March 1, 2026 Fae respectfully declined her offer of something to drink but wondered if she could do a reading of an object. That was certainly different, in Xiulan's opinion, but she waited for Fae to explain herself. It was the staff that Fae had with her that she set upon the table, allowing Xiulan to take in the full length of it. "This staff is of utmost importance to the barrier that once protected Hy-Brasil…" Fae spoke, her voice trailing. She asked if there were anything that she could glean from it, as that would be of great benefit. Looking over the enormity of the staff, Xiulan was in awe. It was clear that it was of importance, but she wasn't a specialist in the properties of wood or enchantments or anything that seemed remotely helpful. Xylomancy was the closest thing that came to mind, but even that wouldn't have been of any assistance. Calling upon a wandmaker, perhaps, would be more useful. "The staff itself?" Xiulan asked for the sake of clarification, looking over the staff again. What answers did Fae want or need? Surely she hadn't been carrying the thing through Muggle London without being aware that it was clearly very powerful, especially in the wrong hands… "By 'information', do you mean that you want to know its origins, or…?"fae iona cloudbreaker

▲ “Yes, the staff itself.” Fae knew that was a bit of an odd request. Anyone that looked at a magical conduit that had the appearance of an overly large stick would be a little confused at first too. She had never heard of someone attempting what she was asking of Julia, though she didn’t see why it would fail either. Conduits were of magical origin, and Merlin’s staff was full of that. Aside from the islands of Hy-Brasil and Yrisle, Fae couldn’t think of anything else she had come into contact with that exuded as much magical essence as this thing did. She was sure that there were objects out there that rivaled the ancient staff, but she had never encountered any of them yet. When it came to Julia’s actual question on what Fae wanted known, that was a bit trickier without divulging all of the information she already had on the staff. Fae wavered for a moment, thinking about how she could answer. There were only a few choices she had: tell Julia the bare minimum like she already had, maybe sprinkling a couple more minor details in that could help, or give her everything. The woman had already agreed to visit Hy-Brasil to talk with the elders, which told Fae that there was some trust already being forged here. She chewed on her bottom lip as she tried to find the best words to explain what she was thinking. “The staff…I already of know its origins,” Fae hesitated again. “It once belonged to Merlin. I am trying everything I can to see if there is some way I can find what magic he used to form our island’s barrier. If it was as simple as casting a normal barrier charm, I would have done so already.” With her own magic and the power of the staff, she probably could put up something more than the sub-standard one the Ministry had helped with. She wasn’t even sure if it covered the entirety of the island. It wasn’t like there were any more animals left to escape now. xiulan zhou ● 349 ● Drive to Santa Mira by John Carpenter, Alan Howarth MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

It was, in fact, the staff itself that Fae wanted to have examined. As much as Xiulan would have liked to be of assistance to her, she didn't really know what she could do for her there. She knew that she was much more talented than most at divination and appreciated that Fae thought so highly of her abilities. In reality, though, that didn't make her a jack-of-all-trades, even if it would have been awfully nice. Could she determine if it were cursed or enchanted, provided that she had the right set of tools? Probably. Could she determine much more than that? Probably not. Just as she was prepared to explain to Fae that she probably couldn't do what Fae desired to have done, Xiulan's eyes widened at what Fae had to say about the staff. She already knew of its origins, she said, because it had belonged to Merlin. It was even older and more powerful than Xiulan had thought just from looking at it. Merlin was one of the most powerful wizards to have existed in the entire world, so anything that had once belonged to him that hadn't been destroyed over the centuries was likely to be unique. The massive liability that was going around Muggle London while carrying something of that nature, never mind an ordinary magical conduit of that size, was also notable. Fae, meanwhile, seemed as focused as ever. "I am trying everything I can to see if there is some way I can find what magic he used to form our island's barrier," she explained. "If it was as simple as casting a normal barrier charm, I would have done so already." Xiulan nodded her head. She knew that she had heard everything properly, but it took her another moment or two to figure out what to say to all that. It wasn't every day that the High Druid showed up to her flat with Merlin's staff. "Fae…" Xiulan began, feeling for the urgency of the situation for the High Druid and her people but not knowing what she could do about it. "Thank you for your trust in me," she acknowledged, "but I'm—I'm not… capable of doing that." Working with some sort of tracking spell might have been possible, if not for the fact that that barrier was probably millennia old. "There must be historical records somewhere?" she suggested. There must have been. fae iona cloudbreaker

▲ It had been months since she had felt this way; finding a potential lead that could crack the mystery behind the barrier. The buzz in her head as she spoke quickly and carefully about the staff had caused her hair to start turning a vibrant orange, the first that had happened in months as well. This was all a lead up for potential disappointment, but getting Julia to come to Hy-Brasil was still a win no matter what happened next. The woman let her down nicely, which was something that the Ministry failed to do whenever she dealt with them on anything regarding her people. The orange quickly dulled and moved back to its normal whitish-straw color as Fae composed herself again. She let her feelings show, which she wasn’t supposed to be doing as High Druid. At least not in this manner. Of course Julia couldn’t find out anything from the staff. None of the elders had, and nothing against the woman before her, but the elders were extremely knowledgeable and talented in understanding different magicks. That was only one of the reasons Fae wanted the two parties to meet face to face. “I understand,” she said as she picked the staff back up. It felt strange to have set it down in the first place, as it had practically been glued to her since October. Letting it out of her sight was never going to happen, and she wondered how difficult it would be once it returned to protect Hy-Brasil again. “I have a meeting with Ministry employees tomorrow to inquire about that. Hy-Brasil may have something, but I have combed through all that I know of so far. I believe you are correct in that there has to be records somewhere.” Merlin was an elusive figure outside general texts and history books. A deeper dive into private records, druid and Ministry alike, was sure to provide her with the answer she was looking for. Digging through her small satchel that she had on her hip, Fae produced a scrap of tree bark and a crude pencil. She quickly scribbled down the name of one of the druid contacts she had within the Ministry. “You will want to reach out to this person when you are ready to travel to Hy-Brasil,” Fae explained as she held out the bark. March 1, 2026
Fae's hair changed in color, becoming a vibrant orange and then fading again to its less remarkable blonde—all without a word. The sudden change was surprising but not a shock. Xiulan was familiar with Metamorphmagi abilities, but she hadn't expected Fae to be one. "I understand," Fae told her when she spoke again. She picked up the staff then, and it was still something to behold. "I have a meeting with Ministry employees tomorrow to inquire about that," she added about the possibility that the Ministry might have more of the kind of information she sought. "Hy-Brasil may have something, but I have combed through all that I know of so far. I believe you are correct in that there has to be records somewhere." Merlin had lived so long ago that Xiulan wasn't sure what records had survived over that time or what form they might take, but the Ministry hopefully wouldn't have let his existence become little more than a legend. She was about to say something but waited as Fae pulled what looked like a piece of tree bark from the bag that she was carrying and what looked like a pencil rather than a quill. After she had written something down on the piece of bark, Fae held it out to her. "You will want to reach out to this person when you are ready to travel to Hy-Brasil," she instructed her. Xiulan bobbed her head in a slow nod. She knew what Fae meant by "ready", in theory, though readying herself for such a journey in reality would take much longer than the kind of time that she assumed Fae had to figure out everything and ensure the well-being of her people. "When would you like me to come?" she asked, taking the piece of bark with both hands and making the note of the name written down on it. fae iona cloudbreaker

▲ Under normal circumstances, Fae probably wouldn’t have cared when Julia decided to visit Hy-Brasil. If the only problem at hand happened to be regarding Merlin’s staff and the barrier, while certainly urgent, there was less immediacy than what was currently happening with Yrisle. The ever looming threat of the creeping fog from the newly appeared island had her worried. She was positive that she had been pushing her urgency with everyone on the mainland, though Julia seemed to be one of the first that was actually taking her seriously. Now obviously that didn’t mean there were players within the Ministry that opposed her thoughts on how Yrisle should be dealt with, but there were definitely more that had no problem with researching it instead of casting it away again. Having another ‘ally’ on the mainland would certainly be helpful at some point, and she had a feeling that others would take a powerful Seer like Julia seriously. Visions and premonitions were not things to scoff and look the other at. As for a specific date to visit, that was fairly easy. The sooner the better, though having the other woman show up out of the blue on the island without warning would be slightly strange. The Council had to be made aware of what was going on and Fae still needed to talk to Bianca to gather information from that end as well. Seeing as that meeting was tomorrow and there were a few other scheduled meetings and appearances she had to make still whilst in London, and then the required Council discussions following her return to Hy-Brasil, things were going to get pushed back quite a bit going forward. “Is two and a half weeks from now good? If your schedule here conflicts, I do not want to take you away from your job,” Fae stated. She didn’t know how professional Seer’s functioned here, but it had seemed like it was a career for some, Julia included. “I have business in London through the end of the week, and then I will be returning home to Hy-Brasil. I can send correspondence at that point for confirmation, and then follow with instructions on how to get to the island.” It was fairly easy these days, and she was sure that she could get the Ministry to lend a portkey if that was Julia’s preferred method of transportation. March 1, 2026 Fae asked her if two and a half weeks from that date worked for her. It was soon, thought Xiulan, but it was enough time to figure out what she was going to do and how she was going to manage to make it to Hy-Brasil. She knew that she wasn't being asked to do anything unreasonable; two weeks was enough time to plan, although it would mean moving around a few of her clients. Fae, too, seemed to be cognizant of that and told her that she didn't want to cause any scheduling conflicts for her.
"No, no," Xiulan assured her. "That won't be a problem." Fortunately, most of her clients had learned to be flexible with her anyway, given that she couldn't control in what state her Inner Eye left her one hundred percent of the time. Two weeks' notice was almost a luxury, really.
"I have business in London through the end of the week," Fae explained, "and then I will be returning home to Hy-Brasil. I can send correspondence at that point for confirmation, and then follow with instructions on how to get to the island."
That sounded perfectly reasonable to Xiulan, and she nodded her head. "Wonderful," she smiled at Fae. "And thank you. I know this must be very hard for you, and I'm happy to do what I can."
