got a curse I cannot lift shines when the sunset shifts Rhys looked in the mirror and took a deep breath. It wasn’t that he was exhausted, but he started to feel the exhaustion that accompanied anxiety. With his appointment with Maria only two days away, he’d decided that it was now or never when it came time to tell his family that they should expect a niece or nephew in the summertime. It was challenging to arrange a time with all of them, and he didn’t so many siblings ganging up on him if this conversation went south so he could talk to Juliet and Jean later. Plus, Dahlia happened to be in town when Max had time from school due to their scheduled Hogsmeade visit. This new pizza place was already filled with a few students, he recognized the colored scarves they wore, and one larger table in the corner seemed to represent every house. It reminded him of his school days except that it had primarily been Hufflepuffs and Slytherins in his group with a few Ravenclaws.
He left the bathroom with another deep breath, walking down the short hallway back into the restaurant where Dahlia would be sitting at the table. Rhys didn’t see Max yet, which meant they were a few minutes early. The morning had been spent at the bank. Dahlia was almost done with her training which meant that it had been nearly two years since they’d officially met. But after working together for most of that time, it felt longer than that. Sometimes Rhys forgot that he had thought he was an only child until he was seventeen. ”Anything good on the menu?” Rhys asked, taking his seat across from her and picking up the menu himself. Skimming it, his eyebrow raised but only from a lack of amusement. Puns. Maybe it was for the student’s sake, or someone thought it was funny. ”Another one bites the crust?” Rhys read the name of the pizza out loud and gave his sister an unamused look.

▲ Merlin, she was so fucking hungover still. That was the problem with being in the middle of a desert with nothing but water to drink for two weeks. Admittedly, the bottle of wine she drank on her own as a pre-game for what followed at the bar didn’t help one bit. She figured that throwing it all up in the middle of the night would have helped her case, but all that did was dehydrate the ever-loving hell out of her. It was like being back in Egypt all over again. The cottony-dry mouth feel that morning made her gag because she thought she had swallowed sand again. Her mother’s country really disliked her despite how much she tried to force her love onto it. The harder she pushed, the more it rejected her it seemed. Crawling out of bed and meeting Rhys at the bank, and then coming to the pizza place, was probably the best decision she had made in the last twenty-four hours. She had washed down the Tylenol a few hours earlier with two shots of bourbon but it didn’t stop the pounding headache that had made its place at home in the back of her skull. There had to be a potion for an instant hangover cure. If not, she was going to invest all of her earnings into it and do it herself. Rhys had disappeared off into the bathroom, leaving her to deal with the overly chipper waitress that kept asking her if she was ready to order, despite having been told multiple times that they were still waiting on one. Dahlia almost growled at her the last time but saw her brother coming back towards the table so decided to be nice and just wave the girl off again. “Anything that puts food in me,” she groaned as she laid her head up against the wall that the booth was up against. It was nice and cold from the air vent above it. The noise of the students didn’t help much, though she could ignore that if she had pizza. MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

Meeting up with Rhys and Dahlia, as much as Max loved them as her siblings, was beginning to feel more like a chore than something to which she looked forward. Max knew that it was terrible to think of it that way, but chances were good that one or both of them would be drunk or hungover—or would be drunk by the end of it, if they weren't at the beginning. It took some preparation, even though Max could practically predict it. She couldn't really hold it against them, as much as their drinking frustrated her; Curse-Breaking wasn't an easy job, and she imagined that grabbing whatever they could from old ruins and things like that probably would have driven her to drink, too. At least pizza was something that wouldn't be an issue for any of the three of them, she thought, and Jimbo Blishwick's pizza parlor was the current buzz of Hogwarts—so much so that Max was concerned that she wouldn't be able to get a table when she saw how many other people, mostly other students, were gathered in and around the place. She hadn't thought to check her phone, not that she used it very much as it was, and made her way inside before she noticed that Rhys and Dahlia were not only there already but also seated at a table. Checking the clock on the wall for the time, Max had to make sure that she hadn't made a mistake. No, as it turned out, she hadn't; Rhys and Dahlia were early, though Dahlia appeared to be either hungover or half asleep, her head against the wall. Max didn't want to assume anything, but she would have put money on the former. Relieved that she hadn't somehow shown up late, Max walked towards the booth. "Hey," she told them, eyeing Dahlia. If she were feeling the effects of too much alcohol, she could probably help with that if Dahlia wasn't opposed. Max knew that her healing abilities worked on physical problems and guessed that she could probably fix a headache or something similar, at least. Maybe it was selfish on her part, but it would make it easier to hold a conversation that way, too. "Dahlia, are you feeling alright?" she asked with a slight frown, sliding in the booth beside her but leaving space so that she wasn't crowding her. rhys alexander greyback dahlia jade leloup

got a curse I cannot lift shines when the sunset shifts Rhys felt drained, and for once, he wasn’t even that hungover. The amount of whiskey he’d had to drink the night before was about the normal he needed to sleep, but maybe it was adrenaline keeping him standing at this point. Either way, he was still hungry, and the emptiness of his stomach was bordering on making him nauseous. Dahlia, however, made him look happy and healthy in her current state. The paleness in his face and bags under his eyes couldn’t compare to how close to death she looked and probably felt. Plus, they’d been working all morning, and now they were just waiting on Max.
Max finally arrived. For once, she wasn’t the first one there. The ability to be punctual varied in the family. Rhys was nervous, so he was on time but had it been any other time, he might have waltzed in fifteen minutes from now instead of before. ”Hey Max, we were just about to order.” Rhys glanced at the menu and began reading it. These pizza names were…silly. As she sat down, she asked about Dahlia’s health. Looking over, Dahlia was still leaning her head against the wall. Honestly, Rhys hadn’t asked how much she drank as much as it was his habit to—she’d made a habit herself of asking him right back, so he stopped asking. Plus, aside from offering a hangover potion, there wasn’t much he could do to help her at the moment.
”She’ll live.” Rhys commented flatly, looking back at the menu. ”These names are…interesting.” It wasn’t the type of thing he typically found amusing, but maybe it was for whatever target audient Blishwick had in mind. Pepperoni sounded fine to Rhys as he mentally made his choice. ”How’re your classes?” He asked Max, trying some small talk while he tried to find the courage to get to the point of being here—it was more of a challenge sober. At that thought he glanced at the menu again to see if they had anything alcoholic.

▲ “I barely drank anything,” Dahlia whined again as Max seemed concerned and Rhys brushed off her condition. It wasn’t nearly as bad as she had seen him before, and definitely a few occasions over the summer for her. Being locked out of the country and work left her with very little to do other than sitting on the beach and drinking all day. It was so horrible. Despite having the entire world to travel during that time, it was sort of on her for sticking close to home in Marseille and not branching out too much from there. But at the same time, why would she want to? There was no telling when that lockdown was going to lift and having to constantly tell Gringotts where she was going to be was a massive headache. Not nearly as bad as the one she currently had, but it could have been. Opening her eyes to grab one of the menus, since they would need to order eventually, she looked it over while the other two began talking about school. The menu was expansive, to say the least. She only understood a few of the names, mainly because she knew the original songs, but any of the ones that were play on words completely confused her. Like why was Pie #49 a regular pepperoni, and what was the name supposed to reference? There weren’t even forty-nine pizzas on the menu as far as she could tell. “This menu is confusing me,” she stated abruptly, having not paid attention to anything the other two had been discussing for the last minute or so. “Why does the American Pie say it is Sicilian? I have been to Sicily, why not just call it that?” The one that really disappointed her was the one titled Hair of the Dog. That would have been perfect for her today, but sadly it was past ten in the morning already. That meant she had to deal with one of the weirdly named ones. MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

Rhys explained that they were just about to order, not that Dahlia looked like she felt like doing much of anything. Even though Rhys remarked that she would live, Max knew that it wasn't like Dahlia to be quite so out of it. Dahlia, whining, noted that she "barely drank anything", although Max was pretty sure that that was only relative to how much she theoretically could have drank. She was definitely hungover, though it was strange to see Rhys as comparatively functional. "How're your classes?" Rhys asked her, and Max pulled her attention away from Dahlia for a moment to answer him. "Good," she said. Everything was going well enough, though all of the professors had started to impress upon them that they only had a short time before their NEWTs and the examination results that would ultimately determine their career paths in the working world. That was strange and also a bit stressful, but Max knew that she was handling all of it better than some of her peers. Dahlia began looking over the menu then, at least sitting upright but saying something about how it was confusing to her. She pointed out a pizza called "American Pie" and asked why it happened to have that name if the menu described it as a Sicilian pizza. "I… don't know?" Max asked, not sure what the rhyme or reason was behind half of the names of what was on the menu. She guessed that she could always ask Jimmie Blishwick sometime; it was her dad's restaurant, so maybe she would know. Pausing, Max considered Dahlia again. She knew that what she was about to say was going to sound incredibly stupid and probably confuse both Dahlia and Rhys, but she figured that she might as well take that chance. "Dahlia," she mused, "can I try something?" She reached out her hand towards her and motioned her closer. "You've got a headache, right? I'm wondering… If you lean against me, erm, like you were doing with the wall… if I might be able to heal it… I've only done, er, injuries before, but it's the same idea, isn't it?"rhys alexander greyback dahlia jade leloup

got a curse I cannot lift shines when the sunset shifts Rhys gave Dahlia a side-eye. The amount one had to drink was usually relative. So when Rhys said such a thing, that still meant quite a lot rather than someone who didn’t drink nearly as often as he did. And since they had gone through bottles of whiskey, just the two of them, during her training and after a job was done—Rhys was aware of both their tolerances. Rhys’ eyes scanned down the menu to the pizza that she had mentioned. He had been to Sicily before as well and didn’t see why it would be referred to as the “American” pizza. ”They have firewhiskey at least…” Rhys muttered, having finally turned over to the backside of the menu where sides and beverages were listed. ”I’ll just have the pepperoni one.”
Max told her that her classes were going well, and Rhys figured they would be. She was always a good student from what she reported, and as a Prefect, she was never in all the same trouble that Rhys had always been in. It was a good thing. It meant, to him, that fewer people viewed someone with the Greyback name as such a negative thing versus when he’d been at the school. Progress was progress. He looked curiously, however, when Max suggested he could help Dahlia. The gift that his sister had was something that didn’t always pop into his mind, it didn’t come up often, and Rhys didn’t quite understand it but didn’t think it was anything dangerous either.
Rhys wondered if it would work. He supposed it was probable. Healing was not something he had studied extensively, and if he was being honest he was more useful because he’d know the right counter-curse rather than a healing spell. For the moment he was distracted from his own troubles to see if this would work or not.

▲ There weren’t often times where Dahlia questioned whether she was translating things correctly or not, seeing as her job now literally relied on that. One wrong rune or hieroglyphic translation and into a pit of spikes she went, or worse, getting fired by the bank. Seeing as most of her seniors in Cursebreaking ended up teaching, there was probably something else out there for her, but not too many jobs would hire a werewolf with a penchant for reckless abandon. While that sort of thing seemed to be okay within Gringotts, she absolutely wouldn’t be able to find a job as easily in Paris or within the French government as she could in London and with the Ministry. But the bank seemed to like misfits like her, and she enjoyed it for what it was. The possibility of getting rich quickly depending on how many dangerous jobs she could take at the start was certainly enticing, but she knew better than to be that haphazard. Ending up like Renfri wasn’t on her list of things to do in the first few months of her career once she was elevated to full Cursebreaker status. Needless to say, she wasn’t sure if it was the English language, the Americans obsession with pizza and Italian food, her hangover, or a combination of all three when it came to understanding the reason behind the American Pie pizza being Sicilian in nature. There didn’t seem to be an answer from either of her siblings, Rhys opting for a standard pepperoni, and Max mentioning something about leaning on her shoulder instead of the wall. Still confused about the name of the pizza, she didn’t waste time leaning onto Max. “That’s better than the wall…” Dahlia said through a mouth of her own hair that fell onto her face as she awkwardly tilted her head into place. It wasn’t as cold as the wall, but it was certainly softer than the tile. Nodding off on a shoulder beat almost smashing her face onto the wall. MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

March 21, 2026 Rhys seemed to have decided on the pepperoni pizza, although he was also considering the fact that the pizza parlor happened to have firewhisky on the menu, too. Yeah, thought Max to herself, that was exactly what Rhys and Dahlia needed: more liquor. Dahlia, however, was receptive to her suggestion, and Max had to keep herself from laughing a little when Dahlia leaned against her instead of the wall and made a comment about how much better it was. Max drew her lips into a line as she thought, hoping that what she was about to do wasn't going to end up being completely foolish of her. Dahlia looked like she very easily could have fallen asleep like that, but trying to get her to sleep wasn't what she was doing. As gently as she could, Max held Dahlia's head in her hands. She didn't know how much she needed to focus on what she was doing, because a hangover wasn't a physical injury, but she assumed that it would be something like how the Room of Requirement operated. That was, if she channeled her thoughts into what she was trying to do just enough, then maybe it would happen for her. After a few seconds of silence and holding Dahlia's head in her hands like that, Max spoke to her. "Dahlia… Is your hangover any better now?" she questioned, waiting in anticipation to hear Dahlia's response. rhys alexander greyback dahlia jade leloup

got a curse I cannot lift shines when the sunset shifts To be honest, Rhys hadn’t quite thought very hard about the pizza names and whether they made sense or not. On a typical day, he might have not noticed, but on a day such as this, where anxiety sat on his shoulders uncomfortably, he really wasn’t thinking about it. Rhys’ eyes moved from the menu to Dahlia, who was likely also just agitated because of the hangover she had brought with her as well. He’d seen it before, they’d be preparing for a job, and then you’d have two werewolves barely away from a night of whiskey and snapping at one another incessantly.
But he watched curiously as Max offered to help, Dahlia quickly taking the opportunity to lean on their younger sister rather than the wall. Half of him wanted to deal with the matter at hand, which was weighing on him, and get it over with, but the other half wanted to see if this would work. His eyes moved between the two as he waited for some kind of sign that her ability was working. Max waited for an answer from Dahlia, and Rhys cleared his throat to ask more questions bout this supposed ability to cure hangovers before the waitress appeared.
”Erm—whiskey and the one with pepperoni.” Rhys handed his menu to the young girl who looked barely older than Max as she took the orders from his sisters. After a pause, Rhys cleared his throat again. ”Um—I did want to talk to you both about something while we’re here.” A lump sat uncomfortably in his throat as he wished the whiskey he’d ordered was here already. His siblings knew about Vasilia, of course. That had been easier to explain and frankly an easier conversation than the altercation on Zombie Island the previous year. ”I was seeing someone before Vasilia and now—“ Rhys had been ready to blurt it out, actually, but the waitress returned with their beverages, and Rhys kept his gaze down as he waited for her to leave. He’d never had a problem facing down someone when he was angry enough or running into the unknown for his work, and even in the face of grave danger and injury. But this scared him far more than all that. Because at the end of the day, his sisters—his family’s rejection or disapproval- were far scarier than anything he could ever think to face in the world.

▲ The brief moment with her eyes closed as her head lay on Max’s shoulder almost put her to sleep. It didn’t help that the music playing throughout the restaurant was a relatively quiet smooth jazz song. When she had arrived, it had been a thumping non-magique rock song from the 70s. Based on her limited knowledge of English music, and from the non-magique crowd at that, she assumed everything that played here was related to the names of the pizzas that she did recognize. Before she could fully drift off though, she felt a hand on her head and the pounding, nausea-induced headache disappeared completely. Her eyes snapped open, immediately making contact with Rhys’s as she sat straight up in the booth again. “It’s gone!” she said rather loudly as she looked between her siblings. “How’d you do that? What spell does that?” Whatever Max had just done, she wanted to know it ASAP. Such a spell had to be given to everyone, because that would make hangovers effectively nothing going forward. Before she could continue asking questions though, the waitress appeared and started taking orders. Dahlia asked for the Sicilian one, refusing to call it by its actual name because she still found it stupid, and also wanted a whiskey. If her hangover was cured there was no harm starting for today, right? Waiting for the drink didn’t take long, though it cut off what Rhys was about to say. Something regarding the girl he was seeing and the one that came before her. That meant the one related to Elias, unless there was another in between the two of them. She didn’t really know where he was going with this and decided to down half of her whiskey. Feeling it hit her now sober feeling taste buds was more of a shock than it probably would have been had she still been hungover. “What? You knock her up or something?” she said rather bluntly as she fought back against the drink. MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

March 21, 2026 "It's gone!" Dahlia exclaimed loudly enough that it would have made Max jump if not for the fact that she had been anticipating a response from her. "How'd you do that? What spell does that?" she wanted to know. If she knew what kind of magic it was that made her touch capable of healing people, Max thought, she would have told her, but she really didn't know other than that it had worked.
"I wasn't sure if it would work, because it wasn't exactly an injury," Max admitted, feeling slightly awkward about how Dahlia wanted to shout it from the rooftops. "Erm… It was just my hands. I mean…" she elaborated then in order to give Dahlia a better answer.
The waitress came by at around that same time, and both Rhys and Dahlia ordered, with Rhys saying that he actually wanted to talk to both of them about something while they were there.
"Just the cheese pizza and a butterbeer, thanks," Max told the waitress, though her attention was on what Rhys was saying. "Er, the 'Unforgivable Cheeses', yeah."
"I was seeing someone before Vasilia and now—"
Rhys was cut off by the arrival of their drinks, though Max was beginning to wish that she had ordered a firewhisky instead.
"What? You knock her up or something?" Dahlia questioned.
Max had to wonder if Dahlia's mind had gone where hers had… Back in October, she had had that awkward run-in with Maria and Rhys. She didn't know of anyone else who fit the bill of being someone he was seeing before Vasilia. (The Fortescue girl? She didn't really seem to be Rhys's type, but…) "Wait," Max demanded before either of them went any further. "Are we talking about Maria, or…?" In that case, she hoped that Dahlia had spoken too soon. She neither liked nor trusted Maria. Rhys hadn't gotten her pregnant, had she? She looked towards Dahlia and then back across at Rhys.

got a curse I cannot lift shines when the sunset shifts Amazingly, Max was able to relieve Dahlia of her hangover symptoms. Rhys blinked at them a few times at the amazement of it. Max’s ability wasn’t something he fully understood, but he merely took it at face value or whatever his sister had told him about it. Though it seemed incredibly useful now. Even Rhys could realize the benefits for himself and Dahlia, considering how much whiskey they went through. As much as he never said it aloud, he knew how much he drank, but he functioned fine in life. ”So you can use your ability for hangovers?” Surely, the headache and nausea were minor enough symptoms that made sense. It wasn’t a catastrophic injury by any means.
Rhys had been interrupted by the waitress, which only made his throat feel dryer, and he immediately went to drink a large amount of whiskey while the waitress left and Dahlia finally spoke. Fortunately, Rhys had swallowed the whiskey and placed the nearly empty glass back on the table, or he would have inhaled it all into his lungs. Considering the implications of that kind of physical response plus the previous encounter with Max and Maria the previous October, he wasn’t sure Max would have been so willing to help her brother with his symptoms in that case. Actually felt a little pale, but he wasn’t sure, but his expression didn’t shift all that much as he stared at his glass for a moment as he thought about how to start—but then Max spoke before that as well.
When she spoke ”Wait” Rhys instinctively looked at her, but he wished he had kept staring at the table instead and that patterned table cloth of pizza slices with Jimbo Blishwick’s face creatively in it. ”Well um—“ Rhys managed to look away, he’d told Dahlia the backstory, but he hadn’t brought her up since then and especially neglected to mention that he had, in fact, seen her again. In hindsight, he knew he’d disappeared on Maria after being so thoroughly shaken by that Seer he’d visited, though if Rhys was being honest with himself, he would not have stopped seeing Maria if he had stayed. The longer he didn’t speak, the more anxious he got, and then he knew he would shut down eventually. ”Yes…It's Maria.” Rhys didn’t necessarily feel better saying it finally, knowing very well that meant he’d also admitted to seeing her when he told Max that he would not. Rhys wasn’t sure what to say next, so he went with the first thing that popped into his head. ”Erm—we find out if it’s a boy or a girl in a couple days.” He realized his voice wasn’t as confident as it usually was. The combined fear of fatherhood and telling his family weighed on one another.

▲ If Max’s magical hands hadn’t handled the hangover, listening to Rhys explain that he was about to find out the gender of his newly announced child would have sobered her up instantly. She had been joking when she made her comment, of course, because who would realistically believe that something like that would actually be happening? While crude, she suddenly felt the full weight of what was going on. Just looking across the table at him she could tell that this was obviously something that had taken a bit of time and courage to bring it up. Whether or not it was a problem that the child was with Maria was yet to be seen. Dahlia had no opinion of the woman, having never interacted with her before. But she was related to Elias maternally. In a world where they weren’t the offspring of a fucked up psychopath (and in which they all still existed), she would have essentially been a cousin of sorts. Kind of. The real problem here was that last time she and Rhys discussed Maria, he had commented on how Max and Jamie hadn’t taken that news well. After that though, she hadn’t heard much more about it. Work had sort of always dominated their conversations as of late. She also couldn’t really gauge what Max would say or do next. “You need a giraffe,” Dahlia filled the silence quickly. Obviously she didn’t spend any time around babies, but that was a known fact back home. Every little baby had one at some point or another, chomping away on the rubber giraffe. With added charms, it could probably be kept clean and safe too. “Every baby gets one in France,” she added, turning to Max to try and generate some positivity in the news that had just been dropped on the two of them. March 21, 2026 Rhys confirmed that, yes, they were talking about Maria, and they found out whether it was a boy or a girl in mere days. Max didn't know what was worse: that she was right or that Dahlia was right. Not only had Rhys gotten a girl pregnant, he had gotten Maria pregnant. He had gotten one girl pregnant while dating another—or at least he'd gone from one girl to another quickly enough not to drop the news until he had already moved on. Merlin's beard. Max didn't want to be outraged; she knew Rhys was occasionally irresponsible, but this was another level of irresponsibility.
"You need a giraffe," Dahlia declared almost immediately, and Max just stared at her. Of all the things Rhys needed—not the least of which was some common sense—a giraffe was not high on that list. Rhys did not need a giraffe. He would do well to keep a houseplant alive. "Every baby gets one in France," Dahlia then continued, and Max wondered if maybe she had simply misheard her.
"Every baby gets… a giraffe?" Max asked her, still thoroughly confused. "A giraffe?" She had to repeat it, mostly for her own benefit. There wasn't anything that she could think of that sounded close enough to "giraffe", unfortunately, so she was at a loss. "The… tall horse things with the spots?" Max gestured upwards with her hand to illustrate the height of a giraffe, not that she could actually reach that high.
