got a curse I cannot lift shines when the sunset shifts After Rhys had spoken, there was a pause, and he dared move his gaze from the table to his sisters. Dahlia spoke first and spoke about a giraffe. It wasn’t the response he expected, especially when Max also inquired about the giraffe. How did they go from Rhys admitting that a new Greyback would be coming into the world to talking about giraffes? ”What?” Surely, the small amount of whiskey that Dahlia had drunk after Max had supposedly cured her hangover had not gone to her head already. Or perhaps Max’s healing had confunded their sister by mistake.
Rhys looked at Dahlia and then at Max, and then back to Dahlia. ”What do giraffes have to do with this?” He asked, a little impatient. Maybe it was the stress of revealing all this information or that he had expected some sort of interrogation, maybe some expression of disappointment. Rhys drank the rest of the whiskey in his glass and just in time for their pizzas to arrive. Well, now, if he was lucky, he might get something thrown at him in anger—or maybe not. He’d probably just been hanging around a very hormonal Maria for too long now.
The waitress seemed to read the situation well and returned with a refill for him, for which he was grateful. Clearing his throat, he didn’t touch his food quite yet, feeling somewhat awkward now. It wasn’t a position he was used to being in. Not that his siblings typically caused him trouble, minus when he’d asked Adrian if he was absolutely insane for turning Harry Potter’s daughter into a werewolf. He could only imagine if he was hearing this news from one of them. ”I—um—I know I should’ve told you both sooner…But with work and the island and everything.” That part wasn’t untrue, he was incredibly busy, but he’d also been avoiding it. ”She’s due late July.” Rhys added. There was probably more he could clarify, but he really didn’t know where to start, and he was well enough aware of his tendency to speak and cause more problems. Though he still wondered what giraffes had to do with it all.

▲ Dahlia had forgotten that her country's traditions didn't exactly match up with other ones, nor had she had the chance to talk about babies and giraffes ever before really. The reaction she got from both of them as she started explaining that she needed to get a giraffe for Rhys's incoming child was not really what she expected. Max seemed to have gotten it, though Dahlia was unaware of any other large mammals with long necks and spots, while Rhys looked to be a bit flustered. That was easily explainable by the topic they were on. "Yeah. A giraffe," she repeated, looking at both of them. "Sophie la girafe. It's a toy. Babies in France always have one. I did." There weren't a lot of pictures of her as an infant, especially ones that had been saved following her mother's death, but there was one in a photo book of her with Sophie's long giraffe neck held tightly between her gums. Importing one to London wouldn't be too difficult, though she could easily pop over to Paris and find one. Outside of the giraffe toy, she didn't really know anything else about small humans. They sort of terrified her, in the same way that goblins at the bank stared greedily at gold she brought back for them. In general, any living thing she could solely be responsible for scared her. Thankfully Rhys was the one doing the trial run of it. She didn't want to minimize what Rhys was saying by telling him things like this happened, because it clearly had him anxious. This was big, life changing news after all. Her infinite wisdom on the matter led her to offering up a toy giraffe. "Are you scared?" she asked. "I would be. Babies are loud. And they smell. Like a banshee."MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

March 21, 2026 "Yeah. A giraffe," Dahlia replied to her and Rhys's incredulity that anyone would be trying to give a baby a giraffe for any reason whatsoever. Apparently, the giraffe was called Sophie, which didn't make any sense at all to Max until Dahlia mentioned that it was a toy that was given to babies in France. That made much more sense than the thought of giving a baby an actual giraffe.
Rhys admitted that he should have told them sooner about Maria's pregnancy, but he said that he had gotten busy with work and that weird island that had seemingly sprung out of nowhere. That was fair, Max guessed, though she hoped that Rhys was planning on being more involved in his child's life—ideally so that it wouldn't take after its mother.
"She’s due late July," Rhys added, and Max made a mental note to try to avoid any training on the maternity ward around that time. That would be incredibly awkward, though she wasn't sure that Maria would take her help even if she were dying. (That went both ways.)
"So, er…" Max started, not sure what to say that wouldn't come across as incredibly rude. Maria was her not-quite-sister-in-law or something like that, in addition to being Elias's cousin, which meant that they would probably be seeing more of each other whether they liked it or not. Rhys probably didn't need the lecture that he had gotten himself into a situation that he really couldn't get out of now and that—doing the math—it hadn't even mattered that she'd pulled him aside at Halloween and tried to talk to him about why being with Maria was a bad idea. "Well done you?" she asked sarcastically. Dahlia might have been the one to bring up that babies screamed like banshees, but Maria wasn't much better, was she?

got a curse I cannot lift shines when the sunset shifts Well, that explanation made much more sense than an actual giraffe having anything to do with a baby. He supposed it would be a nice gift from an Aunt—at least that’s what they were supposed to do, right? Honestly, he still had no idea what he was doing, and the thought of it all made his hands a little sweaty. ”Oh, well, that makes more sense.” Really, every time he thought about this, he felt his thoughts just go in circles. In fact, it was the exact opposite of how he might approach something like work, where he always felt prepared to the best of his ability.
Rhys crossed his arms loosely for lack of knowing what else to do with his hands, and he stared at the whiskey glass again until Dahlia asked him a question. Rhys merely slightly nodded ‘yes’, and he sighed. ”Its not like I have a good example of what a father is supposed to do.” Rhys responded a tad sarcastically. Each Greyback children had grown up so differently and met at different times in their lives. There were very few features shared among them, like Rhys and Dahlia’s eyes—their father’s eyes. Then he looked at Max, who he appreciated for not giving him the same lecture she’d given him last October with her concerns, though the sarcasm evident in her tone.
”Obviously, this wasn’t the plan, Max.” But Rhys just had to march over that day after that very public fight. But he’d made up his mind. Maria would be in all their lives now, and so would his child. He was determined that it would not grow up alone as he had. And he was all the more grateful Vasilia was okay with it all. Picking up his glass, he drank some whiskey. There was another pause, and Rhys wasn’t sure what else to say on that topic unless they had questions. ”Right…” In a strange way, that had gone better than he thought, and he was glad he hadn’t orchestrated some lunch with them and Maria all at the same time.

▲ They seemed to both understand the giraffe situation a little better when she explained that it was a toy. Maybe she could start a wave of magic babies getting Sophie la girafe over here. Do that thing the non-magique did to get extra money. What did they call it again? A hustle on the side? Magic folk didn't really understand the prices of mundane things all that well so she could easily buy a box of plastic giraffes and up-charge them. Target the grandparents or something to make it easier. "But if you want a real giraffe, I could probably find one still...might take some work," Dahlia reasoned with her completely unreasonable statement. The zoo worked just as well, to be fair. Babies couldn't really comprehend the size of a real giraffe though, so maybe that wouldn't be worth the effort until it got a bit older... At this point she started to eat her definitely not American slice of Sicilian pizza, savoring the crunch of the square crust as she listened to her siblings reason about Rhys becoming a father. Max was talking it well enough? Processing all of this would probably have been easier if they were both drunk to be honest. After having her hangover cured instantly, she felt a bit slaphappy and neutral on everything. Probably because the baby wasn't her responsibility. Rhys pointed out that he didn't know what being a father wasn't something he knew how to be, obviously lacking an example to pull from, and that caused Dahlia to pause in her chewing. She hadn't really thought of that, nor would it have ever crossed her mind if he hadn't brought it up. Normally she'd probably respond to his sarcasm with her own messed up version of it, maybe saying how all he had to do to be better was not bite the kid on a full moon or kill the mother to instantly be better than their piece of shit father. This was more serious than that. "I don't want to say everything will be fine because I'm not a clairvoyant and hate giving those kinds of sentiments, but I know you'll do your best. You always do."MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

March 21, 2026 The clarification from Dahlia that she was talking about a toy giraffe also reassured Rhys, though all of that faded from Max's mind at the Maria news. "Obviously, this wasn't the plan, Max," Rhys responded to her inability to think of anything to say that was polite, never mind reassuring.
Any hope of eating pizza and enjoying it was lost as she listened to Dahlia offering Rhys some words of encouragement. "I don't want to say everything will be fine because I'm not a clairvoyant and hate giving those kinds of sentiments," she told him, "but I know you'll do your best. You always do."
Max, not really thinking that Maria was Rhys's "best" under any circumstances, kept her mouth shut. She picked at the crust of her pizza because it gave her something to do while she tried to make sense of the fact that Maria was really pregnant with Rhys's child. Did that mean that she was expected to contact her? How would a letter like that even work? She doubted that the school library had an etiquette guide on how one should write a letter under those circumstances. Dear Maria, I know you're pregnant with my future niece or nephew, so congratulations. I think? That was one way to go about it, she supposed.

got a curse I cannot lift shines when the sunset shifts There was a certain weight lifted off his chest, though Rhys wouldn't way. He felt relieved. The impending thought of fatherhood still lingered, and now that at least two more people knew, it felt all that more real. But with the brief pause and Rhys contemplating his real fears, Dahlia was the one that spoke. Rhys blinked at her a few times before looking back to his glass of whiskey. Words of encouragement were still new to him; his formative years hadn’t taught him how to handle them very well. ”Thanks.” He muttered. Maybe his time trying to aimlessly guide his younger siblings without having any real idea of what to do had taught him something.
Rhys grabbed some of his pizza, finally taking a bite. It wasn’t bad. He’d gone for something simple today since his stomach had been nervous. But, at least the far worse scenarios in his mind had passed. Max still hadn’t spoken, and Rhys knew it was likely because of the bad history with the mother of his child. Rhys didn’t blame her, and he didn’t want a stand-off like had occurred before. ”You don’t have to see her, Max.” Rhys finished his glass, placing it closer to the edge of the table so the waitress could see it. ”But I’d like my son or daughter to know all of you.” Rhys paused. This was where it really mattered to him. A large and dysfunctional family that did actually care for one another would ensure his future child was never alone. Rhys would be telling Jean and Ava later in the week since it was hard to get them all together, so Rhys would have to repeat this conversation again.

▲ Trying to jump into the conversation surrounding the issues that Max had with Maria was impossible, because Dahlia had only heard third-party accounts of it. She didn't necessarily see it as her business unless she was asked for advice about the situation. And even that left her wondering if she was qualified for it or not. She'd never known Elias or knew how things had went down during the year the Triwizard Tournament was held at Hogwarts. The last thing she wanted to do now that she actually had a family of sorts was to start taking sides when that wasn't necessary. "The baby isn't her," Dahlia said nonchalantly to Max as she took another bite of her pizza. What a horrid picture that thought created though: a clone of Maria popping out like that. Max's un-hungover power was bringing out all sorts of weird things in her head today! The amount of clarity she had right now almost felt like a high, like she was getting extra oxygen to her brain and it was working overtime. The trade off was fair though. Who wanted to be hungover all day? "I think it sounds fun," she added after swallowing the mouthful of cheese and dough. Unfortunately this type was greasy and stringy, so there wasn't a game of chasing down melted strings of cheese with each bite. "I always wanted to get someone a giraffe." That required having friends or family though, which until recently, she'd had none. It was exciting for her, despite Rhys's obvious nervousness over the whole thing. "Come on, be excited Aunt Max!" Hopefully that wasn't pushing her too much, but Dahlia didn't know what else to do now other than be positive. Someone had to do it. That wasn't really her nature at all considering everything that had happened in her life. But all the Greybacks were that way, or at least understood it. Finally there was going to be one that would have a good father figure. She could guarantee that. MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

March 21, 2026 Both Rhys and Dahlia had been forced into the position of reminding her that Maria's unborn child was not her. That was true; the baby would also be half Rhys's—and hopefully take after its father. It was exciting, Max supposed, that she was going to be an aunt. Just why did it have to be because of Maria?
Max sighed, getting her older half-siblings' points. "…I guess it can't choose its mum, can it?" she grumbled finally. "I've got nothing against the baby." Rhys would be a father; Dahlia would get the chance to give a baby a giraffe, and all would be right with the… Scratch that. That still didn't sound right, but Max knew that she had to accept that what had been done between Rhys and Maria was done. Hopefully, Max thought to herself, the next generation of Greybacks wouldn't be dealing with the absolute chaos that was their shared parentage. Then again, she couldn't be sure.

got a curse I cannot lift shines when the sunset shifts Rhys had wondered silently over the past few months what Elias might have thought about this situation. Would there have been some lecture or stern discussion with himself or Maria or both? Well, they would never know, and Max was always here if there ever was a need to lecture Rhys on anything. As much as he tried, he could never entirely push the memories of last Halloween out of his mind. Dahlia was less sarcastic than usual, but perhaps she was just reading the room. While she was a newer addition to the family, Rhys realized he’d probably spent the most time with her due to their work and training. And incidentally, they’d both survived violent encounters with their father at the price of their sole guardians.
Cautiously he glanced at Max as Dahlia called her ‘Aunt’ for the first time. It sounded strange in Rhys’ ears. Aunt Dahlia, Aunt Max, Uncle Jean. While Rhys hadn’t told many people, almost all that were close to him knew. More self-appointed Aunts and Uncles for his future child. It was still confusing to him the emotions such declarations gave him, but so much was changing that he hardly felt he could keep up most days. Max relented, and that was all Rhys could ask of her at this point. ”I don’t think I was her first choice either.” Rhys added sarcastically as he finished the new glass of whiskey that had arrived. It was far more interesting than the pizza.
A part of him was a little grateful it was Maria, if only because they actually knew each other on a different level despite their words to one another. Rhys thought of the memories she had shared with him—he’d always be grateful for that and the other stories she’d let slip now and then. As he ate some more of his pizza, he impatiently looked around for the waitress. It was growing crowded, which meant his drink refill would take a moment. He let out a frustrated sigh through his nose. ”When you graduate, we can go to a pub instead.” Rhys grumbled. Max would be old enough and Vasilia would be happy to see more of Rhys’ family at the Violet Hound.
