family?" James had asked her before she could ask him the same. "Hi, James," Penelope smiled back at him. She wasn't a passive aggressive person and wouldn't dare to call him by the wrong name in response. "My family are alright," she nodded. Peyton and Persephone were probably floating around somewhere. "And I… don't really know what I want to do yet?" She knew that that probably sounded bad, but that was why she was there. james sirius potter

I know you're hoping to find Someone who's going to give you peace of mind James looked curiously at Penelope. Godric’s Hollow was still home for him, but their neighbors had hardly changed since he’d been born. The kids would come together to play Quidditch in the Potter’s yard, and James remembered how his mother would be in Cormac McLaggen’s face from time to time and beaming with pride because of it. Not all of the Bainbridges had participated, but they’d watch the chaos of Weasleys, Potters, and the other kids play and break every rule possible at the same time. Penelope seemed a bit lost or at least unsure. Sometimes events such as this could be overwhelming unless one had a clear goal in mind. ”Well—sometimes you don’t know what you’re going to do until you do it.” That was more or less how he had stumbled into his current career.
”I always thought I’d go into Quidditch like my mum, or everyone expected me to be an Auror like my dad.” James admitted out loud. Not that it was a secret, and despite Krum taking the House Team captain’s spot right from under him, he had deserved it far more than James did. It didn’t mean he was any less of a Quidditch player, but he’d hardly shown the same ambition for leadership at that age as he did now. ”Your brother’s been playing alright—he enjoying it?” James kept up with the Quidditch news and matches, though the past couple of months, he’d been keeping up less due to other distractions. But Dustin was his age and had grown up alongside himself a couple of his cousins like Harper. James always figured he’d see him in the big leagues.

March 19, 2026 Compared to so many other people who seemed to have an exact plan or who claimed that that had always known what they wanted to do with their life, James was honest with her that sometimes you just had to do something to know that it was what you were going to do. For example, he said, "I always thought I’d go into Quidditch like my mum, or everyone expected me to be an Auror like my dad."
Penelope couldn't imagine the pressure that he was under. She had the pressure of being one of the youngest three in her family, but that was about it. She didn't have the Quidditch pressure to any real extent because she had never played it, even though it might have been nice for her to meet a level of fame comparable to Dustin's. Her parents weren't unsuccessful, either, but they also weren't James's parents. She didn't have the entire magical world waiting to see what she was going to do with her life, and that made her feel slightly better about her own situation.
Back to the subject of Dustin, though, as was to be expected, James asked if he was enjoying Quidditch. Penelope nodded. He didn't talk very much about it, and they weren't in close communication, really. "Yeah, he's enjoying it," she said to answer James verbally, even though she didn't mention that she doubted that Dustin would say anything to her about it if he wasn't finding the life of a professional Quidditch player to be everything that he had expected it to be.

I know you're hoping to find Someone who's going to give you peace of mind The Bainbridge family was unique, but James had grown accustomed to their presence during his life. Their oldest was his age, and they’d always gotten along well. The twins were very distinct personalities, and he’d found Diana always preferred a book to trying to play Quidditch with the rough crowd that was the Weasley clan. Cara was more interested in her writing, and Kinsey had always been more reserved as well. The triplets were also far younger and James still obviously had trouble telling them apart.
Penelope confirmed that Dustin seemed to be enjoying his career, and James envied that a little bit. Times changed the older they all got. Lily wasn’t a small child trying to climb on a broomstick that was much too tall for her and running over a triplet in the process. James still envied those that hadn’t been forced to face the reality of the world so quickly and so young, but he still felt he couldn’t complain in comparison to the things his father had gone through. ”I ran into Cara at Fortescue’s the other day, but what is Diana up to these days?” James asked curiously, now that he thought about it.

March 19, 2026 "I ran into Cara at Fortescue's the other day," James mentioned, "but what is Diana up to these days?"
"Er," Penelope paused. She really didn't know how to answer that question any more than he did, if she was honest with him. Looking down and shifting her weight between her feet, she murmured out her answer. "That's a good question," she replied shyly. She wanted to know what was so important that Diana no longer wanted to spend time with her or the rest of their family. "I haven't really seen her, so…" Penelope's voice trailed off, and she didn't want to make things any more awkward for James than they probably already were at that point. "…Yeah." She really couldn't do anything about it, so she knew that she couldn't let it bother her. Still, it did bother her.
"But Di—er, Cara's—working at Fortescue's still," she confirmed, trying to get off the subject.

I know you're hoping to find Someone who's going to give you peace of mind James really had not intended to ask an awkward question, though, by Penelope’s response, he realized that he had. Despite his time visiting his home, he did spend quite a bit of time at Number Twelve instead, and checking in on the neighbors had not been that much of a priority. ”Right…” Maybe Diana was like Albus in wanting to get out of the house, though he could only assume at this point. James had not gotten that close to the girls and had focused on Quidditch with their older brother instead.
”I don’t get to go there as often as I like.” James reminisced in the days when they would be getting their school supplies and would stop by for a sundae. The Fortescue children were often there, though James had not grown close with any of them. Out of the corner of his eye, he spotted a familiar set of gray eyes looking at him—the Head Hitwizard. ”Erm—I need to get back to my table.” It was time for James to convince eager seventh-years to join the Hitwizard Squad. ”It was good to see you, Penelope. Say hello to your family for me.” James said with his usual friendly grin.

March 19, 2026 Penelope felt bad for not having just lied to James about how Diana was because it had made their conversation awkward, but she would have felt even worse about lying. It could have been worse, though. Diana could have been in Azkaban, but the prison didn't exist anymore anyway.
At least James recognized that they needed to change the subject from Diana to what Cara was doing. "I don’t get to go there as often as I like," he said about the ice cream parlor. That was true for Penelope, too, though they sometimes got lucky on more recent Hogsmeade visits and and got to get ice cream from the Fortescues' ice cream cart. It wasn't the same as going into the ice cream parlor itself, but at least they got the ice cream out of it that they would have gotten if only they could travel from Hogwarts to Diagon Alley.
"It's really—" Penelope began to reply, but James looked distracted suddenly.
"Erm—I need to get back to my table," he informed her, and Penelope realized that they were—or he was—being watched. "It was good to see you, Penelope. Say hello to your family for me."
Penelope, embarrassed that she'd kept James chatting for so long, nodded and spoke quickly. "I will. It was good to see you," she told him, her words running together. What else was there to look into for a possible career?
